Michelle and Tim have talked about this a fair amount on recent podcasts but if you're someone, like them, who tends to go pretty deep down biomechanical rabbit holes there's a tendency to “lose sight” of what we love about fitness and rehab in the first place. When Tim starts to feel that existential dread creeping up, there's three names in our field that are a surefire panacea for rekindling his stoke to train and get people moving and feeling better; David Grey, Joel Smith, and, today's guest, Angus Bradley. Angus (the King of General Physical Preparedness) is an Australian podcaster, educator, and physical preparation coach. He co-hosts the Hypeperformance, all one word, podcast which has made its way into Tim's listening rotation over the past year or so. Angus has a wide-spanning knowledge base from both in and outside of the strength and conditioning field, with a focus on inter-disciplinary over-arching principles. He works with a diverse crowd from strongman to surfing and runs regular mentorships for strength coaches and personal trainers. In this conversation Tim and Angus dive into the tension between biomechanical perfectionism a la FMS/PRI/UHPC and the BPS model, utilizing strategies for either end of that continuum to best help the client in front of you, Angus's unique take on GPP and what he feels is plaguing the gen pop fitness industry in general, guiding clients for non-chalant about exercise to stark-raving fitness lunatics, cornering people at parties to talk about the gait cycle, and much, much more. - Pat & Adrian answer questions from members of the community.- Can every workout really be modified to meet every client's needs?- What can athletes expect from a General Physical Preparedness program?- How can someone incorporate skill work into a busy week?
So what is "fitness"? Is is the ability to run a marathon but being inable to dop a single pushup? Or is fitness the ability to lift really heavy weights, even though you get winded while walking up a flight of stairs? The problem is that when we point to people who are "fit" we tend to go the the extremes of either cardiorespiratory fitness on one end of the spectrum, or beast-mode physical strength on the other end. But by doing that we devalue things like stamina, flexibility, balance, agility and so on. So instead of trying to emulate someone who might be accomplished in one of the extremes, why not shoot for GENERAL PHYSICAL PREPAREDNESS, where you are capable of more than just one thing? How about we define fitness for the average non-athlete, as having the capacity to meet your daily physical demands, PLUS have enough left over to meet any extra, unexpcted demands, or crisis (heaven forbid)? Today's episode is all about your coaches nerding out over CrossFit! We love today's topic because it truly is a big part of the methodology of CrossFit and everything CF is about. It is often the most misunderstood principal of the methodology by armchair critics, but is an incredibly powerful piece of improving your quality of life. Today we are talking about General Physical Preparedness (GPP)! We'll discuss what it is, why we use it, and how it looks when you pull apart our programming. GPP is a necessary piece of your life and ultimately will help enhance the quality of your life for the long term. So we'll talk about different ways GPP shows up in your everyday life and what that means for you. Buckle in - this is something your coaches love to talk about, love to dissect, and a lot of what our program is built on! As always, share the story of your greatest GPP impact with us and follow our socials here: FB: Facebook.com/CrossFitFUNCTION IG: @cffunction Twitter: @GotFUNCTION
Hey monkiis, I was writing out a training program for myself and made up a really useful template on the spot that I wanted to share with the monkii family. Basically, I started with three high-level categories: Goals, Principles, and 2021 Events and then reverse-engineered a path to how I would train in congruence with those three categories. My BIG 3 plans for 2021 are 1) a mountain trail run somewhere between 30 and 50 miles, 2) Climbing a Big Wall in Yosemite National Park, and 3) Backcountry Bow Hunting in September. What is so fun above setting these huge goals is that you end up doing a bunch of other fun adventures and challenges in order to help 'train' for the big boys. I wrote out a 5-week training block that is mainly focused on General Physical Preparedness, but that also includes some targeted training for the One-Arm Pullup and One-Arm Pushup. I'll do some evaluation and a few fitness tests at the end and then set off on a new journey in 5-weeks. I'd highly recommend giving this process a shot and please let me know how it goes. As promised, check out the Wildman David Goggins Instagram. If you have questions, please send a note to info@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram we can get more monkii Q&A sessions going. Thanks for tuning in and if you are enjoying the episodes we would be eternally grateful if you could leave a 5-star review. It helps to grow the monkii family and spread the good word of the Wild. Thank you. See you out there and monkii on, -monkii Dan www.monkii.co

One of the coolest things that's happened to us over the past ten years is that we've gotten toward with people doing activities and sports we never would have dreamed up. Our clients are into some really cool stuff!Rock climbing, surfing, martial arts, train running, slackline, pole dance, and every traditional sport too. And what all those clients have in common is that their main reason for doing fitness training is to get them better at the actives they enjoy or compete in. The biggest mistake we see happening is that the fitness side can begin to overshadow the application in their sport. What a lot of people don't understand is that there's really three broad categories of training when it comes to fitness for sports:General Physical Preparedness - your overall health and functionSpecific Physical Preparedness - the basic movements and abilities required for your activitySport Specific Preparedness - application to the specific context of performing in your sportAt different times in your careers (or season), you'll need a different proportion of those three kinds of training. You also need to make sure you're not mistaking one kind of training for another or confusing your body by using the wrong exercises for the wrong purposes. This episode gives lots of examples so you can get a better sense of what's important in your development and make sure that your workouts aren't actually hurting your sport performance in the long run. This week the boys sat down for a chat about General Physical Preparedness and how when you elect to use this methodology as the anchor for your programming your clientele will be pushed physically and mentally, which will help them improve, but may also push their buttons. With that in mind, from a coaching perspective, it is of utmost importance that we give each member a win each day that they come and do the workout. And if you’re one of those listening that doesn’t have a coach, it is your job to look for a win in each training session so that you can build some momentum and fall in love with the process of getting more fit, which will keep you coming back for more.Follow us on Instagram & Facebook @LionheartedPodcastCheck out the Instagram post by @WarmupAndWorkout at https://www.instagram.com/p/BxNLqltgQNe/ Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music
