Fortnite Battle Royale this week introduced a Darth Vader character powered by Gemini AI, allowing lines to be generated in real time that would be said in the likeness of James Earl Jones. Naturally, the internet managed to put this to some horrible use within minutes, which has us questioning why a game like this needed something like this in the first place? Has Epic Games just handed SAG-AFTRA what they need in their STILL ongoing negotiations for AI protections? Is this really what gamers want in the future of games, or what people in boardrooms think we want? We debate this, and discuss much more in gaming news on another week of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! Also in the News: * Bungie Accused of Plagiarizing ... In the 1990s and 2000s, video game developer Epic Games had a string of mid-size successes. But the release of Fortnite Battle Royale in 2017 changed the company's path forever. The game was a blockbuster. By 2019, Fortnite had registered more than 250 million users, with 10 million concurrent users. But Fortnite's phenomenal success raised a new question for Epic: How could they turn this singular hit into a series of growth opportunities? In this episode, Harvard Business School associate professor Andy Wu explains why Epic monetized Fortnite through micro-transactions within the game, rather than charging a fee for the game itself. He also discusses how Epic's creation of a platform, the Epic store, and a premium subscription service built on Fortnite's success and helped to distinguish their brand from other free-play games.Key episode topics include: strategy, growth strategy, R&D, strategy execution, video games, fortnite, epic games. I 2017 udkom spillet dog endelig.

Look closely at your competitors. Is there anything they do better than you? Maybe it's their messaging, their branding, their logo. Whatever it is, it doesn't hurt to “borrow” ideas from them. We won't call it stealing. That's just one of the things we're talking about in this episode as we take marketing lessons from Fortnite with the help of special guest, VP, Head of Content at GreenSlate, Chris Anderson. Together, we chat about borrowing ideas from your competitors, providing opportunities for customization, and making pleasingly digestible content.About our guest, Chris AndersonChris Anderson is VP, Head of Content at GreenSlate, a best-in-class software that simplifies and streamlines payroll and accounting for TV and film productions. It has six game modes: Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite Battle Royale, and Fortnite Creative, Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival. It's available across platforms like Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and some Android devices. It's incredibly popular with over 500 million registered users, and around 230 million active players each month. The game has generated around $26 billion since it launched. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Fortnite:Borrow ideas from your competitors. If your competitors are offering a product or service you don't have and it's doing well, build it out for your brand too. Chris says, “In 2017 PUBG (a game called PlayerUnknown's Battleground) was the big battle royale, and Fortnite was primarily focused on their pay-to-play model, which was Save the World. But they recognized in their competitor that there was a mode that they did not have that was very good and popular. And they understood that if they changed course and put it out as a free-to-play model, that was worth it. They were flexible and they adapted and they put something out that was fun and engaging for a different audience.”Provide opportunities for customization. Ian says, “One of the ultimate B2B lessons is making the customer feel like they're getting exactly what they want and none of the features that they don't want.” Fortnite lets players choose what game mode they want to play, what they want their character to look like, and what emotes they want to use. It gives players ownership of their character and how they feel about the gaming experience.Make it short and sweet. Whether it's a newsletters, blog post, article, email, whatever…make your content pleasingly digestible. People should be able to consume it easily and in a short amount of time. Ian says Fortnite is super addictive because of “the speed in which the rounds happen. If you're out, you're out for a little bit, but then you can go back in and do something else. It's just got this built-in super fast pace that makes it really engaging.” And Chris added that he can knock out a game in a matter of minutes.Quotes*”Epic Games is really good at understanding their audience as well as their potential audience that they don't have. They capture these different audiences across the board in these different categories. And they're pulling in all these people from different places because they have this platform that's flexible enough to build on top of it. It's quite brilliant.” - Chris Anderson*“There's a difference between what you think people want, what you want them to want, and then what they actually want. In B2B you can put a ton of effort into building a new feature because maybe you've done some market research and you think that, ‘Oh, people definitely want this. This is something that they're interested in.' You build it, spend the time, you put it out there and it bombs, or for whatever reason, it just doesn't resonate. It's hard for people to pull back from these sometimes because you put all that energy, all that effort into creating that product.” - Chris Anderson*”It's hard to bullshit people. You could be really good at content marketing and really good at pushing narratives. But if the product itself can't back it up, you're going to forever be chasing a dream.” - Chris AndersonTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Chris Anderson, VP, Head of Content at GreenSlate[1:12] Discussion about Fortnite in B2B Marketing[1:17] What does Chris' role at GreenSlate entail?[1:17] What makes Fortnite remarkable?[4:21] What are some B2B marketing' takeaways from Fortnite?[38:57] What is Chris' content strategy?[50:03] What can we learn about content calendars from Fortnite?[57:45] What advice would Chris give other marketers?LinksPlay FortniteConnect with Chris on LinkedInLearn more about GreenSlateAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. As summer comes to a close and the leaves begin to brown, the gaming world goes through its own sort of transition. A handful of new titles prep for launch, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. But unlike previous CoD titles, Black Ops 4 represents a counter-attack on the world's biggest game, Fortnite Battle Royale. For the first time, Call of Duty is ditching a campaign and opting to introduce a new Battle Royale mode to the first-person shooter.
The launch of Fortnite Battle Royale has left Google in a slight predicament. While Google is in no way hard up for cash, Fortnite Battle Royale for Android certainly represented the potential for a relatively big revenue stream for an app. That is, until Epic Games decided it would launch Fortnite for Android from its own website, circumventing the Play Store.
Epic Games continues to spread the love… to consumers, at least. Following the launches of Fortnite Battle Royale on iOS earlier this year and Fortnite for the Nintendo Switch earlier this summer, Epic Games is now confirming that the Android version of the game will be available exclusively through the Fortnite website. Users can visit Fortnite.com and download the Fortnite Launcher, which will then allow them to load Fortnite Battle Royale onto their devices.
Last weekend, Epic Games put forth its first true effort at official competitive Fortnite Battle Royale. It was a disaster. The private hosts used for the tournament were about as laggy as could be, with pro players getting eliminated simply because they couldn't move. This tournament was for a total prize of $250K. That's big money, and big frustration for pro players who were essentially eliminated by the whims of the server gods.

We spent our weekend at South by Southwest in Austin, TX for the Gaming Expo. We met some incredible people with remarkable stories, lots of laughs and some fantastic games. We talk all about the games we got to play while on the show floor including West of Loathing, Once Upon a Coma and more. We also finally jump into Fortnite Battle Royale, afraid to escape from PUBG and find it to be much better than we anticipated. Dare we say hooked? 600,000 people tuned in this past week to watch Drake and Ninja play Fortnite so that was partially why we jumped in. In addition, Arlington, TX of all places is getting a huge eSports arena and we learn the height of Mario character's based on Luigi's penis size. This week, we sit down and discussion innovative gameplay mechanics. There are many things we take for granted these days such as auto-saves, destructible environments and even jumping. Can you believe we used to not be able to jump in games? We discuss all of the major gameplay mechanics and how they changed the way we play games forever. Ryan and Matt "Bass Awkward" Amberg are back and bite-sized about Bill and/or Ted apparently-but-actually John Wick 2, Killing Gunther, The Bouncing Souls doc, and Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell no Tales (you wish!) before it's on to time spent with Madden 18's Longshot finale, Fortnite: Battle Royale, Steppy Pants, Domino Drop, Micro Machines World Series, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and DDR Universe (of course). That may seem like enough, because it is, but also Star Wars Battlefront 2, Witnesses, strikes, boxes, graphs, and golf!
