The New York Times reports that leading adolescent gender physician Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy is refusing to publish a nearly 10-year, $10 million taxpayer-funded study on the effectiveness of puberty-blocking drugs in children with gender dysphoria – because she doesn't like the results. The researcher admits the study shows that “Puberty blockers did not lead to mental health improvements” but she has chosen not to publish the report because it might fuel “political attacks.” Other studies around the world have received similar treatment: according to the NYT, “British researchers reported that puberty blockers had not changed volunteers' well-being, including rates of self-harm,” but the “results were not made public until 2020, years after puberty blockers had become the standard treatment for children with gender dysphoria in England.” Sharyl Attkisson is a five-time Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist and host of “Full Measure,” reaching 43+ million households weekly. Hello, friends! I have another beautiful interview for you today. It's so encouraging to talk to other women who are interested in ditching diet culture and healing relationships with food. Joanne Edinberg, my guest today, is a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and the founder of Body Wisdom Nutrition. Joanne and I actually both trained at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating which gives us a unique perspective on issues surrounding food and body and weight. Joanne's interest in health and wellness led her through many other health-related careers but ultimately her passion focused on coaching women to develop a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. Something Joanne and I discuss is how diet culture has been so ingrained in us that even the simple act of going for a walk becomes a challenge to exercise and lose weight. We begin to lose touch with what is actually a very natural thing: going outside just because it feels good to be there and to move our bodies. Joanne stresses that self-compassion is a key component of being able to heal our relationships with exercise and food; and that believing we are worthy of rest and time in nature and enjoying the nourishment of food is vital. We talk about self-awareness, being aware of our bodies and what they need instead of just pushing through a certain number of steps and eating only a certain number of calories. There is so much wisdom and knowledge that Joanne has to share and this conversation is very open, honest, and healing. There are definitely ways we can start to change how we view food and our bodies, and Joanne shares the mindset we need to embrace to start healing. __About Joanne Edinberg:Joanne Edinberg is a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and the founder of Body Wisdom Nutrition. We're all guilty of having disordered eating practices, whether it's stress eating, bored eating, calorie counting, obsession with weight, or guilt after eating. And many have struggled with this for decades. Our guest today talks more about how to better understand our thinking about food, its impact on our behavior and how to develop healthy eating habits. Today's guest is Suzy Bessett, a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Eating Psychology Coach, and award-winning producer and filmmaker. She founded The Metabolic Connection which offers a completely unique approach to disordered eating and metabolic issues. She has helped chronic dieters get off the roller coaster of dieting, disordered relationships with food, and get on with living. “It is not a quick fix. And the problem is, the diet industry sold us on that modality… and so people want that quick fix.” - Suzy Bessett Key points about health and eating that Suzy shares today: The false and unhealthy idea of “Lose weight fast” and “quick fixes” What disordered eating is and its difference from eating disorders The balance of what you eat, how much you eat, and your relationship with what you eat “It's hard because… this is my life's work. I want to help as many people as I possibly can, but I have to make sure that expectations are set properly, which is a big part of my initial work with people.” - Suzy Bessett A part of the reason why Suzy pursues eating psychology as her life's work is that having had unhealthy eating practices and metabolic issues herself, she knows the importance of healthy eating and wants to share what she learned with others. And she wants to work in a space that allows and encourages her to pursue that. Suzy is a social member of HAYVN and joins the wellness group. More than anything, she enjoys the community of HAYVN and appreciates how it promotes success for all members, not competition. Autumn Smith is the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures. She holds a Masters in Holistic Nutrition, she's a Certified Eating Psychology Coach, and a Certified FDN Practitioner. Autumn's passion for health began with her own struggles with IBS and anxiety: despite a career as a professional dancer and celebrity fitness trainer, her own health was in shambles. Desperate for a cure, Autumn and her husband Chas stumbled upon the paleo diet in 2011 and within a month of beginning it, her health was completely transformed. Autumn then made it her mission to share the information she had learned with as many people as possible. How do sleep and nutrient deficiencies interplay with each other? Are there specific nutrient deficiencies that impact sleep? What are some of the signs of these nutrient deficiencies? What are some nutrients that would provide for baseline supplementation? What are some of the foods that are nutrient dense? What are some great nutrients that would support good sleep? I set an intention before I talk to somebody about this and you kind of know professionally when someone wants to change. You need to ask them, 'Are you in the headspace right now to receive advice, or do you still just need to tell me what is going on, and do you just need support at this point in time?' When I've found them to be in a space where they are willing to receive and act upon advice, I do it in a very, very gentle way. I just say, 'Look, when you step out because I know you're just stuck in it and it might be harder to see the big picture and how it's effective, but this is not serving you. I know you have so much potential and if we could just change this one thing, I think it will help you make real progress.' - Autumn Smith Are You Stressed Out Lately? What are common myths about Apple Cider Vinegar? Why is it actually magical for your daily health routine? Paleovalley Apple Cider Vinegar Complex is a powerful aid to get organic apple cider vinegar into your body faster, easier, and without having to tolerate the taste. Lower Blood Sugar Naturally Their Apple Cider Vinegar Complex also contains four additional superfoods shown to support gut health, inflammation reduction, weight loss, and blood sugar stabilization. Unlike other similar products, they use all organic ingredients in order to avoid the pesticides and herbicides so prevalent in our food system today. They use gentle processing in an effort to preserve as many of the unique and fragile nutrients found in apple cider vinegar and these other four superfoods as possible. Shop the BEST Organic Snacks at PaleoValley Save 15% with the code 'JOSH' PaleoValley's 100% Grass-Fed Beef Sticks Paleovalley 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are the only beef sticks in the USA made from 100% grass fed/grass finished beef and organic spices that are naturally fermented. Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. When you take it, it is going to promote not only blood sugar stability but it's also been shown to improve fat burning. The number one thing that I hear from people is that it takes away their cravings so you're using it in a beautiful, beautiful way that's going to help your relationship with food too. As the apple cider vinegar complex promotes satiety in your body; it makes you feel fuller longer. There's also research on how you can use it on the skin and its impact on cholesterol. The list goes on and on." - Autumn Smith Naturally Improve Blood Sugar "As a teenager, I would often be on this blood sugar roller coaster. At that time, I had no idea it was profoundly affecting my mood. Fortunately, I was able to stabilize that and once I started studying health, I realized unstable blood sugar will also actually increase your risk for pretty much every degenerative chronic disease possible. It can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and even more. However, if you use apple cider vinegar or something similar to bring your blood sugar stability back to normal, you will have this incredible wealth of bandwidth all of a sudden. The benefits are so powerful; you will have more energy, vitality, and will even sleep better." - Autumn Smith Being One with Mother Earth "In our modern world, we think there's a pill for every ill but that's not the answer we should be looking for. Here at Paleovalley, our products like our Apple Cider Vinegar Complex and beef and turkey sticks are about sharing the beautiful wisdom that exists between nature and our bodies. Even though we have evolved using that intelligence, we have also become very disconnected from the planet. Our products like the ACV Complex focus on trying to help people come back to that. We look at the wisdom of Mother Earth and we just bring the highest quality ingredients from our planet into a version that people can use every day." - Autumn Smith Links From Today's Show 352 Autumn Smith: How To Heal Your Brain With Food Paleovalley's Apple Cider Vinegar Complex Paleovalley's Beef & Turkey Sticks The #1 Nutrient to Boost Your Mental Health 135 Autumn Smith: The Truth About Food And Mental Health Optimize Paleo Podcast by Paleovalley Paul Chek | All Is God 405 Tim Corcoran 384 Shawn Stevenson 364 Alison Armstrong 293 Dr. Jade Teta 397 Kara Collier 336 Joe Sheehey Shop the Wellness Force Store breathwork.io Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' Seeking Health - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Botanic Tonics – Save 40% when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40' Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code 'WELLNESSFORCE' Cured Nutrition – Get 15% off of your order when you visit wellnessforce.com/cured + use the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Paleovalley Instagram Facebook Twitter Autumn Smith Instagram Facebook About Autumn Smith Autumn Fladmo Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. She began her academic career with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in dance from the University of Montana. Upon graduation, Autumn danced professionally while becoming a certified yoga instructor. Hoping to combine her love of dance with her passion for health, Autumn became a celebrity fitness trainer with Tracy Anderson, most notably completing a world tour with Jennifer Lopez. While working as a fitness trainer, Autumn could see that exercise alone was not enough for many of her clients to achieve the radiant health they worked so hard to achieve. Meanwhile, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and anxiety continued to plague her personal health, starting in adolescence. Autumn's Mission These frustrations further ignited her passion and interest in the study of holistic nutrition. Through self-guided research, she and her husband, Chas, healed her IBS with the paleo diet. She then studied with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating to become a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and Hawthorn University where she obtained a Masters in Holistic Nutrition. In 2013, she founded Paleovalley with her husband and brother-in-law. Paleovalley's mission is to disseminate excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide. Autumn's commitment to health reached new heights last year following the birth of their son, Maverick.

The Power of Paleo With Autumn Smith Autumn Fladmo Smith is the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures, holds a Masters in Holistic Nutrition, a Certified Eating Psychology Coach, and a Certified FDN Practitioner. Her passion for health began with her own struggles with IBS and anxiety when her health was in shambles. She and her husband Chas stumbled upon the paleo diet in 2011, and it completely transformed Autumn's health. Since then, she has made it her mission to share the information she had learned with as many people as possible. The Connection Between Diet and Mental Health At this point in our lives, eating crap isn't an option if you want to function properly and show up to be your best self for yourself and everyone you love. Diet can have not only a huge impact on our physical condition but also our mental state. Studies have shown that dietary intervention can clear up your inflammation, and therefore the stress, anxiety, and depression that is weighing on your brain. The more we know, the better we can address that inflammation and put our symptoms into remission. Using Food as Medicine We all know that sugar and fast food don't make us feel great. It can impact our energy, mood, and emotional state. By using food as medicine and identifying your unique nutritional gaps, you can optimize your mental health with food and improve your overall nutritional function. If you have been feeling anxious or depressed lately and want to use food to boost your mood, the habits that Autumn shares on this episode are what your body and brain need. Let's make smart choices with our fork every day to improve our mental health, physical health, and total body function. Are you ready to take control of your emotional health through proper nutrition and want to gain the expertise to use food as medicine? Share what you loved most about Autumn's approach with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “Now we know that some mental health issues can start because of imbalances in the gut.” (9:04) “I envision a world one day where we have these baseline foundational treatments, and we explore them and exhaust them before we move up the ladder.” (17:37) “We always think about depression as a brain-related condition, but what they are finding now is it is often rooted in inflammation, and it should be categorized more as an inflammatory condition.” (26:16) “Nutrient deficiency is a huge deal, 95% of us are deficient in at least one nutrient, and when I work with women, it's at least a few nutrients for sure for everyone.” (39:26) “If you can just identify where your nutrient gaps are in your diet, and then figure out how to craft your own personalized nutrient repleted diet, its a pretty amazing and eye-opening exercise.” (42:00) In This Episode Learn how Autumn became passionate about helping support people through whole foods (8:23) What to do if you do not feel aligned with the recommendations you have been given for your symptoms (16:34) The top three nutrients that can help support your mental health (19:50) What you should know about the link between diet and mental health (26:00) Answers to some of your biggest questions about your nutrient status (39:18) Resources Mentioned: Join Dr. Mariza's Group Detox Program Paleo Valley Store - Use the Code DrMariza15 for 15% Off Paleo Valley Turmeric Complex Paleo Valley 100% Grass-Fed Beef Sticks Paleo Valley Essential C Complex Paleo Valley Website Follow Paleo Valley on Instagram | Facebook Follow Wild Pastures on Instagram | Facebook Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes: Essentially You Episode #288: How Glucose and Insulin Impact Our Reproductive Health Essentially You Episode #228: Overcome Burnout and Improve Your Mental and Emotional Resilience with Juliet Obodo

They find that the people who have the most stable blood sugar actually live the longest lives. When I got married, I realized just how amazing life is and so I wanted to create a tonic that would help me promote longevity on a regular basis. So I found ingredients that would first of all help bring down inflammation naturally but also stabilize blood sugar because I know it's so important and so many people are lacking it. This search led me to apple cider vinegar and I was just blown away by it. Hippocrates supposedly it and it's been used for thousands of years for so many different applications." - Autumn Smith Our Beautiful Connection With Nature "We are in this world today where we think there's a pill for every ill and that's the answer were should be looking for but our company, Paleovalley, and our products like our Apple Cider Vinegar Complex are about sharing the beautiful wisdom that exists between earth and our bodies. We've evolved using that intelligence yet somehow I feel like we have become very disconnected from nature and so our product line focuses on trying to help people come back to that. We look at the wisdom of Mother Earth and we just bring the highest quality ingredients from nature into a version that people can use on a daily basis." - Autumn Smith High Blood Sugar & Chronic Disease "As a teenager, I was on this blood sugar roller coaster that I had no ideas was profoundly affecting my mood but once I stabilized that and started studying health, I realized that it's not just fun to have unstable blood sugar because you're hangry, it legitimately increases your risk for pretty much every degenerative chronic disease there is, right? Insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and more. But if we can use apple cider vinegar or something similar to bring blood sugar stability back to normal, you have this incredible wealth of bandwidth all of a sudden; you have more energy, vitality, and can sleep better. This comes into place with all of the other factors on the wellness wheel." - Autumn Smith Links From Today's Show Paleovalley's Apple Cider Vinegar Complex 352 Autumn Smith: How To Heal Your Brain With Food 135 Autumn Smith: The Truth About Food And Mental Health Optimize Paleo Podcast by Paleovalley The #1 Nutrient to Boost Your Mental Health 293 Dr. Jade Teta 397 Kara Collier 384 Shawn Stevenson 364 Alison Armstrong Paul Chek | All Is God 336 Joe Sheehey Paleovalley Beef Sticks Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Belcampo Meat Co Botanic Tonics breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Paleovalley Facebook Instagram Autumn Smith Facebook About Autumn Smith Autumn Fladmo Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. What if I told you that organ meats (yes - liver, kidney, heart, and more...) were missing staples in our modern diet? Did you know organ meats are actually some of the most nutrient DENSE foods known to man? In this episode, we interview Autumn Smith, co-founder of both Paleovalley and Wild Pastures, and learn all about why organ meats rock (and a whole lot more)! About Autumn: Autumn Fladmo Smith is the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures, holds a Masters in Holistic Nutrition, a Certified Eating Psychology Coach, and a Certified FDN Practitioner. Her passion for health began with her own struggles with IBS and anxiety: despite a career as a professional dancer and celebrity fitness trainer, Autumn's own health was in shambles. Desperate for a cure, she and her husband Chas stumbled upon the paleo diet in 2011 and within a month of beginning it, her health was completely transformed. Autumn then made it her mission to share the information she had learned with as many people as possible: she is the co-founder of Paleovalley, an organic whole-food supplement and paleo snack food company that prioritizes nutrient density and food quality. In 2018, she took things a step further and launched her second business with her husband: Wild Pastures, a regenerative pasture-based meat delivery service. Wild Pastures makes supporting sustainable agriculture and local, small farms easy for consumers. She lives in Boulder, CO with her husband and their son, Maverick. You can find out more about Autumn's businesses by going to www.paleovalley.com or www.wildpastures.com. You can find out more about FDNthrive by going to www.fdnthrive.com.
On today's episode of the podcast, I interview Autumn Smith, the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures. She holds a Masters in Holistic Nutrition, is a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and FDN Practitioner, and was an absolute joy to interview! We talk about our health journeys and how she resolved her struggles with IBS, anxiety, and her relationship with food when she started focusing on the quality of her nutrition, not just the quantity. As her health completely transformed, she became driven to make healthy, nutrient-dense products more accessible to her family, clients, and fellow parents. As a dietitian and mom myself, it was great to chat about how out of hand our kids' snack culture has gotten and what companies like Paleovalley can do to help change it. Our kids and our own health are too often hijacked by hyper-palatable, processed foods, and accessible, real food options not only lead to better health and cognition, but they're also delicious. If you've been following me or talk with any of my clients, you'll know Paleovalley's beef sticks are my go-to snack. I always have a few in my purse or car just in case I get in a pinch and need healthy nutrition. My guest this week is Autumn Smith, the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures. Autumn holds a Masters in Holistic Nutrition, she's a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and a Certified FDN Practitioner. Autumn then made it her mission to share the information she had learned with as many people as possible: that's when she co-founded Paleovalley, an organic whole-food supplement and paleo snack food company that prioritizes nutrient density and food quality. In this episode, Autumn and I discuss the nature of kids' diets today and how parents can make small shifts to improve the quality and nutrient density of the food they take in. Kids can certainly survive on a diet of carbs and high-sugar dairy products but they can't necessarily thrive on that diet. Growing brains need good-quality protein, fats, and greens in order to function and grow to their potential. Paleovalley has made it really easy to incorporate these small shifts. Their beef and turkey sticks are packed with nutrition and protein, their bars are delicious and full of healthy fats and just one serving per day of their kid-friendly greens powder has enough nutrients to hit your daily intake of greens. We used to think that our brain and gut connection were sending each other a single message from one to the other but now we know that they are actually sending four messages for every single one. The gut and the brain are constantly communicating with each other. So, when our gut is unhealthy, where 95% of our serotonin and 50% of our dopamine is made, then our brain becomes unhealthy too. We're eating three times a day and if we're eating inflammatory foods we are creating an inflammatory environment three times a day not only in our gut but also in our brain. - Autumn Smith What simple dietary changes can create positive health results for your body's unique needs? BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Power Quotes From The Show Autumn's Three Foundational Health Steps "There are three foundational steps that I like to teach people to help heal their gut and brain when inflammation is present. Find the inflammation, make sure that your nutrient bases are covered, stabilize your blood sugar, and on top of all of that, get some tests done. It's about finding your specific imbalances and then getting the assistance to make some real positive life changes." - Autumn Smith Creating Discussions Around Nutrient Deficiencies "Many of us are facing nutrient deficiencies and we're not talking enough about what we should be eating. We're all talking about eliminating gluten, soy, dairy, and whatever else and that is great and can be very empowering for a lot of people. However, the bigger picture that we all miss is, 'What are we eating?' and 'Is this enough to sustain us?' because we need to think about how to aid our brain chemicals. That protein you eat is becoming your neurotransmitters. So, if we're not getting enough protein or if the body is unable to digest it, then it will manifest into nutrient deficiencies." - Autumn Smith The Golden Ticket To Your Perfect Diet "What it all comes down to in creating the perfect diet for you is listening to your intuition and your body because you are the only person who can design it. Don't eat something just because an expert tells you to if you don't like that food. Also if something is working for you today it might not necessarily work for you tomorrow or in the next season. We have to eat in tune with our environment and our life circumstances. There will be times where you experience seasons of nourishment that you need to move through, question, stay aware, and know that your body is going to give you the feedback that you need unless your metabolism has been hijacked with really, really processed foods. Once you tune in and heal what needs your attention, that's going to be your golden ticket to the perfect diet." - Autumn Smith Links From Today's Show Autumn Smith WFR 135 Autumn Smith Wild Pastures Optimize Paleo Podcast by Paleovalley The #1 Nutrient to Boost Your Mental Health 345 Dr. Zach Bush Gluten Triggers Strange Delusions in Woman with Celiac Disease The Baffling Connection Between Vegetarianism and Depression Julia Ross' Cures Felice Jacka Junk Food May Increase Depression Risk Healthy Eating for Growing Bodies & Minds EP211: Getting Kids to Care About Healthy Food (& Eat It Too) with Katie Kimball Greens Every Day Keeps Your Brain 11 Years Younger 341 Josh Clemente 103 Robb Wolf 275 Paul Chek The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline by Dale Bredesen Cronometer 252 Harpreet Rai Trace Elements Morley Robbins aka Magnesium Man Michael Pollan 311 Mark Wolynn Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Paleovalley Facebook Instagram About Autumn Smith Autumn Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. Autumn & Paleyvalley's Mission While working as a fitness trainer, Autumn could see that exercise alone was not enough for many of her clients to achieve the radiant health they worked so hard to achieve. Meanwhile, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and anxiety continued to plague her personal health, starting in adolescence. These frustrations further ignited her passion and interest in the study of holistic nutrition. Through self-guided research, she and her husband, Chas, healed her IBS with the paleo diet. She then studied with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating to become a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and Hawthorn University where she obtained a Masters in Holistic Nutrition. In 2013, she founded Paleo valley with her husband and brother-in-law. Pasture-raised animals living a natural life are, not surprisingly, much healthier and contain higher levels of vitamins and minerals. They also have a much more favorable omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio which is important because when omega-6 levels are too high inflammation is often the result. With such high quality ingredients we didn't want to degrade the product in the processing. While most snack stick products contain a health-damaging ingredient called encapsulated citric acid, we naturally ferment our sticks which results in a delicious, shelf stable product with the presence of gut-friendly probiotics. Paleovalley's Grass Fed Beef Sticks Our 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are made beef from happy, healthy cows. They are NEVER fed grains. Unlike most companies using the term "grass fed" even though their products are NOT grass finished - we actually care about the quality of life the animals enjoy. Truly pasture-raised cows are, not surprisingly, much healthier than grain fed cows and contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This week Mary talks with Jessica Demasi, a Certified Eating Psychology Coach specializing in Functional Endocrinology and creator of whollyhealed.com. Jessica started whollyhealed.com due to a lack of integrative care when it comes to healing eating disorders. In this conversation, we hear about how early traumas can result in dysfunctional habits around food and body image. We also learn about ways to take a deeper look at our own traumas and how we can begin to heal from them. Mary and Jessica also take a deep dive into the topic of feminism and how it has helped Jessica empower herself on her own mission. So sit back, grab a cup of tea and enjoy this week’s episode!
This week I sit down with Food Freedom & Certified Eating Psychology Coach. Jessi struggled for years with behaviors of bingeing & restricting food to the point that she had thoughts of not even wanting to live anymore. She was completely isolated, and hid her problems from everyone she knew until she finally recognized she could not continue to live a life that was consumed by her body and food. Through her own research, getting support, and becoming a certified eating psychology coach Jessi was able to overcome her disorder and find true freedom around food & her body and is now on a mission to support other women in doing the same through her online coaching program, the Food Freedom Master Class. Jessi talks about why programs like over eaters anonymous & various forms of therapy actually did not work for her long-term and gets into the science and importance of behavior change to conquer binge eating for good. She is so knowledgeable & passionate about what she does, I hope this episode leaves you feeling more empowered around food & your body! The best exercises for you depending on your anxiety level Which foods should you begin adding to your diet for better mental wellness? These are Autumn's top fave: Oysters Organ meats Poultry giblets Clams Mussels Crabs Water crest Spinach Mustard greens Lettuces Swiss chard Kale About Autumn Smith Autumn Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. Paleo valley’s mission is to disseminate excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide. Autumn's commitment to health reached new heights last year following the birth of their son, Maverick. About Paleovalley The story of Paleovalley is a love story. Autumn and Chas Smith, co-founders, met in 2007, fell in love, and married on the magical Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, CA. This year they were blessed with an amazing baby boy, Maverick. Autumn suffered acute digestive issues since she was a teenager and numerous experts failed to offer solutions that worked. Very concerned, Chas took matters into his own hands. His extensive research led him to the paleo diet. Together they implemented its principles for 30 days (eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed meats and wild seafood) and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. Autumn was so inspired that she quit her job as a personal trainer at the Tracy Anderson Method, and earned a master’s degree in holistic nutrition. Though they originally focused on disseminating information, they soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Many products claimed and even appeared to be healthy, using all the buzzwords such as gluten free, soy free, dairy free, natural and more but they were also nutrient-free; free of the minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that promote thriving health. Realizing that they had an important job to do, Autumn and Chas joined forces with Chas' brother Matt and a good friend, Matthew, and launched Paleovalley with the belief that everything you eat and every added ingredient is an opportunity to either detract from your health or improve it. Their mission is to create products that live up to their own strict standards and always prioritize health over profit. Paleovalley creates products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health. They strive to inspire people to view every dietary choice for what it really is: a profound opportunity to love and care for oneself. Paleovalley products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs. Stay tuned. Eat Well. Live Vibrant. Let Us Coach You On The Podcast! Jenny Berk received her Master’s degree in Psychology and Education and is a Certified Eating Psychology Coach, Body Image Mentor, International Speaker, and best selling author of the new release The Body Image Blueprint. Prior to starting her coaching program, Jenny worked for over 13 years as a health educator for a weight management company. While she loved helping people with their issues surrounding food and body image, Jenny was against the company’s aggressive tactics. Wanting to utilize her background in Psychology in order to heal people’s relationships with food rather than focus on weight loss, Jenny went on to get certificates from the Institute for the Psychology of Eating and Mindfulness-based Eatingness Awareness training. In this episode, Jenny Eden Berk's talking about our bodies; the power of accepting who we are right now; working towards making our bodies healthier; and allowing ourselves to experience pleasure. Jenny Eden Berk is a Certified Eating Psychology Coach, Body image mentor, International Speaker and Best selling Author of the new release, "The Body Image Blueprint." She is the founder of Jenny Eden Coaching, a practice devoted to helping women, men and teens heal their relationship with food and their bodies. She specializes in unique binge eating cessation techniques and mindful eating practices. She resides in Boston with her husband and 3 young daughters. In addition to coaching and writing she loves to cook, entertain, travel, as well as practice hot yoga and kettlebell training. A few things we talked about: Realize that your body is the vessel that makes you able to feel pleasure and good things. Know that our bodies are here for a reason, and that each part has a place in our lives. Think about the one body part you are upset about, and think of the good things that come from that. For example, if your belly isn't the same that it was before you had kids and it bothers you, remember you are that way because of your ability to have had your children. It's time to make peace with those parts of your body that make you feel bad. Pleasure is surrounded by conflict, but when you let go of the conflict, and tap into pleasurable sensations, you can experience great things with your body. Jenny Recommends: Embodiment - Agree to be in the body you have. Let yourself feel the spectrum of emotions and sensations you're capable of. Test all the different sensations your body is capable of feeling. Enjoy the great things you can feel. There's so much more! Listen to get the rest of our amazing conversation. ------------------- Jenny Eden Berk's best-selling book, "The Body Image Blueprint" isavailable on Amazon. It's your go-to guide for radical self-reverance. Jenny's advice to moms with chronic illness: Agree and accept that this is your condition and learn how to thrive with it. Feel the best that you can depite your condition. Jenny's Superpower: Deep and whole body listening. I love giving people the gift of truly listening without thinking about what I want to say. Through her one-on-one coaching program and online courses, she teaches participants to end the exhausting hustle for food and body perfection by finding out who they really are, what they truly want, and how to finally get it. Listen in as Lu talks about: – How her parents raised her in a very body positive and food positive (and therefore unusual) way – How well her body and food confidence protected her from falling for diet-messages and body negativity – Why the messages she got in church threw her for a loop with regards to her confidence about herself as a woman – What it was that made her slip into disordered ways with eating and exercise – What we get wrong when "the diet doesn’t work anymore", and why we end up digging an even deeper hole for ourselves – What made her lose her period – Why not having a period is so dangerous for a woman’s health – Why being on the pill only masks Hypothalamic Amenorrhoea (HA) by producing a "withdrawal bleed" – Why we usually only seek help when the uncontrollable binges start (reactionary eating after restriction) – Some of the mental traps she set up for herself that made her think "she had to keep the body she worked so hard for" – Why we often fear weight-gain more when we’re at our sickest/thinnest – How diet-mentality can distort our inner compass and our true values – How she dealt with weight gain in recovery from hear disordered eating and lack of period – How she advises her clients who suffer from Hypothalamic Amenorrhoea (HA) in terms of exercise and food – Why resting, eating plenty and finding joy in what we do are essential for recovery – Why she would never wear a Fitbit or count calories again – How to deal with the internalized "should"s – How we can apply curiosity and self-compassion when our bodies change shape/size – How to understand your binges and how to deal with them – What our culture’s obsession with "eating right" is often code for – What she means when she says "the only way out is through" – What food freedom looks like and why it is liberating on many different levels – Why weight-gain after menopause is the best life-protection for you... ... Listen To The Podcast About Paleovalley The story of Paleovalley is a love story. His extensive research lead him to the paleo diet. Together they implemented its principles for 30 days (eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood) and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. Autumn was so inspired that she quit her job as a personal trainer at the Tracy Anderson Method, and earned a master’s degree in holistic nutrition. Though they originally focused on disseminating information, they soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Many products claimed and even appeared to be to be healthy, using all the buzzwords such as gluten free, soy free, dairy free, natural and more but they were also nutrient free; free of the minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that promote thriving health. They strive to inspire people to view every dietary choices for what it really is: a profound opportunity to love and care for oneself. Paleovalley products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs. Click Here To Order from Paleovalley.com *20% off with Coupon Code "WF20" About Autumn Smith Autumn Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. Paleo valley’s mission is to disseminate excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide. Autumn's commitment to health reached new heights last year following the birth of their son, Maverick. Anti-diet coach Anne-Sophie Reinhardt shares why she turned to food for comfort in childhood, how she quickly spiraled from dieting to an eating disorder in adolescence, why "willpower" isn't actually a good thing, how she discovered the body-positive movement and healed her relationship with food, why trauma is such a trigger for disordered eating behaviors, and lots more. Anne-Sophie Reinhardt is an anti-diet coach and body confidence expert who wants you to know one thing: your weight does NOT determine your worth. A firm believer that you don’t (and shouldn’t) have to wait to start living because of your weight, Anne-Sophie works with women around the globe to help them escape diet prison and make eating fun again (because life is a lot more delicious when food doesn’t rule your life). Now a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and Martha Beck Life Coach, Anne-Sophie struggled with disordered eating, yo-yo dieting and bingeing and purging for over 14 years. After a serious health scare, Anne-Sophie entered recovery and launched her own recovery-focused blog, later named one of the Best 25 Personal Growth Blogs 2015 by the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. Since then, she’s helped countless clients write new rules around food, self love, body image and life in general and has shared her revolutionary anti-diet message in top publications like She Takes on the World, Tiny Buddha and Huffington Post. And when Anne-Sophie’s not helping clients fall madly in love with their own bodies (and lives) you’ll likely find her enjoying her own by devouring a delicious book, swimming with adorable her son, savoring a massive ice cream cone (sans guilt) or (most likely) catching up on old episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.
