Today we welcome Dr. Erin Elliott for her second appearance here on the pod and her colleague Dr. Tarun Agarwal!   Dr. Erin Elliott grew up South of Boise (i.e. Southern California) but went away to a small NAIA school in Western New York in 1995 where she played collegiate soccer and graduated summa cum laude from Houghton College. After graduating Creighton Dental School in 2003, she settled in North Idaho to begin her general dentistry career at Post Falls Family Dental. She has a special interest in DentalSleep Medicine. She has lectured extensively on this topic and loves to spread the message that sleep apnea, snoring and insomnia can be screened for in your dental office AND can be treated. She is an active member of her local American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the past president and a diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.   Dr. Tarun Agarwal, DDS is considered one of the top dentists in the country. He is a recognized speaker, author, and dental leader. He has been featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and News 14 Carolina. Dr. Agarwal has been awarded '40 under 40' Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal.  He is regularly invited to teach other dentists around the world and recently built a training center within the practice dedicated to sharing his expertise.   Most importantly he is a loving husband and dedicated father of three wonderful children. His biggest accolade was being voted 'Best Dad in the World' by 2 of his 3 kids.   Today's episode is generously sponsored by our peeps at Phillips and their new Zoom delivered whitening kit! The demand for teeth whitening went down during the pandemic but with the world transitioning back into real life with parties and get-togethers for the upcoming holiday season, Irene has had an influx of patients at her practice asking for teeth whitening services. Finding that her inventory was low, she turned to the folks at Phillips and their Zoom delivered whitening service. All you need is to take a digital scan or impression and send it to the proprietary lab with a prescription like you would fill out for a mouth/sports guard or night guard. Phillips Zoom will then ship the whitening kit directly to your patient. Irene then created an instructional video that she could email to patients on how to use the product! Not only does this save the patient time, but it also saves the practice time and resources by not having to have the patient return to the office for the whitening treatment! It also gets the patient onboard and makes them a part of their own treatment plan. See the link below for more information on Phillips Zoom Delivered!   https://www.philips.ca/c-e/pe/teeth-whitening/philips-zoom-delivered.html   ------------------------------------------------------   Dr. Elliott and Dr. Agarwal share with Irene and Katrina how they met 5 years ago following a guest appearance Dr. Elliott made on another podcast that led to a small orthodontic scandal and how they have been working together ever since! They discuss the biggest challenge holding dentists back in their practice with sleep as well as how modern hygienists can bridge the gap between a patient's expectations of what a basic teeth cleaning appointment is and how to encourage them to take their treatment into their own hands.   Dr. Agarwal goes on to talk about why he has implemented digital impressions in his practice, the exciting outcomes of this implementation, how many scanners he currently has in his practice, as well as the culture of his practice and how important it is to him to invest in his staff and make sure they are fully participating in the culture that he has built.   They both share how they approach conversations around orthodontics with patients, and Dr. Elliott explains what Vivos is and how she feels about it. Lastly, they provide insight on the importance of the relationship between the dentist and the hygienist and tips on how a hygienist can get their dentist onboard with wok they are interested in infusing into their practice.   Reach out to Dr. Erin Elliott at:   @erinelliottdds on Instagram and Facebook   Reach out of Dr. Tarun Agarwal at:   @tbonespeaks on all social platforms except twitter or at his podcast: Tbone Speaks Podcast     ------------------------------------------------------   As always, our hosts encourage you to leave them a rating and review!   Find more episodes at https://www.toothordare.ca/        Follow us on Instagram! Regardless of the number of tools or procedures you add to your practice, the principles of dentistry don't change. Whether it's done by hand or with a robot arm, the job will always revolve around a person's mouth. What does change is the information we align our brand of dentistry with—being rigid in this industry will not make for a successful practice. It's why we must pursue continuous education and attend masterminds. Not only do these keep us up to date on new knowledge, they offer us various opportunities to connect with other practitioners who could be future business partners.Today, I share why I started hosting continuous education events and seminars. I describe the many professional and social benefits of participating in any of our events. I explain why sedation is an overlooked service and why practices should start implementing it. I started my dental practice in 2001 and have made many mistakes along the way, but I've also learned from every one of them. One of the most critical lessons managing a business has taught me is the importance of maintaining practice culture. You can hire the most decorated team members, but at the end of the day, there is always a chance that drama can happen. You certainly don't want drama while you're trying to run a practice in the middle of a pandemic, but is there a way to prevent that?Today, I describe my journey into dentistry starting from the day I graduated. I discuss why dentistry doesn't require as much scaling as other businesses to improve profits. I share the struggles we encountered the year before, how we're getting back on track, and the services and team changes we made. Sleep apnea is commonly discussed in dentistry. I remember visiting dentistry forums in the 2000s—way before social media was even a term—and reading success stories of other dentists with dental sleep. I added sleep in our practice, but to say we had an adequate run would be an overstatement. My team had to abandon it in 2010 because the business model we had wasn't the right fit at the time. It wasn't until I listened to a podcast five years later when I decided to get dental sleep back in my practice. We had professionals teach us the ropes, and the rest is history.Today, I share the story of how I came to include sleep in my practice and why it wasn't a good fit right away. I recount when I removed dental sleep from my practice, when I decided to get it back, and what went right the second time. I explain what the 4-step workflow is and how we developed it. He started Westmoore Dental Studio in September of 2019 only to encounter the many challenges wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic barely six months later. He shares how the pandemic affected his newly bought practice and the lessons he learned from the experience. The Economics of Dental Implants - Is there an ROI?

My first few years as a dentist didn't involve dental implants, and most of it was due to my lack of surgical confidence. It wasn't like I needed to include dental implants in my practice - business was booming without it. Then, the Crash of 2008 happened, and it opened my eyes to the importance of offering a variety of services that cater to a broader market. One of these is dental implants, a procedure that, to this day, not many dentists provide. I invested in learning the basics and advanced implant procedures, allowing my practice to grow exponentially. It was one of the best decisions I have made in my career.Today, I share the economics of including implants in your practice, how many you can typically do in a year, and the potential earnings you're missing out on by not offering it. I discuss why there's never a ‘perfect time' to start offering dental implants. I describe my first implant experience and my takeaways from that day. I explain the different side effects of having implants in your practice and what you can expect from our program and course offerings. I also share how technology has made doing implants easier, more profitable, and more efficient than other popular services."Implant dentistry should be done at the highest level; it should be done with the most predictability and the most scalability - and technology delivers that." - Tarun Agarwal This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:The economics in getting started with implant dentistry and if they're worth itWhy there's never a great time to start implantsWhy I used to be a restorative-only dentist for the first few years of my careerWhen I began implant dentistry and why it was difficultWhy you can never know too much about implant dentistryThe first implant I had and the number of PAs it tookThe possible side effects of implant dentistry in your practiceHow implant dentistry taught me to slow down so I can speed upWhy our implant dentistry program is not for everyoneThe road I don't recommend taking to implant dentistryWhy you should have a CBCT in your officeThe ancillary tools you should have for implantsThe number of implants the average successful dentist will do in a yearWhat it takes to plan, place, and restore a dental implantWhat dentists can expect from our retreat and dental programsOur Favorite Quotes:"Getting started is the most important thing." - Tarun Agarwal"I looked at implants as I was going to have a staged approach that I could build upon." - Tarun Agarwal"The beauty of implant dentistry is - the learning will ever stop with implant dentistry." - Tarun AgarwalSubscribe, Connect & Share Your Favorite EpisodesThanks for tuning into this week's episode of T-Bone Speaks Dentistry. There’s always a first time for everything, and it’s no different when it comes to dentistry. It’s not even about how long you’ve been running a practice. Some cases just don’t come to us, but dentists should actively seek out doing any treatment for the first time. More than just getting the experience, the people you meet and work with, the mindset you must possess, and the processes you will learn can be life-changing from both a business and personal perspective. Today, I share the story of my first hybrid patient and why I decided to take the case. I discuss the steps involved when it comes to hybrids, my experience working with a dental surgeon, and what I learned from them. I explain what type of hybrid cases you should have in your practice and how you can provide the most seamless customer experience. I describe your front-office team's role and why I believe they are the bottleneck of our practice. I discuss how a medical representative can help prepare your team for new procedures and services. I also share advice for those who want to be in the dental industry and what I wish I knew when I was getting started."I encourage every surgically-oriented dentist to get into doing hybrids yourself. Dr. Elliott has lectured extensively on this topic and loves to help general dentists extend this life-saving service to their patients. She is an active member of her local American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the past president and a Diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy. One of our favorite people Dr. Tarun Agarwal is herewith me today to talk about the Millennial Mastermind event we will be hosting together in January. Dr. Agarwal is known as T-Bone and the host of the T-Bone Speaks podcast. He also the founder of Raleigh Dental Arts. He is excited about sharing his experience and mistakes with younger dentists to help them move forward faster. He has been a mentor of mine and had a huge impact on my life and practice. Having accountability and access to a group of like minded individuals makes progressing so much faster and easier. There will be weekends, monthly coaching calls, individual sessions, and the ability to have office meetings and watch clinical dentistry. All aspects of dentistry will be covered from clinical, business, and mindset including short-term, medium-term, and long-term thinking. You can find our Dr. Tarun Agarwal here: T-Bone Speaks Podcast T-Bone Speaks Facebook @Tbonespeaks on Twitter Tarun Agarwal on Instagram drA@Raleighdentalarts.com Raleigh Dental Arts Show Notes: [01:40] Dr. Agarwal feels that a millennial mastermind will allow him to make the most impact while also having a positive impact on himself. [01:56] He wants to disrupt and help people figure out how to get on the right track. [02:48] Dr. Agarwal has had a ton of success and a millennial mastermind and giving back is really his sweet spot. [03:22] Dr. Agarwal is only 42 years old. He has been in the business for almost 20 years. [03:53] He started a practice from scratch and had to deal with insurance issues. [04:29] Great things happen when you put together a small group of motivated individuals who want to achieve great things for themselves and others. [04:48]  Dr. Agarwal calls himself experienced not an expert. He pivoted from a fee-for-service practice to an insurance based practice to focusing on cosmetics and adding services. [05:36] The mastermind is about helping people and assisting young dentists to getting where they want to be faster. [06:05] The first two years of your practice are the most important of your profession. [06:35] This is great for other people who want to be part of a group and associated with those who are trying to push the envelope. [07:00] Dr. Agarwal feels that people spend too much time consuming information and not enough time doing and practicing. [07:52] Another important thing is to actually define what you want and what your values are, so you know that the things you are trying are in alignment with what you want. [08:20] Short-term thinking is about survival. Medium-term thinking is about creating the procedures and practices that you actually want to do. Long-term thinking is about generating personal balance. [09:50] They'll also cover clinical aspects in the mastermind group. Dr. Agarwal wants people to gain from his experience and mistakes. His wife will also talk about the mental attitude. [11:34] There will be weekends, monthly coaching calls, individual sessions, and the ability to have office meetings and watch clinical dentistry. [12:16] Accountability is a huge part of the mastermind. [13:53] Dr. Agarwal has been a great mentor for Sully. [14:59] If you want to participate get in touch with Dr. Agarwal or Sully. [15:43] The first weekend is in January. [16:02] Dr. Agarwal promises that it will be worth it, or he will personally write you a check. As always thanks so much for listening! This episode is totally different from the usual episodes we have. And frankly, I think its pure gold! A month or two ago I had an opportunity to be a part of a mastermind weekend with a lot of talented individuals currently in dentistry and names you are going to be hearing more of in the future. We talked about multiple practice ownership, bringing specialists in, the importance of setting goals, but most importantly how to accomplish your goals, and the importance of being around like-minded people. It's a late night round table with Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Meena Barsoum, Dr. John Pasicznyck, Dr. Erin Elliott, Hootan Shahidi, and myself. It sheds light onto how going to continuing education has allowed me to meet so many great people and how some of them have become such mentors to me. Its late night conversations like this that don't happen with virtual continuing education. I am lucky because not only have I learned stuff to help m practice, but I also have new friends in the industry.  I think it's an episode you can take a lot away from. I hope you enjoy! -Sully

Special thanks to Matt Winstead the Vice President of Oral Arts Dental Lab out of Huntsville, AL for driving up to Nashville to do a podcast about working with the lab. It was also great because we happen to get a surprise guest from Tbone himself who also happened to be in town. Peyman and Oral Arts have had a great working relationship and all three of us agree that there is more to working with your lab then just sending them a script! When was the last time you visited your lab? When was the last time you called them to discuss a case? As a new dentist the lab can be a great asset for not only making you a better dentist, but also making your life easier! In this episode we discuss all this stuff as well as the future of dentistry in regards to using dental labs.  We want to take a moment to thank everyone for listening! Please spread the word and remember to work smarter….not harder!
