In this episode, we welcome one of the foremost scholars in international relations to the podcast, Professor Martha Finnemore. Recognized globally for her pioneering contributions to the field, Finnemore recently received the 2023 Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science alongside Alexander Wendt. This prestigious accolade celebrates their groundbreaking work in constructivism, a theory that has reshaped how we understand international politics by emphasizing the role of shared ideas and norms. In this episode, Finnemore reflects on the journey and impact of constructivism, tracing its rise from a niche critique to a central framework in global governance. We explore the intellectual and real-world challenges of persuading a discipline once dominated by materialist paradigms to take seriously the power of ideas. With enviable clarity, she explains how constructivism reveals the social underpinnings of power, from norms shaping cybersecurity to the shared authority in the governance of AI. Martha Finnemore is University Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University. A leading scholar in global governance, international organizations, and social theory, her award-winning books include Rules for the World and The Purpose of Intervention. Her research has appeared in top journals like International Organization and World Politics. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has held research appointments at Brookings and Stanford and received fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation and the United States Institute of Peace. Marieke Louis and Lucile Maerten's book, Why International Organizations Hate Politics: Depoliticizing the World, draws on the extensive literature on functionalism and the related topic of technocracy, on anti-politics and bureaucractic multilateralism, and the wider, crosssectional research on expertise, knowledge and technicization, to systematically analyse and shine new light on the less explored topic of depoliticization.  Through current and historical case studies they examine behind the facades to reveal the common structures, mechanisms and logics of the depoliticization process at work and point to the unintended consequences and impacts on the very issues that IOs were created to address. Their argument is carefully constructed and very nuanced and they invite us to consider their whole book and to question everyday practices that may, as they say, “backlash”. These long time residents of Del Ray know that media is merely a vehicle for delivering stories. And the quality of a story is only as good as the state of the person's mind that developed it. In this Del Ray Vibe podcast episode, Aldo and Marilyn talk about how they routinely and strategically make plans to disconnect their minds from DC's fast paced culture and the stress of beltway politics. They believe this approach is important to producing quality media that stands up to the competition of the high stakes marketplace of storytelling that Washington DC is known for as it serves as the world’s political epicenter.
