You know those moments where you're standing in the kitchen, not even hungry, just… eating? You're not alone. And more importantly? There's nothing wrong with you. In this short and powerful bonus episode, I'm sharing what's really behind the patterns of overeating so many midlife women struggle with, and why it's not about the food at all. We're talking about the invisible forces behind our choices, and the subtle ways we've been taught to use food to cope, distract, reward, and even just get through the day. I'll tell you what happened the night I ordered way too much Indian food (on purpose), what it taught me about self-trust, and how even wearing a glucose monitor recently pulled me right back into old patterns. If you've ever said, “I know better. Why can't I do better?” this episode will meet you with compassion, truth, and a new way forward. In this episode, you'll hear: Why diets don't solve overeating (and what does) What overeating is actually trying to do for you How to recognize the moment things start to spiral—and how to stop it with kindness instead of control You'll walk away with a different lens on your relationship with food - and the first steps to building real peace with it. Get the Tend to Your Soul Toolkit Diet culture is everywhere. It shapes how we see ourselves and sets unrealistic beauty standards that impact people of all ages and body types. In this episode, Whitney sits down with author, group fitness instructor, and yoga teacher Lori Brand. Lori shares how she first encountered diet culture at just 10 years old and how it shaped her understanding of body image. She also dives into the fitness industry's role in these narratives and the powerful shift toward true empowerment through body positivity. Lori dives into the themes of her book, Bodies to Die For, which explores the controversies of body image. She explains how chasing external validation often leads to dissatisfaction and why she advocates for women to focus on getting stronger rather than getting smaller. Through her own transformation, Lori discovered that prioritizing strength over appearance fosters resilience, confidence, and a deeper sense of self-worth. Beyond personal growth, Lori offers advice for parents on how to raise strong children in a society that is steeped in diet culture. She shares her insights on finding fulfillment and strength through self-accepted goals. Tune in as Lori encourages us to redefine beauty from within, embrace our unique strengths, and support one another in dismantling diet culture. Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal, and today I am so excited to be speaking with Alyssa Goldwater, a self-proclaimed plus-size advocate who also refers to herself as “your Orthodox Jewish friend.” She creates content for social media that gives followers an inside look into an Orthodox Jewish lifestyle and is open about her journey with eating disorder recovery and how she has grown and continues to grow to love and accept her body as it is.This conversation is a powerful one. As I said in an episode on eating before this, if you are a woman in this world you have most likely experienced some sort of thoughts on your body and the food you're putting into it. It's something we can't avoid. Even if you had parents who spoke about everything in the healthiest way, there is diet culture messaging that is pervasive elsewhere and it seeps into our brains, often at an early age.I'm so passionate about this topic because often, it's something we still need to work on in our day-to-day lives and Alyssa really helps with that and also, if you are a parent and raising the next generation it's something that we're thinking about in terms of how to teach it and we can do that so much more effectively when we feel good about it ourselves. In the episode, we speak about:-How she got to this place in her social media career where she shares so openly about her struggles-Why and how she's reclaiming the word “fat”-Why dressing for her body is so important to show online AND how it's so much more than just clothing-The difference between accepting your body and loving your body and why you don't have to love every single thing about it-How she deals with mean comments on her social media posts-How she practices self-care and maintains her mental health on a day to day basis-How she speaks to her kids about food so they can develop a healthy relationship with it — I loved her messaging here-How her relationship with Hashem has helped her throughout her eating and health journey…and SO MUCH MOREThis conversation was so meaningful, so profound in a lot of ways and honestly, very cathartic for me. I hope you get a lot out of it and can't wait to hear your thoughts. More about Alyssa:Alyssa Goldwater is a wife, mom and the Digital Influencer behind the lifestyle brand, A Glass of Goldwater (@alyssagoldwater). Merging motherhood with humor, A Glass of Goldwater has become a community and support network of more than 200,000 women across the world. By having hard conversations about difficult topics such as mental health, the dangers of diet culture, and the unspoken struggles of motherhood, Alyssa not only keeps people laughing with her sarcastic take on life, but also helps women feel part of something bigger - that they aren't alone in this crazy world.Alyssa has made it her life's mission to “take back the word fat.” Society has turned, what is a regular descriptor word, into an insult that incites feelings of ugly, bad, unhealthy, unlovable, unworthy, etc. Diet culture and the anti-fat bias have demonized every body that doesn't fit the perfect, “thin is best” mold. It has turned unrealistic beauty standards, and unscientific health standards, into a multi-billion dollar industry that preys on the insecurities and vulnerabilities of people who believe their bodies aren't acceptable. For as long as someone cannot accept, and learn to respect, the body they live in, they will never be able to live a truly fulfilling life. Alyssa is breaking down the walls of diet culture by helping women live confidently in their bodies, as they learn to love themselves again.Along with other movers and shakers in the Anti-Diet Culture and Eating Disorder Recovery movements, Alyssa is helping to redefine beauty standards and pushing the boundaries of what society deems as “acceptable”.Every body is worthy, lovable, acceptable and houses a holy soul inside. Through education, plus size fashion and advocacy, Alyssa helps women internalize and access those feelings of self acceptance and love, as they work to live full and meaningful lives. If there is someone you want to see on The Chai on Life Podcast, email me at alex@chaionlifemag.com or send me a DM @chaionlifemag. In recent years, the body positivity movement has raised it's profile, especially on social media largely through self-described anti-diet and body positivity influencers. These influencers and others like them represent a pivot away from the diet and fitness culture embodied by companies like weight watchers, which focuses on losing weight as a path to healthier living. Today there is a broad "anti-diet" movement that posits that bodies can be healthy at any size. But some are trying to co-opt this movement. An investigation by The Washington Post and the Examination found that large food companies are recruiting these influencers to promote sugary cereals and processed snacks. As people who are part of the anti-diet movement saw an opportunity to practice and spread a message of self-love and acceptance, big food companies saw an opportunity to make money. Overcoming Binge Eating by Christopher G Fairburn has been adopted by the NHS as the gold standard approach for binge eating recovery. This episode offers our personal and professional opinions on the OBE approach and is not meant as a substitute for, or a deterrent against, using this book as part of your own recovery process. There is no doubt that I disagree with diet culture. But recently I've been noticing that a lot of these things that frustrate me with this culture are starting to show up in the anti-diet culture as well. Between the judging, the internal shaming, and the “cult behaviors”, the lines are starting to blur and the cycle we were trying to break has begun to repeat itself. In this episode, I'm talking with Jessica Brown about how anti-diet culture has started to become similar to diet culture. This conversation highlights some of the gray areas that aren't discussed as often. Jessica Brown has been a clinical nutritionist for over 20 years and is the author of the mind-body book, 'The Loving Diet.' She is a graduate of Stanford University's year-long Applied Compassion Teacher Training Program, where she explored how self-compassion can increase interoceptive awareness in individuals with disordered eating. Currently, she focuses her professional time on facilitating the eight-week self-compassion for disordered eating online groups she created. Her website and social media is The Loving Diet (www.thelovingdiet.com) Over time, the anti-diet culture movement has seen significant changes, with the original values and mission statement giving way to new perspectives and approaches. Tweetable Quotes "I feel like even people who we really disagree with, we can acknowledge that everyone messes up and that that was not a good journalistic moment." - Jessica Brown "Self-compassion isn't relying on things going your way. It's saying I can be with myself in any state, happy, hurting, confused, scared, and the premise of self-compassion is how would I treat a friend?" - Jessica Brown "At the end of the day, work on your own self-compassion." - Rachelle Heinemann "We're really focusing more on the culture that's been created around all of this phenomenal help that's been really abundant these days." - Rachelle Heinemann “It's sort of like the merging of common sense and looking at the science, which is if you eat a diet that's primarily ultra-processed food, you might run into some problems. But should we say you should never eat it?” - Jessica Brown Resources https://www.thelovingdiet.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thelovingdiet/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLovingDiet Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@TheLovingDiet
If you're not in diet culture, you're probably in anti-diet culture. Diet culture is the water we swim in. If you're learning about the ways in which dieting and thinness-as-idol has harmed you, chances are you've also been embracing new ways of thinking espoused by the "anti-diet mindset." Weight and body neutrality, fatphobia, health at every size, and intuitive eating are some of the terms and concepts you might be familiar with. With this new approach comes a lot of good, good stuff. So good that we can recover in it! But what happens when we start over-identifying with it? Is that even possible? This episode looks at: The pendulum swing of overcorrecting Stef's staunch anti-diet stance Maybe it's more important to be pro-Y rather than anti-X. Are we allowed to talk about weight loss or fatphobia? Does it make you a bad anti-dieter? The community aspect of identifying with a “side” Weight loss and feelings of safety Do you feel threatened by anyone who IS dieting or losing weight? Stef's experience with her daughters Does it sometimes feel preachy? Last chance to join us in Dublin! Join the LAD Membership Connect with the show! The demise of diet and weight-loss company Jenny Craig is a win for those fighting against diet culture, according to body positivity campaigner and educator Angela Barnett.
In this episode, we discuss the two toxic extremes of diet culture and the anti-diet culture movement. On one hand, diet culture is so focused on weight loss that it disregards health and nutrition leading to an unhealthy relationship with food. On the other hand, the anti-diet movement is so sensitive to diet culture that it will throw out anything health-promoting as "diet culture" often leading to rebellion or apathy in its followers. Listen is as we discuss why neither of these extremes is a healthy place to be. Follow us on Instagram @eatwithgracepodcast Find Jacque at cookingwithjacque.com Find Brooke at brookefredrickson.com

It seems that everyday there's a new trend in diet and nutrition and a new approach to "getting slim quick". Psychologist Elaine Aron coined the term "Highly Sensitive Person" to refer to a subset of the population (estimated to be about 15-20%) who seem to have more sensitive nervous systems than the rest of the population. HSPs may be more easily overwhelmed and activated by stimuli in their internal and external environments, which may intersect with using food to help regulate the system. In this episode, we talk about: What does it mean to be a HSP? Stef's score vs Sarah's score (on the HSP test) Stef tickles her own arm in her sleep Sensitivity impact on motherhood The organizational aspect of food to regulate the impact of external chaos Do HSPs feel more sensitive to lack of control? What do we do to manage sensitivity? Food as a way to de-stimulate How to help someone who is highly sensitive Join the LAD Membership MEET US IN NYC THIS MAY! This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, a week to spread awareness hope and resources for and about eating disorders. Most people who learn that eating disorders are the second deadliest mental health disorder are surprised, so the reason there has been so much uproar in the last couple of years about diet culture and the harm it causes goes wildly misunderstood. In honor of NEDA week, Kat explores and describes the polarizing experience happening now between diet culture and the more recent anti diet culture movement. And because this week is about hope- she talks about a position on this spectrum that might be more helpful than the options it feels like people have today. If you're a health and wellness provider, you probably noticed this interesting divide among the community. This divides states that you are either for:1. Diet Culture, or for2. Health At Every Size (HAES)While I 100% do not align with diet culture and think it is one of the most harmful things that has ever come into our society, I used to think that in order to be anti-diet culture, I had to be HAES-aligned. So I was. But I'm not thrilled to be saying that anymore. Today, I want to provide some Health At Every Size criticism from the viewpoint of a HAES(ish) dietitian. If you are a HAES professional - you're probably not going to like this. That's okay. I'm not writing this to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy. I'm writing because I feel that we are missing some really huge red flags regarding the HAES bubble. This post is not to change anyone's minds about HAES who are passionate about it. This post is for those who have blindly followed suit because they were too afraid to do otherwise. This is for those who feared being called out by HAES providers. This is for all of us to start asking some questions (and subsequently seek those answers) that perhaps had not been asked before about HAES.Ready for some Health At Every Size criticisms?Learn how to work with meFollow along with me on IG @yatesnutritionRead the blog post associated with this episode

About Xena Jones Xena is a certified life coach with the Life Coach School and is the host of the Confidence Made Easy podcast. Alicia Mccarvell, TikTok creator with 5.6 million followers, known for her viral videos about body-image, rejoins Aleen for DST Thursday. To kick it off, Aleen shares her DST Win about an impromptu, but necessary form of self-care in the form of a weekend trip. Next, Alicia gives her win, which is about learning to not take any moment for granted. They then read the DST Win of the week, which comes from a listener who learned to appreciate herself for who she was and did not give an F about how she looked in her engagement photos. This brings Aleen and Alicia to talk about the pressure behind getting married and why society's beauty standards have tried to take the joy out of the *big day*. Next, they read the Dear DST that asks advice on finding the balance between anti-diet culture and diet culture, especially when it comes to health reasons. To wrap up, Aleen and Alicia have a convo about how it's okay to want to change the appearance of your body if it's for the right reasons. Learn more about your ad choices. In this week's episode of the Diet Obsessed Podcast, we discuss how to maintain weight loss once you've reached your goal. Then we review a recent episode of The F*ck It Diet Podcast, with host Caroline Dooner and guest Catie Lynch, who is a therapist and coach, specializing in Eating Disorders. Caroline and Catie dive deep into cancel culture and how the anti-diet movement can be just as extreme as diet culture. Both of these ladies have faced getting canceled on Instagram for saying "the wrong thing" and discuss the trauma of getting attacked for simple statements, jokes, being their authentic selves and taking up space in the world. While they still don't support diet culture, they also feel anti-diet culture can be just as harmful, when used in a toxic way.If you're interested in these topics, you will love this show!
