All across Britain, in some of the wildest places you can find, is a network of mountain huts - called bothies. But unlike shelters found in the rest of the world, these were never built for walkers. Former schoolhouses, farmsteads, gamekeepers lodges, coastguards lookouts and miners bunkhouses, there are around 100 buildings (across Scotland, England and Wales) left open for walkers and climbers to use - free of charge. For the last 60 years they have been in the care of the Mountain Bothies Association - an organisation who maintain and look after them and are funded by donation and run by volunteers. Deep in the Rockies in Alberta, Canada, is a small unassuming hut that - unknown to many - houses a teahouse that has been serving hikers since 1904. In the heat of high summer the cabin swarms with hikers in search of a brew. Early or late in the season, though, it's possible to bag the best view in the house on the porch overlooking Lake Agnes before choosing from the impressive menu of loose-leaf teas in relative tranquillity.Joanna Magee owns the teahouse and has to get up at 4.30am to bake the day's supply of bread on an old propane army stove (there's no electric in the cabin). Stocking up on supplies are even more challenging - with all dry goods being helicoptered in once a year and members of staff having to hike into Lake Louise to pick up fresh produce and hike all the rubbish back out. Saudi Arabia is a controversial place - one that for years was closed off to westerners without a special invite. But that all changed in 2019 with the announcement of a new tourist visa and a huge investment in infrastructure - beginning with the north-western oasis city of Alula. So far, most travellers have been Instagram influencers, keen to get 'that' shot of Elephant Rock or the infinity pool at Habitas. But Wander Woman Phoebe Smith is determined to skew the surface glitz, head off piste and dig deeper to discover if tourism really has made a difference to the local women who live there. Following in the footsteps of her late grandmother, who journeyed to Saudi in 1987, her guide is the diary her granny kept, a constant source of comparison between then and now. Never afraid to ask questions, probe deeper and seek answers, Phoebe asks - is tourism helping the women of Saudi to break trail? Also coming up:How you can enjoy a stress-free visit to Saudi Arabia; meet the woman working as part of a team to bring back the Arabian leopard; discover how best to dress to comfortably go from souk to sand; 10 reasons to consider a visit to Alula; hear about TV historian Bettany Hughes' love of all things Nabatean; Wander Woman of the Month – the first British born Muslim woman who made a pilgrimage to Mecca – Zainab Cobbold (aka Lady Evelyn Murray). www.Phoebe-Smith.com; @PhoebeRSmith

When it comes to relationships, often there's the planner—and then there's the go-with-the-flow-er. And today's episode of Travel Tales by Afar is all about what happens when the planner hesitantly chucks the travel to-do list and lets serendipity lead the way.  Beth Santos is the planner in this particular story. She's the founder of Wanderful, an online women's travel community that grew out of her solo travels as a young woman, and is an incredibly prolific and passionate entrepreneur and traveler. She hosts the 85 Percent podcast (named for the fact that women still make 85 percent of the travel decisions), is working on a docu series about influential women over the decades, and recently wrote a book, Wander Woman: How to Reclaim Your Space, Find Your Voice, and Travel the World, Solo, among many other things.  She's also married, with young children, and early on in her relationship with her husband, Marvin, it became clear that they had very different ideas about travel. Beth wanted a full itinerary that packed in all the sights. Marvin wanted a cocktail on the beach. And then on a trip to Greece, with a 24-hour layover in Istanbul, Marvin asked Beth a question that would change the trajectory of her travel life.  Her story is sweet, funny, and such a good reminder of the power of the agenda-less trip. She discovered her love for learning and travel during her early college days when she spent her summers working with local artisans in small towns of Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu in India. As she traveled to countries around the world, she sought similar experiences where she could immerse herself into the local culture, make things with her hands, and get inspired by learning something new. She noted that there were others like her expecting the same from their travels, but there was no easy way to find local artists and designers in cities they would visit, sitting at home. Thus the idea of ‘Vacation With An Artist' was born. Celtic goddess? Catholic Saint? Or master beer brewer? February 1st marks St Brigid's Day – as well as the pagan festival of Imbolc, which elebrates the coming of spring, which the Irish Government have declared to be a public holiday. But who was the Brigid behind Ireland's female patron saint? The stories are many - from the igniter of an eternal flame, protector of the earth, the environment and animals; to the girl who gave away her father's sword to the poor so that they could sell it for food; and the saint who manage to claim The Curragh lands under her mythical cloak . And did we mention the woman who brewed enough beer to satiate her entire parish of 18 churches in a single pot?Fascinated by this indisputable Wander Woman, adventurer Phoebe Smith heads to Kildare in Ireland (just a 30 minute train ride from Dublin), in association with Tourism Ireland, to go on the St Brigid Trail in a mission to find out who she really was. Legal Grounds | Conversations on Life, Leadership & Law

Imagine a world without Anger. Sounds kinda good, right? Everyone being nice to each other, never fighting to merge for traffic or crowding the grocery store aisles…  But, counterintuitive as it may seem, a world devoid of Anger would actually be a pretty terrible place to live.  See, a lot of us have been taught that our negative emotions are, in a way, "not fit to print."  Sadness, guilt, anger - all of these emotions are natural, and yet we are either taught to avoid them or shamed out of experiencing them. This, in turn, affects our ability to fully communicate our authentic selves.  My guest this week, Marcia Reynolds, learned that lesson from an unlikely source in an unlikely place - a cell-mate during her time in jail.  Marcia has gone on to earn two master's degrees and a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology.  She is the founder of Covisioning, a leadership coaching firm that focuses on engagement and emotional intelligence to help leaders foster change in their organizations and bring teams closer together.  Marcia is a two time TEDx speaker and the author of multiple books including Wander Woman, and The Discomfort Zone. We talk about the positive power of anger, why people tend to hide (or hide behind) their negative emotions, and how the "lean in" culture is becoming a thing of the past. Enjoy the show!

Episode 10C-PTSD and MeditationA Foundation to Build UponJanuary 7, 2021Today I want to talk with you about meditation and share some of my experiences with meditation. Yeah, I know, almost everyone I mention meditation to says, “Yeah, I tried that, I couldn't keep my mind focused.” or “I couldn't stop thinking, so I quit.” Newbies think they were failing when in actuality, they were just scratching the surface of what meditation is. First of all, meditation is an action, not an outcome. It is the action of non-action. I know that sounds paradoxical, but it is true. There is no right way to meditate and there is no right amount of time or number of times per day standards. Meditation is a contract you enter into with yourself. It is a commitment to spending a small part of your busy day doing nothing and being present. There are thousands of books, videos and podcasts that will instruct you on what Daniel and Michelle Levey call the Fine Art of Relaxation, Concentration and Meditation. They wrote it all down in their book by the same name. Their book is my favorite because it gets to the point and gets you meditating right away. Here's a link to Goodreads for more information about this book. The Fine Art of Relaxation, Concentration, and MeditationDo you want to know more about meditation? Where it comes from? What traditions have developed? or simply How to meditate? You might want to start with Wikipedia. There you will find a boat load of information spanning a wide range of meditation styles and traditions from throughout history.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MeditationBecause I dive pretty deep into a trigger event from last Sunday, I thought it would be a good idea to toss out a website that supports getting up close and personal with your trigger process. She has provided coaching and training in 41 countries and is on faculty for coaching schools in China, Russia, and The Philippines. Marcia was the 5th International Coaching Federation (ICF) President and only recently she was inducted into ICF's Circle of Distinction for her contributions to the global coaching community. Marcia is also the author of several bestselling books including Outsmart Your Brain, Wonder Woman and the Discomfort Zone. Her latest book Coach the person not the problem, a guide to reflective enquiry, is the subject for this podcast. Podcast episode summary:  This episode focuses on the art of coaching and in particular the critical importance of reflective enquiry as part of the Coaching process. Dr. Marcia Reynolds shared her reasoning for writing another book on coaching.  Marcia felt it was important to impart her 25 years of coaching experience to share what is often missing in the coaching conversation and  to remind coaches and leaders how to help people think & think differently for change. Marcia is passionate about the value of Coaching and notwithstanding her enormous contribution to the field already she has decided to launch a 6 month program called Breakthrough Coaching in partnership with WBECS .It will commence in October 2020.   Points made through the episode: Marcia was a self-confessed obsessive. She was obsessed about understanding what it took to get at real behavioural change. Her quest saw her work to source those answers and combined to inform her choice to pursue a Doctorate. She explains the difference between telling and asking and what it does to our brain Curiously Feedback, although well intended has the affect similar to that of a person holding a gun to your head. The stress is that great. Most people do in fact know what they want, they simply do not do the reflection required to understand their thinking. We live in stories; we are meaning making machines. It is important to be able to see our stories and the frames that hold our identity, including beliefs and assumptions that are often flawed. As coaches we have grown to misunderstand the coaching competencies. Coaching Competency 2, getting at the coaching agreement is confused with solving problems. We are missing the art of reflection and we focus too much on the beautiful or powerful question. By way of her own research Marcia discovered the work of John Dewey in 1910. It explained the power of reflection “When you deprive a client from feeling you stunt their growth” Curiosity, Care and Courage form the important trilogy to get at whole person coaching Marcia wrote her new book; Coach the Person not the problem to dispel some myths about good coaching and to help coaches erase some bad habits, she has seen in the profession Being a coach is more about the being than the doing. Coaches need to appreciate the value of being wholly present to a client to notice the energic dynamic between two people or more. She implores coaches to get out of their own heads-“overthinking is the enemy of the coach” “just be with your client” In addition to her book she is about to Launch a new program in Partnership with WBECS called Breakthrough Coaching. A program designed for experienced coaches to genuinely upgrade their coaching to have a real impact with clients. Marcia shared an example of using Breakthrough coaching with one of her clients who was concerned about having a difficult conversation. She helped her client see what was really going on and what was presenting as the topic was really about personal responsibility. Covid-19 has amplified how we are experiencing emotions. We need to be able to self -regulate. She shares a lovely vignette with her own coach that demonstrates the power of reflection. Marcia shared some practical tips for Leaders of tips as we parted the conversation. She reminded leaders that “People want your presence more than they want your perfection” She shared that her book is also for Leaders; it is a real manual for helping leaders help others think about their thinking. As a parting thought Marcia reminded us that change is not just a conceptual construct. It is real phenomenon. It means we have to be comfortable with “not knowing” we don't know anything for certain right now and that is OK.   Resources: the following include the resources we alluded to over the course of our conversation   https://www.Covisioning.com wbecs.com Reynolds.M;Coach the Person, Not the Problem: A Guide to Using Reflective Inquiry, Outsmart Your Brain; The Discomfort Zone; and Wander Woman all by Dr. Reynolds.M.

Chey, on the other hand, hails from Ottawa, but has served as a language and PE teacher for just over 20 years in the same middle school as his co-host. During our chat, they share how they began their podcasting journey by simply allowing their passion for education to flourish in other arenas. By speaking with, not at, Chey and Pav have not only developed an impressive network of educators that have undoubtedly benefited but they have also learned and grown through this process to become better educators themselves. We also discussed the power of building relationships and how shared experiences, such as those that we are currently experiencing with this global pandemic, help to strengthen and validate the work that we are doing. The conversation continued as we explored how educators can, and should, amplify their voices, which can be done through so many formats and mediums. As a bonus we get to hear the background story of why Chey is known as the Gym Guy. Enjoy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out Chey & Pav here The Staff Room Podcast: Twitter Podcast The Drive: Twitter Show Check out these great shoutouts www.schoolrubric.com www.voiced.ca ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information about the host, visit his website or connect with him on Twitter. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecounternarrative/support
