This is first in a series that I am calling, "Amazing Women Doing Amazing Things”. My guest today is the incredible Sarah Williams from England. Sarah Williams is an author, vlogger, motivational speaker, marathoner and ultra runner. Sarah is also the host and creator of the two time award winning “Tough Girl Podcast”, a podcast where she interviews inspirational female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome great challenges. Her podcast is listened to in 174 countries around the world and has passed one million downloads. I invited her to talk about her podcast and also her many other achievements. The one I was most excited to talk to Sarah about primarily was that she ran the Marathon des Sables in 2016. Often described as “the toughest footrace in the world”, the Marathon des Sables is a race comprised of 6 stages over 7 days in the unforgiving Saharan desert and is the equivalent to running a marathon a day for 6 days straight in the extreme temperatures of the Sahara desert. The following year in 2017, she thru hiked the Appalachian Trail solo and unsupported (2,190 miles) in 100 days. We will talk about her many other accomplishments, as well as being the founder of her company, Tough Girl Challenges, which is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls to get fit, active, travel, explore and to encourage women and girls to have big dreams and to step outside their comfort zone. Please follow Sarah Williams on all social media below and please subscribe to her wonderful YouTube channel, which has many awesome videos of her adventures that we talked about on the podcast. Sarah Williams started her career in banking, but in 2013 after 8 years of office work, she packed her bags and started traveling around the world. It was whilst she was travelling and questioning her next step that she realised her love of three things; challenges, travel, and adventure. And so she took these passions and used them to found Tough Girl Challenges in 2014. Her aim? To motivate and inspire women and girls to get fit and active, to travel and explore, and to have big dreams and to step outside their comfort zone.Along the way, Sarah herself has lived up to the project's vision, having run the Marathon des Sables, which is 6 marathons in 6 days across the Sahara Desert, thru hiked the entire Appalachian Trail of 2,190 miles, cycled the 4000km Pacific Coast Highway, run the London Marathon 5 times, climbed Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world, and so much more. Sarah is the author of 5 books, and the host of the 2x award-winning Tough Girl Podcast, which is listened to in over 174 countries and had over 1 million downloads. In this episode we dive into all of this and more, exploring what goes on behind the scenes of Tough Girl, and how Sarah manages it all!In our chat Sarah mentions the book The Slight Edge. Today we have a podcast about a podcast and my first international guest! At the age of 32, Sarah Williams looked at her busy life working for a bank in London and decided that it no longer made her happy. So, she quit her job and went on an 18 month trip around the world. Along the way, she realized her passion for challenging adventures and raising women’s voices. And she has found a way to make an income and live a life, doing just that. Here is Sarah’s story.
For the first episode in season two of Life Done Differently, I had the incredible pleasure to chat with Sarah Williams who is on a mission to inspire girls and women to follow their own path and live their best lives. After working in finance for 8 years, Sarah quit her city job and spent 18 months travelling the world, climbing Kilimanjaro, backpacking around South America and doing a ski season – while figuring out what to do with her life. She set up Tough Girl Challenges as a way of motivating and inspiring women and girls and hosts the Tough Girl Podcast where she has interviewed over 300 inspirational female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome great challenges. The Tough Girl Podcast has been downloaded over 1.5 Million times in 174 countries. It won the Women’s Sport Trust, Media Initiative of the Year Award in May 2018 and the She Extreme best adventure podcast in 2019. And as if that’s not enough, Sarah has also completed the Marathon des Sables (6 marathons in 6 days across the Sahara desert), thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail (2,190 miles) in 100 days, completed a Masters in Women & Gender studies at Lancaster University in 2018 and cycled the Pacific Coast Highway and Baja California solo and unsupported (over 4,000 km). I know, WOW, right?!?!In this episode, we talk about Sarah’s journey and adventures. We cover how she found her place in the world, how she supports herself financially, female role models, making dreams happen, the many things Sarah has learned on her journey and a whole lot more.
After working in finance for 8 years, Sarah made a big and bold decision to quit her high-flying city job and spent 18 months travelling the world, climbing Kilimanjaro, backpacking around South America and doing a ski season. She used the time abroad to help her decide on what she wanted to do with her life. As a result, she set up Tough Girl Challenges as a way of motivating and inspiring women and girls. She founded and developed the Tough Girl Podcast from scratch, where she’s interviewed over 350 inspirational female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome great challenges. The Tough Girl Podcast has been downloaded over 1.5 Million times in 174 countries. It won the Women’s Sport Trust, Media Initiative of the Year Award in May 2018 and the She Extreme best adventure podcast in 2019. In addition to this she has completed the Marathon des Sables (6 marathons in 6 days across the Sahara Desert), thru hiked the Appalachian Trail in 100 days (2,190 miles), completed a Masters in Women & Gender studies at Lancaster University and cycled the Pacific Coast Highway and Baja California solo and unsupported (over 4,000 km). After working in finance for 8 years, feeling “grey and tired”, Sarah Williams quit her city job and spent 18 months travelling the world, climbing Kilimanjaro, backpacking around South America and doing a ski season in Verbier. She used this time to help her decide on what she wanted to do with her life. She set up Tough Girl Challenges as a way of motivating and inspiring women and girls. She is the host the Tough Girl Podcast where she has interviewed over 300 inspirational female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome great challenges. The Tough Girl Podcast has been downloaded over 1.5 Million times in 174 countries. It won the Women's Sport Trust, Media Initiative of the Year Award in May 2018 and the She Extreme best adventure podcast in 2019. Sarah completed the Marathon des Sables (6 marathons in 6 days across the Sahara desert) in April 2016 and in 2017 she thru hiked the Appalachian Trail (2,190 miles) in 100 days! She completed her Masters in Women & Gender studies at Lancaster University in 2018 and cycled the Pacific Coast Highway and Baja California solo and unsupported (over 4,000 km).For me personally, this is possibly one of my most inspiring chats to date. Sarah feels more like me than many of the women I have interviewed and I could relate so much to her need for adventure, her desire to inspire and motivate women to get out and live their one life to the full. She is infectious with her positivity, her drive and her generosity of spirit. I took so much from this conversation. Not just what she has learned from her incredible guests (as I do every week) but from her own adventures into the pain cave, delving deep to find out what we're made of.Listen to this and then binge listen to her incredible podcast. On this episode I share my interview with Sarah Williams, host of the Tough Girl Podcast & Founder of Tough Girl Challenges and we explore how Sarah came to create something that is 'tough and feminine'. Recognised by the Guardian in 2018 as one of the top 10 most inspiring contemporary female adventurers, Sarah epitomises everything that Tough Girl is all about. On work-life balance Sarah says; Work-life balance is this wonderful dream and these fabulous words which get banded about and is something that I massively struggle with as I don't really have it. Sometimes I like to think I have it but generally I go from one extreme to the other. Background Sarah has an on-line brand called Tough Girl Challenges which is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls. Encouraging them to dream big, to live their life to the fullest as well as to travel, to explore, to get fit and to go on adventures. She does this through a number of ways including; having a blog, a podcast, writing books and part of her mission is to increase the number of female role models in the media. Since setting up Tough Challenges in 2014, Sarah has regularly stepped outside of her own comfort zone. She has taken on a number of her own challenges including; running the Marathon des Sables, hiking the Appalachian Trail in addition to cycling the Pacific Coast Highway and the Baja Divide. Purpose The more women that go out there and complete challenges; this will have a knock on effect on other areas in society. The ripple effect will be huge and we will start to see a better balance in everything from politics to films, sport and coverage. Above all; it's important for women to see it to believe it. Sarah loves interviewing other women and sharing their stories for the Tough Girl Podcast. These women are completing inspirational challenges and therefore they are going to increase the number of female role models in the media. Tough and feminine is a thread that runs through our discussion which Sarah is hugely passionate about. Challenging some of societies models, norms and expectations that we've previously been encouraged to believe. Final take-away Write it down. Krish is joined by Sarah Williams, host of The Tough Girl Podcast and founder of Tough Girl Challenges. Sarah takes us along with her from an unfulfilling career in banking, through gruelling physical challenges, to where she is now; inspiring women and girls to overcome their self-doubt, challenge themselves to set ambitious goals in life, and have adventures of their own through Tough Girl Challenges. Sarah’s adventures have taken her on foot through the notoriously tough Marathon des Sables, and along the length of the Appalachian Trial in a mere 3 months, before switching to wheels to cycle the Pacific Coast Highway. Along the way, Sarah realised her perseverance and ambitious physical challenges had the power to inspire others to set and achieve their own goals, overcome their fears, and push themselves in their everyday lives. Motivating young girls in schools, and inspiring thousands globally with the Tough Girl Podcast, Sarah talks Krish through how she helps others through her own impressive journey, and the sacrifices she has made to get there. Sarah highlights the vital mental resilience needed for any physical challenge, emphasising the importance of ‘enjoying the process, enjoying the journey…that’s where the power comes from’, and speaks of ‘knowing your why’; what is it that keeps you going, and stops you from getting overwhelmed by the task at hand? She remembers the initial judgement she felt from peers upon quitting banking and started adventuring, and talks through how to cope with this and focus on your own goals and ambitions. The most important step? Getting started. Want to follow Sarah’s next adventure, and get motivated to take on your own challenge? Google ‘Tough Girl Challenges’. What does it take to live a life of adventure and freedom and constantly challenging yourself? Sarah Williams of the Tough Girl Podcast shares how she started running her own business by doing what she loves and highlighting women that inspire and empower other women to do extraordinary things. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Sarah’s many achievements and what drives her to succeed How Tough Girl Challenges came about Monetizing the Tough Girl Podcast Sarah’s definition of success Sarah’s next challenge Key Takeaways: Tough Girl Challenges came about because Sarah wanted to combine her interests and passions to show young girls out there that they can be tough and feminine at the same time. For Sarah, valuing herself and the content that she puts out was a hard learning curve. She realised that the stuff that you do is important and you do deserve to get paid for the hard work that you put in. Sarah defines success with these questions: Am I happy? What is my physical and mental health like? Do I love what I am doing? Action Steps: Figure out what you like to do, as opposed to what you think you should like to do. What are your passions, your interests, your hobbies? Sarah said: “The key thing for me was I also wanted to create a living, breathing entity such as the website which I could run from anywhere in the world. I wanted to be able to be nomadic.” “For me, it just has to come back to what are my interests? What are my passions? What is my mission? And it all becomes very clear when you know what your purpose is, and my purpose is to increase the female role models in the media.” Thanks for listening! On this episode I share my interview with Sarah Williams, host of the Tough Girl Podcast & Founder of Tough Girl Challenges and we explore how Sarah came to create something that is 'tough and feminine'. Everything that you want to achieve in your life; take 1o minutes to write down those things. be proactive and start planning your life. On this episode I interview with Phil White, co-author of several brilliant books including Unplugged with Andy Galpin & Brian McKenzie, Game Changer with Fergus Connolly, 17 hour fast with Dr Frank Merritt - challenging some of our assumptions. Background Phil was a guest on the show in Series 1 (episode 5) and we pick up where we left off last time; talking about technology and social media and the impact that it's having on our mental health. Having taken a 30 day sabbatical from all social media as an experiment whilst working alongside Kenny Kane, Phil has found it hard to pick up social media again and re-adjust to having that back as part of his life. During the 30 day period he found himself challenging some assumptions and questioning the value and purpose of posting stuff on social media at all. Discovery One of the things that Phil has been able to rediscover is the art of what he calls; long form conversation. Conversation whereby you are looking the other person in the eye, gauging response and observing body language as well. Ask yourself; what is it taking you away from? This is beautifully highlighted and illustrated by the 'Device free dinner' Campaign in which Will Ferrell is the star. What Phil keeps seeing and coming back to is 'long form'. Magazines that he writes for have shifted their focus from short articles or hacks to now wanting more journal type articles. He says; One of the reasons that podcasts like this are so popular and some of those in the US are massively popular like Tim Ferris and Joe Rogan is that people love them. They love them because they take the place of conversation. Final take-away Take a daily walk. 20-30 minutes ideally in nature. I've always been amazed at those who push their limits and break through barriers of fear. I can imagine that's what our next podcast guest, Sarah Williams, had to do in order to complete the Marathon des Sables, a multi-day, ultramarathon event that takes place in the Sahara Desert. I've completed the New York City and Philadelphia marathons (26.2 mile races), as well as local triathlon events (swim/bike/run combos) so know the hard work and training that goes on behind the scenes. But the Marathon des Sables is a whole other beast altogether. Six marathons in six days, all self-supported with backpacks with 1,200 other competitors in a hot, vast desert. I love how Sarah was able to challenge herself enough to get out of her comfort zone and really step it up to compete and come in ninth place for British women. But was she always as tough as the course she had to face? Listen to her story as she, like many, came at a crossroads with what to do with her life and job, and how sitting on buses in South America gave her the idea for tough girl challenges as an outlet for personal growth and transformation, including competing in the "toughest footrace on earth." Who is Sarah? After working in finance for eight years, Sarah quit her city job and spent 18 months traveling the world, climbing Kilimanjaro, backpacking around South America and doing a ski season. She used this time to help her decide on what she wanted to do with her life. She set up Tough Girl Challenges as a way of motivating and inspiring women and girls. She’s also the host the Tough Girl Podcast where she interviews inspirational female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome great challenges. She completed the Marathon des Sables in April 2016. This year, she will hike the Appalachian Trail (2,190 miles) in 100 days! Quotes from Sarah I’ve realized recently that I wake up everyday and I’m just so happy because I just love my life, I’m doing exactly what I want to do. (5:35) What amazes me is when I look back on my vision board it’s like, 'Oh, my gosh, I can’t believe I did that!' (9:12) When I was working at my job, I actually spent more time planning my holidays than planning my life and I find it’s very easy to slip into routines and not plan what you really want to do and the days go by, the weeks go by, the months go by and suddenly you look up and 'wow hold on how did I even get here?' If you don’t think about it, if you don’t plan it, if you’re not developing your future and not making it the way you want to see it, you’re going to be living somebody else’s future. (10:10) What You’ll Learn How visualization exercises was key to creating her version of a well-designed life How she created Tough Girl Challenges via a business plan and 200-page manifesto of what she wants to achieve Why she chose the Marathon des Sables as her big challenge How taking action, despite not having all the answers or information, is her default choice nowadays—certainly keeps one from getting stuck in analysis paralysis! Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Sarah Williams is a true force of nature. Her goal is to inspire women and girls to think beyond the boundaries of their previously limited lives, and she has earned her recognition as a true leader in her community. To challenge herself further, she is attempting a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail from June 2017 and hoping to complete that challenge in 100 days. Her defiant self-belief and powerful determination lead her to challenge others to test themselves. Sarah quit her well-paid City of London job to pursue her dreams and spent 18 months traveling the world, climbing Kilimanjaro in Africa and hiking around South America among her many adventures. She can be contacted in many ways and through many platforms, all of which will appear at the bottom of these notes, after her second photograph. Jessa / Attie has come to something of a crossroads in her hike. We met at Trail Days and she seemed to have made up her mind that perhaps a thru-hike wasn't for her. A couple of days later, she was back hiking, relishing the trail once more and happy with her decision. She'll make the final decision on Memorial Day. Before that happens, though, we got the chance of a picture together for the first time. By the way, I mention my bear sighting in the show. Here is the YouTube link as promised. Out of the many expeditions that you have set yourself, which one challenged/pushed you to the limits both physically and mentally? Is there one piece of equipment that you cannot go without whilst on an expedition? Your podcast Tough Girl Challenges has now been running for many years. What inspired you to set this up initially and how much work goes into creating your podcasts? You interview women from all walks of life. Do you feel that this has inspired you as a person to try new things? You are next planned expedition is to embark on a 100 day hike across the Appalachian trail. How long does planning such a trip take? Finally as it is International women's day what piece of advice would you give women out there who may only just be starting/keen to start up their own adventures and try something new? Tough Girl Challenges is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls. As well as interviewing athletes, explorers and adventures. I also think it’s important to interview the women behind the scenes, the women who support and help others to achieve their goals. In this episode I interview Gale Bernhardt, she has a real passion for helping others and she found this passion when she was sixteen years old. As a renowned Olympic Coach with over twenty years experience she knows what she's talking about. She’s also heavily involved in cycling and multi-sport athlete development. In this episode, Gale gives a fascinating insight into how the sport of triathlon has grown over the years since its birth in 1976. She has been there from the start. Gale was one of the first female coaches to realise how big triathlons were going to be in the future. Gale reminisces about her first event, and why she became hooked on the sport. She provides advice and tips for women who want to do their first sprint triathlon and its not as difficult as you think it would be. She is realistic about the training and the time frames needed to complete an event and its not the twenty or thirty hours of training each week as you would expect. You can train for your first sprint triathlon in five hours a week! Gale also discusses the importance of goal setting and gives great advice on how to sit down and do this. I also share one of my more outlandish goals! She’s worked with Nicole Freedman a road racer who wanted to go to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She had been written off by everyone else in the States and no one else believed she would be able to get there. She was overtrained and undertrained at the same time, and was in a really difficult place. Gale helped her and she can help you to! This is an episode not to be missed, especially if you’re interested in triathlons and want to know more about how to start. Gale also talks about mental preparation and the importance of nutrition in your diet. Please visit her website www.galebernhardt.com. Gale is on twitter @GaleBerhardt I’m also on twitter @_TOUGH_GIRL. Listen to the podcast and send us a tweet! It would be great to hear from you. Tough Girl Challenges is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls. In this episode I interview Liz Yelling. Liz is a British long-distance runner, who excelled in the marathon distance (26.2 miles), and her personal best is a staggering time of 2 hr 28 mins 33 seconds! Liz has competed in two consecutive Olympics Games, Athens and Beijing, she’s also a Commonwealth medalist winning a Bronze medal in Melbourne in 2006. During this podcast, Liz talks about how she first got into running, and how she progressed from running cross country at school, to joining an athletics club before becoming a professional and making the transition from 10K races, to marathons. For anyone interesting in running and wanting to understand the mind set of how runners train for the big event. This is the podcast you need to listen to. Liz has a fascinating story to share, its full of highs and lows and during this interview she is very open as she discusses a variety of topics, from confidence, how she trains and what she learnt from training over the years, her mental and physical preparation before races as well as her life after running. Liz has dealt with a lot over her running career and it hasn’t always been a smooth road, she’s dealt with injury, chronic fatigue, and lack of belief in herself. She talks about overcoming disappointment in her career and how she moved herself forward and handled potentially career ending set backs. Her outlook on life is hugely pragmatic and positive. I personally really enjoyed hearing about her Olympic runs in Athens and Beijing and how she trained and got herself into the best physical and mental state possible so she was ready to do what was needed on the day. For Liz, running will always be a huge part of her life, she now runs for pleasure, taking her children with her. Liz also coaches athletes through, Yelling Performance which she runs with her husband Martin. Here she shares her knowledge of running with complete beginners to more experienced runners. This is an episode not to be missed! Liz is on twitter @girlwhatruns I’m also on twitter @_TOUGH_GIRL. Listen to the podcast and send us a tweet! It would be great to hear from you. Tough Girl Challenges is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls. In this episode I interview Ann Daniels a record breaking polar explorer. Described by the Times as “living proof that humans really can reach new peaks”. In 2002, Ann became the first woman in history to ski to the North and South Poles as part of all women teams. She has sledge-hauled over 4000 miles, completing over 10 polar expeditions and surviving over 400 days on the ice. During this podcast Ann talks about how she took her first steps to becoming a polar explorer. At thirty years old she’d never done anything like this before. She was going through a tough divorce and she had just given birth to triplets! Ann decided she needed to follow her dreams and she wasn’t going to let anything or anyone stop her. She applied for a relay expedition to the North Pole in 1997. She was not one of the strongest candidates, with her limited knowledge and experience. But she made up for this with her work ethic and drive. She set her goal and she went for it, she kept on learning and she kept on adapting. She faced huge challenges in one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet and that’s were she learnt the most about herself and what she could achieve. She built her own self confidence; she overcame monumental physical and mental challenges and became stronger and tougher because of it. She developed a mindset where she would not give up. On this podcast you can listen to Ann in her own words as she explains in detail how she coped with serious setbacks in the Arctic. How she honed her leadership skills and empowered herself and others along the way. Ann provides tips and advice and is passionate about what she does. She also talks about a future challenge that’s going to take place in April 2017. Her eyes were opened to the difficulties that young people face in terms of dealing with mental illnesses and the stigma that surrounds it. It was brought closer to home when her eighteen year old daughter was take ill. Ann will lead an expedition of six young people on a journey to the Arctic that they will never forget and in the process raise £3 million pounds for charity. To learn more about Ann and her challenges please visit her website www.anndaniels.com. This podcast will inspire you, and get you to think about what you’ve always wanted to do? What chances do you need to take to go after your dreams? What’s really stopping you? What excuses are you telling yourself? Ann will encourage you to believe in yourself and believe in the opportunities that are coming available to you. Listen to Ann and go for it. Give it a go and see what happens. No matter what, you will learn more about yourself by saying yes, than you ever will by saying no. Ann Daniels is on twitter @AnnDanielsGB I’m also on twitter @_TOUGH_GIRL. Emma has just made her way via bike from Manchester down to Dover, where she is catching the ferry over to France, she will then be cycling over to Italy to do a month of rock climbing before cycling home.
