Gerardo Muñoz, 2021 Colorado Teacher of the Year. Gerardo A. Muñoz of Denver, Colorado, is a high school and middle school social studies teacher at the Denver Center for International Studies (DCIS) at Baker in the Denver Public Schools (DPS) district. He has taught every grade from 6-12 and currently teaches grades 7 and 10-to 12. His classes include concurrent enrollment in ethnic studies, Advanced Placement world history, and 5280 Challenge/Student Board of Education through DPS's Student Voice and Leadership program. Mr. Muñoz has been involved in numerous programs, initiatives, campaigns, and organizations to promote equity and antiracism, including EduColor, Choose, the National Education Association's Racial and Social Justice Conference, and the University of Colorado's Teachers of Color and Allies Summit. Muñoz holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and Latin American studies from the University of Colorado (1999), as well as a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from the University of Denver (2009). Since last season, we have brought you stories that are heart-wrenching, painful, and traumatic. Examples of racial battle fatigue, professional violence and PTSD, which, even though most have experienced a measure of healing, or begun that healing journey, are difficult. In some cases, Black classroom teachers depart the classroom to make a wider impact. This was the case for Dr. William Anderson, History teacher extraordinaire, who was just minding his own business, working on his doctorate, ready to return to the classroom for the 2021-2022 school year when he was tapped to take over the Teacher Education Program at the University of Denver, the first Black man to step into that role. Dr. Anderson knew this was an opportunity to impact the profession in a more powerful way, and went on a journey to make it happen. Entre medias, miles de militares españoles sufrieron un auténtico viacrucis al emprender una retirada desesperada y condenada al fracaso. Las noticias de tales hechos, así como el posterior cautiverio de centenares de militares y paisanos españoles, conmocionaron a España entera y fueron causa directa de varias crisis políticas como el golpe de estado y la dictadura de Miguel Primo de Rivera así como la posterior caída de la monarquía de Alfonso XIII. Aquella trágica derrota del ejército español fue el comienzo de la última guerra colonial española, que duró seis años y finalizó con la ocupación militar del Protectorado de España en Marruecos. En 1921 el ejército español llevaba más de diez años guerreando en África. El conflicto había empezado en 1909, luego fue a más durante el verano de 1911, poco antes de que, en virtud del tratado de Fez, se estableciesen los protectorados francés y español en Marruecos. La guerra, de baja intensidad y organizada por parte de los rifeños en torno a guerrillas irregulares, se recrudeció a partir de 1920. En ese momento el Gobierno español envió a un joven general, Manuel Fernández Silvestre, que había combatido años antes en la guerra de Cuba para que pacificase el protectorado y eliminase toda la resistencia de las cabilas rifeñas. A principios de 1921 Fernández Silvestre trazó un plan para apoderarse de la bahía de Alhucemas, en el centro del protectorado, y fijar presencia militar constante que desalentase a los rebeldes de perseverar en la rebelión. Pero algo falló durante aquella operación. Poco antes de que se efectuase el asalto final sobre Alhucemas, cuando el ejército se encontraba acampado en Annual, un pequeño pueblo rifeño enclavado en el fondo de un valle, un lugar difícil de defender y con la retaguardia comprometida por la orografía de la región, que es muy abrupta. Los rifeños, dirigidos por Abd el-Krim, un líder guerrillero rifeño que se había formado en España y que había trabajado en la administración colonial, atacaron de forma coordinada a las tropas españolas. Éstas, con las líneas de suministros cortadas, se replegaron precipitadamente hacia el fuerte de Monte Arruit en espera de que enviasen refuerzos desde Melilla. Así dio comienzo, el 22 de julio de 1921, el desastre de Annual, una derrota sin paliativos del ejército de África que supuso un punto de inflexión fundamental en la guerra de Marruecos. Desencadenó también un formidable escándalo político precipitando el pronunciamiento de Miguel Primo de Rivera en Barcelona en septiembre de 1923. Durante dos semanas de combates el ejército de África fue masacrado sin piedad. Se calcula que murieron casi diez mil españoles y otros dos mil indígenas encuadrados en unidades coloniales. Se perdió también una cantidad considerable de armamento que sería posteriormente utilizado contra los españoles. La propia Melilla pasó a estar sitiada por las guerrillas. Hicieron falta varios meses para estabilizar la situación y cuatro años para dar por concluida la guerra pacificando por completo el protectorado. Pero Annual nunca se olvidó. Para los oficiales supuso una humillación mayúscula. El general Juan Picasso elaboró un polémico informe en el que, tras repasar pormenorizadamente los hechos, señalaba culpables con nombre y apellidos. El asunto terminó salpicando a Alfonso XIII, pero no pudo ir mucho más allá porque en 1923 las Cortes quedaron disueltas. Se corrió un tupido velo sobre Annual y todo lo que había ocurrido allí. Hoy en La ContraHistoria, justo cuando se cumple un siglo de este desastre, vamos a volver la mirada sobre aquel episodio que, aparte del elevadísimo número de víctimas que dejó, terminó por condicionar buena parte de los problemas políticos a los que España se enfrentó durante los años siguientes. Gerardo A. Muñoz, Colorado's 2021 Teacher of the Year, is a high school and middle school Social Studies teacher at the Denver Center for International Studies at Baker (DCIS) in the Denver Public Schools (DPS) in Denver, Colorado. He is the first Chicano to earn Teacher of the Year distinction in Colorado. In addition to this award, he has also been the recipient of the 2021 Golden Apple Award, the Grogan Family Fund's Inspirational Teacher Award, and the University of Denver Summit Award. He is a seven-time Distinguished Teacher in Denver Public Schools. Gerardo has taught every grade 6-12, he currently teaches grades 7 and 10-12. His classes include Concurrent Enrollment Ethnic Studies, Advanced Placement World History, and 5280 Challenge/Student Board of Education through DPS's Student Voice and Leadership (SVL) program. Mr. Muñoz has been involved in a number of programs, initiatives, campaigns, and organizations to promote equity and antiracism, including EduColor, Choose, the National Education Association's Racial and Social Justice Conference, and the University of Colorado's Teachers of Color and Allies Summit. Muñoz holds A Bachelor of Arts Degree in history and Latin American Studies from the University of Colorado (1999), as well as a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from the University of Denver (2009).
