This morning Ryan and Tamara are sitting down with GDU member and owner of Value Garage Door Service and Pax Supply, Jesse Redinger. Jesse and Ryan are both serial entrepreneurs and run several businesses. Learn about the challenging aspects of running multiple companies, Jesse and Ryan's advice on keeping sane, and why asking what your price should be is a bad idea. Jesse started VGDS in 2012 after feeling held back while working for a franchised national garage door company. He underestimated the challenges of running a business; there are so many variables and considerations, especially as you're adding members to the team. But they've turned it into a multi-million dollar business, and the door industry has treated he and his family well, and they've been fortunate enough to be in a position to buy a second company. Pax Supply is a hardware/lumber store that supplies custom lumber packages and materials, and they're also getting into other verticals. Excited to see what the future brings! Over the years, veterinarians and the pork industry have tackled eradiation protocols for viruses like PRRS, PED, and Mycoplasma, yet influenza remains a common occurrence in the field. In this Episode, host Dr. Spencer Wayne talks with Dr. Cameron Schmitt, Veterinarian with PIPESTONE, in the 20th episode of SwineTime about Swine Influenza and efforts to prove an eradication protocol. Pig farmers and veterinarians in the U.S. are all too familiar with the warning signs of influenza in their herds. Sows off feed, minor abortion levels, mortality in GDU, and lower pig wean weights are seen in the sow farm, while pigs in the finisher will show a mild cough and off feed. Dr. Schmitt notes that since finishers have static populations, a break will run its course in 70 days; however, it is much more difficult to eliminate in a sow farm since new gilts and baby piglets are constantly being introduced. With this challenge in mind, Dr. Schmitt is working with ten PIPESTONE managed sow farms to evaluate an influenza eradiation protocol. “We continue to strive for better health. Influenza is one component we think we can make a big impact on. Our goal is to eliminate flu from a farm and make a flu negative sow unit,” stated Dr. Schmitt. Dr. Schmitt discusses the three large components of their eradication strategy which include an extended quarantine period for gilts coming in, utilization of autogenous vaccines for the specific strain on that farm, and moving restrictions.

A big part of being a game developer is being in-between big projects. Sometimes, the in-between phase isn't just a few days or months, and it can feel like you're losing steam if you're not kicking off the next big game. Regardless of the timing, there are always small things you can do to improve yourself and your work if you need/want to use that time, without instantly embarking on another years long development cycle. This talk will explore some ways Nina Freeman, an indie game designer, has dealt with these challenges personally. She'll share some ways she found to make small improvements to her career, workflow and creative momentum, without actually starting a new game project (until she was really ready!)
