Sprecher: David Fox, Christian Schmidt, Gunnar Lott. Audioproduktion: Lars Rühmann, Christian Schmidt Titelgrafik: Paul Schmidt Intro, Outro: Nino Kerl (Ansage); Chris Hülsbeck (Musik)

Thanks for bearing with us as we took the month of June off. It's great to finally be back, and we're looking forward to so many more great games this year! First off, it was so fun to finally go back and play these two games. Reminded us of why we started MOLMF in the first place. Secondly, we spent some extra time this episode talking about what's going on in the country (and world) today, and what we're doing to address some of those issues personally—hopefully you appreciate the transparency. Thanks for coming along the the ride. We'd love to hear your thoughts on it!We start off talking about why we took a month off and what we want to do differently going forward, then we eventually get into the development and gameplay of both games (25:30). We have our first ever commercial (53:45), then of course we play a lovely round of "What's The Beer/Drink? What's The Song?" (58:00), and end things talking about what else we've been playing (65:15), and what we'll by playing next month for our 50TH GAME!!!! Get psyched. Here's the website to the Black Game Developers website we mentioned, as well as Salman Shurie's Twitter, and our past interview with David Fox. As always, if you in any way enjoyed this episode, feel free to rate and review it in iTunes or wherever else you're listening to it. TCW Podcast Episode 108- Adventuring with LucasArts Part 1 We look at LucasFilm games, AKA LucasArts. Not the company as a whole, but their influence on adventure games. Not only were they instrumental in advancing adventure games, they were able to affect the industry as a whole. We look briefly at the formation of the company, and get into some of their early projects. A young contractor, Ron Gilbert, joined the team by helping to convert some early games to the Commodore 64. Gilbert was later the driving force in creating an adventure game that was not full of deaths, saves, and no-win states. On this episode of The Atari 5200 Podcast... Fatigue from the holidays and cold and flu season can't stop the crew of this podcast! But it came pretty close. This episode we cover the two games that were created by Lucasfilm Games, Ballblazer and Rescue on Fractalus. Steve and Capt. Bob compare sniffles, Pete's inner game geek is let loose upon the world, Glen is off doing other amazing stuff, and David tests out his new recording equipment. Which is why about 10 minutes into the episode he mysteriously disappears. Which strangely works out. Because these are two games that we can talk about all day, but they must be played and experienced to be truly appreciated. And for the first time, Show Notes! When we talk about the beginnings of online community, we often discuss The WELL, which launched in 1985. It’s easy to forget that some people, like our guest on this episode, were building digital communities well before that. Randy Farmer co-created Habitat, recognized as the first graphical virtual world. Over the last 30 years, he has helped companies like Lucasfilm, Electronic Arts, Linden Lab, Yahoo! and Answers.com to design better community products. On this episode, we discuss: Randy’s online community building efforts in the 1970s The importance of Habitat, and its recent revival Yahoo!’s acquisition of Flickr and what went on behind the scenes Big Quotes “You get prepared, do the thing, and then you talk about the thing. This pattern has been the basis of my career in understanding how humans interact socially and how computers can facilitate it.” -@frandallfarmer “I believe reputation systems have a key role to play in helping improve discourse between people. I don’t mean just cleaning it up and making it nice. I mean actually helping us have reasonable discussions that produce some output even if it ends up being multi-sided.” -@frandallfarmer “One of the reasons I think Twitter specifically has so many problems is it had no single context. It has infinite contexts. It becomes difficult to even use the same words, the same way. People are broadcasting, acting as if they’re having conversations, they’re not really having conversations. They’re talking past each other.” -@frandallfarmer “I don’t believe there’s a single truth. One of the things that’s interesting is that every time someone talks about fake news, I can’t get a handle on what fake news actually is. I can’t tell it apart from some of the stuff I see in the mainstream which leaves out important details or tells only one side of some story. It’s like, well, is that fake news? What is news?” -@frandallfarmer About Randy Farmer Randy Farmer has built online social systems almost continuously since high school in the 1970s, ultimately working at companies such as Lucasfilm Games, 3DO, Electronic Arts and Yahoo! He co-founded several startups, where he helped pioneer foundational technologies including avatars, virtual currencies, the JSON protocol, web apps, newsfeeds, futures and promises, amongst many others. Randy’s most recent was Suddenly Social, which made real-time multi-user mobile games, who’s server tech was ultimately open sourced as Elko II. He is co-author of “Building Web Reputation Systems” (O’Reilly Media). He presently calls himself a social media product strategy consultant, advising dozens of companies on how to design and operate social-powered applications, from websites to mobile apps to games. As a side project, Randy leads a ragtag team on the Neohabitatproject, bringing back the first MMO/virtual world, Lucasfilm’s Habitat, after 30 years, as 100% open source. Douglas Crockford: Galahad And The Holy Grail, Burgers! Douglas Crockford worked in Atari's Game Research Group under Chris Crawford. There he created a variety of demos -- including Ballsong and Crockford's Trench -- and games. He created Galahad And The Holy Grail, which was published by Atari Program Exchange in summer 1982; and Burgers!, which was published by APX in winter 1983. After Atari, he worked at LucasFilm where he worked on Atari games including Rescue on Fractalus! and Koronis Rift. This interview took place on July 16, 2016. Teaser quotes: "For most of what we wanted to accomplish it was not possible to do things correctly. So it was all about cheating." "If they hired an executive and he wasn't working out, it was too much trouble to fire him, so they would assign him to special projects." In this first episode discussing recently remastered LucasArts classic Day of the Tentacle, we talk about the influence of adventure games generally and the reputed mis-reporting of games being dead, as well as talking about the format of this game in particular. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Note: Brett keeps referring to Monkey Island 2 and Secret of Monkey Island kind of interchangeably. We regret the error. Sections played: Hard to say! But we both tried to get to where Laverne drapes herself in the flag, about three hours of play. Peter Langston, LucasArts Peter Langston was a founding employee at the game development company LucasArts, part of the team that created the Atari 8-bit games Ballblazer and Rescue on Fractalus. Peter composed Song Of The Grid, the memorable theme to Ballblazer. He also created the classic mainframe game Empire, and Oracle, the precursor to the Usenet Oracle (now called Internet Oracle.) Check his web site at langston.com for an interesting collection of papers, scans of LucasArts articles, and related material. This interview took place on January 16, 2016. David B. Fox, one of the original employees at Lucasfilm Games Division, joins us this week to talk about the first game he developed there called Rescue on Fractalus! We learn about how the Games Division got started, how the game almost didn't get made, and some of the firsts that this game brought to gaming. We even learn about how George Lucas himself contributed to make the game more than it was originally designed to be. For links to some of David's projects, visit the show notes at www.omgnexus.com
Hello, you are listening to Antic, the Atari 8-bit computer podcast. I am Randy Kindig, one of the co-hosts, and I’m bringing to you today an interview episode with the author of one of the best games ever released for the Atari 8-bit computer line. That would be David Fox, one of the authors of Rescue on Fractalus. David shares his memories of developing that iconic game, working for LucasFilm (later LucasArts), publishing a book about Atari graphics and much more. Please enjoy. This interview was conducted March 18, 2015 via Skype. Teaser Quotes: “Every time someone does a LucasArts or LucasIflm retrospective, they find me and they ask me to do stuff. Happy to talk to them because it's fun!” "The original 2 games that we did, which were Rescue and Ballblazer, were intended to be kind of throw-away games." "Thank you George (Lucas). He knew about story telling in a way that I didn't and it was really great to have his feedback on that."
