POPULARITY

Welcome to new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER REALTERS CHOICE PHOTOGRAPHY VW WORKERS URGE FASTER EV ROLLOUT "Volkswagen's (VW) main plant in Wolfsburg might face historically low output this year and needs a faster shift toward electric vehicles to remain competitive, according to the German automaker's top labour officials." reports News24.com: "The rollout of electric car, Trinity, due in 2026 may be too late, according to VW officials. Furthermore, a global chip shortage also happens manufacturing at Wolfsburg. Due to the persistent scarcity of semiconductor chips, the output at Wolfsburg this year could even fall below the level of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic pushed production to just below 500 000 cars, according to VW's works council. VW's initial goal agreed in a labour pact five years ago was to make at least 820 000 vehicles in Wolfsburg last year." https://www.news24.com/fin24/companies/industrial/vw-workers-urge-faster-electric-vehicle-rollout-at-worlds-largest-biggest-car-factory-20211002 MERCEDES-BENZ GIVES SMALLER 60 KWH BATTERY TO EVITO TOURER, EQV "The Mercedes-Benz eVito Tourer (the all-electric variant of the Metris Passenger Van sold in the US) and the more luxurious EQV are getting a new battery pack option. Up until now, both models came with a 100 kWh battery (90 kWh usable), so is Mercedes-Benz giving them an even bigger pack for more range? Well, no. Actually, the new battery option has a 60 kWh net capacity, enabling a range of 217–239 kilometers (135-148 miles) on the eVito Tourer." says InsideEVs: "The standard fast charging function has an output of 50 kW, but an 80 kW option is also possible, in which case the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 35 minutes. Mercedes-Benz argues that the smaller battery will appeal to customers “who cover easy-to-plan routes or who only drive short distances, such as in school transport operations.” Furthermore, it should also be interesting for those buyers looking for a weight saving of 150 kg (330 lbs) and a corresponding payload increase. Last but not least, the 60 kWh battery drives the eVito Tourer's price down by approximately €3,600 ($4,175) compared to the equivalent 90 kWh model (€60,678 versus €64,248)." During the tests, the electric trucks tackled a total of 54,000 metres of altitude. The highest point of the trip was reached during measurement runs at the Kaunertal Glacier, at a height of 2,750 metres. In order to validate the trucks' performance and durability, the testing engineers at Mercedes-Benz Trucks then subjected the electric vehicles, which were loaded to their gross vehicle weight of 27 tonnes, to an extremely gruelling series of tests in the area surrounding Bolzano, South Tyrol. The Alpine terrain enabled the engineers to make particularly extensive use of the vehicles' energy recovery feature, which can be exploited by driving with foresight. Series production of the eActros will start at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth at the beginning of October 2021. The now independent battery division of the South Korean company is called SK On. With the announced spin-off, the Korean company wants to enable the battery division to better focus on the fast-growing market for electric cars and their batteries – independently of the other business lines of the listed company." writes electrive: "The plan is to expand global battery production capacity from the current 40 GWh per year to 85 GWh by 2023, to 220 GWh by 2025 and to over 500 GWh by 2030. In addition, it was announced a few days ago that SK Innovation, together with Ford, will invest in the construction of two new sites with assembly and battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky – with a total capacity of 129 GWh per year." That's according to new research from electric car website Electriying.com, which has ranked the UK's biggest supermarkets in order of EV-friendliness." reports UK Motor1.coM: "Tesco topped the list, with almost half (45 percent) of its UK superstores boasting charging facilities, while Morrisons came second with four in 10 (40 percent) of stores offering EV charging. At the opposite end of the scale, just seven percent of Sainsbury's stores offer at least one EV charging point." The investment means Octopus has attained a valuation of around $4.6 billion."£ says TechCrunch: "Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors. Octopus is now managing 17 million energy accounts in 12 countries in this manner. Octopus has also earlier launched Electric Juice, an electric vehicle “roaming network” of 100,000 charge points across Europe that allows users to charge their personal Octopus Energy account when they charge their EVs. It's also partnered with Tesla to launch Tesla Power in the U.K. and Germany." The first version of the software was created by the Audi Brussels quality management department for testing the Audi e-tron's battery, and then received further work from VW Group Components at Salzgitter, which is the site of VW's new battery laboratories. The device first checks whether a given battery is able to communicate, after plugging in the low-voltage connectors. BattMan then detects and brings up any error messages present, in addition to the insulation resistance, temperatures, cell voltages, and capacity." "In issue one of T3, we reported on the release of the EV1, a fully electric car from General Motors, one of America largest automobile manufacturers. The sleek two-door, two-seater is generally regarded as the first mass-produced EV available to the public. It had a 0-60 time of around 8.4 seconds and a range of between 70 and 100 miles – and up to 140 miles for the second generation model. (BMW's i3 will only do around 150 and that was released in 2013.)" says T3: "The EV1 launched in 1996, with the improved model II appearing in 1999. But instead of losing interest – or being pressured out of the market – let's imagine GM stuck with it…" Read more: https://www.t3.com/us/news/what-if-the-gm-ev1-electric-car-had-been-a-success NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Returns on Sunday 10th October! GM ANNOUNCES BIG NEW INVESTMENT IN 'EV ARMS RACE'"General Motors will raise spending on electric and autonomous vehicles and add two U.S. battery factories as it gambles that consumers will eagerly switch from gasoline to the new technology. GM wouldn't give details about where it will build the new plants, but Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said they would be similar in size to two factories now under construction in Lordstown, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee. Those factories each will employ more than 1,000 workers and cost about $2.3 billion." writes Autoblog: "The new plants were to come later in the decade, but now are expected to be in operation around 2025. They are part of GM's plan to spend $35 billion on electric and autonomous vehicles from 2020 to 2025. The company also said it will switch more U.S. assembly plant capacity to electric vehicles, but gave no details Wednesday." The NY Times said: "G.M. this year introduced an updated version of its electric car, the Chevrolet Bolt, that can travel farther on a full charge and has added to roomier version of the same car. A battery-powered GMC Hummer pickup truck is set to go into production late this year and is supposed to be followed by more than 20 electric models over the next four years. The company did not say where the two additional battery plants would be built. It is building them in a joint venture with the South Korean manufacturer LG Chem." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/06/15/gm-to-boost-spending-on-electric-cars-30-add-two-new-battery-plants/ https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/16/business/gm-electric-vehicle-battery-plants.html?referringSource=articleShare VOLVO TO PRODUCE NEW POLESTAR 3 ELECTRIC SUV IN SOUTH CAROLINA"Volvo plans to produce a new premium SUV for its electric Polestar brand at a plant in Charleston, South Carolina, the company said Wednesday. There is “definitely a demand for alternative drive vehicles in South Africa”, although the diesel engine, or internal combustion engine, will continue to play an important role in the local transport industry, says Daimler Trucks Southern Africa product management head Christo Kleynhans. “We will be bringing electric trucks to the South African market when suitable products become available from our parent company, and when the local infrastructure can accommodate this new technology.” This could, potentially, happen in the next five years. German car and truck maker Daimler has unveiled a number of alternative drive trucks, as well as future concept vehicles in recent months. This include the GenH2 hydrogen truck, which is aimed at the long-haul transport market, and marks the beginning of commercial fuel-cell drive development for the German truck maker. The company aims to start customer trials in 2023, with series production scheduled for the second half of the decade. According to Daimler, the GenH2 truck will have the capabilities of a conventional Mercedes-Benz Actros long-haul truck with regard to traction, range and performance. Daimler Trucks also presented a preview of a purely battery-powered long-haul truck, the Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul, which is designed to “cover regular journeys on planned routes”. Daimler Trucks plans to have the eActros LongHaul ready for series production in 2024. The range on one battery charge will be about 500 km. Also in Daimler Trucks’ alternative-drive arsenal is the Mercedes-Benz eActros for the distribution market, which was already presented in 2018 and has been tested intensively since then by customers in everyday transport operations. The company says it will start series production of this purely battery-powered heavy-duty truck next year and that the range of the series-produced eActros on one battery charge will “significantly exceed” that of the prototype’s roughly 200 km. Kleynhans says Daimler Trucks South Africa will “definitely consider” introducing the eActros LongHaul into the local market shortly after it enters series production in 2024 – “depending on the local infrastructure and availability of specific vehicle configurations suitable for a typical, local long-distance application”. While this may be good news for those local fleet owners who wish to beat fuel price increases and the ever-expanding negative effect of carbon emissions, the same is not true for the bus industry. There are currently no plans to launch the newly unveiled articulated electric (e) Citaro G bus, or the hybrid Citaro bus, in the local market, says Mercedes-Benz Buses Southern Africa head Jason Brunninger. “For now, infrastructure readiness remains key to effectively introduce and operate these vehicles on South African soil.” The range on the eCitaro G is currently between 170 km to 220 km. The eCitaro as a solo or articulated bus can also be supplied with a current collector/pantograph as an optional alternative to plug-in charging. A further variant to follow will have contact rails for charging with a fixed-position pantograph.
Daimler Trucks has unveiled its first hydrogen-based fuel cell truck. The GenH2 Truck is aimed at the long-haul transport market and marks the beginning of commercial fuel-cell drive development for the German truck maker. The company aims to start customer trials in 2023, with series production scheduled for the second half of the decade. The GenH2 Truck is set to have the capabilities of a conventional Mercedes-Benz Actros long-haul truck with regard to traction, range, and performance. It will have a gross vehicle weight of 40 t and a payload of 25 t, while it will also be able to travel 1 000 km on a single tank of hydrogen. It is thanks to the use of liquid instead of gaseous hydrogen, with its higher energy density, that the vehicle’s performance is planned to equal that of a comparable conventional diesel truck, says Daimler Trucks research, development, procurement and China region board member Sven Ennerst. The tanks used in a fuel-cell truck using liquid hydrogen are much smaller and, owing to the lower pressure, significantly lighter. This gives the trucks a larger cargo space and higher payload weight, he notes. At the same time, more hydrogen can be carried, which significantly increases the truck’s range. Refuelling time also matches that of diesel. All of this should make the series GenH2 Truck, like conventional diesel trucks, suitable for multiday, difficult to plan, long-haul transport, says Ennerst. The storage of cryogenic liquid hydrogen at –253 ̊C is already common practice in stationary applications, for example in industry or at hydrogen filling stations, he adds. This also applies to the transport of liquid hydrogen as cargo. The two stainless-steel liquid-hydrogen tanks intended for the series version of the GenH2 Truck will have a storage capacity of 80 kg (40 kg each) for covering long distances. The stainless-steel tank system consists of two tubes, one within the other, that are connected to each other and vacuum-insulated. In the series version of the GenH2 Truck, the fuel-cell system is to supply 2 x 150 kW and the battery is to provide an additional 400 kW temporarily. At 70 kWh, the storage capacity of the battery is relatively low, as it is not intended to meet energy needs, but mainly to be switched on to provide situational power support for the fuel cell, for example during peak loads while accelerating or while driving uphill fully loaded. It is to be recharged in series-production vehicles with braking energy and excess fuel-cell energy. A core element of the operating strategy of the fuel-cell and battery system is a cooling and heating system that keeps all components at the ideal operating temperature, thus ensuring maximum durability. Long-haul Electric Truck also Unveiled Daimler Trucks has also presented a preview of a purely battery-powered long-haul truck, the Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul, which is designed to “cover regular journeys on planned routes”. Daimler Trucks plans to have the eActros LongHaul ready for series production in 2024. The range on one battery charge will be about 500 km. Also in Daimler Trucks’ alternative drive arsenal is the Mercedes-Benz eActros for the distribution market, which was already presented in 2018 and has been tested intensively since then by customers in everyday transport operations. The company says it will start series production of this purely battery-powered heavy-duty truck next year and that the range of the series-produced eActros on one battery charge will significantly exceed that of the prototype’s roughly 200 km. Daimler Trucks says it is pursuing similar vehicle schedules for the North American and Japanese markets as it is for Europe. By 2022, Daimler Trucks’ portfolio in its main sales regions – Europe, the US and Japan – will already include series-produced vehicles with battery-electric drive. The company also has the ambition to offer only new carbon dioxide-neutral veh...

AUDI E-TRON JUMPS TO #4 IN GERMANY IN JANUARY "The German plug-in passenger car market was up 17% to 6,767 registrations in January, with a seismic change happening in the fuels mix. Fully electric cars (BEVs) jumped up (+68% year over year), while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) continued sinking (-26%)." reports CleanTechnica: "Looking January’s best sellers, you can see the good moment of all-electric models, with 8 BEVs in the top 10. The fully electric Renault Zoe led the way, with 799 registrations, closely followed by the fully electric VW e-Golf (746) and the fully electric BMW i3 (703). But the big surprise (or not so big surprise) of the month was the Audi e-tron, which started the year in the 4th spot with 407 registrations, a great result, especially considering official customer deliveries are only set to start in February." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/16/audi-e-tron-jumps-to-4-in-germany-in-january-cleantechnica-electric-car-sales-report/ THE FIRST HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC DELIVERED IN U.S. "It’s finally happening. BMW is reporting hefty increases in demand every month for their electrified cars and one of the most popular models is the current BMW 530e plug-in hybrid. At the moment, in certain markets, it’s also the only electrified car on sale, as the 745e is still a few months away and the X5 hybrid is also not available yet. The BMW 330e is another choice but for now it has only been announced, dealers still waiting for the first models to arrive. it now has further electric range as well as a higher electric top speed. Rather than the measly 14 miles of maximum electric range of the old car, this new one has up to 60km (37 miles), or more than double. It also has an electric top speed of 140 km/h (86 mph), rather than the old car’s 120 km/h (74 mph)." https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/11/15/the-g20-bmw-330e-is-sportier-and-more-efficient-than-ever/ MERCEDES-BENZ DELIVERS ELECTRIC EACTROS HEAVY-DUTY TRUCK TO LOGISTIK SCHMITT FOR TESTING "Mercedes-Benz Trucks has handed over a fully electric eActros truck to Murg Valley (Southern Germany)-based logistics company Logistik Schmitt." according to Green Car Congress. Stefan Buchner, Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks: "Our eActros has been out on public roads since June 2018 and has already covered more than 30,000 kilometers with its battery-electric drive. Together with customers, we have been compiling experiences of the eActros in regular everyday operations since September. Its range of 200 kilometers has proved to be absolutely realistic. The eActros completes its transportation tasks regardless of the route or other factors. The expenses involved in installing one charging station at each customer’s premises is comparatively low. There is every indication that we are on the right track with our eActros concept. " SHELL CONTINUES GREEN ENERGY ACQUISITIONS "Shell has announced its acquisition of Sonnen, a German company that specializes in home energy storage. Mostly known for its home battery packs, Sonnen also expanded into home EV charging last year. What does it mean for the industry which includes Tesla’s Powerwall?" reports Phil for Electrek: "Shell previously invested €60 million in Sonnen in May 2018. After completion of this acquisition, Sonnen will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell. Sonnen’s main product is its sonnenBatterie, a home energy storage battery similar to Tesla’s Powerwall. sonnenBatterie comes in two models, the eco and the more advanced ecoLinx, which includes home automation features." https://electrek.co/2019/02/15/shell-sonnen-ev-battery/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS!
