Today, I'm talking to Mindy Gorman-Plutzer, Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. Mindy's life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind/body science. Mindy is passionate about helping others recover from eating disorders and create a healthier lifestyle. Her approach tackles the root cause of the issue, and emphasizes that how and why you eat is just as important as what you eat. In addition, Mindy is the author of The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You. In this episode, Mindy talks about her personal recovery journey, delving into the ups and downs of this road, from being in a quasi recovered place (doing recovery) to stepping into full recovery (being recovered), through deeper self-connection and self-empowerment. She explores how eating disorders become solutions to different trauma or stressors, and the way they can become a means of self-soothing, and with healing, other healthier coping strategies can be explored. This is an inspiring and encouraging episode, as Mindy radiates passion, enthusiasm and deep caring for her clients and people healing from eating disorders. It gives hope for recovery and regaining and taking back what was lost through the illness. I hope that you enjoy the episode. Happy Satiated Saturday! I've been reading more research than I have in years because of my PhD and it is connecting so many dots. Research confirming how much changes in your body due to trauma. Research showing the connection between brain alterations after a traumatic event that fuels your food behaviors. Research revealing not only is what and when you eat a reaction to what is happening inside your body, but also that what you eat can increase or decrease your food coping mechanisms.I'll be sharing more in future podcast episodes and today I'm excited to have a returning guest to the podcast. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Michelle Brown, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Clinical Herbalist, about: the biology of traumawhat happens to the nervous system after a traumatic experiencenutrient deficiencies that occur when living in a trauma responseherbal resources for nervous system regulationcreating nervous system regulation routinesand so much more! You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/healing-trauma-through-nutritionThe next class of the Somatic Eating® Program starts in 16 days!!! This week Tee is excited to welcome Allison Samon. Allison is a Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner who works with clients to overcome chronic illness, escape mystery symptoms, and help redesign their lifestyle so they can be fit, energized, and pain-free in ways that are easy, fun, and sustainable. Allison struggled with unexplained chronic pain for over 10 years and in this episode, she shares her personal story of struggling with unexplained chronic pain, hormonal imbalances, and other health issues. Through countless doctor visits and ineffective treatments, she finally discovered the transformative power of nutrition. By making significant dietary changes, starting with eliminating orange juice, Allison began to heal. In this episode, She also emphasizes that the right foods can provide the body with the necessary tools to heal, contrary to the belief that only medications can offer relief. This episode also underscores the importance of listening to one's body and making mindful choices about food and lifestyle for overall well-being. Additionally, Allison talks about her journey to becoming a functional nutritionist and the ways she currently helps others recover from chronic illnesses. The discussion sheds light on common misconceptions about health, such as the misleading benefits of fat-free diets, and highlights how small changes in diet and environment can have a significant impact on overall health. Listeners will also learn about the importance of gut health, the prevalence of environmental toxins, and the role of a personalized nutrition strategy for optimal health. __________________________ Connect with Allison: Website Instagram Facebook Youtube Free Guide __________________________ Follow Therese "Tee" Forton-Barnes and The Green Living Gurus: Tee's Organics - Therese's Healthy Products for You and Your Home: Check out these incredible products made only with purified water, seven essential oils, and vinegar. We're digging into recovering from chronic illness while TTC. The conventional medicine approach for dealing with chronic illness and autoimmune disease is to prescribe medication. This approach has us chasing symptoms and does not address the underlying cause. One of the themes we see with low AMH and high FSH is autoimmunity. One autoimmune disease will predispose you to another autoimmune disease. We see so many people who have a chronic illness or autoimmunity and have been referred to IVF or donor eggs, and the retrieval or transfer has failed. It is not about pushing your body and doing another IVF. We've been led to believe that IVF is the fast track. The real fast track addresses your health, so a functional approach is uniquely positioned to optimize pregnancy success. Today, I'm excited to welcome Allison Samon to the podcast. Happy Satiated Saturday! It's been a slow awakening for me over the years to realize that food can only take me so far. Before I embraced my sensitivities, I thought that if I could just practice every "self care" thing, like eating perfectly, getting outside, socializing, moving my body regularly, that I could "fix" the sensitive body I was born with. What I have seen within myself and those I have worked with is that when you stop fighting your body and start listening to it is when some major shifts can occur. You can work with your body instead of perhaps seeing it as the enemy that is working against you. Sometimes, what it has to tell you is that something is out of balance that needs way more support than what you can provide it on your own.In this week's episode, I talk with Michelle Brown, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Herbalist, about what neurotransmitters are, how they get low in the body, how low neurotransmitters are connected to your binge and emotional eating, and what you can explore to bring your neurotransmitters back into balance. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/trauma-nervous-system-dysregulation-low-neurotransmitters-and-emotional-eatingIf you have been loving the Satiated Podcast and would like to support it more, here are a few ways you can do that:Become a supporter of the show! I am joined by Andrea Nakayama, an internationally-known Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and speaker who is leading a movement to transform the health industry into a system that WORKS, empowering patients and practitioners alike with the systems and tools of Functional Nutrition. Andrea is celebrated as a leader in the field of Functional Nutrition because of her unique ability to teach and inspire practitioners and patients alike. Andrea synthesizes art and science, empathy and physiology, intuition and problem solving, into a system that truly helps people get to the root cause of their illness, create a path towards wellness, and find their way back to life. Andrea joins us to discuss the power of purpose with passion throughout the life cycle. I started studying with functional nutritionist and lifestyle practitioner Andrea Nakayama in 2016, and I'm thrilled to have her on the show to share her framework and perspective on purpose. Andrea dives into ‘The 5 P's': passion, permission, purpose, persistence, and perseverance. She illustrates the interconnected nature of these five concepts and gives examples of how to implement them into your journey of feeling younger while growing older. When it comes to purpose, there's an effect called the positive psychological construct that has a profound effect on our mental health and cognition as we age. It can be challenging to look within and process the ebbs and flow of life. Andrea shares some helpful exercises that can support the practice of listening in without judgment and finding out what really lights you up. Part of that process involves appreciating your past and stepping into the love that you deserve. We're often taught to sacrifice our boundaries in order to please other people. We discuss examples of what that has looked like in our lives and how we choose to practice radical self-care instead. Listen in to hear more of Andrea's wisdom on purpose and graciously taking care of yourself as you age. If you are enjoying these conversations, please subscribe and spread the love by leaving a review and sharing it with your friends.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform. Topics Covered:Why it's essential to allow yourself to sit in a place of witnessing Listening to what comes up with curiosity, not judgment Letting go of perfectionism and allowing yourself to be a beginner Resisting what puts us on the trajectory of seeking external validation and answers Creating and upholding beautiful boundaries Honoring yourself when your limits are being testing Connect with Andrea: InstagramFunctional Nutrition Alliance Website15-Minute Matrix PodcastGet in Touch: My WebsiteInstagramSpecial offers: Join me for the Magnesium 30-Day Foot Soak Ritual, starting November 1st! What is a radically neutral approach to nutrition and health? It's an approach rooted in compassion and intuition and it's changing thousands of people's lives. Meet Michelle Shapiro, a Holistic Registered Dietician and Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner who helps people use functional nutrition to heal gut issues, reverse anxiety, and approach weight lovingly. At the root of her practice is, you guessed it, compassion and intuition. In this discussion, Chase and Michelle break down a few controversial health topics along with what we can do to empower ourselves to have greater health. Michelle shares her thoughts on the effects of diet culture and anti-diet culture, fasting, intuitive eating, and functional nutrition practices that actually work for human beings. She also speaks on the relationship between body positivity, body image, physical health, and mental health. This is a very insightful episode you certainly won't want to skip over! Follow Michelle Shapiro @michelleshapirord Visit her website Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights Michelle sheds light on the role of “new-ancient” health and wellness modalities and the rising anti-diet culture movement. “Overtime, as we've seen, chronic illness rates in America have consistently gone up, regardless of the fact that we're putting more and more [modern Western medicine] interventions into place,” she says. How do you separate yourself from the noise of diet culture and find information that serves you and your needs? Michelle emphasizes the power of intuition and intuitive eating in developing your ideal diet, lifestyle, and wellness practices. Ask yourself questions, especially when making changes to your diet or lifestyle. “The way that I describe the body positivity movement is that it is an extreme knee jerk reaction to a tremendous amount of very real trauma after a really long time,” Michelle says. She then details the principles of compassion and coddling she uses with her clients to make health changes as well as with her opinions on HAES (Health at Every Size). Michelle shares her unique opinion on the individualization of fasting, highlighting the types of people that would benefit or would not benefit from fasting. Is fasting right for you? The amount of women who deal with disordered eating on a daily basis is stifling. These are women, and may be you, who think about food from the moment they wake until they go to bed at night. They focus on what they will eat, what they won't eat, and how much. Least of all they focus on how hungry or satisfied they are. And they'll come to you for help with weight issues that are potentially catching up with them after struggling for years or retriggered because of the changes that occur during menopause. At no other time since puberty has the body gone through such a major change than as menopause, even including pregnancy which has it's own challenges and changes. At menopause though may have the advantage of having other individual's health at stake. The midlife woman is often influencing daughters and knows it. That may make the need or desire to change stronger. 00:00 My Guest: Mindy Gorman-Plutzer brings 2 decades of experience to her private practice as a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. Mindy's life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind/body science; introducing a compassionate resolution to physical and emotional challenges resulting from chronic and complex health issues, as they relate to Eating Disorders. She's the author of The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You. Questions we answer in this episode: 03:01 What are some things you'd like health coaches and trainers to know about E.D. recovery? 07:10 How often might it be true that a woman doesn't want to change yet, how would a fitness or health coach positively coach clients with disordered eating? 08:20 What are examples of “active listening”? 10:35 A coach or trainer can easily feel the all eyes on her and be dealing with a disorder themselves. What do you recommend a coach do working with clients with disordered eating, while they currently are being triggered themselves? It's not uncommon for midlife women to be in denial about disordered eating, or to simply not recognize it because it has been a pattern for so long. When they're ready, the teacher shows up, and it might be you. This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is talking about conscious living with guest Nika Lawrie. Nika is a Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner, Conscious Living Advocate, and Founder and CEO of Health + Hustle, LLC and the Avapothecary. Nika counsels her clients on conscious living, maintaining a healthier lifestyle, and doing their part to keep the world healthy. She joins Rosanna on this episode to give tips on how High Wire Women can live healthily in the modern hustle world. You'll hear Rosanna and Nika talk about: Conscious living is looking at how we can change our daily activities or behaviors to maintain a healthy lifestyle while also doing our part to keep the world healthy and combat climate change. Research shows that counting calories doesn't work. What works is eating nutritious food and trying to lower your stress and anxiety. It is this research and evidence that contributed to the changes in the diet industry. We need to stop the negative self-talk when we're going through difficult times. All this does is hold us back. We need to rework our mindsets to a more positive one. Traditions and community connections are important, and they contribute to a longer and healthier lifespan. It's exhausting and overwhelming to think about having to make a healthy meal, or going to the gym, or getting up and exercising. We view it as one more thing we have to do. Nika implores us to change our priorities and to make the conscious decision to put our health first. How we only need to take 15-30 minutes out of our busy schedules to exercise and that will go a long way. Becoming a digital minimalist means putting our phones down and turning off all social media. Once we start removing these distractions we will realize how much more free time we'll have to pay attention to the more important things in our lives, like our families and friends. What a consultation with Nika entails. Our health is our wealth and we should make it our first priority. We need to remove the distractions and devote the time needed to take care of ourselves. Is there a difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating? The Two Jess(es) take a look at their own food habits and get really honest with functional nutritionist, Mindy Gorman- Plutzer, creator of The Freedom Promise, a program that helps people look at their relationship with food through the lense of what food can do for us, instead of what it will do to us. In this episode, we focus on coming to the table with intention and using all our senses to experience our food, and setting up healthy practices that allow us to lay down our judgements and criticism and instead bolster us so that we can trust our bodies and nourish them in the healthiest way possible.Meet Mindy!Mindy Gorman-Plutzer brings 25 years of experience to her private practice as a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. I don't fear them, I feel them. And I let them pass through. And I have learned to give myself that space and that grace to not always have to feel wonderful. Perfection is only a perception and it's usually not rooted in reality. Thoughts on Breathing Breathwork grounds us. I believe that it's virtually impossible to be truly mindful without being grounded. Proper breathwork, conscious deep breathing, also activates the parasympathetic part of our brains which is part of our central nervous system. It regulates so many functions of our body and when we're in the parasympathetic state, also known as rest and digest, we are doing just that. Our bodies are in the flow. Suggested Resources Book: You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay Book: The Freedom Promise: Seven Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What Food Will Do FOR You by Mindy Gorman-Plutzer App: Calm / BrainTap Bullying Story I bullied myself for so many years. I belittled my needs. I bullied myself into believing that I wasn't enough as I was. I bullied myself in such a way that belittled my needs for food and proper nourishment. I thought that I could buy my ‘enough', by denying myself. That for me was a form of bullying and self-betrayal. It wasn't until I went through that dark period that brought me to this period of light and self-discovery did I realize that until I found my enough and reclaimed it. As I said in the book, the freshly baked brownie, the glass or two of wine, the new pair of shoes, was never going to do it. What I needed to do was to dig deep and find what I like to refer to as my sacred space of solitude where I could dig deeper than myself. For me that became my higher power, my deepest self where I knew I was safe. And what does someone who is bullied want? They want to feel safe. They want to feel they belong. If you think about the bully, the bully is really a coward. My bully was my eating disorder self who needed me to believe that I needed her or else I couldn't function. That is what a bully does. We can feel sick, and gradually we feel better. We kind of forget how sick we felt. So, we don't connect what we're eating to how we felt. – Maria Quintana-Pilling On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I'm really excited to talk with Maria Quintana-Pilling, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner. She's a health coach who teaches live and online cooking classes, and she knows a lot about food, so this is going to be a fun conversation! Health and how we feel in our bodies is a wake up call to a lot of my guests. That was my story as well. Maria started to dabble in nutrition after being diagnosed with fibroids, and after surgery to remove fibroids, she got really serious about it. She found that the changes she made were more nuanced than some people report, but still profound. We dive into going gluten-free and dairy-free, including why you might want to try it and how to approach it. We look at the difference between gluten-free and grain-free and why to try one over the other. We talk about: Things you might not have considered when you think about gluten-free (condiments, alcohol, makeup?) How different foods work for different people, how what works for us may change at different stages of our lives, and the kinds of clues your body gives you about foods that may not work for you Why soaking or sprouting grains is important Using pesto and quinoa or rice bowl for more balanced meals Ways of balancing protein, fats and carbs that don't look like a traditional plate Why detoxes are helpful BIO Maria Quintana-Pilling is a certified functional nutritionist and lifestyle practitioner, certified nutrition consultant and natural chef, specializing in digestive and women's health issues. She received nutrition training from Bauman College in Berkeley, CA, the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, AZ, and Holistic Nutrition Lab Full Body Systems. She runs short detoxes and in-person and online cooking classes. She's is the mom to a 7-year-old son. LINKS Contact Maria Maria's Urban Spice Nutrition website with summer detox & quinoa bowl recipe Mia's Go to Rice bowls Doable Changes from this episode: TRY QUINOA BOWLS. I've talked about how I use rice bowls as an easy, adaptable meal, and I love Maria's suggestion of a quinoa version. Find links to both above. Grain bowls are very adaptable—you can use different grains, proteins, veggies and seasonings. And if you put the different components in separate bowls, it's easy to adapt for different nutrition needs and tastes. UPGRADE YOUR SNACKS. Remember that we need a balance of proteins, fats, and carbs. Choose whole food snacks with an aim to include all three. One way to do this is to add some nut butter to a fruit snack. DO A 5-DAY DETOX. A detox gives your liver a break from processed food and refined sugars and other things like caffeine and alcohol, allowing it to do its job better. The first couple of days can be really hard, so it can be usefu l to have the support of a group, but people usually start feeling better around day 3. If you aren't ready to give up sugar or processed foods altogether, try a detox. REALLY getting healthy as a family can be a big lifestyle change. But no matter how insurmountable it may feel, focusing on one doable change at a time can help you take small steps toward your big goal. A healthy lifestyle is really made of lots of little things that when repeated regularly and added together over time make a huge impact on your life. Choose one Doable Change every Sunday night — one thing that you are willing to play with for the week. The key is to keep it doable and fun! Write that thing on a sticky note or your phone so you remember it. Then put 3 things on your calendar that support it. Choose from the changes above or download a list of 101 Doable Changes we made for you. http://plansimplemeals.com/101-doable-changes/ If you are as psyched as I am to grow veggies on a patio this summer and indoors all winter, you are going to want to check this out! I have watched friends have these for years, and am so excited to have my own! (Psssst… There are amazing curriculums that have been created by the company, to make these a no brainer for schools too!)
