Mindy is passionate about helping others recover from eating disorders and create a healthier lifestyle. Her approach tackles the root cause of the issue, and emphasizes that how and why you eat is just as important as what you eat. In addition, Mindy is the author of The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You. In this episode, Mindy talks about her personal recovery journey, delving into the ups and downs of this road, from being in a quasi recovered place (doing recovery) to stepping into full recovery (being recovered), through deeper self-connection and self-empowerment. She explores how eating disorders become solutions to different trauma or stressors, and the way they can become a means of self-soothing, and with healing, other healthier coping strategies can be explored. Today I'm talking to Dr. Kamila Irvine who is senior lecturer in Psychology at Lincoln University. Kamila specialises in body image and eating disorders and is particularly interested in perceptual body image and size/shape estimation. Kamila completed her PhD at Northumbria University, focusing on body image and then worked as a Teaching Fellow at Durham University before joining the School of Psychology at Lincoln University in May 2019. Kamila's research investigates methods of measurement and the development of new tools of body size estimation with the use of Virtual Reality and 3D body scanning. She is also working on a number of applied projects, including a Virtual Reality-body image training, and school-based projects with Body Happy Org. In the episode today, Kamila explores her journey into this field and becoming a body image expert, emphasising the importance of 'going with the flow' and embracing opportunities as they arise. She talks about her role as a senior lecturer, including teaching students about eating disorders and body image; and her fascinating research. Kamila then gives us a whistle-stop tour through some of her (and her students') current research projects. Today I have a returning guest to the podcast and I'm talking with Cara Byrne – an integrative humanistic psychotherapist based in Ireland. She is the founder of Hike Psych – offering walking and talking therapy in nature for her clients, combining her love of nature and psychotherapy. Cara has always been fascinated by other human beings and the experiences that shape them. As a child, she was the person that people confided in with their problems if they needed support. Cara's interest and enthusiasm to support others, led her to train in psychotherapy. Cara also has her own food healing journey. Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3; this understandably led to a focus and preoccupation with food, with carbohydrates needing to be counted and portions weighed to balance blood sugar levels and to manage insulin doses. Growing up, Cara also experienced being in a larger body in a naturally slim family. Cara's family relationships were warm and accepting however she did experience some judgement and weight stigma outside of the family. In her late teens, Cara struggled with restrictive eating and inevitable binge eating, which then worsened following the birth of her first child. In the last few years, she has been on a healing journey in her own relationship with food and her body, leaning towards intuitive eating principles and finding a greater level of body neutrality and acceptance, all whilst navigating this around type 1 diabetes management. Since she began her therapeutic work in 2011, Cara has worked with a vast number of clients dealing with many different issues across the mental health spectrum however has a specialist interest in food, body image, type 1 diabetes, Health At Every Size and neurodiversity. In Cara's previous conversation on the podcast, she talked about her healing journey with food, navigating type 1 diabetes and about the walking and talking therapy that she practices with her clients at Hike Psych. Do go back and listen to that episode if you would like to. The link is in the show notes. Today, Cara is going to talk all about neurodiversity and eating disorders. She is going to explain how neurodivergent individuals can be more vulnerable to developing eating disorders and the reasons for this. Cara will talk about different neurodivergent diagnoses and vulnerabilities to eating disorders. In her practice, Cara works regularly with people who have been diagnosed as neurodivergent late and she is going to share her experiences of supporting people in navigating this, around their relationship with food. Cara's huge compassion and enthusiasm for her work shines through in this conversation. I hope that you enjoy it. Today I'm talking to Rebecca Amis - a woman on a transformative journey of eating disorder recovery and empowerment. Rebecca's life's path has been shaped by profound blessings and challenges, including battling an eating disorder. Rebecca was raised in a large family heavily influenced by a diet culture society where image, food, and perfectionism were deeply engrained values (and judgments), She found herself ensnared in a cycle that stifled rather than nurtured her However, she describes her journey through recovery being a testament to tenacity and the power of self-discovery. Currently, Rebecca is embracing a new chapter in her life. As she continues to navigate post-treatment, she is committed to reclaiming her identity. Rebecca's recovery vision extends beyond her personal healing; she aspires to create meaningful impact by hosting eating disorder recovery retreats and serving as a coach—both in eating disorder recovery and life coaching, where she can support individuals and couples in cultivating healthier relationships with themselves and others. She would also like to write a book to encourage and support others in their healing and possibly creating a sanctuary – a safe haven, where individuals can find solace, healing, and community as they embark on their own paths to recovery and life fulfillment. Rebecca has found through her experiences that healing is not just about overcoming challenges but also about transforming them into opportunities for growth and empowerment. She is dedicated to breaking the chains of the past and fostering a future where everyone can embrace their true selves and relish their lives to the fullest. In the episode today, you will hear about Rebecca's healing journey in eating disorder recovery, finding out what really has helped her heal and navigate the ups and downs of this bumpy road. We will also hear more about the plans she has to give back and to support others. It's another truly inspiring guest for you. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. Today I'm talking to Flurina Thali who is an osteopath, coach, lecturer, researcher, dancer, artist and host of the podcast, ‘The Breathing Body'. She is also someone who suffered from an eating disorder for many years - and found healing through movement, body awareness and rediscovering the fascination and miracle our bodies express every day. She calls this the sweet song of feelings and emotions. Flurina initially trained as a dancer in Denmark and the Netherlands. During this time, she encountered many somatic practices, in particular the Alexander Technique and Ideokinesis which continuously taught her as a facilitator the art of creating space and finding ease in movement by using images and imaginations. Flurina gained a Masters` degree at the European School of Osteopathy. She is currently practicing in private clinics in Kent and London, as well as working for the Osteopathic Centre for Children in London. Inspired by her own journey. Flurina has created various platforms to support women recovering from eating difficulties - and living a life beyond their wildest dreams. In the episode today, Flurina talks about her eating disorder recovery journey, delving into finding re-connection with her body and trusting its innate wisdom and intuition. She also talks about how she supports her clients today through women's circles and one-to-one work. Flurina has incredible energy and presence in this conversation. Today I'm talking to Brooke Carlson, an eating disorder therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counsellor, working primarily with adolescents and young adults and based in Minnesota, USA. Brooke has worked for a nationwide eating disorder treatment centre for three years called The Emily Program. She was an outpatient therapist and partial hospitalisation program coordinator during that time, while also running a recovery support group. Prior to this, Brooke worked at a university counselling centre, where she found her passion for working with students with eating disorders Brooke now works in private practice as an eating disorder expert and sees clients daily. She is also an eating disorder ambassador for the state where she helps with social media and petitioning for congress, and legislation for more resources and care for eating disorders in the state. She currently has her own business called Brooke Carlson Therapy Services PLLC. She also independently contracts at Wholehearted Healing LLC in Wayzata, Minnesota. Brooke has never personally suffered with an eating disorder, however she has struggled with her own disordered eating and body image distress. She brings this experience with compassion and understanding to her therapy work. Brooke has been on the podcast twice before and her episodes have proved to be extremely popular. She previously talked about over-exercise and eating disorders in athletes. Also, she last talked about the relationship between social media and eating disorders. The links to those episodes are below if you want to listen. Today, Brooke is going to discuss how grief can be a function in eating disorders. She is going to name the different types of grief and the different types of losses you can experience; as grief is a type of trauma. She is going to explain how eating disorders are a form of coping and how a focus on food and body can be soothing or numbing from grief, or even a way to express pain from grief. Brooke explains how an eating disorder can even be a way to not feel as lonely or alone through your own grief She then goes on to talk about the different griefs we might notice in recovery. For example: - . The grief of accepting that you can't do treatment alone and need a community. . The grief of "pausing" on life (school, work, etc) to go to treatment to get your life back. . The grief of realising that your eating disorder doesn't serve you anymore, even if it did at some point in the past' . The grief of life without the eating disorder. . The grief of your past self when maybe you have lost your authentic self to the ED. . The grief of losing your past body or your pre/post recovery body. I know you're going to really enjoy this thought provoking episode, as Brooke really dives into the deeper issues and gives wholehearted permission to grieve along the healing road. Why the psychology for health & fitness professionals today? You love exercise and you crave it… and most of your clients don't. We're often so far from clueless or from understanding what that feels like to be awkward, uncomfortable, and feel out of place we can't relate. We've got to earn and learn our empathy. Why I hate exercise, my summer report. It's the truth for too many of us. Since my beginning in fitness 38 years ago, the statistics have not improved. There are still too few of us exercising enough to improve our health (let alone our fitness). This interview episode dives into that psychology for health & fitness professionals. Change Behavior change is hard. And if you know that all too well, say you've seen your detailed exercise prescription fall by the wayside and clients fall off the bandwagon, you'll find a great deal of support inside the Flipping 50 Menopause Fitness Specialist course you have access to expert interviews like Dr. Joan Rosenberg, Mindy Gorman-Plutzer, Dr Sandi Scheinbaum - and more. They discuss the art and the science of coaching change, within scope of practice, and as issues like disordered eating, self-sabotage, and past failures, haunt your clients. These complimentary Expert Interviews are a professional development extra for the certification course, and a priceless resource for improving the coaching skills you use daily. Learn more about the Flipping 50 Menopause Fitness Specialist here. My Guest: Mike Kelly says he has some contrarian views related to health and fitness developed over 40 years in fitness. He has been a personal trainer, university varsity level S&C coach; expert legal fitness witness;and a master TRAINER for other fitness professionals. Despite knowing the body extremely well from an anatomical perspective, he went back to school five years ago to become Queen's University's oldest Psychology grad in the spring of 2020 – knowledge he says has allowed him to expand his understanding of the connection between psychology and the physiology, or as we know it, mind-body connection. He adopted the moniker “The Cynical Trainer” which he uses on social media and we'll find out what that's about. Questions we answer in this episode: Before we discuss now, let's talk about why you're here, what got you into providing health and fitness as a career? Why the moniker, "The Cynical Trainer"? What do you feel are contrarian views to exercise (and who do you mean you're contrarian to)? What are your thoughts on the current obesity levels? Our guest today is Mindy Gorman-Plutzer, a certified functional nutritionist, lifestyle practitioner and eating psychology coach with over 25 years of experience. Mindy is passionate about helping others recover from eating disorders and create a healthier lifestyle. Mindy's approach to eating disorders tackles the root cause of the issue, and emphasizes that how and why you eat is just as important as what you eat. Through her integrative approach, she also looks at the impact disordered eating has on one's daily life, digestion and hormones. Her life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind/body science called the Freedom Promise. She has established a compassionate resolution to physical and emotional challenges resulting from chronic and complex health issues, as they relate to Eating Disorders, specifically for women in midlife. This message is so powerful for me because I've had an eating disorder for over 20 years and I've come to realize that I've had such a difficult time overcoming this disorder because so much of who I am is entangled in what I put into my body. This message is so powerful for me because I've had an eating disorder for over 20 years and I've come to realize that I've had such a difficult time overcoming this disorder because so much of who I am is entangled in what I put into my body. I associate my worth with how I look and have a skewed view that when I eat something outside of my strict protocols I will somehow become unlovable. Statistics show that 30 million Americans have struggled with an eating disorder at some point in their lives. The most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and orthorexia. Over exercising, overeating, and using food to avoid intolerable situations are also forms of disordered eating. Many people with eating disorders go through conventional treatment, which is strict and based on managing weight and calories. It's not focused on how the person's psychology is underlying the condition, or how the condition is affecting their psychology. - In this episode of How Humans Heal I spoke with Mindy Gorman-Plutzer of The Freedom Promise [@thefreedompromise] who is changing the way support is offered for those with eating disorders. Mindy herself recovered from an eating disorder, and in the process, observed what was missing from the treatment, and became passionate about offering other solutions for people going through eating challenges and desiring the same sort of transformation. - We discuss: -How all systems of the body and mind are connected -The difference between “Doing recovery” versus being recovered -The power of story to understand the context of the behaviors -The behaviors started out as a solution; they are not the problem -Eating disorders versus disordered eating -How digestive issues are so common with eating disorders -The gut-brain axis -The benefits of supporting vagal tone -And so much more - Mindy explains that the definition of recovery is to regain what was lost. When we lose ourselves to compulsive behaviors, we lose a part of ourselves. The part that is left is bound by rules. Mindy thinks of recovery as liberation. She emphasizes that recovery looks different for everybody because we are unique individuals. Our first experience of being seen in life was related to eating. As we start to develop autonomy, if we don't feel safe, we always have food to turn to. It helps us and represents love and safety. Pile on cultural messages related to food and diet, and we end up in comparison instead of connection. We become disconnected from the wisdom of our bodies. It is no wonder that eating disorders are so common. - 90-98% of people with eating disorders today also have severe digestive distress. Children who have digestive issues, have a higher predisposition to an eating disorder later in life. It is important to address digestion and reactions to foods in the recovery process, to really allow the person to understand and reconnect with their own bodies. - I love how Mindy shares her insight into how humans heal: “Humans heal when they feel empowered. When they are involved in a therapeutic partnership with a practitioner who knows how to listen. We can become the masters of our own healing.” She wishes she could get the decades of her life back that she gave up to the scale and the image she thought she needed to project. Now she helps others find the sacred space of solitude in themselves where there is no fear. - If you are someone you know is struggling with eating or your relationship with food, please listen in to this episode. To know that there is another way of supporting you through the process of recovery can be empowering itself. Diet culture tells us “eat this, don't eat that,” while anti-diet culture too often says, “eat whatever you want” even if it's inflammatory and can feed health problems in the name of body positivity. Though at opposite ends of the spectrum, both embody rules that keep us disconnected from the cues our bodies are actually giving us about the foods we eat. In truth, diets and anti-diets trickle into all facets of our relationship with food, forming a belief system about what we should or shouldn't put in our bodies based on someone else's experiences. What if that “all foods” anti-diet makes you feel crappy later? What if your Whole30, intermittent fasting, paleo, AIP, keto, whatever diet makes you feel anxious, depressed or fill in the blank? Our bodies are unique and so are our needs and responses to different foods. What if instead we slowed down and really listened to our bodies? What if we rewrote our stories with food and empowered ourselves to make choices based on how a particular food feels in our body? I brought my dear friend and colleague Mindy Gorman-Plutzer back on the show to talk about how both diet and anti-diet culture profits off of disconnection with our bodies. We also talk about the challenge with anti-diet culture and the true meaning of being an intuitive eater. Mindy Gorman-Plutzer is a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach with over 25 years in practice. Mindy's life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind-body science. In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, I am so honored to share my very real and raw conversation about eating disorders with my friend, colleague, and eating disorder survivor Mindy Gorman-Plutzer. In this episode, Mindy and I share our own experiences with disordered eating and how the path to healing is one that includes deep empathy and a holistic approach that looks at all aspects of a person's health, including gut inflammation, hormonal dysregulation, and early childhood development. As you'll learn, eating disorders are about a disordered relationship to self, brought on by family dynamics, abuse, and genetically inherited biochemical imbalances. Mindy brings 25 years of experience to her private practice as a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. The Two Jess(es) take a look at their own food habits and get really honest with functional nutritionist, Mindy Gorman- Plutzer, creator of The Freedom Promise, a program that helps people look at their relationship with food through the lense of what food can do for us, instead of what it will do to us. She authored The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps to Stop Fearing What Food Will Do to You and Start Embracing What It Can Do for You, a book that strategically curates the steps you need to take to free yourself from addiction and compulsive eating disorders. About Guest/Topic Far too often, eating disorders are misunderstood to be a short-term phase teenagers go through and grow out of. In truth, this psychological disorder comes from a deep-seated trauma that requires support and rehabilitation. It can stick with you for decades if you simply allow it to consume you. Mindy has dedicated her life to helping men and women rediscover a part of themselves that is willing to forgive a betrayal caused by others or by their own subconscious mind, leading them to a road of recovery and self-empowerment. In this episode, Mindy talks about overcoming the fear that is stopping you from growing into the person you will be. In This Episode Discover how eating disorders become a projection of unresolved betrayal Understand how misinformation can lead to unhealthy resolutions Learn how sustainable recovery begins Unearth the power of self-empowerment Learn the biology and genetics of eating disorders Quotes "The betrayal is about how we disavow ourselves from our universally given right to thrive, to be and feel nurtured and nourished." (05:57) "Disorder eating basically comes from misinformation." (11:10) "We feel betrayal when the expectations that we're holding as a result of that attachment are not met." (14:15) “It starts off as a means of self-soothing, then at some point it becomes destructive where the intention is to soothe.” (14:27) "It morphs and, truth be told, it’s easier to think about how much you weigh and what you're going to eat than it is to think about the pain you're in." (20:04) “The process is the desire. The desire has to be bigger than the fear—the fear of who I will be when I let go of this behavior” (21:34) Resources Mentioned Mindy Gorman-Plutzer Site Post-Betrayal Syndrome QuizThe PBT Institute Group: Women Hacking Betrayal

I don't fear them, I feel them. And I let them pass through. And I have learned to give myself that space and that grace to not always have to feel wonderful. Perfection is only a perception and it's usually not rooted in reality. Thoughts on Breathing Breathwork grounds us. I believe that it's virtually impossible to be truly mindful without being grounded. Proper breathwork, conscious deep breathing, also activates the parasympathetic part of our brains which is part of our central nervous system. It regulates so many functions of our body and when we're in the parasympathetic state, also known as rest and digest, we are doing just that. Our bodies are in the flow. Suggested Resources Book: You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay Book: The Freedom Promise: Seven Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What Food Will Do FOR You by Mindy Gorman-Plutzer App: Calm / BrainTap Bullying Story I bullied myself for so many years. I belittled my needs. I bullied myself into believing that I wasn't enough as I was. I bullied myself in such a way that belittled my needs for food and proper nourishment. I thought that I could buy my ‘enough', by denying myself. That for me was a form of bullying and self-betrayal. It wasn't until I went through that dark period that brought me to this period of light and self-discovery did I realize that until I found my enough and reclaimed it. As I said in the book, the freshly baked brownie, the glass or two of wine, the new pair of shoes, was never going to do it. What I needed to do was to dig deep and find what I like to refer to as my sacred space of solitude where I could dig deeper than myself. For me that became my higher power, my deepest self where I knew I was safe. And what does someone who is bullied want? They want to feel safe. They want to feel they belong. If you think about the bully, the bully is really a coward. My bully was my eating disorder self who needed me to believe that I needed her or else I couldn't function. That is what a bully does. So many of us assume when it comes to eating disorders, but many people can struggle with disordered eating through various stages of their lives. In cases of betrayal or trauma, you can often hold your pain in your stomach, and this can have a negative impact on your own health. After 23 years at her NYC practice, Mindy Gorman-Plutzer has seen her fair share of psychology related eating issues. Today, Mindy is here to help us understand what betrayal in the form of an eating disorder looks like, why we do it and where it stems from, and how we can start to heal our mind, bodies, and spirit. Mindy has created a system of strategies including functional nutrition, practical coaching techniques, result oriented psychology and body-centered practices to help people strengthen their relationship with food. Eating disorders can be influenced by a wide range of factors including genetic makeup, brain chemistry, and blood sugar. It is important to acknowledge your biology and understand the trauma that may be held within your gut in order to heal yourself from the inside out. We can’t begin to forgive others until we forgive ourselves, and that starts on a cellular level. By examining your relationship to food, you can gain a deeper understanding of who you are and the story your body tells. It is time to let go of the self-sabotaging habits and start supporting your body to begin healing and empowering yourself. What is your relationship with food like? Do you struggle with disordered eating? Let us know in the comments section on the episode page! In This Episode Common signs and symptoms of disordered eating The biological genetic component that may be affecting your hunger hormones Physical and psychological implications of eating disorders How to gain insight into what is dysfunctional in your body's messages Why food can start off as self-soothing and end up as self-sabotaging Quotes “Wanting to change our weight, manage our bodies, often shows up in the guise of an eating disorder. Because it starts out as a solution to a problem that is believed to be intolerable.” (3:03) “The betrayal is about how we disavow ourselves from our universally given right to thrive.” (6:06) “Food is going to be the component that is acted out with. So for somebody who has suffered trauma, they are going to choose to check out of their bodies.” (13:28) “When we can develop tools and strategies to manage that split off part of ourselves, sustainable recovery begins, and that is when we feel empowered.” (18:29) “Change is about doing, transformation is about being. And I believe that no matter what we are dealing with in our lives, that is painful and feels like a betrayal, we can come home to ourselves.” (26:53) Links The Freedom Promise website The Freedom Promise Book Contact Mindy at mindy@thefreedompromise.com - Don't forget the subject line ‘End the Betrayal’ Check out the full show notes for this episode Women Hacking Betrayal Facebook Group Have you taken the Post-Betrayal Quiz yet?
