"No matter what we navigate, adversities or joys alike, there are elements of who we are that are innate. I don't think they change just because circumstances change. I actually don't think we change at all. We just evolve."Mallory Weggemann was just 18 years old when a series of routine epidural injections for back pain left her with no movement from the waist down. Now, 17 years later, Mallory is a gold medal paralympian; an author, filmmaker and motivational speaker; and a fierce advocate for the disability community. In 2021, Mallory released her memoir LIMITLESS to share her journey and to empower others to overcome life's obstacles. And last year, Mallory and her husband released Watershed, a powerful documentary about her life story, including the couple's struggles with infertility. On top of that, Mallory brought home gold and silver medals from the Paralympic Games in Paris, making her a seven time medalist.During this conversation, Mallory and I discuss how she fell in love with the sport of swimming, what helped her navigate the trauma of becoming paralyzed, and the kinds of conversations she hopes to spark about disability in the world. Mallory's drive and determination to achieve the seemingly impossible, her advocacy on behalf of others, and her refusal to give up even when things seem insurmountable make Mallory Weggemann a Firestarter. To read more inspiring stories from Firestarters like Mallory, preorder my book “Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark Into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age” at firedupbook.com.My new book Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark Into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, is available for preorder! "I hope I've helped to create a framework where people find a way and feel like their voice can make a difference because I have seen how just one voice can make a difference."In 2022, after 18 months of fertility treatment, Texan Amanda Zurawski and her husband learned she was pregnant. However, at 18 weeks, doctors told Amanda she had miscarried. And then, because of Texas's abortion ban, those same doctors denied Amanda the healthcare she urgently needed and she nearly died from septic shock.Amanda has since become an advocate for abortion and reproductive care, and was the lead plaintiff in Zurawski v. Texas, the first lawsuit brought by patients challenging a state on its abortion bans since the fall of Roe v. Wade. Her case is featured in a new documentary by the same name.Earlier this year, Amanda was named a TIME Woman of the Year, a very deserved honor. As you listen to Amanda tell her story, you'll hear how brave and fierce she is, how her life has been turned upside down in all the right ways, and what's next on her journey from athlete to communications professional to an incredible advocate for women's rights. THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE: Today you'll hear me explore what it means to become an authentic leader... you're going to have to do it awkward. Yep, it's awkward before it's elegant. I am seeking to learn how to embrace more of that process and lean INTO the awkward instead of wish it way or want it to be different. The "shoulds" around it being different are usually things we learned from the world around us... always wanting to present something finished/polished/perfected, but the real secret I'm seeking to embrace is that the awkward part is actually just LIFE. Can you embrace more of your awkward? Maybe we can do it together! Now I Become Myself May Sarton (1912–1995)Now I become myself. It's takenTime, many years and places;I have been dissolved and shaken,Worn other people's faces,Run madly, as if Time were there,Terribly old, crying a warning,“Hurry, you will be dead before—“(What? Before you reach the morning?Or the end of the poem is clear?Or love safe in the walled city?)Now to stand still, to be here,Feel my own weight and density! The black shadow on the paperIs my hand; the shadow of a wordAs thought shapes the shaperFalls heavy on the page, is heard. All fuses now, falls into placeFrom wish to action, word to silence,My work, my love, my time, my faceGathered into one intenseGesture of growing like a plant. As slowly as the ripening fruitFertile, detached, and always spent,Falls but does not exhaust the root,So all the poem is, can give,Grows in me to become the song,Made so and rooted so by love. Now there is time and Time is young.O, in this single hour I loveAll of myself and do not move.I, the pursued, who madly ran,Stand still, stand still, and stop the sun!ABOUT: Welcome to a Fireside Friday Recording. THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE: Today's Fireside Friday was about being TIRED. Part of this is from the time change, but another level of it, is simply poor stewardship of our own energy. If we want to love and lead at the level of our soul, that means that we have to create time and space to give her what she needs. AND the only way we know what she needs? Learning to listen to her instruction. Advocating that we actually have time and space TO listen... Choosing to take time, space and effort in tending ourselves IS loving others well. “For women, people of color, and anyone on the margins, there's a culture and society that wants to dominate us; to keep us oppressed and in line. The more that we fight through it, the better off we are and the more fires we can start to disrupt the world around us.”Alencia Johnson is an award-winning commentator, political advisor, leader and now an author who is teaching people how to be everyday disruptors. After working on presidential campaigns of President Obama, Senator Warren, and President Biden, Alencia went to work for Planned Parenthood where she helped create “Stand with Black Women," a campaign to call attention to Black people's bodily autonomy and dignity. Alencia's debut book Flip The Tables: The Everyday Disruptor's Guide to Finding Courage and Making Change, a manual for finding your audacity, shaking up the status quo, and creating a better world, is out now.During our conversation, Alencia and I discuss the life lessons she took away from being raised by activists, the mental and physical health struggles that helped her focus on her personal fulfillment, and how she found the courage to be an agitator for good. Alencia is a strong and compassionate leader, a bold and confident risk-taker, and a courageous warrior for justice and equality. "Imposter syndrome, this feeling that we think we're not good enough, we're not smart enough, we're not prepared enough, we're not ready enough has really held us back. And that imposter syndrome is a con. It's a lie we've been told to keep progress dismantled."Today on the Firestarters podcast, I'm talking with Reshma Saujani, an incredible activist who has spent more than a decade fighting for women and girls' economic empowerment, to close the gender gap in the tech sector, and advocating for structural changes moms need - like affordable child care and paid leave. Reshma was the first Indian American woman to run for Congress, is the founder of Girls Who Code, is a best-selling author, as well as a TED Talk speaker. In this conversation, Reshma and I talk about how she got into the work of empowering girls, what it's like to be in the tech space as a woman, why imposter syndrome is a con, and what we need to do to support women and girls in the future. Episode: 1254 A new look at the wheel: the problem of rotation. Today, another look at the invention of the wheel.
Tanner Linsley, creator of TanStack Query and TanStack Router, continues expanding the Tanner-verse with a new TanStack Start framework. It's a full-stack React framework powered by TanStack Router, Vinxi, and Vite, and boasts all the mainstays of a JavaScript framework today, including SSR, streaming, server function support, RPCs, and more. With the release of the new Apple operating system, iOS 18, comes new updates to the Safari browser and its WebKit rendering engine. A couple notable highlights for Safari 18 are “distraction control” where users can hide distracting items on web pages like sign-in banners, cookie preference popups, and newsletter signup overlays, and iPhone mirroring and remote inspection. And the Astro team is at it again with the release of Astro 5.0 beta. This new release introduces the Astro Content Layer, a flexible, extensible way to interact with content in Astro, no matter where it comes from. Big news this week when it's announced that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has moved ChatGPT from using Next.js to using Remix. While both metaframeworks rely on React under the hood, Remix seems a bit less opinionated about how teams might want to structure their projects to best suit their unique use cases and needs.TypeScript has also released v5.6, and amongst the many improvements is one many day-to-day TS users will benefit from: disallowed nullish and truthy checks. Although the name sounds impressive and confusing, what it boils down to is: if TS identifies an if statement that will always evaluate to true or false because a dev forgot to actually invoke a function or misplaced parentheses or [insert many, many ways we introduce bugs into our code], TypeScript will now throw an error. Because the JavaScript gods demand at least one new framework or meta-framework each week, this week's tribute is HonoX. We previously discussed new framework Hono back in episode 32, when it debuted as a lightweight framework built on web standards and able to run on any JS runtime, and now it's back with meta-framework HonoX.And the team introduces a new segment this week called Fire Starters. Each week we'll try to find a more obscure bit of HTML, CSS or JS info from around the web, and talk about it so we can all learn something new. In the first half of this episode, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler is joined by Colonel William Davis and special guest Erik Robey, HCSO's Director of Legislative and Community Affairs. Together, they discuss your rights under the 2nd Amendment and the efforts that some legislators have undertaken to restrict them. On May 9, 2019, at 2:28 a.m., a third-floor occupant, Ernest Lee, called 911 to report a fire at his townhome in Edgewood, Maryland. The fire would ultimately result in a tragic outcome, injuring two residents and claiming the lives of Mr. Lee and two others. Among the devastating aftermath, the Office of the State Fire Marshal found suspicious evidence related to the fire which prompted the Harford County Sheriff's Office to investigate the incident as an intentional act of arson. In the second half of the podcast, Sheriff Gahler is joined by Corporal Tammy Burns as she recounts her experience working on this tragic case and the arrest of a particular individual in an effort to bring some justice to the victims and their families.

Here at the Haunted UK Podcast we have sifted through hundreds of incredible cases of ghost sightings, strange encounters with mysterious creatures, sightings of dark shadow entities, alleged psychic ability, ancient and modern-day curses, eerie premonitions, haunted houses, poltergeist encounters, time slip stories ... the list goes on ... but there's still one topic of the paranormal which we find absolutely fascinating. One topic, which we've never covered. An avenue of the paranormal which is so strange, and so incredibly rare, that when it happens ... attention is drawn to It ... but that attention rarely seems to make the news. Is it because that the majority of people would find these particular stories too unbelievable ... too far outside the boundaries of what is deemed credible? This is episode 42 of the Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we go in search of paranormal firestarters. Do you have an interesting story which you'd be willing to share with the show? If so, your story could feature in our end of season Listeners' Stories episodes. Please get in touch with the show via our new Haunted UK Podcast Website, or email us at contactus@hauntedukpodcast.com, marking the subject as Listener Story. All stories are treated with the utmost privacy and respect – if you wish to remain anonymous – that's no problem at all. Alternatively, you could drop us a voice note via Instagram, and with your permission, we will play your voice note on the show. It would be great for your voice to bring your very own story to life. We're waiting for your stories ... Here at Haunted UK Podcast Towers, we're committed to providing you with high quality great episodes time after time, and as a fully independent podcast we research, write, edit, record, mix, master and publish everything ourselves. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley canceled a series of games with BYU following allegations of racism against the Cougars fans. Jason exposes her hypocrisy and suggests a different team she should cancel if she actually cared about her team's well-being. Memphis is a murderous hellscape. Why has the “Birthplace of Rock & Roll” become the final resting place for so many? Jason connects the dots between the culture and the killings. Duke Volleyball's Rachel Richardson sparked controversy when she claimed a BYU fan repeatedly called her the N-word; turns out she may be the new Jussie Smollett. In the most bizarre speech in American presidential history, Joe Biden did his best Hitler impersonation and declared war on half of America. The bulk of this week's FIRE-STARTERS have been about the lack of masculinity in this country. We live in a culture that wants women to destroy the patriarchy and tribalism of men. Barstool Sports' frat boy Dave Portnoy got into a heated exchange with BlazeTV contributor Alex Stein and actually fired an old friend of Stein's because he called Stein to defend Barstool Sports. John Singleton's 2001 film “Baby Boy” explores the theme of matriarchal culture in black communities, and 20 years later, it looks like a documentary reflecting modern-day society. The baby-mama culture is revealing its damage on men like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Nick Cannon. The concept of maintaining morals and responsibility seems to be lost on this new generation of Americans. Shout Out from Jason: Do you love gifts? Black lives only matter when it's a white murderer. This is the narrative that must never be broken. Ignore the thousands of black-on-black murders like pee wee football coach Mike Hickmon, whose recent death was sparked by former NFL player Aqib Talib. ESPN may hide Hickmon's death, but the coaches at the scene of the crime won't in an exclusive interview with Jason. The thug lifestyle lived out by Aqib Talib and talked about in hip hop music is a lifestyle that has rotted society and our kids. Why does the culture often reward the wicked?
