From Go to Grow: How to Effectively Scale Your Brokerage for Continued Success (With Scott Valins) – Episode 81

Broker-to-Broker

With almost 20 years of mortgage experience, Scott Valins hasn't just learned how to run a successful brokerage, he knows how to scale across the country. Moving, but maintaining his brokerage after the market crash, Scott now holds offices in both California and New York. Scott is calling his next wholesale endeavor “Go Rascal.” The new brokerage is Scott's way of scaling his existing business. With a team of almost 40 processors, loan officer assistants, and loan officers, Go Rascal is primed for a fast start. But for Scott, scaling is not only about increasing profits, but also about challenging himself to take on the role of CEO. While his brokerage brought in $240 million in loans last year and is on track to do $300 million in business this year, Scott served as the primary loan originator. Switching positions and delegating responsibilities that used to be his will bring its own challenges but is also necessary to scale.  To continue to scale his business, Scott first had to hire the right people. That started with an operations expert and a sales manager, both of who lacked mortgage experience, but they each brought their own unique and valuable expertise to the table. Once those individuals were locked in, Scott had to adjust his mindset. At that point, his brokerage was running like a well-oiled machine while he was focused primarily on origination. To scale, he had to come to terms with pulling back on his origination so he could spend more time focusing on scaling. It also required Scott to take a step back and determine what he does well and what areas he needed to hire people who could fill those gaps.  Scott is also a vice-chair on AIME'S Community Committee, which is focused on promoting business development that serves the entire wholesale channel. He sees the group as the formal voice of the Brokers Are Better community with a commitment to supporting both new LOs and seasoned loan officers. For Scott, the group served as a major resource that he and countless other brokers used to navigate the chaos of the 2020 pandemic and refi-boom. That sort of education is a major area Scott wants to continue growing as part of the committee. “Education is the backbone of the community,” he said. Scott's parting advice: Network, but know there is more than one way to network. You need to find what works for you and do it. Scott networks less by engaging with public posts in the Brokers Are Better Facebook group, instead opting to private message brokers to offer advice or answer their questions. For in-person networking, like at AIME Fuse 2021, he suggests finding a local broker and connecting over issues in your local market.  Notes: Scott's Journey into the Broker Channel (1:14)Community Committee (6:21)Helping Your Local Community (15:18)Scaling Your Brokerage (17:25)Parting Advice (32:31) This episode is sponsored by Guaranty Home Mortgage

On this special episode of Monetize the Mic, Booking Agent and Team Lead Riley gets the chance to sit down with Scott Schober to talk all about podcast interview strategy! Scott is the President and CEO of Berkeley Varitronics Systems, a 48-year-old, New Jersey-based provider of advanced, world-class wireless test and security solutions. He is the author of three best-selling security books: Hacked Again, Cybersecurity is Everybody's Business, and Senior Cyber. Scott is a highly sought-after author and expert for live security events, media appearances, and commentary on the topics of ransomware, wireless threats, drone surveillance and hacking, cybersecurity for consumers, and small business. He is often seen on ABC News, Bloomberg TV, Al Jazeera America, CBS This Morning News, CNN, Fox Business, and many more networks. Scott also serves as the CSO and Chief Media Commentator for Cybersecurity Ventures and sits on several cyber advisory boards for various companies. Riley asks Scott about the preparation process for all of his media appearances and podcast interviews. How does Scott create a structure around such a busy process? Scott's first piece of advice is, it's never good to be too comfortable. Once you feel like you're in your comfort zone, you should try to get out of it. It's great to be confident but you still want to have some butterflies. If you're too confident, sometimes you won't know what to say.  He also highly recommends spending the time to educate yourself and prepare. Before any media appearance or podcast interview, Scott always reads a few articles about the topic he wants to discuss. He then digests it and meditates on it. When he goes on a podcast, he always likes to make it a goal to have three stats that he can remember off the top of his head. Scott will weave in a statistic to bring home the point in his interviews! Most importantly, Scott explains that you have to be true to yourself and be authentic. While doing this, you can apply practical tips that are not too complex. By doing that, people will walk away and have learned something that they can apply in their own lives. It's so important to always share something, impart some knowledge, and teach something. That will make your interviews more effective and it will help grow your brand! Scott has an incredibly busy schedule and busy life. Riley helped Scott right away by recommending that he start tracking all his interviews. Scott has over 50 interviews in his Interview Connections package, so organization is key. Scott encourages everyone listening to track their podcast interviews!  He also recommends preparing for an interview 24 hours in advance and keeping it topical. For Scott, education is key to being the best expert he can be. Before going on a podcast, Scott always listens to who is going to be interviewing him. He listens to the show and gets a sense of their style. The more natural the interview, the better it is. It may seem obvious, but Scott always thanks the person who interviewed him! He likes to write a little thank you note, and point out something specific and positive about the experience.  Hosting a podcast isn't easy work, and a host will appreciate it! Scott also always shares and promotes the podcast episodes he's been on. It's not just about you, sharing your interviews is also about thanking the host and building a foundation with them. Scott also reminds listeners to make sure that they have decent quality equipment before their podcast interview. Don't show up unprepared. About half of the podcasts Scott does are video, he's always ready to potentially be on video. He reminds us that if you fumble on the technical side, you lose your focus. You want to focus on the interview! Scott also keeps a physical checklist of everything he needs for the interview. This helps to frame things, and makes him a better guest.  Riley asks if Scott can speak to the importance of improvisation and staying on your feet as a podcast guest.  This skill is fundamental, explains Scott. He stresses the importance of being able to read the audience. To be a great podcast guest, you have to know your audience and have the flexibility to pivot if necessary. Put yourself in their shoes!  Scott reminds us that a podcast host is giving you an opportunity to speak and share your expertise. They're giving you the power of the mic, and you should be gracious. Thank them for the privilege that you're there! He also recommends that if you don't know the answer to a question, don't try to fake it. That breaks down your credibility and hurts the podcast. Stay true to yourself and do the research!   A fascinating effect that Scott has noticed is the more podcasts you do, the more opportunities you have. As he's been doing dozens of podcast interviews, Scott has now received opportunities for radio, speaking, conferences, TV, and more. Scott really believes in the service mindset of a podcast guest. For Scott, the more you do for other people, the more it comes back indirectly. Whatever you give away will come back to you twofold. Put yourself out there, you don't know what's going to happen! You can find Scott at his website, scottschober.com, and on his podcast, What Keeps You Up at Night!

In today’s episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join me and my guest, Scott Shute, as we talk about what happiness and compassion are, the redefinition of success, and the importance of mindfulness in gaining insight into the body and mind. For Scott, compassion has proven to go a long way not only for people – but also for corporate structures. Just as much as he believes that success grows not only within matters of work and career, he believes that a successful company not only heed its shareholders but its stakeholders as well. As LinkedIn’s Head of Mindfulness and Compassion, allow your mind to open as Scott breaks down how compassion is an awareness of others, having the mindset of wishing the best for them, the courage to take action, and many more.Next Lesson: HappinessIn this episode, Scott explains to the listeners how happiness isn’t always all about what happens, as opposed to what others believe. Happiness is in the reaction – for Scott. Let’s take, for example, good and bad days. If you keep close notice, there are days where you wake up, and you absolutely just feel like a winner. That no matter what goes on, you’ll face it all. And then there are days wherein you feel heavy, and down that, you can’t even get out of bed so much so that it confuses you. For Scott, the difference goes back to what happens inside your head. In a striking statement, Scott speaks: “happiness is an inside job!” Often, we are all aware of what that happiness means to us. Imagine how at times, through conversations, our bodies naturally react to what we talk about. When we talk about something that makes us nervous, our bodies tense, jitters, and grows cold. While if we talk about topics that we are passionate about, the body fills with energy, we talk faster, and the ideas come rushing naturally. Using this example tells of a strong message that Scott agrees with. Our body knows what can make it happy. And by learning that, meditating on that, and shaping your life into more of those things that make you feel good –you gain more view into what happiness truly means to you.Outline of the episode:[03:20] What does it mean to change your world from the inside out?[05:13] Four parts to learning optimism and happiness.[08:12] On finding contentment despite suppression and hurt.[12:22] How can we discover what is important to us?[15:56] A successful company is…[20:45] Where does genuine compassion start?[24:55] Compassion as a strategic advantage.[29:26] Success can also happen outside of work.[33:06] The journey of becoming LinkedIn’s Head of Mindfulness and Compassion.[36:01] Find the environment that cultivates you fully! In the latest episode of our Stargate Universe Rewatch Podcast, we take a look at the first season episode "Life". This is very much a character-driven episode. We explore elements of character with Scott and Camille as they return to earth via the communication stones. The conflict between Young and Telford intensifies, and Rush makes a startling discovery. That's right, the chair device makes its first appearance in Stargate Universe. This episode is of note because it features no great threat to the crew. In fact, the lack of any great danger is what finally gives the crew time to reflect on their situation. And that causes its own problems. ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of The Stars And I am a nerd.   This is episode 58 of the podcast.   Today, we’re talking about the Stargate Universe episode “Life”   But before we do, I want to acknowledge the tragic passing of Cliff Simon, who played the Goa’uld System Lord Ba’al in Stargate SG-1. From my perspective, this was just announced yesterday, but you won’t be listening to this until the 19th of April, just over a month away.   He died in a kiteboarding accident. In addition to being an actor, he was also quite an athlete. He was only 58 years old.   My heart goes out to his wife, his family, all those who loved him.   Today’s episode of Stargate is called “Life.”   The description on gateworld reads Lt. Scott and Camille visit their loved ones using the communication stones, leading Colonel Young to a discovery about Telford's activities. On the Destiny, Rush discovers technology he believes may be able to get them home.   The episode was WRITTEN BY: Carl Binder It was DIRECTED BY: Alex Chapple And it first aired on the 20th of November 2009   The episode opens with an unconventional choice of music for a sci-fi show. It’s a country-kinda sounding tune. The line that clearly stands out in the lyrics is “It’s been the worst day since yesterday.” That’s kinda thematic to the episode, and the show as a whole. This song is by a band named Flogging Molly.   The characters are starting to come to terms with the fact that this is their life now. They’re on this ship and they’re not leaving any time soon. This is how it’s gonna be. It’s not what any of them wanted (except maybe Rush) but they can’t change it . They just have to try to find a way to get through each day. To find the positives. To make a life for themselves.   So we’re starting to see activities taking place. A bunch of them are exercising together, while Chloe exercises alone.   And then, of course, there are those who have managed to hook up with someone. You can have a relationship with somebody no matter where you are. That actually reminds me of Tom and B'elanna in Star Trek Voyager. They found happiness. They were married and even had a child. In late season 7, Harry asks Tom “Don’t you want to get home?” And Tom replies “I am home, Harry.” These Doctor Park and Greer are not at that stage. She seems to just be using the activity as a stress-relief, although I think it means more to Greer. But I can definitely see how building a more committed relationship and family would change your perspective on the place where you are.   Spencer is in his quarters. I don’t think he’s still confined. He’s taking the last tablet of some kind of medication. Not sure what it is, but I imagine it’s important. Let’s hope he doesn’t rely on it to stay alive for his sake.   Telford is still obsessed with stone duty, so that he can get back on board Destiny, but when O’Neill orders him to take a break, he calls up Young’s wife. They’re having dinner together, but it seems he’s being himself at the moment, not pretending to be Young.   He says he feels an obligation to tell her something about her husband. Young wants everybody on the ship in shape. And that makes sense. They don’t know what dangers they’ll face in the future. Physical fitness isn’t everything, but if you’ve got it, it’s one less disadvantage you have in a situation.   Eli isn’t overly keen to take part. IT seems he’s less enthusiastic about losing weight than the actor who plays him.   Young also wants TJ to do psych evaluations on everybody on board. And again, that makes very good sense. With all the stress they’re under, the hardship of being stranded so far from home, nobody is going to be in peak mental health. Some could be really struggling. Spencer seems to be one of them. Perhaps the pills he was taking were antidepressants or sleeping pills.   Rush has opened a new section of the ship and is exploring it. Eli can’t help him explore because working on a secret mission for Young. Rush is amused by this. From his perspective, Eli isn’t military, and therefore doesn’t have to do what Young tells him. Eli still sees Young as the leader of this community. The question of who is running this ship, and who should be, will come up again. We’re building toward something.   Anyway, the mission Eli is doing is research to see if there is any hope that Telford’s plan to get Destiny home might work. So far nothing.   Rush and Greer make a significant discovery. It’s a chair. Looks like a dentist chair, but if you are at all familiar with SG1 or Atlantis, you’ll recognise it as an ancient control chair. Back on Earth and on Atlantis, the ancients created these chairs to operate a very powerful weapon that fired drones. These drones can rip through a Goa'uld or Wraith ship like it’s paper. But only somebody with the ancient gene can use it. The ancients all carried this gene, and a few modern day humans carry it as well. It was a security feature so the weapons couldn’t be used by their enemies.   Doctor Carson Beckett developed a gene-therapy that could give this gene to any human.   But with a little research, Rush believes this chair is actually closer to the ancient repository of knowledge that got downloaded into Jack’s mind back in The Fifth Race. He calls it a neural interface. This is a precursor to the device SG-1 found. Within the knowledge contained in this chair could be the master code for this ship’s systems.   Young immediately recognises the danger the chair represents. The ancient repository almost killed Jack. It would have if he hadn’t found his way to the Asgard galaxy so they could remove the knowledge.Rush can study the chair, but nobody sits in it.   Rush thinks the effects will likely be less severe. The only way to know for certain is if somebody sits in it. Of course, he’s not willing to volunteer to do it himself. Because he’s Rush. He’s too important in his own mind. This should be no surprise to anyone who knows Rush. He’s a coward at heart, but is perfectly happy for other people to risk themselves on his behalf. It is probably his worst quality.   Greer is almost ready to sit in it now if there’s a chance it’ll help them find a way home. But Young is adamant. Rush needs to prove it can be used safely, and that it can do something useful to them.   This chair will be an important element in the ongoing story so it’s pretty exciting to see its first appearance.   Lieutenant Scottt and Camille Wray are both using the stones to visit their families. This is the one break that the crew get from the drudgery of life on the ship. Well, that and exploratory missions through the gate.   Telford is back on duty again because Scott has swapped bodies with him. He’s eager for some of Eli’s test results. He has people back on earth that want to help with the plan. But Young doesn’t trust Telford any more than he trusts Rush.   Camille has a quick debrief with her IOA superior before heading home. She explains how Rush and Young are at odds, but right now Young seems to be winning. He has control of the ship and crew. She’s stuck between them and not sure which is the better camp to join. Her superior makes an interesting suggestion. Why don’t you start your own camp?   Again, this is sowing the seed of something interesting to come. This episode is doing quite a lot of set-up for the future, which is really cool.   Scott has received an unexpected letter. Remember back in the pilot, the flashback of a teenage Scott confessing his sins to the priest that raised him. He’d gotten a girl pregnant and she wasn’t planning to keep the baby. Well, she’s made contact with him, but she doesn’t have clearance to know about the Stargate program, so he has to use a cover story.   Camille on the other hand, has gone home to see her partner Sharon, who apparently has just been told about it all. She’s skeptical at first, but Camille speaks to her in, what I assume is mandarin, asking if she’s thrown out the ugly chair yet. I’m not sure the exact rules they use to determine who can have clearance, but it makes sense that somebody’s next of kin would be informed, whereas an acquaintance from a long time ago would not.   Every now and then we cut back to TJ doing psych evaluations on the crew. Like the kino interviews back in Darkness and Light, these scenes give us little flashes of insight into the various characters. Of course Rush isn’t willing to participate. Greer seems to have a real sore-spot where it comes to his father. This will be explored deeper in a later episode. Again, nice foreshadowing.   Brody thinks somebody should be allowed to sit in the chair if they volunteer. Franklin thinks it’s politics. Young is resisting at first, so if the chair works, he gets the credit, but if it fails, Rush gets the blame. Brody and Franklin seem to be feeling a bit of kinship with Rush at the moment. All scientists together against the overbearing military colonel. There’s a lot more subtle foreshadowing of things to come happening here than I remembered from previous viewings.   Camille is enjoying the simple missing pleasures of life, such as a hot water shower, and catching up with Sharon, enjoying time together. She makes the interesting observation that food doesn’t taste quite right in someone else’s body. She has an emotional moment when she realises that she’s forgotten the rowboat in a picture that hangs on their wall. She’s been trying to recreate the image back on Destiny, but she’d completely forgotten the rowboat. This is a very uncomfortable reminder of just how far she is from home most of the time, and it causes her to break down. It’s a pretty moving scene.   When it’s time for Camilla to go back, Sharon has some encouraging words for her, and promises she’ll be here waiting when she makes it back to earth. But when Camille leaves, all the bravado drops. I think the big theme here is that life may be hard for those stranded on the Destiny, but it’s also hard for their loved ones back on earth.   Originally, Camille wasn’t going to see her parents. They don’t have clearance, so what’s the point. In the end, at Sharon’s suggestion, she visits them briefly and tells them Camille is okay. At least she gets to see them.   Meanwhile Scott has found a child, all alone, at his old girlfriend,  Annie’s house. It’s been hours and no sign of Annie. Scott’s military chaperone is ready to call child services. Then finally, she arrives home. Scott pretends to be Telford. He tells Annie that Scott is away on a mission. She invites him in. And then he hears her call her son Matthew. She confirms that the boy is Scott’s son. She couldn’t end the pregnancy.  This must be a moment full of many conflicting emotions for Scott. I mean, I remember the moments when my wife told me she was pregnant. It was a huge mis of excitement, anticipation, and fear. For Scott, there’s the added complications of relief, that she kept their son, but also anger, that she didn’t tell him he was a father. It’s the anger that finds expression. And Annie is understandably taken aback. “Why didn’t you tell him?” He demands. Not the way a co-worker would usually react.   But they get talking. It turns out life as a single mum is pretty hard for Annie, especially since her own mother died. She works as a dancer, and by that, I assume she means stripper. Scott is horrified. Annie had planned to go to college and become a lawyer. But those dreams never happened.    So Scott organises to have her financially supported so she can quit her job and go to college. But she says she’s happy with her job. She doesn’t see herself as a lawyer anymore. This is really hard for Scott to hear. He wants to save her from the life she’s living, of course he does. But I guess she doesn’t want that help. She’d be glad to receive some financial assistance, but I guess she feels it’s not Scott’s place to come in and dictate what she should be doing with her life after all this time.   Rush has made a discovery in the computer. He’s managed to contact one of the seed ships that went ahead of Destiny to place stargates on planets. He now has information on thousands of stargates out there. One in particular is interesting. It’s a planet with naturally occurring naquadrian. Apparently that’s what made icarus base able to generate enough power to dial the 9-chevron address. Naquadrian is a rare mineral, even more powerful than naquada, which the stargates are made out of. It’s very very rare. There’s only one other planet in the universe known to have had naquadrian at one time. Jonas Quin’s planet. Of course, there are problems. The planet is a year away, and they’ll need to learn how to steer the ship and take the ship into orbit. Not to mention, how to use the mineral to dial the gate.   I think it’s pretty obvious that Rush has been looking for just this. Not this specifically, but something he can use as leverage to convince Young to let someone sit in the chair.  This is a strong case, but it’s not enough to convince Young. He says the chair is still off-limits and Rush has a year to figure out the master code for the ship.   Young wins another round.   Most people react to the news positively. There’s a way home, even if it is a year away. But Spencer freaks out. He can’t manage a whole nother year. He nearly kills Brody when they collide in the hallway. Things are not looking good for that guy.   Scott has a dream of sitting and talking with Young’s wife. He knows it's her because he met her once. Young theorises it’s a residual memory from Telford. There’s no proof, of course, but Young now suspects that Telford is hanging out with his wife. Young takes the next opportunity to use the stones and follow Telford to his house to confront him. His wife claims Telford never pretended to be Young, and that they never slept together. That may be true. Unless he only told her who he really was some of the time. She says he’s a friend supporting her through all this weirdness. You’ve got to admit, though, it’s a little weird. Telford’s biggest crime here seems to be that he’s told Young’s wife that Young is still involved with TJ, which is a lie. While I don’t doubt the wife here, I have no illusions that Telford’s motives are pure in any way.   Some of Stargate Universe’s detractors have said the show spent too much time focusing on character drama instead of science fiction. I don’t feel that way, I never have. I appreciate all the character stuff the show puts into episodes like this, and SGU is very much a science fiction show in the truest sense of the word,  but I do have to admit that this particular storyline is getting a little soap-opera-ish. None of these three are behaving like mature adults.   And now the truth comes out. Rush lied. The whole thing about an icarus type planet was fake. He planted it in the computer. It was all a ploy to get someone in the chair.   Rush justifies it as a way to give people hope, but we all know the reason he did it. Eventually, Young tells Rush, if you want to go sit in that chair yourself be my guest. And Rush shows his true colours. He’s not willing to risk it on himself. He wants to risk somebody else. As Young says, “That’s what I thought.”   The episode closes out with a repeat of that same song from the beginning. It’s been the worst day since yesterday.   After everything, they’re all still in that same situation. Nothing has gotten better. There’s been new heartaches, but also a few glimmers of hope, such as the plant that one of them has finally managed to get to germinate. In the end, they still just have to pick themselves up each morning and carry on.   This episode has a bit of a depressing tone. But that doesn’t bother me. It’s a day in the life kind of episode for the characters on this ship, and right now, life is pretty hard for all of them. They’ll have good days and bad days, but lately, there’s been a lot of bad ones. But there is still hope. There is always hope. Next time, we’ll be looking at the episode Justice. Things are really starting to heat up with the arc of season 1 at this point. Some of the things that were set up in life are going to pay off in a big way next time. Especially in regards to the Rush / Young relationship. I look forward to talking about it.   Please consider leaving a review wherever you listen to podcasts, and spread the world about Nerd Heaven to anyone you think might enjoy it.   Have a great two weeks, and I’ll see you next time. Franklin High School has a rich history in the emerald city of Seattle. Great alumni such as Dr. Bill Hutchinson, who founded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center named after his brother Fred, a former MLB player and coach. Grammy award-winning Jazz musician Kenny G. Sports icons such as MLB hall of farmer Ron Santo, Mario Bailey, Corey Dillon, Terry Metcalf, and so many others. There's a rich history of greatness at Franklin High School. The greatness that Athletic Director Scott Griggs is constantly reminded of as he walks the halls and sees the banners on the walls or the alumni bricks laying on the floors. He embraces this history as he helps lay down his own foundation for future generations. Scott discusses his midwest upbringings and how they led him to Seattle, the diversity of his school as roughly 92% of his student enrollment are minorities, or as I like to say majorities, and the importance of open dialogue with students in today's climate. The foundation that is being laid now by his new football coach Terry Green and a promise of stability at that position that seems to have had a revolving door for the past decade. The importance of diversity and community is at the forefront of our discussion. A great example of that is his basketball coach and more importantly good friend Craig Jackson. Craig has been named Director of Diversity to WIBCA (Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association) a position that will give him a chance to help guide Washington state basketball programs to support student-athletes' constantly changing challenges. Franklin High School, a school with a long storied history. For Scott, he's looking to write his own chapter in this illustrious story.

Do you feel like you are working with tunnel vision? Are you only focusing on one small aspect of the agency? Are you wondering which direction to take your agency? Do you spend too much time on the wrong projects? Time moves quickly in the agency world, and success often rides on your agency continually evolving; otherwise, it could die. In this episode, we'll cover: 3 benefits of surrounding yourself within a niche. Finding passion in your niche. Why staying the same is an agency's kiss of death. I spoke with Scott Addison Clay, the Founder, and CEO of Addison Interactive, a digital marketing agency that works with the entertainment industry. The 10-year-old agency is the culmination of a number of Scott's passions. However, along the way to finding these passions, Scott built the interactive department at another agency from two people to thirty. He's here to offer some tips on how to evolve your agency from a job into a passion. 3 Benefits of Surrounding Yourself Within a Niche Building a team from two people to thirty in a relatively short period of time seems like a difficult feat. How do you create the need to grow so fast? Scott says one of the biggest reasons the agency grew so quickly was because they were in a building full of others in the entertainment industry. Surrounding yourself with others in your niche provides benefits such as: A professional network that can increase opportunities and help get the word out about your agency. Fresh ideas that can prevent you from getting tunnel vision during a project. Resources and knowledge that can help you provide a new service for your clients. Finding Passion in Your Niche Many years ago, a news producer gave Scott a piece of advice he has always remembered: Pick something -- anything -- and just do that thing. However, passion is not simply about having a goal. It is also about the journey you take to get to the goal. For Scott, passion evolved from a love of entertainment and a curiosity about how things work. From there, he went to building an agency that started with website building and evolved to offering services like video editing and social media content for the entertainment industry. While it is important to choose a niche reflecting your passion, it's also important to remember chasing those passions is often a long-term commitment. It usually involves doing jobs you're not crazy about in order to grow your agency. Why Staying the Same Is an Agency's Kiss of Death When Scott started Addison Interactive a decade ago, his first projects involved building websites. Then he started learning to do content for Tumblr. "We just kept figuring things out and then staffing for those things." In order to grow your agency, Scott says, you have to always be evolving. This is particularly true with digital marketing, where technology and trends are changing rapidly. Evolution includes a lot of listening, both to clients about what they need as well as experts in the industry you serve. It also includes the ability and willingness to adapt. "The kiss of death is saying, 'We've always done it that way,'" Scott explains. Through the Agency Playbook, Scott learned being open to possibilities and expanding involves not just asking the question: What do you want to do? It also involves asking yourself what you don't want to do. While there are many reasons for this, perhaps the best reason of all is the point where Scott now is. It's the point where you can start turning down small jobs you don't want because they don't fit into your goals. Looking for a Content Creation Solution? The pandemic changed the way we did a lot of things.  For Scott and Melissa have traveled the world, but never considered RV ownership.  In June of 2020, being unable to fly to get their son across the country, they took the 36 hour road trip and saw nothing but RVs.  That's when it hit them that maybe this is what they should be doing.  They can travel, and still enjoy the outdoors, but still be safe and adventurous.  After getting back from the trip and watching YouTube videos, Scott and Melissa went out to a RV dealership and bought the first class C on the lot.  As a couple that have never really been camping or known to make impulsive purchases, they talk about their thought process and decision making.  We talk to them about why they chose the RV they did, what they like and what they may be looking for different.  If you are considering the RV lifestyle, this is the perfect introduction to some of the basics of ownership. In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have an amazing guest Scott Omelianuk who shares insights and wisdom about content consumption habits, amazing business stories that impacted the community during this crisis, and tips on how to adapt and thrive in this current landscape! Scott Omelianuk is an entrepreneur, entrepreneurship and marketing lecturer, media and brand builder, consumer connector, brand Lead of the premiere voice of America's entrepreneurs, owners and business builders via Inc.com, Inc. Magazine (Editor-in-Chief), the Inc 5000, the Inc., and more. His responsibilities include developing new lines of business to serve the entrepreneurial community and overseeing the events and content that makeup the Inc. ecosystem. He achieves remarkable honors as named to the Ad Age A-list, received Ad Age’s Media Vanguard award for implementing the first user generated content in national media, and for pioneering QR codes, digital video, AR, content marketing, and building a juggernaut lead generation business. Also, brokered corporate partnerships, now worth billions. Just like what most of the businesses do during this world crisis, Scott’s team also did remote work. They’ve struggled at first as doing events is a big part of their business. But they embraced the situation and figured out how to produce products remotely, and makeup revenue. This challenging year left Scott optimistic. Despite all the conflict, he is still quite positive about human nature in general. He suggests that businesses should be innovating to not be left behind and never be obsolete. Therefore, business owners should change their business over time, and adapt to the new trend just like what the Inc. company did that primarily supports entrepreneurship. Relative to this, make time to tease apart your revenue to make sure you’re always planning for the future so that you don’t end up in the swamp. Listening to, and intuitive understanding of your customers, clients, consumers, and the community is key. Also, engaging with them empathetically is an important thing. For Scott, it’s not just about making money, it’s about carving time out to have a relationship with your time, carving time out for yourself. Most importantly, make sure you don’t sacrifice your family for your business to avoid regrets in the end!   Some Questions I Ask: Give us a recap of what did you guys see that shocked you in 2020, and how it impacted Inc in general or everybody in your ecosystem, and how did you guys pivot in the storm? (01:03) What’s your outlook on some of those businesses that are dying away because they didn’t adapt to the current landscape? (03:28) What are some of the things that you’re excited about or paying attention to that you guys are excited to be covering and trying to get out to the masses through your platform? (06:47) When you guys are looking to add value to your viewers and your readers, how do you guys go about curating content? (11:24) How can someone audit how relevant or obsolete they are becoming, and how somebody can learn from your guy's journey in terms of maybe their own business journey to continue to innovate and grow to achieve the goal and serve?  (14:13) What are some of the trends or maybe skill sets or ideologies that you think the savvy and sharp business owners are adapting to those storms to survive? (19:17) What are some of the things that you think business owners should be aware of? What kind of your guy's rhythm looks like in terms of planning, and what you’re seeing other businesses do? (28:19) If there was one thing that you were to leave to our audience that you feel would serve them on their journey of not only just building wealth in their business but living like a millionaire in all areas of their life, what would you leave them with?  (33:51)  In This Episode, You Will Learn: Option to left up small businesses and to avoid dying away (05:42) Remarkable stories that show up during this pandemic (07:32) The Best in Business Awards – recognizing the impact of different businesses (23:03) Quotes: “When business starts acting that way where purpose becomes as important as profit, I think that can be incredibly powerful.” “Your company is who you are, and your purpose for existence.” “Somehow you have to tease apart your revenue to make sure you’re always planning for the future.” “It’s not just about making money, it’s about carving time out to have a relationship with your time, carving time out for yourself.”  Connect with Scott Omelianuk on: The Inc. 5000 2020 Awards The Best in Business 2020 Awards Inc. This week, Avram Piltch discusses some of the most influential technology of the past decade. While some products produce a short-term change to an industry, others have long-lasting effects. In the past decade, there have been several massive moves that will likely never be reverted. One of the most influential products of the decade was the AMD Ryzen 1800X processor. The product stood head and shoulders above what Intel was producing and, in grand AMD fashion, was far less expensive than what Intel was offering. The processor offered 8 cores and 16 threads, as opposed to the common 4 core processor being offered by Intel. It also ushered in the architecture that made it possible for AMD to produce the first 7nm chips, something that Intel still has not accomplished.Another influential product in the 2010s, especially for Avram, has been the Raspberry Pi. This single-board computer has changed the way we think about computing. It also changed the way we think about what a computer can be, and what it is capable of doing. For so long, a computer was thought to be a larger, more powerful system that could do anything. With the Raspberry Pi, we can now think about a computer as a single-purpose device, whether that be to power a robot or a security camera. It also helped evolve the craft community into the maker movement. For Scott, however, one of the most influential technologies of the decade has been virtualization. Without it, there would be no Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud. There would be no Project xCloud or Google Stadia. More importantly, there would be no blossoming startup community. The ability to create virtual networks in Azure and the like and scale them up and down at will, without having to purchase hardware, lease physical space to store them, provide power and internet, etc. And, none of it is a capital expense. Awesome.

“Good and fast are not the same thing."Scott FaubleFor the vast majority of us, besting our 26.2 personal record by 3+ minutes would be considered fine. Something to be celebrated, but hardly a mind-bending breakthrough. At the highest level of distance running however, the distinction is vast. It's the canyon that separates a very good marathon runner from the greats. This is the story of Scott Fauble.Historically a very accomplished cross country & 10K runner (at the 2016 Olympic Trials he finished 4th in the 10,000 meters), Scott was unproven at the marathon. That is, until he ran 2:12 in Frankfurt in 2017 and matched that time the following year in New York. These performances certainly established Scott as a very good marathoner. But nobody, aside from Scott himself and perhaps his coach and close circle, was prepared for his stunning performance at the 2019 Boston Marathon. Not only did he surprise the world by leading the race for extended stretches, he accomplished what is almost unheard of at his level -- besting his marathon PR by almost 3 and a half minutes to complete the course in 2:09:09 as the top American and 7th overall. It was a performance that foisted him into the mainstream spotlight. Anointed him as the leading American going into the 2020 Olympic men's marathon. And established him as one of the world’s very best at the 26.2 discipline.Just as interesting are Faub's pursuits when the running shoes come off. Alongside coach Ben Rosario he penned Inside a Marathon: An All-Access Pass to a Top-10 Finish at NYC. Documenting the entire four-month journey to Scott’s 7th place finish at the 2018 New York City Marathon, it's a rare, candid (and very funny at times) behind-the-scenes look at the life of a professional marathoner. A chronicle of grit and mental fortitude, it's a must read book for anyone committed to mastery.Unusual among top professional endurance athletes, yet simpatico with his fidelity to extreme transparency, Scott logs every training session on Strava (check out the file from Boston). In another riveting episode, Scott Kupor, the managing partner of one of the highest-profile VC on the planet over the last decade, Andreessen Horowitz, joins us today to discuss startups, how to get funded and a lot more! He is also the author of the book called Secrets of Sand Hill Road: Venture Capital and How to Get It. “Inside Baseball” Scott addressed the common issue of "inside baseball" between entrepreneurs and VCs. He shares that there is no reason why questions shouldn’t be answered and that VCs should reach out to entrepreneurs. “People don’t understand why decisions are made. I think that just leads to mistrust quite frankly between VCs and entrepreneurs.” - Scott Kupor Moreover, Scott shares the reason why he wrote the book. He wanted to bridge the gap between VCs and entrepreneurs. Through this book, he answers several entrepreneur questions that previously were assumed to be understood, since they have done a lot of deals in the past.  Information Asymmetry Scott discusses the idea about information asymmetry and how it results to one party benefitting at the expense of the other in those types of scenarios. “Capital is scarce and VCs have it. There was definitely a very different balance of power between entrepreneurs and VCs. There’s probably less incentive quite frankly for the VC. The biggest change, I think,  in the last 10 yrs is, its as competitive as its ever been.” - Scott Kupor  Money clearly a commodity in this business. For Scott, if VCs and entrepreneurs can level the playing field, he would enter into a relationship on a basis of actually understanding one another, knowing what motivates one another as it would definitely be a good place better place to start. More From Scott Aside from talking about Silicon Valley, Startups and how entrepreneurs could get funding, he shares his thoughts on the overall VC backed industry.  “My personal view is—I’ve talked about this with people in DC publicly—the idea that more and more growth is happening in the private markets, while beneficial, selfishly for people like me, who get to, kind of monetize that growth. I don’t think its good for the country. I don’t think its good to not have companies going public at a reasonable stage where a broader cross-section of public market investors can actually enjoy the appreciation there.” - Scott Kupor To hear more about Secrets of Sand Hill Road Venture Capital and more information about Scott Kupor, Managing Partner at Andreessen Horowitz, download and listen to the episode. 140: Dominating Dallas-Fort Worth

Real Estate Investing Live

Scott Orbon joins Brian on the show to talk about several facets of real estate. He is an investor doing a ton of deal volume in the Dallas Fort-Worth area. In this episode, he talks about operations in his real estate business, as well as the mastermind he started with his partner. The discuss scaling, systems, and the importance of fostering relationships to take you further in real estate.   Key Takeaways:   [1:45] Scott has been in real estate for nearly nine years. He started in fix-and-flips but has since moved exclusively to wholesaling. He also started a mastermind, Multipliers, with his business partner, Chris, three years ago. [3:00] Scott and his team do about 150 deals per year. The DFW market is one of the more competitive markets: more sellers, more competitive, higher marketing costs, etc. [4:45] Their team is made up of about 13 people and in order to scale, they adopted the traction philosophy. They have an integrator who makes decisions, acquisition managers, an inspector, a lead manager, a disposition manager, closing managers, and a few calling assistants. He and his partner handle the marketing but have removed themselves from most of the day-to-day. [6:30] In traction, you have a visionary and an integrator. Both Scott and Chris are visionaries, so they brought in an integrator. You are only as good as your systems. For an integrator to be successful, the right tools and departments need to be set up. For smaller teams, an integrator may not be realistic, but you should have someone who is head of operations. [9:50] The people who are most profitable right now are the two- to five-people-teams doing fix-and-flips and wholesale. When you treat your business truly like a business, you need to focus on three things: structure, roles, and responsibilities. It’s hard to scale when you’re doing everything yourself. [12:00] Change is inevitable in business. In his market, Scott has to constantly evaluate his business and make changes. You have to figure out what pivot is right for you and your business. It can be a little bit more difficult for larger groups to pivot. [15:05] Scott and Chris started their mastermind because they saw the value in being surrounded by great people who are ahead of you and can support you. Relationships get you further and faster, and masterminds help foster quality relationships. For Scott and Chris, Multipliers is a passion project. It’s about getting like-minded people together, exchanging ideas, going deep personally, and holding each other accountable. [18:00] It is the age of the mastermind in today’s real estate climate. There’s more information available for free today than there was even five years ago. People in real estate are generous in sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly. Every mastermind is great, and they all have something different to offer. One thing they all have in common is relationships. If you can cultivate a few deep relationships, those are the ones that really count. [22:15] Things like masterminds, coaching, and live events are an opportunity to connect with people and content that will take you further. The information is great, but people remember the relationships. Real estate is an absolute relationship game. [24:45] When seeking out these opportunities, it’s important to put yourself in a strategic environment to flourish. How can you put yourself in an environment to get challenged? [26:40] For people who are just starting in real estate, get around people, listen to podcasts, and really take it in. Once you’re more seasoned, get some coaching or get into a group, even if it means investing money in yourself. [28:35] Be intentional about the environment you put yourself in. To figure out what is the right thing for you, do your due diligence. Think about what you need at this time, and ask questions to see what’s out there. [30:25] The Multipliers Mastermind is about relationships that stay intact. One thing that makes their mastermind different from others is that they cultivate depth rather than width. The people in their mastermind truly have each other’s backs. [33:40] In some instances, your network translates into net worth. When you connect with someone who can understand your business challenges and finances, the information flow is spectacular. In today’s age of technology, relationships don’t have to be in the same location. You can create networks across the country. [36:15] For more information about the Multipliers Mastermind, follow the link below to reach out to Scott and find out what they have to offer and how you can get involved.   Mentioned in This Episode:   Meetings Daily REIA Show REI Facebook Page Brian’s Book The Multipliers Mastermind Scott’s Facebook Episode 137 with Jamil Damji Episode 139 with Steven Cavanaugh

Is a peaceful heart and peaceful mind possible in this wacky world? I’m waxing philosophical today. I hope you find this podcast educational and entertaining at the very least. As always, I want to take a minute and say welcome to all the new listeners and welcome back to veteran homestead-loving regulars who stop by the FarmCast every week. I truly appreciate you all so much. Today’s Show Homestead Life Updates Peaceful Heart – Peaceful Mind Parmesan Peas Homestead Life Updates Herd Shares – When you purchase part of our herd you will benefit from fresh milk and yogurt in the summer with cheese and butter available year-round. Your cows graze each and every day on lush green pasture and freshly baled hay in the winter. They live a life a peace and tranquility in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Plan a trip to the farm to visit them and see how we care for and manage them. Go to www.peacefulheartfarm.com/virginia-herd-shares for more information. We have only three lambs this year. Speak up now and claim a half or a whole or forever hold your peace. Well at least until next year.   Same with the beef. This may be your last chance for beef raise on our homestead. We are streamlining our cattle operation to be strictly dairy. In the future, you’ll have to purchase a young calf and raise it up for beef on your own. Choices, choices, choices. We are constantly faced with hard choices these days. Should we get more Jersey cows or stick with the Normandes? New opportunities seem to continually present themselves. I’m leaning more towards sticking with the Normandes. Sure, Butter, the Jersey, is giving more milk, but we can breed for higher milk production. It is the temperament of the Normande that is so compelling. And the dual milk/beef characteristics. We have the option of selling every single calf we birth on the farm. But we can also keep one as needed for our own use as beef. Normande beef is superb. Yeah, I’m leaning toward keeping the Normandes central and the two Jersey girls will be the cream on top. (That’s a dairy pun.) Corny, I know. Choices again. As we move forward at the farmer’s market, the interest in lamb is increasing. That’s another dilemma. I only have so much time in a day. At this point, my days are consumed with milking, making cheese and marketing milk and cheese. Scott and I have discussed significantly reducing the other animal populations. Specifically, the goats and sheep. It’s another task in my already overcrowded schedule to market those specialty meats. Who knew we would be faced with these kinds of choices? We love all of our animals. However, I have 10 lambs to sell next year. Will I have the time to do it effectively? Or will we fall into the trap that so many other small farmers do? Will we end up selling them at a loss just to make room for more that get sold at a loss again? Not likely. We are aware of the dilemma and are addressing it. But there it is. The choice is always before us of what we do with our time. How much garden is the right amount of garden? If I don’t have a garden at all, then I must spend money at the market to make up the difference. Part of the choice of living the homestead life is the simplicity and living on less. It becomes like drinking water, a necessary part of your life. Else you go back to the rat race of spending the hours you currently use to garden with working for someone else. Nah, I think I’ll pass on that. Yeah, the garden will likely endure. Not much in the way of updates there. We continually have choices to make, but for right now we have Normande cows, goats, sheep, donkey’s and quail – and a very large garden and orchard. Those will remain as they are and we will power through. Oh yeah, we can’t forget the bees. But we do. They are going fine on their own. One day we will rob some honey. But not today. I’ll bet you guys have similar choices. Should you move to the country and build a homestead or create peace in your life right where you are and visit us every chance you get? Either will bring peace to your life. It’s always your choice is it not? Peaceful Heart – Peaceful Mind How does one get a peaceful heart? That’s a deep subject. I’ve worked on it for years and I continue to work on it. Maintaining peace, both inner and outer, is a full-time job – a lifetime job. There are techniques that help. Different choices can be made that will help. Self-discipline with your thoughts and mind helps. There are lots of things that can be done. Here at Peaceful Heart Farm, we are constantly reminded of the desire for peace because of our name. What you think about becomes your life. We think about peace a lot. Living in the environment we do helps also. But it is not required. Not everyone can live the life we do – or even desires to live as we do. Having peaceful surroundings is not a prerequisite for experiencing peace. I must say, for us, it certainly helps. Whenever you get tired of the rat race and just want to escape to the country, you might have to make plans, drive a certain distance, hope that it is as you remembered, and so on. For Scott and me it is a matter of waking up in the morning and going outside to do morning chores and we are immersed in it – for the most part. We have awakened to disasters – animals we love may be ill and die. We lost Dora earlier this year. That was not pleasant and it disturbed my peace. But we move on. Technique and Practice One technique that I believe helps more than any other is maintaining a positive attitude. Looking on the bright side is another way to put it. I know it sounds trite and it is. The reason it is trite is it is ancient wisdom that works remarkably well. The idea has been passed down through the ages. Maintaining a positive attitude has endured because it works. With practice, it becomes more and more a daily routine. Something happens, you choose to the see the positive. I know, I know, it’s easy to get caught up in the negative. And truly there are some experiences that have no easily identifiable up-side. The loss of a loved one comes to mind. Sure, you can intellectually tell yourself over and over that they are in a better place. They are no longer in pain. The suffering is over and so on. But that does not take away the deep grief that grips your heart for quite a long time. But these are the exception to the rule. Most of our negative ideas about anything in our daily life are interpretations that we put on events. These interpretations are based on our beliefs, perception of the facts and past experiences. Yes. They are choices we are making. And you can get out of it. A key phrase I put in there is “perception of the facts”. Likely you believe that facts are facts. (And there is truth in that.) Yet there is so much that we accept as fact that in reality is based in false perceptions. Our senses can fool us but we believe them anyway. It can become a kind of mind-reading that we believe to be fact. We make our belief that something is true into absolute knowledge that something is true. Confirmation bias is the common way of identifying the resulting misinformation. Let’s say you are sure someone frowned at you because they don’t like you. Or you assume they are judging your weight, or your appearance, or your whatever. It is an illusion. One hundred percent of the time, it is an illusion. Truly, you have no idea what they think of you. In fact, they may not have even be truly aware of their surroundings and therefore are not thinking of you at all. Here’s an example. Many years ago, I was standing in line at a grocery store. At the young age of 20 something, I had very little self-awareness. My thoughts ran wild and I lived in my own little world, often completely unaware of those around me. Surrounded by people, I would be in my own bubble of thoughts, floating along like a bit of flotsam on a river. Rolling along merrily without a care in the world – or at least completely unaware of what I cared about. So, I’m in the grocery store checkout line and behind me a lady accidentally bumped into me. As a natural reaction, you would turn around, right? Just to see who it was. I turned around to look at her. I will never forget her reaction. She apologized profusely. Over and over she apologized. I frightened the bejesus out of her because of the look on my face. She said I looked so angry that she thought I was about to hit her. I apologized to her. To this day, I have no idea what I was thinking but it had absolutely nothing to do with her. Who knows what negative idea was roaming around in my head that day? Two things came to my awareness from that experience. Number one, I saw that I needed to pay attention to my thoughts and how I displayed them on my face. Open anger at the world displayed in an unconscious manner was not how I wanted to live my life. It was not how I wanted others to know me. And number two, I began to wonder how many times I had assumed I knew what someone was thinking based on the expression on their face as they looked at me – or looked in my direction. What if they were not even looking at me but at someone else, or simply staring blindly in my direction. What if I was the farthest thing from their thoughts? How many times had I judged myself based on an inaccurate perception? And today, I recognize how self-centered that idea actually is. In reality, the most normal thing in the world is for every person to be spending so much thought energy on worrying about what someone else thinks of them to even consider making a judgement about what to think of the person in their field of vision. One positive effect of that experience was that I purposefully trained myself to automatically smile at everyone I meet. It made an amazing difference in my life. I wanted to reflect to others that they are loved. No matter what they are thinking inside their very busy head. I wanted them to know that they are loved and that life is worth smiling about. Not everyone responds positively, but most do. Perhaps I made a small difference in their life. I can hope. Personal Responsibility and Judgement To make the transition to living a peaceful life, you have to stop thinking it’s somebody else’s fault. You have to stop thinking it is anyone else’s fault. There is no fault. Your life is a continuously playing video in your head. Whatever you think and believe shapes your reality. Think on something long enough and believe it hard enough and it becomes your reality. The good, the bad and the ugly. Take a care. The risks you take, the actions you perform, and your everyday experience of reality shape your life. If you spend your time judging everything negatively, your life will continually reflect that negativity back to you. Here’s an example. A small one. Let’s say you are having a wonderful day. You are optimistic. Life is going along as you planned and you are content and peaceful. Now you stub your toe. Not enough to break anything, but hard enough to make you yelp. Perhaps you will take a moment to sit down and examine the damage. No blood, but perhaps a bruise will arise later. In this circumstance, the pain will dissipate fairly rapidly. Now imagine you have that angry face that I just described. You are not even aware of the negativity that is boiling just under the surface. And you stub your toe in the same way. What is the result? Perhaps you start cursing to high heavens. Perhaps you scream loudly. You sit down and cradle your foot and begin to examine your toe. You howl and moan and curse because of the pain, your stupidity for not watching where you were going. Maybe someone left something in your path, you weren’t paying attention, and it caused you pain. But in your mind, it is the fault of the person who left it in your path. The pain, the wrath, the unhappiness, the negativity, the lack of peace can last a long time. Perhaps you feel a momentary jolt of happiness. Someone else did you wrong and that makes you right or righteous. But this is a very, very short-lived and fleeting experience. You may not even be aware of it, yet it is there. That brief experience – that split second of feeling good about yourself because you are better than someone else or they were wrong and you were right. Petty, egoic ideas that so often run wild in our minds. That guy is fat. Her dress is rumpled. This other person is really stupid and slow and so on. He or she is a loser. Who left that tricycle in the walkway right where someone might trip on it? The more you make these kinds of judgements, the more you are going to separate yourself, the less peace you will have. And yes. You will feel good for an instant, a split second, because you’ll feel good about yourself. You will think, “I’m better than that” or “I’m better than them.” But later you are going to feel lonely. Later you are going to continue to see negativity everywhere. Your world is constantly reflecting your own negativity about yourself back at you. It is a never-ending cycle until YOU change. Not the other person. YOU. Reality is neutral. Reality has no judgements. Reality simply is. To a tree or a chair or that door you stubbed your toe on, there is no concept of right or wrong. There is no good or bad. You are born. You embark on a journey of sensory experiences. There are lights, colors and sounds. And how you choose to interpret that is up to you. How you interpret them IS your life. You have that choice. Happiness is a Choice Peace and happiness are choices. Love is a choice. If you believe it’s a choice, then you can start working on it. You can affect your life. Life is peace because you choose to remain peaceful. Because reality is neutral, I can’t tell you how to find peace. It is your own conditionings, judgements and out of control thoughts that create the experience of unhappiness. You have to fix it for yourself. Start with believing it is possible. Just because you are miserable today, does not mean that you must be miserable for the rest of your life. Perhaps you have dreams that seem out of reach. You may believe you will never get what you want in life. Sure enough. You will never get what you want in life. Your life will continually reflect that negativity back to you. “See, I knew I would never get that job,” you say. While all the while you unconsciously presented yourself as a loser to the interviewer. After all, in order for you to fulfill your vision of negativity, the pieces must be in place. On the other hand, if you went to the interview with confidence (even if you were faking it), your chances of landing the job just improved 10-fold or a 100-fold. Let’s say you are looking for your dream property to live your idyllic life in the country. You have a specific budget in mind. There are specific activities you want to do on your homestead so infrastructure to support that ideal need to be in place. And then there are the optional things that you would like to have but they are not absolutely required. Once you have that idea in place, you set out on your journey to find the perfect place. You may look at fifty or a hundred or more properties. It’s easy to become discouraged. This one is the right price but no buildings. This one has buildings but they are not usable. The perfect one comes up and someone underbids you and steals it right out from under your nose. These things can lead to greater negativity and more feelings of “I’ll never get what I want.” The cards are stacked against me. And so on. But you have to believe it’s possible. For much of my life, I was miserable and now I’m happy. I’m content. For the most part, I’m peaceful. And it’s not just the homestead. I got most of the way there before moving here permanently. I think that on the outside, it didn’t look like it. There were so many challenges. Listen to my podcast “Our Virginia Life” where I talk about the crazy path we took to get here. Effecting Change How did I develop greater peace before the homestead? One thing was getting older. I just realized that life is short the time to live is now. Each step toward my ideal is where peace and happiness exist and nowhere else. I can see the future when I reflect, but I don’t focus there exclusively else I miss the wonder of today. Confucius has a great saying. “Every man has two lives and the second starts when he realizes he has just one.” It’s your unlimited desires that are clouding your peace and happiness. Have desires, of course. But be mindful of your life as it exists today. Marvel at it. Fill your mind with the wonder of this moment. Isn’t it truly amazing that you even made it this far? Change is gradual. It’s ongoing. It’s very personal. You have to decide it’s a priority. In everything that happens you can look at the bright side of things. Literally train yourself to think positively. There are always at least two ways you can see everything. As I mentioned earlier, there are some things that create acute suffering. Let’s put those aside for the moment and focus on every day experiences.  You have the ability to slowly work through every negative judgement that you have until you see the positive in it. As you practice, it becomes second nature to you. A Clear Mind. What’s That? What you want to have is a clear mind. You want to let go of thoughts. Here’s an idea that you may not have noticed. Happy thoughts disappear out of your head automatically. It’s very easy to let go of them. On the other hand, negative thoughts linger. They play themselves out over and over and over. Normal daily experiences will trigger them and the record starts playing again. Over and over and over. We don’t let go. When you develop the skill to interpret the positive in everything – and you learn to do it quickly, you let it go. You let it go quickly and easily and you are on to the next joyful and positive thought. How do you do that? The usual stuff you have likely heard throughout your life. Get out in the sun. Spend more time in nature. Learn to smile more. Learn to hug more. Create outward representations of happiness. These actions are feedback loops. You are literally choosing to experience happiness and your world reflects it. Reality still contains every single aspect of negativity also. All you have to do is look for it. Reality contains it all, but it is your mind that is judging it all. Watch your mind. Watch your mind all day long as often as you think of it. Do not judge it. Do not try to control it. This is literally what it means to meditate 24/7. Watch your own thoughts like you would watch anything else in the outside world. Ask yourself, “why am I having that thought?” “Does that serve me anymore?” “Is that conditioning from when I was 10 years old?” Beware of “why am I having that thought? Is there something wrong with me? Should I be thinking something else?” And so on. That’s not the same thing. That kind of thinking is a disease that keeps you from being happy. Let’s say your mind is just running and running, imagining what you are going to say to this person or that person when next you Meet. Perhaps you start rehearsing what you will say to that person – you may even rehearse speaking to them about how your mind is running on and on imagining what you are going to say to them. This is kind of thinking indicates a habitual thought pattern. You may think it is out of your control. It is not. This line of thinking comes from the desire to sound smart. Not the desire to be smart. The desire to sound smart whether you know what you are talking about or not. It is a skill that was perfected at an earlier time in your life. That practiced skill hardwires you to always rehearse things to ensure you always sound smart. Literally, it’s a disease that keeps you from being happy. When you can see it – when you can realize that truth, when you understand it, your mind will naturally calm down. When you get there, you will stop rehearsing as much, though it will still be a trained habit. It will still clutter your mind from time to time. Keep at it. Note it. Be happy you noted it and it disappears.   You don’t have to live out in the country on a lovely homestead to be peaceful and happy. I won’t deny it makes it much easier for me. It makes it much easier to maintain, though there are still many things that can disturb my peace. Scott and I chasing escaped goats comes to mind. We often disagree on the best approach to getting those guys back inside a fence. Afterwards, I choose to love him and he choose to love me – even though we both may have treated the other poorly during the crisis. Peace in our hearts is regained – re-established. Maybe someday peace will never elude us. I don’t know. Would we be bored then? Parmesan Peas Peas are not exactly peace but close. Especially peas straight out of the garden. And don’t forget that wonderful cheese. You can use frozen peas if you need to. However, this time of year, fresh peas make all the difference in the world. Here’s what you need. What you need: 2 tablespoons butter 3 small shallots, sliced  1-pound fresh peas, (14 oz bag of frozen, thawed) 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice  1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese black pepper to taste What to Do: Melt the butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the shallots and a pinch of the salt and cook until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes. Stir in the peas and remaining salt and cook until the peas are soft but still bright green, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the lemon juice and toss. Remove from heat and stir in the Parmesan and black pepper. Serve hot. That’s it. Let that flavor of fresh peas bring peace to your tongue and tummy. Final Thoughts Life is about choice. We choose happiness. We choose peace. We choose love. I hope my words helped you gained some insight into how you can add just a little more peace to your life. And you’ll certainly want to add those lovely fresh peas to your life. Visit us at the Wytheville Farmer’s Market. We have dairy not peas, but others will be there with their lovingly grown products. Visit us and visit them. We look forward to meeting you. Welcome to the end of our first season.  Yes, we are taking June off, and will be back in the first weekend of July.  We are just gonna work on a few projects, and try to get some other ends nailed down - like, getting this rally thing settled. Twins are still kicking ass.  1 game ahead of the 2nd place Astros, and 10 games ahead in their division. Martin Truex Jr. won the Coca-Cola 600, his 3rd win of the season.  Having watched the entire race, all I can say is; it was awesome. Dale Jr, contact us, we just want to put a tiny sticker on one of your cars that says "Fueled by Tescasterone.com" right under the spoiler. Walking the Mall of America, I was drawn into the Old Timey Photo Store (I don't really remember the name of the place), Scotty and I want to get our photos done as Hickock and Bullock.  It got me to thinking, why are some of us drawn to certain time eras?  For Scott, when he was a teenager, it was the era of the 60's.  Peace, Love, and Happiness drew him there, or maybe it was the funny things he was smoking, who can tell? For Joe, though he did the hippie thing in his teens, too, he is more drawn to the piracy era - Black Beard, and the like.  When he was down sailing in the Caribbean, they spent the night in a protected bay on Norman Island (the same island used for a setting in the Treasure Island book).  As they were mooring to the buoy, he had flash while up on deck, of being on the deck of a large pirate vessel, he could hear the barked out commands, smell the tar used to patch holes and leaks in the hull, and feel the rough wood of the deck - blinked his eyes and it was over.  It just felt so familiar. We know other people who are drawn to the Scottish time era (think Brave Heart), the Native American traditional way of life, the renaissance era.  Although we don't know why people are drawn to these different time periods, we still find it fascinating.  So, dear readers, to where (or, when) are you drawn?  Find me on Twitter (Just search for #tescasterone - I am Tescasterone Joe), or log on to Tescasterone's Facebook, and post some stuff there.  Say Hi. We are wanting to do this rally, if we have to we will run it just the two of us.  It would still be a great time, but would be way more fun running with a bunch of you fine people.  If you want to join us, tweet me, or post a message on Facebook.  Let us know. We are liking Jon and Sea of Vapors' contribution, however, if you can come up with some music for a theme for Tescasterone, something you would be proud to put your name on, we would be happy to put it into rotation with Sea of Vapors.  It doesn't have to be Rock n Roll, whatever floats your musical boat. We are looking forward to July, however we will be on our Social Media, waiting for you to say Hi.   Joe and Scott.

Finding huge success on YouTube is absolutely possible - if you follow the five new principles to unlock new achievements and help monetize your content. We spoke to YouTube expert creator Scott Simson who has used the five principles process to drive 300,000 subscribers, and 100 million organic views across his YouTube channels in just 18 months. For the full show notes, head over to https://vidiq.com/blog/post/five-principles-youtube-success-tubetalk-156The Five Principles of Success on YouTubeFor anyone creating content on YouTube with the aim of increasing views and subscribers, there are a number of programming and audience development strategies they need to be aware of. YouTube expert Scott takes us through five of the most important:#1 Find Your Focus Then Stay in Your LaneScott highly recommends focusing in on a topic or category that you are most familiar with, or are at a specialist at, and go all out on creating and promoting content about that theme on YouTube. At one time, creators could publish videos around a broad topic (for instance - family vlogging) and upload a wide variety of content from different angles. But as YouTube continues to refine its algorithm with the aim of surfacing relevant, quality content to viewers, creators need a single focus. In other words, you have to do one thing really, really well in order for the algorithm to like you.Scott learned this lesson through experience last year when views tanked on his general ‘family’ content. While many other family-focused vlogging channels diversified and incorporated wider trends in their programming strategy, Scott made the decision to refine exactly what they wanted to offer their audience and double down, and triple down on content that has driven huge views and engagement. It’s a strategy that’s worked. For any creator who is just starting out, Scott recommends that until you have established a base audience of people who are watching you, stick with one thing. Once you get into the hundreds of thousands, or even millions of subscribers and your daily views are in the hundreds of thousands or millions, then you can start to branch a little bit and do more of a variety because you have a core community of people that's large enough that will follow you wherever you go, whatever you do. At the beginning, the safest thing to do is to carve out your little niche on YouTube and focus exclusively on that for a good long while.#2 Diversify Your Income from Video - NowThere was a time when you could predict your income from YouTube based off what you made in the previous year. Those days are long gone. Now, income can fluctuate month to month so YouTubers need to diversify where your income is coming in from. For Scott, that means not being reliant on Adsense income but looking at many other monetization opportunities including brand deals, product sales, affiliate links, lead generation etc. He advises any other creator looking to earn a passive income (or a more substantial income) to do the same.Think of a product that you can sell and sell it from the beginning. Try and talk to brands early. Most companies now understand the power of influence on marketing, and so they're willing to deal with micro influencers, whether it be with product sales or with affiliate type of program or with just product trade for video time. Most brands now realize that's the power of YouTube and social video. If you sell a product or service obviously your YouTube Channel is a great vehicle for sales or lead generation. Or, if there is a way to create a physical product around your channel (like an ebook) then that’s an opportunity for you to monetize too. Alternatively, you can leverage your subscriber base via affiliate

IT Career Energizer
Learn to Focus on Your Career and Be Brave Enough to Take on New Challenges with Scott Tolinski

IT Career Energizer

GUEST BIO: Scott Tolinski is a Senior Web Developer for Team Detroit and formerly a web applications developer for The University of Michigan. Additionally Scott is a freelance web designer and developer, and provides private training and consultancy on various web topics.  Scott is also co-creator of Level Up Tutorials, providing free training to developers looking to learn something new. EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Scott Tolinski is Phil’s guest on today’s I.T. Career Energizer podcast. He is a former Team Detroit developer who also worked for The University of Michigan as an applications developer. For several years he was a Senior Developer with Q LTD. Today, Scott runs his own web development teaching company. In 2012, he started Level Up Tutorials alongside Ben Schaaf. Today, Scott runs the business and has turned it into the go-to learning resource for developers. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (1.09) – So Scott, can you expand on that brief introduction and tell us a little bit more about yourself? Scott starts out by explaining that he actually left Team Detroit, a while ago, but has not yet updated his website to reflect that fact. He is now working full time on Level Up Tutorials. That means recording, editing, producing and coding between 20 and 25 videos per month. As well as, updating and maintaining the actual website. Scott describes his website as being - a magazine for coding tutorials. Scott also produces a twice weekly web development podcast called Syntax, with Wes Bos. They approach the subject of web development from the point of view of teachers. The podcasts offer effective web development lessons in a format that is easy for everyone to access and use anywhere. (2.34) – Phil asks Scott for a unique IT career tip. Scott’s advice is to never be afraid of new opportunities. It was his dad that made him realize the benefits of trying something new and fresh. His dad had taken advantage of each new opportunity and been very successful. So, Scott decided to do the same, even if a new opportunity seems scary, he will usually say yes and dive in. Most of the time, this approach pays off. On the rare occasion that it doesn’t, Scott quickly faces up to his mistake and moves on to something else. Leaving his job to become a full-time entrepreneur was scary, challenging and quite stressful. But, Scott does not regret a minute of it and would do the same again. (4.29) – Phil agrees that you should never let fear of the unknown stop you from making a change. He quoted Richard Branson who said – “Work hard, take your chances, and seize opportunities when they present themselves. Don't give in to the fear and self-doubt and instead find ways to make it happen. Those who are bold have a higher chance of being rewarded," (5.03) – Scott says that is exactly what he does. If it is a big thing, he just says yes. Later, he figures everything out. But, he points out that if it is not a big thing, you need to say no. If you do not, those little opportunities just end up getting in your way. (5.17) – At this point, Scott is asked to share his worst career moment. Scott explained that he once had the perfect job. Everything was great, the company, the work and the people he was working with, he loved it. But, he got tempted and took another job. Basically, because it was a little bit more big time and, of course, there was a pay bump. He soon realized that the grass was not greener in his new role. The projects were bad and the designers not as experienced. Plus, they were using outdated techniques and the management team did not really care much about the work. Often, Scott was getting his part of the project completed months ahead of schedule. Yet, when that happened, the management team didn’t give him any meaningful work to fill in the gap. However, this situation was not all bad. Scott legitimately ended up with a lot of free time on his hands. So, he was able to learn a lot of new things. He learned Backbone, Angular and Ember. After six months, he was able to take all of that knowledge and land a really sweet gig. (7.57) – What else did you learn from that experience? Scott said that it gave him a different perspective on work in general. It made him think about the type of people he wanted to work with and the kinds of projects he wanted to be involved in. That experience taught him not to just settle. Instead, he searches out exciting projects and ensures that he will be working with a good team. (8.56) – Phil asks Scott what his best career moment was. Scott says that it was probably quitting his job and working for himself. He feels particularly good about being able to provide for his family off the back of something that he created. Interestingly, it was not his intention to earn his living from his tutorial work. At first, he just posted his work to YouTube. It came as a big surprise to learn that he could translate that into a business that paid enough for him to be able to take care of his family. Not being a born entrepreneur means that, for Scott, learning to run his own company was a steep learning curve. But, he is, understandably, proud of what he has achieved with Level Up Tutorials. (10.59) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers, in particular? Scott finds the fact that it is so much easier to deliver the functionality that users really want to be exciting. In the past, adding something like live chat to a website would have been challenging and time-consuming. Today, it is easy and it can all be done really quickly. This frees you up to be more creative and opens up a world of possibilities for the client and their customers. Scott is excited by the fact that things will continue to evolve and get easier. (13.00) - Phil says that he is also excited about this. The ease with which web development can be done, these days, makes it possible to deliver truly appropriate solutions and do so quickly. (13.16) – Scott goes on to highlight the ease with which you can create efficient sites. For example, using React, you can now build blisteringly fast static sites. This is particularly important for people who live in parts of the world that have a slow internet connection. (14.08) – What drew you to a career in IT? Scott first got interested in IT when he wanted to add a flash intro to his band’s website. He fell in love with the problem-solving process and realized it was a great outlet for his flair for design. (14.47) – What is the best career advice you have been given? Scott says it is probably the advice he mentioned at the start of the show – take every good opportunity that is presented to you. He uses his intuition to guide him in terms of what is exciting and finds that listening to his gut is the best way to work out whether to say yes or not. (15.31) – If you were to start your IT career again, now, what would you do? When Scott went to college he had a long list of interests and things he wanted to do. He had a passion for music and was interested in graphic design and becoming a motion graphics artist. It was great to have so many interests. But, it meant that he lacked focus. So, if he were to start his IT career again, he would be sure to focus on just doing that, instead of spreading himself too thinly. (16.35) – Phil asks Scott what he is currently focusing on. Right now, Scott is working on getting better at delegating and communicating. He has a small team which he wants to grow, so that he can work more efficiently. His plan is to become more of a leader and step away a bit from being the developer of the site. (17.26) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? For Scott it has been having a student mentality. Being open to learning has enabled Scott to stay ahead of developments. A fact that ensures what he teaches is never out of date. (18.27) – Phil asks Scott to share a final piece of career advice. Scott explains that he did not follow a typical career path into IT. In fact, his first few jobs had nothing to do with the industry. Plus, he does not have a computer science degree. However, he would not let this stop him from working in IT. His parting piece of advice is not to let where you are today hold you back. Become a good student, learn and keep on pushing forwards to secure the job you really want. BEST MOMENTS: (2.55) Scott – “I haven't ever been afraid of new opportunities, when they present themselves.” (5.03) Scott – “If it's a big thing, I almost always say yes, and figure it out later.” (12.20) Scott – “Two years down the line, what kind of experiences am I going to be able to give people that I couldn't give them right now.” (18.01) Scott – “My number one non-technical skill is my ability or drive to want to continue to grow myself and my abilities as a developer.” (18.53) Scott – “Do not let whatever your current situation is hold you back from where you want to be” CONTACT SCOTT: Twitter: https://twitter.com/stolinski LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stolinski/ Website: www.scotttolinski.com

Matt and Scott take a moment to reflect on how their lives have changed after the whirlwind year that was 2018, and how their training has evolved along with them. For even the most dedicated among us, training takes a backseat to life sometimes, and that's OK. As we age, gather experiences and grow, our priorities change, and training changes to reflect that.    For Scott, that meant taking off a large portion of training during the fall of 2018 while he worked through the sale of his business, Data Storage, Inc. He trained when he could, which sometimes meant only once per week. Under intense stress, he eschewed his normal training program and simply tried to get under the bar and do a few exercises. Now that the sale has closed and he's back to a more normal schedule, Scott has been running a basic LP as he climbs back to heavier loads on the main lifts. As mentioned in previous episodes, LP is a useful tool even for a lifter who has been training for years. It's an excellent way to regain strength after a prolonged layoff. For Scott, the LP will only last a few weeks, and he will make much larger weight increases each workout than a novice trainee undergoing his first LP. So far it's paying off, as Scott has set some volume PR's on his pressing movements.   Matt has remained fairly consistent with his training despite the fast-paced growth of his company Starting Strength Online Coaching. Caring for his ailing father, however, has shifted his priorities from strength training to health and longevity. To that end Matt has sought to lose weight and reduce his waistline while dieting in a way that fits his busy lifestyle, which includes frequent travel and restaurant dinners. He has found that intermittent fasting works well for him, allowing him to manage his calories throughout the day without worrying how many calories he is eating at dinner. His ability to train in the morning is diminished somewhat, but he has enjoyed the clarity of mind that comes in the fasted state. Most importantly, he feels good, is losing weight, and still continues to train -- all in a manner that fits his personality and lifestyle.   Barbell Logic will always be about training and the myriad benefits it has on our lives, but even training is sometimes about... well, not training. In other words, life detrains us over time: as we age, as major events take over our time, as our priorities change. These moments serve as opportunities for us to re-evaluate our goals and change our methods, if needed. Through it all, the barbell is constant. To quote from Henry Rollins' classic article Iron and the Soul, The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. How do you show up in your life? Are you living your best life every day? Today’s show is full of inspiration to help you leave the mundane behind and push yourself to never again accept mediocrity as your normal.  Scott Mulvaney channels his health-nut, adrenaline-junkie energy into everything he influences. That same energy comes through on his LIVETHEFUEL podcast, which helps fuel your health, business, and lifestyle. Scott focuses on sales and marketing growth, brand strategy, coaching, and consulting solutions to help you control how you exist online. There are very few people as passionate as Scott about living his best life every day.  Wanting something “different” Can you look back at specific circumstances in your life and see the lessons learned? For Scott, the life lessons are everywhere as he contemplates his life journey. He was raised in a farm family in NJ that relocated later to PA, where Scott’s family still lives and works in farming today. Scott, however, wanted something different. He never thought he would go to college because school was never easy or comfortable, but then he discovered vocational tech school. He interned at an electronics lab at 17 years old and then learned a tough lesson when he was let go from the lab he built so an adult could be hired to run the lab.  TWEET: Life lessons are everywhere, so don’t be afraid to look for them in your successes and failures. #chasingdreams A two-year detour Scott went on to achieve college degrees in marketing AND psychology, but then something changed. He met a girl from the west coast who aspired to be a Hotshot firefighter. He thought that sounded like an interesting challenge, and said to himself, “What if this is the next phase of my dream?” The training and the concept blew his mind, so in 2010, he went out west and proved himself for two years. Since the Hotshot “season” was only a few months of the year, he spent the other months traveling and making some crazy connections with all kinds of people. TWEET: What they taught me in school, I don’t use. #chasingdreams Why LIVETHEFUEL? If you’ve ever contemplated doing a podcast, you’ve probably toyed with what you would name your show. Scott had listened to a lot of podcasts as he was busy helping a friend grow her company, but he knew there was something more he was meant to do. For inspiration, he covered a wall with Post-It notes of every keyword that meant something to him. He took the mantra, “Live life to the fullest” and altered it to “Live the fired-up epic life”-----and the acronym FUEL was born. Now, Scott is busy writing a book, for which he plans to donate his proceeds to the families of fallen firefighters.  TWEET: What if I could write a book and NOT make money from it? #chasingdreams **For a bonus behind-the-scenes conversation with Scott, visit http://ww.aimeej21/patreon and become a Patreon Donor. Scott Jelinek joins Brian on the podcast for a third time on the show. Scott recently gave a keynote speech on his slow flip process, and today he does a brief follow-up on the podcast with Brian. They discuss some of the regulations that govern the purchase process, some market trends, and how to decide which properties to buy and how to sell them.   Key Takeaways:   [3:10] Scott has previously presented a keynote on slow flips. They buy houses like a car and sell them like a house; they buy on five-year money and sell them on thirty-year money. [4:40] The average homeowner in America only stays in their house for five to seven years. Scott explains how the buyer takes the burden of ownership, and if they fulfill the terms in the contract they become the owner. If they don’t pay, it is an eviction. [7:20] When it comes to Dodd-Frank, you’re allowed to do three deals per year per entity. When you sell to investors or as an investment, there are no regulations. It becomes a commercial transaction. [9:15] For Scott in his market, he looks for houses with an ARV of around $70K-$100K, and buys for no more than $30K. With this model, you either have to be doing your own marketing to get deals or work with someone who gets you deals. [10:40] A slow flip is a little different than a retail sale, where someone renovates it and puts it back on the market. Instead, they are distress sales or a regular sale without renovation. Their price estimates come from a few different places — Zillow, tax appraisals — but ultimately the value comes from what someone is willing to pay for it. [13:25] The attractive thing about a slow flip for the buyer is the payment and the non-qualifying, versus the actual purchase price. When investors buy the properties, they usually rent it out, and Scott’s company acts as the bank. [14:45] The numbers that are viable in Scott’s market won’t be realistic in all markets across the U.S. Brian talks about some of the properties in his market, and some of the parameters you can apply to the market wherever you are. [16:55] For areas where the only strategy to make money is to owner-finance, Scott will also wholesale. The properties he keeps as slow flips are ones that don’t really have retail value in the market. [18:40] Keep in mind that if you are selling to owner-occupied, you will be the most heavily regulated in that situation. If you’re just getting started, you might want to consider selling to non-owner occupants at first.   Mentioned in This Episode:   Meetings Daily REIA Show Facebook Page Brian’s Book Scott’s Keynote at REIA

Matt and Scott answer your questions in Q&A #4. Listeners submitted questions via email and Instagram and the boys will tackle them over the course of several episodes.   This week they answer: Donald Kavanaugh asks: What makes you rage? For Scott, pretentious patrons at the local movie theater, apparently. Matt dodged the question. Andy Roth asks: What kind of data does Matt have on SSOC client progress during online coaching? Matt has hired a team of statisticians to review all the client data SSOC has been gathering, which will be published in the future on Starting Strength, but he offers one interesting tidbit: the average male SSOC client increases his squat almost 300% during the life of the training. From Starting Strength superfan Tyler Austin: When training the general population, do you prefer the Press 2.0 or the Classic Press (a la Bill Starr with layback)? Matt prefers a progression from strict press to 2.0, with intermediate steps if the client just can't get the timing of the hips down with the 2.0. Scott agrees, noting that unless his client is going to compete, he doesn't teach the Classic Press at all. Stan Belot asks: How do you manage training while on business or vacation, especially when you don't have your regular equipment? Scott says just get in the gym, do something as heavy as you can, and get out. The consistency is the important thing; you don't have to hit your numbers exactly. Matt adds that if you're on vacation and have been training regularly leading up to it, don't sweat it. One week of missed training is not going to hurt you. On the other hand, if you travel frequently for business, you need to figure out how to pack up your essentials and train wherever you can. Liquid chalk is your friend! What macro-friendly foods have you found lately? Scott likes the chicken kebab platter (double chicken), greek salad, and braised beans at Zoe's Kitchen. He likes the tsatiki sauce because it's pretty low fat. Matt likes greek-style yogurt in general as a replacement for fatty toppings such as sour cream, cream cheese, etc. Bobby asks: How do you manage toddlers/young children in the gym? Matt and Scott says let them in, set the safeties, teach them to avoid the platform, and set a good example by showing them that you work hard under the barbell to make your self harder to kill. Greg Boltman asks: What is your process as a coach and organization to drive continuous improvement in your coaching and training programs? The SSOC coaches communicate frequently via Slack, sharing case studies and strategies for managing various clients. Then there's reading. The most important thing, however, is seeing lots of reps on a regular basis. It's important to see different types of people too. Matt thinks that watching lots of reps gives the coach an edge which can be lost, so good coaches need to watch plenty of reps to keep their skills up.    More Q&A's to come in the future! #85 - Confidence Matters: Strength Training's Greatest Benefit Isn't What You Think

Barbell Logic

Most people don't think about the emotional benefits of weight lifting, or how exercise can build confidence, when they step into a gym. Yet it is perhaps the most transformative benefit of strength training. Today Matt and Scott share stories of how strength training has transformed their own sense of self-confidence, as well as that of their clients.   For Matt strength training brought him a sense of confidence as a young man, where he struggled as a small, timid late -bloomer in high school. Later in life training became a way to refocus his addictive tendencies toward more positive goals, and gave him the courage to leave his teaching career and pursue a more meaningful path as a coach and business owner. Scott, on the other hand, was seeking a way to get the fire back, to look and feel like the person he wanted to be after years of neglecting his physical fitness. He was also seeking a way to live a more virtuous life, in an Aristotelian sense, applying voluntary hardship to an otherwise comfortable middle class American life to cultivate virtue.   For Sybil, Matt's 83 year old client who joined the podcast in episode #24, strength training meant regaining the confidence to go and check her mail every afternoon, the confidence to climb sets of stairs without worrying about falling. And the ability to walk without help. For Scott's young man who completed his first session with a 15lb squat, it's the confidence to tackle a big challenge in front of strangers even when dealing with social anxiety.   Strength training is not the only thing that builds confidence and cultivates virtue, but it's probably the most general and approachable thing. Rock climbing and running marathons are certainly voluntary hardship, but Sybil can't do those. Neither could Matt's 13 year old daughter. But both can strength train.   Connect With Matt Matt on Instagram Starting Strength Online Coaching — Matt’s website Matt on Facebook Matt on Twitter Connect With Scott Scott on Instagram Silver Strength – Scott’s website Scott on Facebook Scott on Twitter Connect With the Show Barbell Logic on Twitter Barbell Logic on Instagram The Website Barbell Logic on Facebook barbelllogicpodcast@gmail.com

As an ASE-Certified Master Auto Technician, Advanced Engine Performance Specialist, Undercar Specialist & Service Consultant, he saw the need for a more modern auto service center in the fast-growing community of Lonsdale, MN Scott’s strong background in domestic and import vehicles helped form the vision of what Lonsdale Auto Works is today. He built a reputation for quality service and fair pricing starting out with just one apprentice. As the need arose, additional technicians have joined Scott’s team to keep up with their customers need for fast, quality service. Scott lives in Lonsdale with his wife Sandy and their son and daughter.  Scott is also very active in the community. He is currently in his second term as a Lonsdale City Council Member. He has held numerous leadership positions with the Boy Scouts and has served as a director of the Lonsdale Chamber of Commerce and is currently a member of the Lonsdale Lions Club. Talking points: Scott started the ASOG (Automotive Shop Owners Group) on Facebook because he was frustrated with a customer problem and he was looking for insight. For Scott, he fell into the ‘grass was greener’ syndrome when it came to starting his own shop. He soon realized he was wrong. He didn’t have the business skills and money management skills to own his own shop. As a manager, he expected that his people would act like him and work at the 110% level. Phone quotes is a big debate for him. He attempted not to do a quote over the phone. Some of his customers thought that it was an aggressive tactic. He was a new business in the town and it was not received well even though his coach pushed him in this direction. He tried it, but changed and is now giving quotes over the phone. His purpose is helping people. He says he has a hero complex. He is there for the people in the community. Going from E to P changed Scott Klaas’ life for the better, and it can do the same for you. Here’s how. Here at my latest mastermind trip, we’ve been talking about Keller Williams’ six personal perspectives. One of those perspectives I want to share with you is going from E to P, and I’m happy to be joined by fellow agent Scott Klaas from Wisconsin and have him explain how this perspective had a positive impact on him and his business. The E in this perspective means “entrepreneurial.” Your natural ability, energy level, and anything else you can naturally do has a ceiling of achievement, and the only way to bust through that ceiling of achievement is to go to P, which means “purposeful.” Hearing that for the first time changed Scott’s life. Now everything he does has to have a system, a model, and it has to have leverage behind it. “Those three things will break you through your ceiling of achievement,” he says. “And then that ceiling will become your new floor. “WHEN YOU KEEP BUSTING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE CEILING, YOU NEED MORE LEVERAGE AND BETTER SYSTEMS AND MODELS.” From there, you can move toward your next level of achievement. When you keep busting your head against the ceiling, you need more leverage and better systems and models. From there, you can keep going up and up. What are some ways to increase your ceiling? For Scott, going from E to P is about having a better life. He was working nonstop 16- and 18-hour days with 10 to 20 deals always under contract. He was always dealing with something wrong, or some headache, or always putting out fires, and he was never present anywhere. When you get purposeful, you have other people take some of those responsibilities, and you time block extremely well. It frees up your nights and weekends and helps every area of your life. If you’d like to get in touch with Scott or you’d like to send a referral his way, you can reach him on Facebook, call him at (414) 795-6675, or send him an email at sklaas@kw.com. If you have any questions for me, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. I’d be happy to speak with you.

Statistically, reaching kids and women first will only get you so far. Reaching husbands and fathers first yields a 93% return rate in reaching the entire family. Targeting men with the saving truth of Jesus Christ dying in our place to offer us forgiveness and purpose in life is transformative for them as well as the families they lead and the spheres of influence they are engaged.  Scott’s own dad left him a powerful legacy of hope-filled encouragement. Hearing words like, “Son, I forgive you,” after a window-breaking childhood mishap powerfully resonate with Scott to this day. “In life, you will hit bad shots, but never stop swinging.” Any golfer man can connect to this metaphor of never giving up as we navigate life. Men, we’re called to set the spiritual thermostat of faith in our homes. If our overall temperature is cold or luke-warm at best, that will be our family’s too. If we want families on fire for the gospel of Jesus, we have to burn hot for Christ. What It Means: To be “In His Grip” is to recognize God’s seat of priority in your life. It’s to adopt His divine plan not only for your forgiveness and salvation but also your purpose in everyday relationships and choices. To remain fully connected to Christ, always rooted “in His grip,” we must be committed to God’s word. Scott does this with an acronym for (you guessed it…GOLF). He “tees” up everyday by setting a daily time to read scripture and protecting it from interruption. For Scott, he and the men he mentors read a chapter of Proverbs daily following this outline. G – God’s word [read a passage and identify one verse that really stands out above the rest] O – observation [what does the verse really say…what is the message God wants me to hear?] L – life application [how does it apply…what does it mean for me to live in light of this word?] F – finish with prayer [centering yourself on the truth and committing that verse to heart and mind] Men are inundated with so many messages from the world about what matters. It’s important to remember that climbing the ladder is great unless you reach the top and realize it was leaning against the wrong building. Our greatest success will be our biggest failure if it’s not done for and built on God’s word and Christ’s kingdom. What We Do Next: Many men feel isolated and alone. Thinking along these lines is a fallacy. “I am all alone. I am the only one dealing with this issue, struggling with this sin, failing this problem.” These are the words of our enemy who wants to single us out for an easier target. Surrounded by other men mentoring us and investing in us offers strength. Our lives truly come to life when someone is pouring into us and we are pouring into others. Find a mentor and be a mentor.  It does start at home and by considering what we want our legacies to be. Scott recommends the “rocking chair” test. At 90 years old with your memory and wit still strong, what will you regret when you look back over the landscape of your life? Whatever the answer, direct your focus on that today so you don’t have to mourn the missed opportunity or misplaced priority later in life. With Christ as your focus, there won’t be regrets.

Scott Shawl has been solving puzzles for a while now. Technically his family has been solving the big buck deer hunting puzzle since the 1800s. Ask Scott about the 300+ pound monster whitetail that his great grandfather Daniel Shawl shot back in 1914 and you'll quickly realize that the Shawl's have a long tradition of hunting whitetail bucks in places most hunters won't go. For Scott, a trip deep into a swamp with hip boots to hunt high pressured bucks is not uncommon. Scott says that hunting pressure gets so high that a even a buck which hides deep in thick swamps can walk 100 yards and live, but beyond that, it's probably a dead deer. Scott has learned to adapt his hunting to go where other hunters won't hunt, a strategy similar to Dan Infalt. Scott says that Dan helped him perfect his craft by getting closer to big bucks sleeping in swamp beds. We cover lots of ground in this show.
