Chapter 29: The Life Manual for Healing in your 20s Whether it's dealing with chronic UTI's or a parent with cancer, so many of us experience chronic illness at some point in our 20s. It could be your own medical journey or having to help a loved one through theirs–regardless, it's not easy to navigate. But what if I told you that shifting your mindset and practicing self-love can actually aid your physical wellness?  Today, we are speaking with Dana Croschere and Krisanna Sexton, the masterminds behind the film “Love Heals.” After supporting one another through chronic illness within their relationship, they are now on a mission to spread love, health, and healing. Dana and Krisanna took 18 people to a retreat center in Sedona, AZ to work on healing in nontraditional ways, and they have used the film to share with the world their stories and the power of using the mind-body connection to heal yourself.  THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS:  Here are some of Dana and Krisanna's tips on healing yourself through self-love: - Check in with yourself. Ask yourself, what do I need? - Find time to be quiet with yourself and engage in some kind of meditation daily. - Start to trust your intuition. - Obtain “heart-brain coherence” by connecting your brain and your heart. Practice breathing while putting your hand on your heart and bringing up whatever emotions you're feeling. Take breaths envisioning positive emotions moving in and out of your heart space to calm your nervous system.  - Take intentional time away from your phone and connect with nature. - Know that you are your own best healer and everything else is just mirroring back what you already know deep down.  To see their film “Love Heals,” visit their website here. Subscribers to Gaia can also view the film on the app. They are currently working on their next film, “Rescued Hearts,” and you can stay tuned for updates here.  Additional resources Dana and Krisanna recommend: - The book “Dying to Be Me” by Anita Moorjani - Joe Dispenza meditations  - Tony Robbins trainings  - Lee Harris personal development coach Don't forget to follow us on IG and Tiktok @regardlessthepod. Chapter 28: The Life Manual for Finding Stewardship in your 20's Maybe you've been saying you want a new job for months, but you still haven't started applying. Or, maybe you open your computer to check your bank account, but you just can't get yourself to do it. Maybe you need to move out, but you're avoiding scheduling apartment tours. We've all been there–pushing away these big, scary things in our 20s because we don't want to deal with them.  But we all know that if you don't preside over your fears, they'll only continue to grow. Like guest speaker, Shelyna Brown, says: just like a judge in a courtroom, you have the power to preside over your own life.  Shelyna is a visionary leader and advocate for justice. With a two-decade career as a public defender and respected Superior Court judge in Santa Clara, she has since founded the Equality and Social Justice Committee to mentor the next generation of young leaders at San Jose State University. As an author and speaker, Shelyna offers all of us 20-something-year-olds incredible insight into how to preside over our own lives and take control over our realities. Together, we'll be chatting about how to take radical responsibility for your healing, preside over your fears, make big decisions with ease, and trust that the universe has your back.  THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS:  Shelyna's steps on how to take control of your life:  Assess your mindset. Ask yourself: Am I presiding over my mindset? Am I choosing my reality?  Assess your heartset. Ask yourself: What is it I believe about myself? Assess your skill set. Ask yourself: Am I doing the things I want to be doing?  Really sit down and love yourself.  Here are some action items to remind yourself what you're here in this world to do, being uniquely you: Meditate and get quiet with yourself Find an accountability partner with whom you can share your goals and keep each other accountable  For more guidance:  Visit Shelyna's website and Instagram  Check out Shelyna's book, Preside, available on Amazon  Watch her recent TEDx Talk Don't forget to follow us on IG and Tiktok @regardlessthepod. Chapter 27: The Life Manual for Personal Development When was the last time you were driving and hit a series of green lights on the road? Rather than stopping and starting every few stop lights, you just happened to get green light after green light. For whatever reason, you were just in the flow. What did that feel like to you?  Finding a flow state–whether it's driving through green lights, hitting a big milestone in your career, finally being aligned in a romantic relationship, or just feeling like the universe is on your side–is an undeniably amazing feeling.  But it's not always easy to find this ideal flow state. Today we're chatting with Jason Crouse, also known as @saintsofflow on Instagram. As a “flow coach,” he empowers individuals and organizations to optimize their performance and achieve their personal and professional goals. Tune in as we spill all the secrets on how to truly achieve the flow state you're craving in all areas of your life, from engaging in self-reflection to rewire your subconscious brain patterns, to fine tuning your environment to let in abundance. You might want to get a pen and paper for this one… Jason's metaphors and syllabus steps are gonna be extra juicy.  THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS:  Figure out what “flow” means to you. Start asking yourself questions like, how can you make your environment more conducive to letting in flow?  Get clear on what you want in life and what you want in the future. Map out your personal and professional goals. Imagine what being in “flow” would be like, and write it out.  Listen to signals from the external world or any spiritual signs you may be receiving. For instance, if you walk past someone at a coffee shop and overhear something that inspires you or resonates with your goals, take it as a sign. Tune in.  Continue to show up. Get to work. Chase your goals and believe that you can achieve this flow state. You will be amazed by where you can end up in a short amount of time with a strong commitment and belief in yourself. Chapter 26: The Life Manual for Sex and Dating  POV: You finally made it back to his house after getting dinner and drinks. He closes the blinds, dims the lights, and maybe even asks Alexa to play the Weeknd radio station on Spotify. This was the moment you were waiting for all night. Or was it? Suddenly, you're not so sure if you want to go all the way–after all, it's only the second date.  Sex (or lack thereof) is a huge part twentysomethinghood. And when we don't properly learn about sex in school or normalize talking about it in our daily lives, it's easy to abandon ourselves and feel confused or shameful in intimate situations.  Today, we're giving you the chapter in your life manual for dating that goes beyond the birds and the bees to help you have more fulfilling sexual experiences that serve your future self.  Naomi Ruth is going to help us redefine sex to find self-love and empowerment in our intimate experiences. Naomi is a dedicated sex and relationship coach who founded Soulflame Coaching to provide individuals and couples with an approach to sex and love that fosters safety, trust, and confidence. Today, we'll be discussing a fresh understanding of how sex physically alters the chemicals in your body, why we feel post-sex guilt, the importance of pleasuring yourself, and how to have hard conversations around sex while navigating hookup culture in our 20s. THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS:  Practice the Stoplight Method. Before putting yourself in an environment where it could get intimate, know what you want to do for sure (green light), know what you're open to potentially exploring (yellow light), and know your hard boundaries (red light). Have the “pleasure talk” before you are alone with your romantic partner.  Practice pleasing yourself. When you know what you like, you'll feel more empowered (and have more pleasure) when you are with your partner.  Be intentional with your intimate relationships. Ask yourself questions like, What do I want from this experience? What do I want out of this relationship? And communicate with your partner to make sure you are on the same page.  Above all, do not put anyone else's pleasure, comfort, and safety above your own. And she just got married to herself in a beautiful ceremony celebrating self-love.  Tune in as we talk about what it means to truly move beyond the typical notion of self-love and the benefit of deeply committing to your inner growth. Isabel will walk us through the ins and outs of her wedding, from how she crafted her vows to the metaphorical and spiritual party favors she gave out to her guests. We'll also discuss how to navigate dating in your 20s and manifest your perfect partner, operating from the mindset of knowing you can (1) be complete with yourself AND (2) also be open to creating a beautiful romantic partnership with someone else.   THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS:  Practice embodying and accepting all parts of yourself.  To do this, Isabel recommends: IFS: internal family systems therapeutic practice   Deeply looking at all the voices in our head of all the different archetypes that we carry. This might be a voice in your head that is a people pleaser or chronic self-sabotager, for instance. Remember, all of your flawed internal voices stem from trauma. Once you invest time into seeking self love, you can heal your trauma and come to accept all parts of yourself. Feel all the feelings. Our feelings have messages. Listen. Slow down to receive. If you're moving too fast, it's hard to feel and receive.  MORE RESOURCES: Stay connected with Isabel through https://www.instagram.com/coach.isabelcampanelli/her social media If you are embarking on your own self-love wedding, Mel Robbins has some great advice about focusing on one pillar or one “vow” per year in her podcast here.  Don't forget to follow us on IG and Tiktok @regardlessthepod. Chapter 24: The Life Manual for Dealing with Grief in your 20s We experience loss almost every day in our 20s. Maybe it's a small loss like your partner starts acting differently, you have to find a new roommate, or you're switching teams at your job. Maybe it's a little bigger-- you lost your job, you just graduated college and have to move home, you went through a friend breakup, your situationship ghosted you. Whatever it may be, anytime change occurs and something is lost, it's a death. And it's NORMAL to feel grief. It's NORMAL for things not to be okay sometimes. Today, we are going to unpack what it means to process grief in a streamlined way with expert and author on the subject, Dr. Karen Kramer. Dr. Kramer is going to offer clear steps on how to navigate your grief amidst our society's climate of toxic positivity. We'll discuss the importance of normalizing these feelings in our 20s and how to have honest, raw, and real conversations with other 20somethings in your life. THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS: Practice listening and creating spaces for those in your life. Encourage conversations to be vulnerable by using the phrase, “tell me more,” if someone says they're not having the best day.  To heal your own feelings of grief in a healthy way, follow these steps: Use your logical mind: What is the rational thought and truth about what is going on? Use your heart:  How does this make me feel?  Use your feet: What are the actions I can do to change this feeling? Use your hands: What support do I need today, informal or formal? A friend? A lawyer?  Use your eyes: Can you imagine what the new normal will look like? What is the vision moving forward? Chapter 23: The Life Manual for Healthy Living in your 20s Let's be real: sometimes our health is just not the number one priority on the list. Whether you're binge drinking every weekend in college or stressed and losing sleep over your job, it's not always easy to take care of your physical health in your 20s.  Today we are lucky to have holistic health coach Meghan Swidler, AKA “That Wellness Gal,” share her tips on how to heal some of the most important areas of your body: the gut, skin, and hormones.  Meghan is a bestselling author who wrote From Within, and as an expert in cleansing and detoxification, she guides individuals to live their healthiest lifestyles from the inside out. In this episode, she'll provide some incredible insights, resources, and realistic steps that we can all take to better care for our bodies NOW, preventing issues in the future.  THIS EPISODE'S SYLLABUS STEPS:  Pay attention to your symptoms. Your body is signaling to you what problems need to be fixed. Set times on your calendar to prioritize your health and eating. Maybe that includes grocery shopping on certain days and batch prepping meals.  Eat plant-based whole foods, sleep 7-9 hours a night, move your body, manage your nervous system, stay hydrated, and limit coffee and alcohol.  Implement cleansing modalities into your routines. This can include sweating, infrared sauna, cold immersion, red light therapy, and drinking fresh pressed juices.  Start by working on just one pillar of your health that feels realistic to you, rather than trying to tackle every problem at once.  Remember, it's all about balance.  MORE RESOURCES: Meghan's book, From Within (and her second book is coming soon!) Keeping Students Safe: Understanding Child Trafficking - Genevie Strickland - Morgan Nick FoundationGenevie Strickland of the Morgan Nick Foundation helps us deepen our understanding of human trafficking as well as how educators play a vital role in keeping Arkansas students safe. The internet is one of the single biggest factors affecting our children and their safety in society today. We need to understand why and what affect it has on students learning and beyond. Teen Internet usage and attitudes about safety present potential risks, but also opportunities for education. Internet safety, risky behaviors such as sharing too much information online and sexting, cyberbullying, dangerous internet sites and apps all aid in the harm and exploitation of children. These risky behaviors can be a common link leading to a global issue commonly referred to as Human Trafficking/Sex Trafficking. We need to understand how schools are impacted, why it is critically important for those in educational environments to be involved in the process and understand exactly what trafficking looks like amongst students today. Our safety and prevention education curriculum is taught to children in the school system, providing real world safety, internet safety skills, and abduction prevention education. In March 2020 the world was hit by the COVID 19 pandemic and our education system was greatly impacted as schools revamped to virtual learning. To date we have provided education to more than 850,000 children, families and teachers in Arkansas schools, so the shut down of onsite learning impacted the message we know children so desperately need at this time. Understanding that kids would be online even more while spending time at home doing virtual learning, our office immediately switched gears in search of new ways to get these safety messages to students. We hired two more educators with various backgrounds in education and began the process of constructing a new curriculum from the discipline we already use to educate. This curriculum will support Arkansas Educators, caregivers, parents, and students. Our presentations use the latest technology to create high-impact educational activities for even the most tech-savvy kids of any age group, with the end goal of expanding the safety awareness of children and empowering them to make responsible decisions online and in real life. The Firefly Project was created because the Morgan Nick Foundation believes education is the key to safety. When children recognize the dangers they can make good choices. This curriculum is written to bring the light of truth into a sometimes dangerous and scary world. Good Mourning Groups are for children and teens, kindergarten through 12th grade, who have experienced the death of a family member, relative, or friend. Participating children and teens will be divided into four different age-groups, and there will be nine weekly sessions. Adults related to child and teen participants are also invited to participate in adult support groups. Welcome to this episode where we will be looking at this concept of a "life manual". For the record, every human in this world carries around a virtual life manual in their pocket and this impacts the way he or she sees the world and navigates through life. FYI: This manual is different for each and every one of us. Even people in the same family can end up with a completely different manual that helps them make decisions and guides their expectations about how the world SHOULD ideally work. And now for the lightbulb moment - most of our frustration in life comes from the fact that our manuals don't match up with other people's manuals! This episode will talk about exactly what we can do to live a happier life with less frustration by understanding this simple concept of life manuals. This Dream Big My Friend episode with your host Frances Vidakovic will give you all the best personal development and self help strategies to get you on track to living your best life sooner rather than later. GUEST BIO: Phil Burgess is an independent consultant who helps companies to implement software applications and systems that support their business objectives.  Phil has worked for independent software houses as well as large corporate companies across industry sectors including finance, utilities, legal and fine art. In 2017, Phil launched the I.T. Career Energizer podcast with the goal of helping others to start, develop and grow successful careers in tech. PRESENTER BIO: John Sonmez is a software developer who founded SimpleProgrammer.com to help software developers and other technical professionals advance their careers and to live happier lives.  John is author of the best-selling books “Soft Skills: The Developer’s Life Manual” and “The Complete Software Developer’s Career Guide” as well as host of the Simple Programmer podcast.’ EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Today’s episode of the I.T. Career Energizer Podcast is the 100th in the series, so it is a bit different, something special. Today, it is Phil Burgess himself who is being interviewed by John Sonmez. Phil first got involved in the IT industry in the mid-90s. He has developed and implemented new systems across numerous industries. Today, his focus is on helping others to develop their IT careers. He does so for everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (00.31) – Phil starts, by introducing John Sonmez,  who was his very first podcast guest. Today, it is John who is going to be asking the questions and Phil who will be answering them. (1.32) – John starts by congratulating Phil on his 100th episode. A remarkable achievement, especially when you consider that most podcasters only record around 7 episodes before giving up. John thanks Phil for inspiring so many in the coding and development industry. (3.24) – In true I.T. Career Energizer podcast tradition, John asks Phil to share a unique career tip. Phil says that it is vital to look at your plans and goals, so that you can understand where your career is going. He encourages people to put together a five-year plan. Of course, no IT career is linear and the industry moves fast. So, the plan is just a guide to give you some direction and a way of recognizing where you are. Setting a guiding goal will help you to navigate through the ever-changing world of IT. Particularly, when you regularly review and tweak your plan. Phil explains that pairing a long-term plan with short-term goals is especially helpful. Short-term goals like learning a language, taking on a public speaking engagement, attending more conferences or writing articles are all helpful. Setting goals like these will help you to identify the best ways to grow your skills, network and ultimately move your career forward. (5.24) – At this point, Phil is asked to share his worst career moment. For Phil 4 or 5 years into his career he attended a meeting with senior management and a director. The project was not going well, so the director was trying to motivate everyone and identify the issues. At one point, the director asked a technical question that had clearly been fed to him. When Phil answered it became apparent that the director had no real understanding of the issue, so could not really follow the response. Instead of seeking more understanding, the director tried to belittle Phil in front of about 15 senior managers. It felt terrible. But, it taught Phil the importance of understanding your audience. John says he has had a few similar experiences. It reminds him of one of Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power, one of which is “never outshine the master”. (8.25) – How about your career highlight? For Phil being able to help others with their careers is the thing he enjoys the most.  Running the podcast has enabled him to do this for more people, so for him this has been a career highlight. He has also enjoyed meeting and speaking to so many great professionals. As well as getting feedback from his audience and answering their questions. (11.18) – John asks Phil to share one thing that excites him about the future of a career in IT. Phil says the fact that the possibilities are limitless is the most exciting thing. He went on to say that “the genie is out of the bottle”. In the future, there will be opportunities that we cannot even conceive of right now. John concurs, for example, the idea of a driverless car would have been inconceivable up until a few years ago. Phil commented on the fact that technology touches every aspect of our lives and moves really fast. He goes on to speak about the amazing rate at which the motor car replaced the horse-drawn carriage. In just over a decade, a New York City road went from having one car and dozens of horses on it, in a photo, to being full of Model T. Fords. A strong example of just how fast technology changes our lives. (13.19) – What first attracted you to a career in IT? Phil explains that at university he did a building survey course, something that had nothing to do with technology, whatsoever. As part of the course he was introduced to AutoCAD which was running on Unix systems. For him, it was fascinating. By the time he left university, he was torn between pursuing an IT career working in the building surveyor field. Phil did not know what to do, so he took a local job with a pharmaceutical company. Fortunately, they were in the process of implementing a brand new system that a small software house had built for them. Phil got involved and off the back of that he was offered work by the software firm. That was it, Phil had officially commenced his IT career. (14.50) – What is the best career advice you were given? Phil paraphrased the best piece of advice he has received, so far, by saying - “It's all about the delivery of the message and be able to bring your message to life.” Someone he has worked for, a few times, explained to him that he needed to use stories and examples to add color to the message you are delivering. You have to make it come alive to catch people’s attention and help them to understand and recognize the importance of your message. (15.49) – If you were to start your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Says he would be trying out as many things as he can before settling on something more specific. In particular, he would attend as many conferences as possible, listening, learning and evaluating. He also said that he would focus more on solving problems rather than the actual technology used. (16.31) – What career objectives are you focusing on? Phil wants to grow his reach and influence so that he can help as many people as possible. He is also keen to finish his first book and get it published. Phil also says he wants to make sure that he keeps his podcast going strong. (17.20) – What’s the number one non-technical skill that has helped you in your career? Listening is Phil’s number one non-technical skill. Really listening, rather than simply waiting for the break in the conversation, so you can make your point. Actually, hearing, absorbing and understanding what the other person is trying to say, then, taking the time to think before giving your response. (18.23) – John asks Phil for a parting piece of advice. Phil says you need to remember that “it’s your career.” Of course, you need to achieve the appraisal goals set out by the company you work for. But, you also need to make sure that what you achieve your own goals. It is up to you to progress your career, to learn what you need to know and make sure that you work on the right projects. BEST MOMENTS: (1.05) JOHN – “The IT industry is growing fast and going through a heap of challenges and it won't get better by accident. Thank you so much for playing your part.” (4.21) PHIL – “People need to set maybe a five-year plan in place, in terms of where they're going.” (6.49) PHIL – “Understand your audience when you're actually responding to things like questions.” (8.57) PHIL – “I'm quite keen to empower people.” (17.37) PHIL – “The ability to actually listen and think about what you're hearing before responding, is a really good skill to develop.” (19.25) PHIL – “Think about what you want. Take ownership and responsibility of your own career.” CONTACT PHIL BURGESS: Twitter: https://twitter.com/PhilTechCareer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philburgess/ Website: https://itcareerenergizer.com
