We're trying something new for the season of Lent and offering space to engage with the sermon from Sunday through asking questions. God isn't threated by questions. In fact, God loves our questions! So as we engage in a deeper examination of our own lives during the season of Lent, we have an opportunity to delve deeper into Scripture together. This is the set of questions from worship on Sunday, February 26. We hope that these responses spur further questions and conversation, since we can always go deeper into the heart of God.
Sermon on Exodus 6:1-13. This is the eighth sermon in our year-long series on Exodus, and the first sermon in the second movement of this sermon series called The Work of Freedom. In this second movement of Exodus, Moses has returned to Egypt to demand the people's freedom. But liberation takes work. Over this season of Lent and culminating on Easter Sunday, we will see the methods God and Moses use to secure freedom. Each Sunday, we will see one way God comes alongside of us to combat the sin and brokenness from which we need to be freed. In this sermon, we explore how when hope seems lost, we can trust in the promises of God.

The amount of women who deal with disordered eating on a daily basis is stifling. These are women, and may be you, who think about food from the moment they wake until they go to bed at night. They focus on what they will eat, what they won't eat, and how much. Least of all they focus on how hungry or satisfied they are. And they'll come to you for help with weight issues that are potentially catching up with them after struggling for years or retriggered because of the changes that occur during menopause. At no other time since puberty has the body gone through such a major change than as menopause, even including pregnancy which has it's own challenges and changes. At menopause though may have the advantage of having other individual's health at stake. The midlife woman is often influencing daughters and knows it. That may make the need or desire to change stronger. 00:00 My Guest: Mindy Gorman-Plutzer brings 2 decades of experience to her private practice as a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. What do you recommend a coach do working with clients with disordered eating, while they currently are being triggered themselves? It's not uncommon for midlife women to be in denial about disordered eating, or to simply not recognize it because it has been a pattern for so long. As women, many of us suffer from having disillusioned ideals of body image with a strong focus on diet and weight loss as the answer. But if our relationship with food is not “healthy”, we likely are feeling like we are on this cycle with no resolve. Our societal pressures and our past may affect the relationship we have with food; good and bad. What is your relationship with food? Do you suffer from disordered eating? What is “disordered eating”? Disordered eating, according to Mindy, is misguided behavior driven by misguided information.Understanding Disordered Eating: How the Diet Culture and Your Past Affects Your Relationship with FoodGUEST:Mindy Gorman Plutzer is a nutrition consultant, certified holistic health coach and eating psychology coach. Working in the weight management industry for 19 years, she has combined her background, trainings in holistic health, transformational coaching, and eating psychology with her extensive life experience to create The Freedom Promise, a private coaching practice.Mindy has worked with hundreds of clients to transform their relationship with food from one mired in toxic and limiting beliefs to one that is joyous, loving and free. She introduces strategies that are a combination of practical coaching techniques, results-oriented psychology, clinical nutrition, body-centered practices, mind-body science, and a positive and compassionate approach to challenges with food, weight and health. Statistics show that 30 million Americans have struggled with an eating disorder at some point in their lives. The most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and orthorexia. Over exercising, overeating, and using food to avoid intolerable situations are also forms of disordered eating. Many people with eating disorders go through conventional treatment, which is strict and based on managing weight and calories. It's not focused on how the person's psychology is underlying the condition, or how the condition is affecting their psychology. - In this episode of How Humans Heal I spoke with Mindy Gorman-Plutzer of The Freedom Promise [@thefreedompromise] who is changing the way support is offered for those with eating disorders. Mindy herself recovered from an eating disorder, and in the process, observed what was missing from the treatment, and became passionate about offering other solutions for people going through eating challenges and desiring the same sort of transformation. - We discuss: -How all systems of the body and mind are connected -The difference between “Doing recovery” versus being recovered -The power of story to understand the context of the behaviors -The behaviors started out as a solution; they are not the problem -Eating disorders versus disordered eating -How digestive issues are so common with eating disorders -The gut-brain axis -The benefits of supporting vagal tone -And so much more - Mindy explains that the definition of recovery is to regain what was lost. When we lose ourselves to compulsive behaviors, we lose a part of ourselves. The part that is left is bound by rules. Mindy thinks of recovery as liberation. She emphasizes that recovery looks different for everybody because we are unique individuals. Our first experience of being seen in life was related to eating. As we start to develop autonomy, if we don't feel safe, we always have food to turn to. It helps us and represents love and safety. Pile on cultural messages related to food and diet, and we end up in comparison instead of connection. We become disconnected from the wisdom of our bodies. It is no wonder that eating disorders are so common. - 90-98% of people with eating disorders today also have severe digestive distress. Children who have digestive issues, have a higher predisposition to an eating disorder later in life. It is important to address digestion and reactions to foods in the recovery process, to really allow the person to understand and reconnect with their own bodies. - I love how Mindy shares her insight into how humans heal: “Humans heal when they feel empowered. When they are involved in a therapeutic partnership with a practitioner who knows how to listen. We can become the masters of our own healing.” She wishes she could get the decades of her life back that she gave up to the scale and the image she thought she needed to project. Now she helps others find the sacred space of solitude in themselves where there is no fear. - If you are someone you know is struggling with eating or your relationship with food, please listen in to this episode. To know that there is another way of supporting you through the process of recovery can be empowering itself. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/616/29 The book of Galatians is one gigantic, supernatural, prophetic love letter to the church. It has come from the very throne of God inspired by the Holy Spirit. God's love for us is found in the reality of the freedom we are privileged to possess in Christ. This freedom is a prophetic promise that was foreshadowed in the Old Testament. The circumstances surrounding the birth of Isaac were in prophetic anticipation of God's provision in the future. God PROMISED that he would provide salvation to the whole world through his prophetic offspring. Isaac served as a picture of the future fulfillment of God's promise. Jesus entered this world as the completed fulfillment of God's promise. All who put their faith and trust in Christ will now inherit eternal life. This is God's prophetic promise to all who will bow and receive.

Diet culture tells us “eat this, don't eat that,” while anti-diet culture too often says, “eat whatever you want” even if it's inflammatory and can feed health problems in the name of body positivity. Though at opposite ends of the spectrum, both embody rules that keep us disconnected from the cues our bodies are actually giving us about the foods we eat. In truth, diets and anti-diets trickle into all facets of our relationship with food, forming a belief system about what we should or shouldn't put in our bodies based on someone else's experiences. What if that “all foods” anti-diet makes you feel crappy later? What if your Whole30, intermittent fasting, paleo, AIP, keto, whatever diet makes you feel anxious, depressed or fill in the blank? Our bodies are unique and so are our needs and responses to different foods. What if instead we slowed down and really listened to our bodies? What if we rewrote our stories with food and empowered ourselves to make choices based on how a particular food feels in our body? I brought my dear friend and colleague Mindy Gorman-Plutzer back on the show to talk about how both diet and anti-diet culture profits off of disconnection with our bodies. We also talk about the challenge with anti-diet culture and the true meaning of being an intuitive eater. Mindy Gorman-Plutzer is a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach with over 25 years in practice. Mindy's life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind-body science. She's also the author of The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You. Listen to the full episode to hear: What anti-diet culture gets wrong about intuitive eating The difference between being in relationship with your body and honoring it and restriction Why emotional eating is not the same as compulsive eating, and why it's okay to bring your feelings to the table Steps to begin reconnecting with your body and tuning in to your cues and responses Learn more about Mindy Gorman-Plutzer, FNLP, CEPC, CHHC: The Freedom Promise The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You Learn more about Sami: Eatfor.life Book Your Complimentary Consultation Eat For Life cookbooks for each unique biotype Resources: Eat for Life Episode 21: Disordered Eating Recovery with Mindy Gorman-Plutzer Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach, 4th Ed., Evelyne Tribole, Elyse Resch
