Welcome to the Vikings Postgame Report. The Minnesota Vikings made a statement against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday with a 42-21 win at U.S. Bank Stadium. Sam Darnold was on fire today. Darnold finished the game 22-of-28 passing, had 347 yards in the air, and 5 touchdowns split between Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson. Darnold almost had a perfect QBR when he finished with a 157.9 on the day. Justin Jefferson became the fastest player to 7,000+ yards in his career and ended the day with 7 receptions for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jordan Addison also had a monster day, finishing with 133 yards in the air and 3 touchdowns. Aaron Jones was the leading rusher for the Vikings, finished with 73 yards on the ground, and hit paydirt for 15 yards for the final score of the game. Will Reichard came back this week and finished the game 6-of-6 in XPA's and 0-of-1 in FG attempts. Defensively, the Vikings squad bent but didn't break giving up 496 total yards but had 2 critical interceptions on Cousins at key moments. Josh Metellus snagged a pass across the middle in the 2nd quarter and Byron Murphy Jr. had a 1-handed grab on the 2-yard line late in the 4th quarter. Jamin Davis tallied the lone Vikings sack on the day and C.J. Ham recovered a key special team's fumble recovery in the 4th quarter. The Vikings will be back at U.S. Bank Stadium next Monday night against the Chicago Bears for Monday Night Football. Paul Allen and Pete Bercich breakdown the Vikings 6th straight victory, including: Sam Darnold going to another level this week, turnovers once again being the key stat for the game, the importance of playing a complete game, Atlanta's choice to play our WR's with single coverage, and the highly competitive playoff push facing the Vikings for the final 4 weeks. Plus, Kevin O'Connell and Sam Darnold spoke in the postgame press conferences about the victory. The Ravens won a close game against the Bengals for the Thursday Night Game as their big test against the Steelers looms close on week 11. For the Jaguars they lost to the Vikings as Trevor Lawrence didn't play due to an injury. The Falcons lost to the Saints for a divisional loss, but the Flacons are still in control of the NFC North. Tampa Bay lost to the 49ners in a close game as Tampa Bay tries to salvage their season. The Chargers continue to rise after their win against the Titans. Can the Chargers be come of the most dangerous teams in the NFL in a couple of years? The Jets crashed and burned again after their loss to the Cardinals. For the Dallas Cowboys, the drama continues as they lost to the Eagles for another lopsided loss in their home stadium. Micha Parsons also threw Mike McCarthy under the bus. The Lions also won in a 4th quarter thriller against the Texans. Could Lions head coach Dan Campbell become NFL coach of the year? A Tale of Two Parishes

It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2024 29:00

The city of New Orleans is in Orleans Parish. For reasons that are mainly economic and infrastructure-related, Orleans and neighboring Jefferson Parish are inter-dependent.  The two parishes are very different. The rivalry between them isn't on the scale of the Saints and the Flacons, but it's definitely real. If you live in Jefferson Parish, the basic perception is, “Sure, New Orleans has great restaurants and music clubs but it's dangerous, dirty, and dysfunctional.” If you live in New Orleans, the perception is, “Sure, everything works in Jefferson Parish, but it's sterile and soulless.” Nothing illustrates the real-world differences between the parishes better than the business stories of this editon of Out to Lunch's two guests. The Tale In Jefferson Parish, the heart of the retail economy is Veterans Boulevard. There used to be a bowling alley on Veterans, called Paradise Lanes. In 1995 it was knocked down and replaced by a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The owners of the bowling alley retained a retail space in the New Barnes & Noble building. They called their new store Paradise Cafe & Gifts. 21 years later, in 2016, two of the owner's granddaughters, sisters Jenny McGuinness and Jessica Woodward, along with their mom, Linda Dalton, transformed the store into a home accessories and gift shop, and called it Phina. Next, they opened two more Phina stores – one on Metairie Road and another on Harrison Avenue. In 2023 they bought a company called The Basketry, that specializes in personal and corporate gift baskets. Today the combined companies have 50 employees and business is booming.  Our story from Orleans Parish is equally successful. It's based on a single word. A word that, if you live in Orleans Parish, has enormous practical and symbolic meaning: Potholes. Nothing typifies the perception of the dysfunction of the city of New Orleans like the pot-holed state of our streets. In 2019, an anonymous person started an Instagram account illustrating the sorry condition of our streets. The name of the account is the sentence many New Orleanians say or think as they drive or bike around town, Look at This Effin Street. (On Instagram "effin" is the f-word. Because none of our podcasts are explicit we're sticking with "effin" to avoid the bot-police.) The Look at This Effin' Street Instagram account was an instant success. People started contributing photos of New Orleans streets and today the account has over 120,000 followers – including by the way, The City of New Orleans. How do you monetize this kind of social media success? You can't exactly sell potholes. But you can sell merch about potholes. And that's what the anonymous founder of Look at This Effin Street did. He contracted with a local merch company, InkMule, to make stickers, baseball caps, T-shirts and other pot-hole merch. The anonymous business-person behind this successful social-media driven venture is still anonymous. On this edition of Out to Lunch we referring to him as Effin Street. Two Parishes Next time you're driving along Veterans Boulevard, Harrison Avenue, or Metairie Road, you might notice one of the three Phina stores. But you probably won't think anything at all about the street you're driving on. If you keep driving east from there on surface streets, you'll cross the parish line into Orleans Parish. At that point you may well find yourself remarking, “Look at this effin' street.” Jenny and Effin Street's respective experiences are model examples of the differences between Orleans and Jefferson parishes. But their histories and businesses are also representative of the synergy that exists between the two parishes and the people who live, work and play in both of them. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns on St. Charles Avenue in Uptown New Orleans. We're going to mock the Seahawks first and second round picks.  | Seahawks have 1:5; 1:20; 2:37 and 2:52. They have 26 players signed to the 2023 roster (fewest in NFL) and only | 26 million dollars in cap space. It is imperative that they draft impact players at the top and bottom of the draft. | Glaring holes in the lineup: interior and edge d linemen; Strong Safety (Jamal Adams is the only SS on the roster with Ryan Neal getting signed away; WR3 (Dareke Young is de facto WR3 right now but he's totally unproven heading into his second year); Guard (Phil Haynes and Damian Lewis will return as starters but we have no other guards on the roster. | (***NFL Draft music***) with the 5th overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select:  | Adam -- Will Anderson Jr | Robby -- 3 QBs will be gone, leaving only Will Levis. Levis looks fine but is not the gamechanger thant Young, Stroud or possibly Richardson could be at the position. Needing help on the interior D Line and having a decent track record with "character issue" guys in the past, PCJS will select Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia | With the 20th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select:  | Adam -- We will trade this pick along with our 52nd Pick to the Flacons; and select Bijan Robinson | Robby -- This pick will almost certainly get traded to a team at the bottom of the first round who needs an offensive playmaker. If they don't trade it, they take a wide receiver! Jaxson Smith Njigba will be the first WR selected in the NFL draft. He has solid athleticism and very strong route running. He is considered the most pro-ready WR in the class ready to slot into nearly any spot in an NFL offense. If he's available, the Hawks take him. Some mocks have Houston taking him at 12, in which case the Hawks take Zay Flowers out of Boston College. He's short, 5'9" but another great route runner. He would fill into No-E's old slot roll nicely. | With the 37th pick in the NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks select: | Adam -- Joey Porter Jr  | V Robby's Hot Take (5 second intro music... 30 seconds w/ 2 mins of discussion and banter) |  |  | lightning Round | Two listener questions!
