Georgia earned the bye, but which SEC team received the best College Football Playoff draw? That’s difficult to answer. The second-seeded Bulldogs are one step closer to the national championship game than either Texas (No. 5 seed) or Tennessee (No. 9 seed). However, Texas will open at home against 12th-seeded Clemson, the playoff’s only three-loss team, before a potential quarterfinal against Arizona State, which is seeded No. 4 but ranked No. 12. On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams debate which SEC team received the best avenue to be the last team standing in the CFP. They agree Tennessee received the toughest draw, but disagree on whether Georgia or Texas landed the better bracket position. Later in the episode, they react to Oklahoma’s transfer exodus and weigh in on Auburn nabbing transfer quarterback Jackson Arnold. Finally, first-round CFP picks against the spread!

Top 15 States In The U.S. For Human Trafficking Human trafficking is far from being a curable disease of human society, even in developed and first world countries. This is also the case with the US, of course. Human trafficking in the US involves both inflow of foreign people in the country and the local population. According to the statistics of the National Human Trafficking Hotline and Polaris BFree Textline, more than 49,000 trafficking cases were reported during the last decade in the US. Of all types of human trafficking, sexual exploitation is number one also in the US. More precisely – out of more than 10,000 reported human trafficking cases in 2017, around 7,200 were for the purpose of sexual exploitation. But today we are not focusing on the type of human trafficking, but on the general statistics countrywide. We have done the research for the last year on the same issue, where we included some of the worst stats for human trafficking in 2018, which you can check out in our article on 12 Top States for Human Trafficking in 2018. Getting into more detail, concerning the top cities for human trafficking in 2018, there was no any reliable information on a worldwide level, but we did research which concerns US cities, and you can read more about this in 16 Top US Cities for Human Trafficking in 2019. Concerning the previous years, on the matter of the top US cities for human trafficking in 2017, there is a nice visual representation made by Polaris, showing the map of the cities and areas with the highest density of human trafficking for this year. As we can see, situations in the top 10 states for human trafficking in 2017, or already mentioned top states for human trafficking in 2018 do not differ dramatically, which also stands for this year's situation. This fact shows that the local government does not take enough effort in preventing human trafficking cases and that this is a very hard thing to fight since human trafficking is a very developed industry. International Labour Organization estimates that human trafficking is a $150 billion industry, of which $99 billion belongs to sexual exploitation. We used some statistics provided for the last year since there is still not enough relevant data for 2019. However, it seems that trends remain more or less the same concerning the issues of the top states for human trafficking. So, we used the statistic provided by the National Human Trafficking Hotline, where reported cases were counted. Unfortunately, the number of unreported ones is unknown, so the situation might look a bit different than what we currently know. As the top 10 states for human trafficking have kept their positions over years, the same situation was to be expected for 2019 and on. But, let's see if there have been any oscillations in the number of reported human trafficking cases recently between them, and which the new incomers are in the 15 top states for human trafficking in 2019: 15. Arizona - No. of reported cases: 96 Arizona is fighting against human trafficking actively. In September 2018, 24 people were arrested for being involved in the serious crime of child sex trafficking. 14. Virginia - No. of reported cases: 98 Being among the top states for human trafficking, Virginia takes this problem seriously – it is the 6th state in the country when it comes to solving human trafficking cases. 13. New Jersey - No. of reported cases: 98 Even though New Jersey now takes the 13th place compared to the 12th place last year, the number of human trafficking victims has actually risen from 83 to 98 reported cases. This is because of the alarming fact that human trafficking is on the rise in the US as well as in the world. 12. Washington - No. of reported cases: 99 Despite Washington being the first state to sign the law that criminalizes human trafficking, this state, unfortunately still has an alarming number of human trafficking cases. 11. North Carolina - No. of reported cases: 126 Human trafficking in North Carolina falls from the 8th to 11th position from 2018 to 2019. That is a good thing, even though it is still among the states which have a very developed human trafficking industry. 10. Pennsylvania - No. of reported cases: 127 Although the rate of human trafficking in Pennsylvania is slowly decreasing, it is still among the top 10 states for human trafficking in 2019. 9. Illinois - No. of reported cases: 135 Illinois has risen one place higher comparing to 2018 when it was number ten, and still being among the top states for human trafficking in 2019. 8. Georgia - No. of reported cases: 157 It seems that human trafficking in Georgia has decreased, from the 6th place in 2018, it takes the 8th now. We hope it will continue to follow this path. 7. Nevada - No. of reported cases: 169 In Nevada, as in other states, sex trafficking is at the top. And it usually concerns girls younger than 18 years of age! 6. Michigan - No. of reported cases: 176 Good news came from Michigan the last October when 120 children who were victims of human trafficking were rescued. But this also shows the alarming fact that children are most endangered when it comes to human trafficking in the US. 5. New York - No. of reported cases: 206 It seems that the number of human trafficking (and especially sex trafficking) cases in New York is dramatically increasing. The number of 206 cases is more than double than during 2016, so we might expect that New York gets even a higher position if we are to conduct the research about the top states for human trafficking in 2019, again at the end of this year. 4. Ohio - No. of reported cases: 219 In Ohio, the most trafficking take place in hotels and motels, Commercial-Front Brothels and online ad. venues, and it is mostly concentrated in the central part of the state. 3. Florida - No. of reported cases: 367 The government of Florida seems to be working hard on preventing human trafficking, even though the state is one among those that have the most human trafficking reported cases. Namely, during 2018, 277 people were arrested for sex trafficking during an undercover operation called “Operation No Trick, No Treats”. 2. Texas - No. of reported cases: 455 Human trafficking is crawling into every sphere of society it seems. News from Texas reported that an eighth-grade teacher was arrested in an attempt to traffic a child to Morocco. 1. California - No. of reported cases: 760 California seems to keep the first place in 15 top states for human trafficking in 2019 as well. Not only it precedes every other country but the number of reported cases is quite higher compared to the second top trafficking state, Texas, as we have seen. One of the main risk factors for human trafficking in California include migration and relocation, where Latinos and Asians are the main target groups. The Connection Between Foster Care and Human Trafficking The child welfare system is an important and necessary institution that protects children whose parents are unable to care for them. The overwhelming majority of children and youth in foster care placements and group homes are healthy and safe. However, it is undeniable that most children and youth who are victims of commercial sexual exploitation have been involved with the foster care system at one point in their lives. Commercially Sexually Exploited Children by State Minimally half of the commercially sexually exploited children on the streets today were at one time living in foster care or a group home run by the state. While most of reports place this number above 50 percent, the statistics widely vary. At the high end, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, the Honorable Joette Katz, stated in her testimony to the state that in Connecticut, 98 percent of children who are identified as survivors of sex trafficking had previous involvement with child welfare services, and many were legally in the care and custody of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families while they were being prostituted by traffickers. Another study found that at least 85 percent of all CSEC in New York State had a child welfare background. On the statistical low end is the state of California that reported 50 percent of children sold in California are foster care children. While the statistics may vary by report, state and city, the overwhelming evidence suggests that the foster care system is a breeding ground for CSEC. Connection Between Foster Care Children and Commercially Sexually Exploited Children There are three childhood experiences that victims of CSE commonly share: prior sexual abuse by a family member or family friend; parental neglect or abandonment; or time spent as runaways or throwaways. Sexual abuse in particular is cited as a leading cause for entry into CSE, an estimated 65-95 percent of sex trafficking victims were sexually assaulted as children and 75 percent of all sex trafficking victims were at one point homeless. Children and youth are put in foster care placements or group homes when their parents are absent or can no longer adequately take care of them, leaving them prone to feelings of abandonment. There are a variety of reasons why the child welfare system takes children into custody, but the most common are parental substance abuse, alcohol abuse, domestic violence or neglect. A childhood of abuse and neglect greatly increases the chances for children to be lured into commercial sexual exploitation. It is also what runaway, throwaway and foster care children have in common. When asked, “What is the typical victim [of CSE] you come across?” FBI Agent and leader of the Tampa Area Crimes Against Children task force Gregory Christopher said, “A lot of these kids are foster kids, runaway kids… I'd say about 70 percent or so are foster kids. We work closely with DCF (Department of Children and Families).” Children and youth in the foster care system and those that run away from child protective services are more likely to become victims of CSE. The themes of childhood trauma, abandonment, and disruption are central to the stories of adolescents trafficked into commercial sexual exploitation. Without families to work on their behalf, it's much more difficult to rescue foster youths from sex trafficking and keep them out of the cycle.

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 7th July. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. AUDI SEES ELECTRIC CARS BECOMING AS PROFITABLE AS GAS-POWERED CARS WITHIN 2-3 YEARS - Audi CEO Markus Duesmann says that he sees electric cars becoming as profitable as gas-powered cars within the next two to three years. - Last month, the German premium automotive brand announced an acceleration of its electrification plans. - It included plans to produce their last internal combustion engine in 2033 (if people are still buying them by then), and a plan to only launch new vehicles that are electric by 2026. - A new report from Germany's Spiegel states that Audi CEO Markus Duesmann is currently expecting the brand's electric vehicles to become as profitable as its gas-powered vehicles within the next two to three years. It would imply that Audi's current electric lineup, the e-tron, e-tron Q4, and e-tron GT, are not as profitable as their gas-powered counterparts. The new driving range of the Long Range Model 3, for example, is now 580km, whereas previously it was 657km. The Standard Range Plus, which was previously 508km, now says it can only drive 448km, and the Performance now says 567km where it once said 628km. - Tesla has (finally!) decided to use Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) ratings, which have been in use since 2017 and are used to measure carbon emissions and energy consumption of vehicles. Previously, Tesla stated range figures developed using requirements developed under the Australian Design Rule 81/02 — Fuel Consumption Labelling for Light Vehicles), which was developed in line with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) rating, before the WLTP was introduced. - Other carmakers in Australia that import electric vehicles, such as Hyundai (eg the Kona EV with 64kWh battery with 484km range), have been using WLTP for some time so it is good to see Tesla move in line with this. The converted Fuso eCanter will be used for emission-free deliveries to cafés in Amsterdam's city centre. - the truck is 5.3 metres long and two metres wide, which makes it suitable for urban use. Empty, the vehicle weighs four tonnes. Two charging specifications are important for the beer transporter: The beer tank, manufactured by Duotank, can hold up to 3,000 litres, and the battery has a capacity of 82.8 kWh. - From the brewery in Den Bosch, a larger truck transports 200 hectolitres of beer (i.e. 20,000 litres) to the outskirts of Amsterdam. There, 30 hectolitres each are pumped into the two mini-tank beer trucks. These then supply around five cafés in the city centre before they have to refill with fresh beer on the outskirts again. Supplying the cafés with the large truck would not be possible even with an electric drive: to protect the quays and bridges, a maximum of 7.5 tonnes is allowed here. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/07/heineken-uses-electric-beer-truck-for-last-mile-delivery-in-amsterdam/ WARBURTONS ZERO EMISSION FUSO ECANTER - The UK's largest bakery brand has underscored its commitment to the rise of battery-powered truck technology by commissioning its first FUSO eCanter. - The 7.5-tonne FUSO eCanter is the world's first fully electric light-duty truck to enter series production and represents a major advance in the battle to improve air quality in towns and cities - The eCanter's electric drivetrain employs six 13.8 kWh lithium-ion batteries with a total power output of 82.8 kWh (66 kWh usable). The permanent-magnet motor delivers 129 kW (180 hp) via a single-gear transmission in the rear axle. A single charge gives the truck an effective operating range of more than 62 miles (100 km), which is ample for many urban delivery applications. - It sets off at 4am each day from Warburtons' Bolton bakery and delivers fresh bread to as many as 25 different customers, mainly in the central Manchester area. They range from large supermarkets to independent corner shops. In a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the Shenzhen-based company said its sales of NEVs, including purely electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, surged 192.03 percent year on year to 41,366 units in June. In the first half of 2021, BYD sold 154,579 NEVs, up 154.76 percent year on year. According to the website "Auto Insurance Quote," Salt Lake City is on top when it comes to charging stations, electric vehicle incentives, and electricity cost. - Researchers determined the "best" cities by analyzing data from the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Council on Clean Transportation, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to find the cities with the most charging stations per capita, identify local government electric vehicles incentives, and quantify the cost of electricity - No. 2: Sacramento, Calif. These standards will provide industry with guidance and drivers with a new clear definition of ‘fully accessible', ‘partially accessible' and ‘not accessible' public EV chargepoints. The design of public chargepoints is already carefully considered by operators. However, consistent standards are crucial for drivers to easily identify which chargepoints are suitable for their needs. This could range from adequate space between bollards, charging units being of a height suitable for wheelchair users, size of the parking bay and the kerb height. · Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/oojoL/ · Original Source : https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-government-partners-with-disability-charity-to-set-standards-for-electric-vehicle-chargepoints SOLARWATT FLEXES MUSCLES IN HOME ENERGY STORAGE FIGHT WITH SHELL, TESLA - Germany's Solarwatt, backed by BMW's billionaire shareholder Stefan Quandt, plans to launch a small module that lets homeowners link rooftop solar panels to power storage batteries and electric vehicles to cut costs. The wallbox allows home owners to control when and how much home-produced photovoltaics (PV) power they store, use to charge their electric vehicles (EVs), or sell to the grid. - The Manager Flex device, which looks like a wifi router and will go on sale at around 500 euros ($594), allows the integration of energy flows and gadgets at home, such as rooftop panels, batteries, electric heat pumps and EV-charging boxes. - Solarwatt, also active in France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain and Australia, aims to be a top five player by the end of 2022 - Germany is an obvious starting point. With 300,000 stationary batteries, it is the world's top home storage market, ahead of the United States, Japan and Australia. - "The ramp-up of EV sales will directly induce a corresponding run on smart energy products in the household sphere," said PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Steffen Apfel.Sonnen's CEO Oliver Koch said EVs are driving demand for the company's PV systems and batteries: "A third of buyers (of those segments) add a charging device for their EV," he said. - EV makers have started exploring links between EVs and home power circuits, to morph home and car electricity into one, and between EVs and grids, to offer stability services and recycle used batteries. For installers in Germany, the overwhelming number of installation jobs today are for both solar and battery storage. This all-in-one solution lets homeowners power their lives with solar energy whether the sun is shining or not, and nearly eliminates the need to buy expensive energy from the grid. - Germany marks the second-ever market for Enphase's Encharge battery, and Enphase will soon expand to more countries in Europe and elsewhere around the world. Homeowners can depend on Enphase's industry-leading hardware - The Encharge battery storage system offers configurations ranging from 3.5kWh to 42kWh, along with the option to upgrade and expand through the lifetime of the system. The introduction of battery storage to Enphase's existing microinverter business in Germany will help meet installer and homeowner needs for a safe and reliable all-in-one solution. Welcome back to Houston, Texas. After leaving my new friends Jeanie and Big Ed in their trailer park in Houston, I jumped back into my sexy hired sports car to see an old friend of mine, Doug Harris. We made plans to meet at his office. I got to know Doug as a Broadcast Marketing Consultant for his company Creative Animal. For the past 20 years, he has also been running Noisemaker Communications. Here, he and his team work with businesses that want to make some noise and grab some attention. Doug is known for his crazy, creative, noise-making ideas. For instance, when one of the Star Wars films was about to premiere, he came up with the idea to offer $1,000 to the first listener that would legally change their name to Obi-Wan Kenobe. That got them some attention for his client's radio station, and the idea was later copied by stations all over. And I remember him telling me about his all-time favourite publicity stunt that never saw the light of day as the client got cold feet. He represented an electric razor company and pitched the idea of taking out a full-page ad in the newspaper offering Fidel Castro $1 million to shave his beard with their electric razor. The client was worried – what if the leader of communist Cuba actually took a capitalist bribe to shave his famous beard? It's ideas like these that pop up in the mind of this man that you're about to meet. So, strap in… MEETING AN OLD FRIEND IN HOUSTON, TEXAS "Houston is a cruel, crazy town on a filthy river in East Texas with no zoning laws and a culture of sex, money and violence. It's a shabby, sprawling metropolis ruled by brazen women, crooked cops and super-rich pansexual cowboys who live by the code of the West – which can mean just about anything you need it to mean, in a pinch." These are words by famous American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson. After receiving a warm and friendly welcome from my old friend, we jumped into his car and immediately began reminiscing. Doug and I met at a NAB radio event in London years ago and ended up sharing a hotel room "purely in the interest of camaraderie and economics". Our paths again crossed in Mumbai a few years later when the Indian government had just launched independent radio. We've certainly been to some interesting places together. And here we are together again in Doug's hometown of Houston. Doug tells me a few interesting facts about Houston, such as it is home to one of the finest medical centres in the world, Texas Medical Center, which receives many patients from all over the world. Houston is also home to a fabulous theatre district, second only to New York City (when you calculate the number of seats). Additionally, Doug tells me that it is also home to the "greatest Mexican food and BBQ on the planet". Doug is super well-travelled and a man of the world. But he's also a true Houstonian. He loves his city and knows a lot about it. So, he's the perfect tour guide for me as we're driving on our way to an original Texas BBQ lunch at Doug's favourite restaurant, Charlie's BBQ. "This city is amazingly diverse. We have a huge Hispanic community and a growing Asian community, consisting of distinctly Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese communities who have found their home here because Houston is a really welcoming place. It is a warm mix of culture and people, and there is a lot of opportunity here. There's something about Houston – we do things bigger and better here." Doug tells me he wants to take me to visit Houston's famous National Museum of Funeral History and tells me some fascinating things about what to expect. He also plans to take me to the Art Car Museum because he wants me to tell the world the people in Houston don't "ride horses to work and there isn't primary sagebrush/tumbleweed floating across the streets." FACTS ABOUT HOUSTON, TEXAS No one is actually from here. If you ask most Houstonians, most of them are from another city, state, or country altogether. Houston has an underground pedestrian tunnel system. The tunnel is 20 feet below the ground and runs for seven miles, linking 95 city blocks. There are no zoning laws. You will see a sex shop next to a mansion that's right down the block from a school that sits alongside what seems to be a Buddhist temple. They don't really wear boots and hats because they're not really cowboys. The only exception is during rodeo season – when they put on the finest bolo ties, hats, boots, and buckles, they can find and totally pretend to be cowboys. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the biggest rodeos in the world. This month-long rodeo attracts over 2.5 million attendees each year. And finally: don't bother doing your hair in August. Humidity wins —it always wins. A substantial portion of Houston's population is 'new arrivals'. In this tradition, Doug's family is originally from Greece. His father came over to Texas at the turn of the 20th century to work in his uncle's meatpacking plant. "That's how things work here, this country was born from immigrants. My father managed to serve in the United States Army, after which he got into medical school, married a local gal, built up his medical practice, had two sons, and lived the American dream as it was in the 20th century. We'll see how that American dream turns out in the 21sr century". When I got to know Doug, he was always one of the speakers at radio conferences I attended, talking about being more creative. He spoke about how to spark creativity and nurture a creative environment in a boring workplace. And just one of the tricks he suggested was: bubbles. I remember the European radio conference where we shared a room (in the spirit of camaraderie and economics). He was speaking to a room of 4-500 people, and everyone was blowing bubbles. They were all over this big conference room, and people were laughing and feeling creative. I don't know; there's just something about blowing bubbles that brings out the creative kid in us. He always notices when someone is pulling off a marketing stunt that is a bit out of the ordinary. While we're driving around Houston, he points out a billboard with a great idea. Doug excitedly tells me about a marketing campaign that a local furniture store is rolling out that basically offers people their money back on recently purchased mattresses if the local baseball team, the Houston Astros, win the World Series. Our drive through the city sees us talking about a range of interesting topics relating to Houston. Although the Houston skyline isn't as typically picturesque as a European city, "I still love it here", Doug insists. BARBERSHOP BAR Doug decided he needed a haircut, so we made a quick stop for his appointment. I took a seat at the bar to get a cup of coffee – yes, there is a bar inside the barbershop, and it's unlike any barbershop I've ever seen before. The Gents Place is a beautiful barbershop that you should absolutely visit if you need a haircut, a scalp massage, a shoeshine — or just want to get away and hang out with friendly people for a bit. On their website, they write 'A Great Haircut is Just the Beginning'. Check out this video to see how cool this place really is. Alissa from The Gents Place: "We sell an experience, not a haircut. People can hang out in either of our two lobbies, our Members Lounge, or our bar, and have a couple of drinks. We do haircuts, hand and foot repairs, eyebrow, nose and ear waxing, massages, everything really. Members come in and hang out before and after work. We've created a cool place to hang out," Check out this excerpt from their website: Enjoy a place where distinguished gentlemen gather for conversation and drinks while receiving luxury grooming services such as steamed towel treatments, neck and shoulder massages, and facial hair maintenance. With our men's grooming clubs, we strive to bring back the gentleman in all of us. Life is not an errand, nor should we treat it as such. When it prompts us to attend a task with regularity, we might as well attend to it while surrounded by like-minded gentlemen, complimentary top-shelf drinks, and curated advice. Such is the path to looking our best, feeling our best, and becoming our best. BUFFALO BAYOU After Doug's new trim, we headed to downtown Houston to visit Buffalo Bayou. This lovely recreational park used to be a large ditch where the famous Allan Brothers founded a city named after the hero of the Texas Republic, Sam Houston, in the mid-19th century. The park has many running tracks and hiking trails, including the river where people can kayak and enjoy the outdoors in the middle of the city. Doug is the kind of person who gets into conversations with the strangers he meets. He's got this aura around him that says, "Hey, I'm a nice guy, talk to me", and it's not put on or fake — it's just who he is. Like, when we saw a dog in the street, Doug effortlessly made conversation with the dog and its owner as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Doug then offers a Master Class on how to establish rapport and get into a conversation with random strangers in the streets of Houston. Step 1: Greet the dog warmly with compliments. Step 2: Greet the owners by introducing me, saying that he's showing me around Houston. Step 3: Compliment handsome dog again. I'm pretty sure that Doug doesn't give this kind of thing a second thought, but I feel that this simple interaction sums up what kind of great and outgoing person he is. We get back into Doug's car and continue our way through the city as Doug tells me interesting things about almost everything we pass by — including The Heartbreak Hotel and an outdoor park that is air-conditioned. He loves telling people about Houston and showing them around because he wants people to come to visit. As you probably can sense, Doug is a man of many words, so I've got more from my drive with him around Houston in the next episode. My name is Palle Bo, and I gotta keep moving. See you.

Episode 37 begins Herzog month. A Herzog film will be discussed from now throughout September to honor our monotone deity of doc. Werner's birthday is September 5th and we are starting the party off right with his 2011 film "Into the Abyss". Ok, so it ain't much of a party movie. It's about the shattering of lives following a triple murder, and the moral question over the necessity of capital punishment. There's also stories of stabbings, bad jail-bird dads, sociopathy, vengeful hearts, and the circle of life. Bob Sham and Angela set the course back on true crime and take in the tale of a strange man (Werner Herzog) making his way through the turmoil of a strange land.(Conroe, Texas) No one will be the same when it's all said and done. Also featuring dick jokes. Keep on Doccin'®

The Milken Institute's annual index of Best-Performing Cities indicates that tech is back, especially in the world's best-known hub of innovation. The United States' best-performing metro area is San Jose, the capital of Silicon Valley. Other cities with strong exposure to technological innovation scored high in the new ranking: Austin, Texas (No. 2, up from fourth place); Raleigh, N.C. (No. 3, up from No. 14); the Washington, D.C., metro (No. 5 from No. 17); and Cambridge, Mass. (No. 8 from No. 12).

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., vaulted 50 spots from last year to No. 1, a position it last held on the index in 2001. San Jose's recovery has spread through the region's economy: For each job added in the tech sector, five jobs are created in other industries. For example, Apple has an estimated 34,000 employees in the metro area but is responsible for another 170,000 jobs in the region. "People expect tech to be one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy, and it was," says Ross DeVol, chief research officer of the Milken Institute and one of the report's authors. "A perhaps less expected highlight of this year's rankings is how the national resurgence in manufacturing is reflected in the greatly improved fortune of local economies, especially in the upper Midwest." Among this year's biggest gainers in large metros is Holland-Grand Haven, Mich., leaping 108 places to No. 40. Other Midwestern hotspots include Minneapolis-St. Paul; Gary, Ind.; Warren, Mich.; and Indianapolis. Each city moved up at least 70 spots in this year's index. The Best-Performing Cities index includes measures of job, wage, and technology performance to rank the nation's 200 large metropolitan areas and 179 smaller metros. Unlike other "best places" rankings, it does not use quality-of-life metrics, such as commute times or housing costs. In the Institute's index, employment growth is weighted most heavily due to its critical importance to community vitality. Wage and salary growth measures the quality of jobs created and sustained.
