What started out as trolling 944 Fest on Instagram turned into lots of fun banter and an excellent weekend at Nelson Ledges playing with Porsches and having a great time.It only made sense to have Travis and Cat on the podcast to talk about 944 Fest and their backgrounds. We talk about a lot of different things and we laugh a lot too. They seem to make quite a few OnlyFans.com references -that must be a site for 944 things. They have ten, yes ten 944s. They have a very cool story about how they met. Plus, they host a great event. They are published! 944 Fest For DummiesWe also discuss a sweet track event being planned during the 2024 944 Fest. The off-season is shorter than we think and Michael Ribas joins the podcast to share some ideas about how to make the most of the off-season.Michael Ribas is a performance coach (business, life, everything) and was a guest in season two of the Late To Grid podcast. Here's his episode. Here are some ideas to get you started in your off-season planning and execution:1. Take a break. Connect with your family. Relax2. Perform a recap of the season. What worked, what didn't, and what do you need to do before next season.3. Make a plan. Create a budget, make a schedule, ask for help, check your spares and trailer, measure your progress.4. Set the goal and execute.Don't forget about the who. Spend time working on you.The best advice he has received?1. Did dad said, avoid getting in a fight. If you do get in a fight - hit first! This means take action.2. Effort = Results (my favorite). Words of wisdom that Michael shares with his clients includes meeting people where they are. Where they are in their life, their sport, their career. Your advice only has meaning if it's applicable to where they are. Toby Weber started competing in Autocross events in 2014 in a Lotus 7 and has grown his motorsports endeavors to include track days, time trials and wheel to wheel racing. He also works with Xtreme Xperience as an instructor.Toby has had a stellar 2023 season including a first place in class at the 14 hour enduro at Nelson Ledges Road Course. In 2024 he plans to continue competing in the OPTT time trials, continuing with endurance racing, and working with Xtreme Xperience. Toby once thought that motorsports was only for people with money. It's important for everyone to understand that motorsports is open to everyone, regardless of money and it's great that Toby got involved as he's an asset to our sport. When it comes to advice, Toby highlights that seat time is important and people should just go out and try it to see if it's something they want to do. A big take-a-way he had from this season is to only change one item on your car at a time. Too many changes means that you can't pinpoint what worked and what didn't.Connect and Follow Toby:FacebookYouTubeInstagramLooking for track day tires? Bill can save you some money! Renting a race car is a great way to get on track and not worry about the hassle of storing, prepping, maintaining, and transporting you race car. Frank and Bill discuss the rental programs that Grass Paddock Motorsports offers and how it works.Frank Schwartz is one of the driving forces behind the growth of B-Spec racing and many people called him crazy for buying a B Spec race car. He applied his business knowledge to B Spec racing and now it's the fastest growing form of racing in the United States.Curious on how B Spec racing started? We cover it!Frank is a great example of why I love this sport. He's always willing to help others, he's interested in growing the sport, and it's all about having fun at the track. When asked about the best motorsports advice he has received, he shares a very interesting perspective. The advice was ill timed. Meaning the advice given did not have a foundation to be helpful. Wow! Think about that for a moment. As we give younger drivers advice let's make sure they have foundation to build upon with the advice we are sharing.Frank's advice to those that want to get started...get to the track as a volunteer or spectator. Better yet, crew for a team. You'll learn quite a bit.Why rent a race car?You don't have space for a race car at home. You are just getting startedYou've entered a driver's school You race three events a year - it's financially less expensive to rentYou don't have the time to maintain a race car (time vs money)Franks shares that he's always Late To Grid - and with good reason. Carmudgeons made it through unscathed! Jason's Honda Beat didn't — it wound up getting towed 148 miles home using Hagerty Roadside Assistance. Instead, the well-traveled Rover 3500 SD1 provided Jason's transportation needs. Derek relied on his reliable Citroën CX. The week is a nonstop celebration of cars, with literal dozens of events from manufacturer debuts and parties to single-marque car shows like the Werks Porsche Reunion to single-country shows like Legends of the Autobahn or Concorso Italiano. Then, of course, there's the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, the Little Car Show, the Grassroots Motorsports kickoff party, Motorlux at the Monterey Jet Center, auctions by Broad Arrow, RM Sotheby's, Gooding, and Barrett-Jackson — to name just a few. And that's not even mentioning the Concours itself, or the 2 weeks of nonstop vintage racing at Laguna Seca. It's impossible to see even half of the events during car week — but here's a guide to surviving the most amazing car week of the year. == The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. Bill interviews Manfred Woodall who became interested in motorsports through the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix when he was 13. Manfred bought a Honda S2000 and started autocrossing. He then campaigned a Pontiac GXP Soltice. Then in 2018 he hunted down a Camaro to get back involved.Manfred talks about how he loves being at the track and the motorsports community. He also shares the news he received earlier this year regarding a cancer diagnosis. The great news is that he fought and won! This serves as a great reminder that men need to get their PSA test (prostate-specific antigen test).Manfred provides an interesting perspective that motorsports doesn't have to be obsessive as sometimes competition can sometimes overrun life. I am glad he shares this as I believe that some people get scared off thinking that it has to be all-encompassing, which it doesn't. Being at the track should be fun.Advice shared:Slow down to go fastLook and anticipate Have a routineWhat's next for Manfred? How cool is it that I have Ross Bentley on the Late To Grid podcast to talk about his motorsports background? Very cool I think!Ross is a driver coach for high-performance and race drivers. He loves to help drivers of all levels and types with not just the physical aspect of performance driving, but also the mental game. Ross's coaching services include; in-person 1-on-1 and group coaching, as well as seminars and workshops; also online webinars, training videos, and through writing books and articles.Like many of my guests, Ross's family introduced him to motorsports. Ross went to racing school and his first season was a modified car on an oval track and then got into road racing. He was always looking to get to the next level. He found that he really enjoyed helping others and figured out a way to get paid for it which helped him fund his next step in racing.Ross shares some great memories, stories, and advice in this episode.Ross's advice:Have fun!Keep in mind that a 'super trick' does not exist.Do the basics betterBe politely persistent (when it comes to chasing with sponsors)Connect with Ross:Visit the Speed Secrets Website and join his mailing list.Ross on InstagramSpeed Secrets on FacebookCheck out our sponsors:LMS-EFI Website, Facebook, InstagramAtomic Autosports Website, Facebook, InstagramETC Coaching Michael Ribas on LinkedIn, ETC Website, ETC InstagramFollow us!Late to Grid - InstagramLate To Grid - FacebookLate To Grid - TwitterEpisodes on YouTubeOur Host, Bill - Instagram and TikTok
