A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the rock classic (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult (as well as some other stuff) in just under thirty minutes. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser is taken from the 1976 album Agents of Fortune and explores the theme of eternal love and the inevitability of death. The band name Blue Öyster Cult features an umlaut. The 'metal umlaut' (also known as röck döts) has also been used in the names of several rock or heavy metal bands such as Queensrÿche, Motörhead, the Accüsed, Mötley Crüe, Spın̈al Tap and Green Jellÿ.The song has been featured extensively in film, TV and media: Stephen King named the song as one of the inspirations for his novel The Stand (the lyrics are quoted at the beginning of the novel). The song also appears as the opening theme for the 1994 TV serial based on the novel. The song can be heard playing in a car in the 1978 film Halloween and was used again in the 2022 sequel Halloween Ends, during the ending credits. It can be heard playing on a van radio during the 2022 horror film X and is played during the end credits of The Simpsons episode 'The Parent Rap'. The song has been featured in two series on Netflix: '1899' and 'Orange Is the New Black' and was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. It is a chaotic episode on the Jungle Jim's Podcast! This week, we're joined by the legendary band, Green Jellÿ. They stopped into Jungle Jim's during their most recent tour and we get to pick the brain of bandleader Bill Manspeaker about his life after selling 29 million records! Did you know Gene Simmons only eats the tops of muffins? You do now! We even dive into how Green Jellÿ got hired by Marvel Comics to work on the soundtrack for their video game, Maximum Carnage. Here's to Stan Lee and his forward thinking.

In the first episode featuring albums from 1993, Somewhere in Time Podcast discuss two albums that are vastly different, but also have a lot of things in common. "Cereal Killer Soundtrack" by Green Jellÿ and "Undertow" by Tool. Both Los Angeles bands, there are some familiar voices and drummers featured on both albums. We're joined by Gary Helsinger, SVP, Licensing & Creative at Melodie, who chats to us about the state of library music, but also tells all of the best rock n roll stories we have heard on the Focus podcast thus far. Gary has had a rich and varied background to say the least: for instance, he was Director, A&R at Chrysalis Music Group whilst also a member of platinum-selling rock band Green Jellÿ – plus, he was also a manager, and has deep experience in licensing and synch. So he tells us about the state of modern library music and sync, and his work in that field at Melodie. He also regales us with stories of how he signed himself as a musician, discovered Jeff Buckley, signed the Smashing Pumpkins, argued with David Bowie, loaned Prince his guitar, snooped on shoppers behind a two way mirror with Michael Jackson, and, oh, a whole lot more. In 1993, the band Green Jellÿ had an unlikely Top 20 hit with their song “Three Little Pigs”, which was a twisted, rockin' version of a story that we're all familiar with from childhood. A crudely animated yet unforgettable music video helped launch this song into the stratosphere, and it has remained lodged in many of our brains for 30 years now. This week, we're joined by Another Cheetah guitarist Matt Jurcevich to discuss whether we should all let Green Jellÿ in, or if we need to call Rambo to take care of this wild one hit wonder. Known for sophomoric humor, theatrical performances, and intentionally crude musicianship, Green Jellÿ has had hundreds of members during its existence, with vocalist Bill Manspeaker the only consistent member throughout
Known as “The Cartoon Composer,” Mexican American Ego Plum is an award-winning composer, musician, and music producer whose distinctive sound and unique self-taught sensibility have made him the musical king of quirky animation. Lending his creative talents to numerous animated series, his recent credits include the highly anticipated Netflix animated series The Cuphead Show based on the beloved video game, the Hanna-Barbara series Jellystone for HBO Max, and two projects set in the Spongebob Squarepants universe – the Paramount+ Original Kamp Koral as well as Nickelodeon's The Patrick Star Show. Ego first got the attention of Nickelodeon in 2008 with his unabashedly original score for Amy Winfrey's series Making Fiends, and has since scored other hit animated series including SpongeBob Squarepants, Disney's Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil, as well as Nickelodeon's Welcome To The Wayne and Harvey Beaks – for which he assembled Nickelodeon's first-ever 60-piece orchestra! His next scoring projects are pair of Richard Elfman movies. The first is a sci-fi comedy titled Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens, & Geeks, and features Rebecca Forsythe, George Wendt, and Verne Troyer in his final role. The second is the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic, Forbidden Zone. Plum is co-composing the original scores and songs for both movies with Danny Elfman. In an effort to bring his eclectic influences into his cartoon world, Plum has collaborated/recorded with members of XTC, DEVO, Bauhaus, Black Flag, Descendents, The Dickies, Oingo Boingo, and others. In addition, Ego Plum serves as the musical director of the Raymond Scott Electronic Ensemble and has toured the United States and Europe playing guitar with Grammy-nominated comedy-rock group Green Jellÿ, and he may or may not be a founding member of the parody heavy metal tribute band Mac Sabbath. Ego was born in East Los Angeles where he was raised by his immigrant parents. Foregoing any formal education, he sought refuge in the local punk rock music scene as a drummer and made his way as a composer up through the School of Hard Knocks where he is now a tenured professor (and sometimes, unfortunately, still a student). Over the years, a unique culture developed within and around Mormonism and its adherents, from unique foods (like green Jell-o with carrot shavings) to peculiar behaviors and figures of speech. We take some time in this episode to address some of our favorite “Mormonisms”, while simultaneously poking fun at ourselves for having been a part of it.

In a VERY NSFW episode: Bill Manspeaker, the head puppet master for Green Jellö (or Green Jellÿ, as most see it) joins us to unravel the "world's worst band," bite by bite. Among the many topics we discuss: the band celebrating its (wait for it) 39th anniversary; the “Three Little Pigs” video sensation; holding the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest band (currently over 900+ members!); securing a record contract without the label hearing a single note of the band’s music; being hated by The Ramones; writing and recording a cover of a Gary Glitter song, featuring Hulk Hogan on vocals; directing videos for Tupac, Weird Al, and Marilyn Manson (among many others!); their connection to hard rock band Tool; and of course, challenging anyone to try and de-throne them from their "world's worst band" title (here's a hint...you can't!) It’s Thanksgiving week, and Americans’ thoughts — and stomachs — turn inevitably to food. What better time, then, to explore whether Latter-day Saints have any special connection to food or, at least, certain foods? After all, we’ve all heard about funeral potatoes and green Jell-O. But the faith also has a health code that counsels members on what they should and should not eat or drink. What role does it play? Here to discuss this topic is Christy Spackman, who holds a doctorate in food studies and teaches at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society.

This week on Episode 71 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #16), Bob Noxious and Bobby Pickles send another digital smoke signal to Ben Weasel after the Screeching Weasel founder and frontman mentions them on the latest episode of his Weasel Radio podcast. BAND SPOTLIGHT: Florida hardcore surf punkers The Antidon’ts. The two Bobs interview the three-piece (Zac, Mikey and Anthony) about the band’s witty song titles, their upcoming gig at Bowl Bash 20: Skateopia’s annual music festival, which, this year, Green Jellÿ is headlining, plus they premiere a new track off their new record “Buckwild and Foul” - slated for release on June 1st via Bandcamp. Episode 16’s recurring theme: Pig Pen on tour. SYNOPSIS OF BANTER With Ben Weasel’s well-documented, self-imposed media blackout still much in effect, Bobby makes a bit of headway when Weasel openly considers a guest-host spot on an upcoming DSR episode. Bob makes an on-air promise to not bring up the “woman punching” ordeal Ben went through several years ago. Bobby then confesses to punching a woman in the face, with a closed fist, while in college, after being ejected from her moving vehicle. As Bobby is running through some headlines, the very opinionated Bob Noxious voices his displeasure with Bad Brains’ recent decision to record their new record without iconic frontman, H.R. While discussing the recent signing of PEARS to Fat Wreck, Bob begrudgingly informs Bobby about how the music industry works, stressing that there is no man in a cheap suit and a bad mustache, smoking a cigar, waiting to sign every band with a gimmick. Bob reminisces about his childhood affinity for Gobstopper candies when he hears news of a documentary in the works about the seminal indie punk band Jawbreaker. Then, Bobby reports on a band trying to have their van replaced after being stolen from their own front yard, while not on tour. Bob thinks that GoFundMe campaigns have gotten a little out of control. Still gloating about Dying Scene Radio being mentioned on Weasel Radio, Bobby attempts to deconstruct Ben’s opinion of mainstream media, which dismisses Punk News and other similar news gathering sites as nothing more than “regurgitated press clippings”. Bobby calls Bob out for not always remembering the facts from week-to-week, then Bob recalls Bobby’s last trip to Florida when Bobby was “chumming the sharks”, vomiting over the edge of the chartered yacht they were on. Bobby concedes the point and asks to move on to the next topic. Bob gives fatherly advice to Set It Off’s recently fired bassist Austin Kerr and then tries to dispel the fact that the band is from his own backyard. Bob’s self serving needs continue as he gives the rundown of upcoming concert dates for his band, mentioning that his contact in Austin, TX will be at Punk Rock Bowlinginstead of the show. Bobby assures him that maybe next year his band can be included on the bill, to which Bob interjects that he can play this year by finding a 24 hour laundromat and making flyers to be distributed to homeless people and high school students. Bob will be on tour with his band this week on their affectionately penned vehicle “the fart bus” and their first stop is New Orleans, LA. Bobby assumes that all Bob really wants is another head on a stick in his doll garden, when Bob wonders aloud as to what type of conflict he might expect by purchasing a voodoo doll for his girlfriend as a souvenir. In one of the more bizarre news stories to have come across the wire this week, Brendan Kelly has filmed a video for the AV Club to help promote the Twitter handle @Nihilist_Arbys, which both Bobs agree is quite possibly the best feed Twitter currently has to offer. While revisiting the subject of band reuniting/breaking up, Bob determines thatSublime with Rome should just move on in a different direction now that Bud Gaugh has left the band. Bobby shows his shear disgust by declaring his utter hate of the first song off the band’s new record. Always inviting controversy, Bob decides to play the song anyway. Then, Bob owns up to not being very well versed in ska, so Bobby recommends that he watch Noisey’s latest episode of “Under The Influence”, which features a full history of 2 Tone music. THIS WEEK’S PLAYLIST Ellesmere - Mooks Spoilers - All For One Money Left To Burn - Finish Line Kids Insane - Justice Broadside - Playing In Traffic Blood Drugs - Division The Antidont’s - You Can’t Spange The World Sublime with Rome - Wherever You Go Oceanside Sound System - Put Your Guns Down Tear Them Down - En Insikt The Kenneths - Aint Got No Game The Melvins - Captain Comedown Dying Scene Radio is now on iTunes! This week on Episode 65 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #10), Bob Noxious interviews Joe Queer, guitarist and lead singer of the legendary American punk rock band The Queers on their co-headlining ticket with The Dwarves atBackBooth in Orlando, FL. And Bobby Pickles slurs through his end of this week’s podcast drunk on whiskey. Dwarves’ frontman Blag Dahlia denies Noxious’ allegations of conspiracy to expel Bobby Pickles from The Bowery Electric on this two-part series concerning “some obscure dude from New York”. SYNOPSIS OF BANTER: Bobby asks Bob about how he got his start in radio. Bob explains his humble beginnings on a local Pirate Radio Station and growing up the son of a 70's A.M. Radio "Hot Jock" DJ. Bobby declares, “pop-anything sucks”, including but not limited to pop-country and pop-hip-hop and pop-punk; he then continues on with a news story about Blink 182. Bob continues to be amazed that the aforementioned band remains seemingly relevant to the patrons of dyingscene.com and quickly dismisses them. Bob asks Joe Queer why punk rock legends are so much more accessible than the untouchable rock heroes of yesteryear. Joe tells Bob about meeting Joey Ramone and eventually working with him on his solo record. Legendary! (There’s that word again). Later, Blag baba-booeys the interview, asking Joe about "the blow and all that stuff". Bob discusses his deep seething hatred of the "emo/kid/bubblegum/pop" bands who are continually signed to Epitaph, explaining further that the only relevant band still left on the label is Bad Religion (not true, see: Rancid, Pennywise, Millencolin, Propagandhi, The Descendents...and the list goes on and on). Talk turns to all of the different silly names that record labels are naming themselves. Bobby mentions looking forward to seeing Less Than Jake in New Haven, then gloats that there are no Florida dates for Bob to catch. Bob informs Bobby that LTJ's frontman,Chris DeMakes, lives in the same Florida city as he, continuing that they play roughly eight local shows per year. Bobby, once again, invites Bob to New York for a yearly shindig, then accuses him of being “too pushy” when Bob suggests an interview request with NJ hardcore band,Bigwig. Passive-aggressive puns are passed around playfully as Bob chastises Bobby for a slow news week at DyingScene.com when his supposed “jouralist” co-host covers a story about "some dude’s record collection" - Bobby waxing on about Minor Threat’sFiller EP. THIS WEEK’S HEADLINESSome of the topics reported herein, include, but are not limited to the following:Keep the Manspeaker Family together - Green Jellÿ frontman, and loving father, Bill Manspeaker starts a GoFundMe campaign to raise $5000 to retain a lawyer for his embattled court proceedings, attempting to remove custody rights from his daughter;Contest: Sweet Baby “It’s A Girl” LP reissue, new Sweet Baby 7-inch & more; Video: “The Making of Fat Mike’s Punk Rock Musical” (Part 2); more Matt Skiba and Blink 182news (Bob yawns); The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die sign to Epitaph Records; Mest announces reunion with classic lineup; Less Than Jake announce more US/Canada dates with Reel Big Fish; Live Video: Bigwig perform “Flavor Ice” at Natefest; Watch Scott Helland (Deep Wound, Outpatients) gush about record collection. This week on Episode 64 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #9), Bobby Pickles interviews Dwarves’ frontman Blag Dahlia prior to the band’s seminal east coast show at The Bowery Electric in New York City. With “Press Pass” in hand, Pickles covers the concert in true punk rock fashion - culminating in a swarm of security guards ejecting him from the venue. Bobby is convinced that Blag gave the orders to have him forcibly removed from the concert in order to validate the band’s reputation. The FULL Video interview can be found HERE on the DSR YouTube channel: Bobby asks about the band’s nom de plumes, Blag’s books, zines and brilliant writing ability, and the day-to-day operations of a DIY punk icon, while Blag mentions his band being somehow linked to Islamic Fundamentalism, which is the perfect time to boast about being very tall and having a large penis. BAND SPOTLIGHT: Mid RatsThe Bobs reach out to the Lancaster, Pennsylvania punk act, Mid Rats, for a St. Paddy's Day interview special...and Bobby has been drinking. The band, which just recently released their 4 song EP, Vandalize You, are this week’s featured Dying Scene artist. Bobby takes a trip down memory lane when he reveals that he used to date a girl whose uncle owned a very prominent vintage clothing business in downtown Lancaster: Zap & Co. As the conversation progresses, drunk-Bobby calls the band out for not playing Philadelphia sooner, but then saves face and displaying his literary prowess by citing Mark Twain as a reference when the band is asked about the origin of their name. THIS WEEK IN NEWS!Some of the topics reported herein, include, but are not limited to the following: Green Day to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame by Fall Out Boy; Punk producer Thom Wilson (The Offspring, Bad Religion, T.S.O.L., Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, The Vandals, etc.) dies: Bob reveals his tasteless side when he ponders starting a "Punk Rock Death Pool", to which Bobby selects “any of the surviving Ramones members” or the high-odds pick of Green Jellÿ, who possess 600+ bandmates; Bob ponders the list, but remains silent out of respect for the recently departed. This week on Dying Scene Radio, the Bobs forgo the traditional format (no BAND SPOTLIGHT) in lieu of conducting two key interviews with Justin Thirsk of Chaos Delivery Machine and Bill Manspeaker of Green Jellÿ, respectively. Per usual, the two compare notes about the weather (Bob thrives in a sub-tropical paradise while Bobby survives yet another week of frozen, mucky hell), Bobby's girlfriend breaks up with him because of, among other things, the podcast, then Bob insists that his co-host settle for a “nice, vegan chick” instead of a “punk rock girl”, and Bob voices his displeasure with Bobby’s constant weekly updates about Blink 182. Regarding the Bobs’ interview with Justin Thirsk, Bob begins with an apology for giving bad information the week prior about Justin’s brother, Jason, who was the original bass player of Pennywise and the author of their iconic anthem, Bro Hymn. Justin takes the Bobs on a trip down memory lane about his former band 98 Mute and explains the origins of his new recording project, Chaos Delivery Machine. Bob compares Korean food to a Japanese band celebrating 20 years together, then mentions Burger King when another veteran punk rock band becomes the topic of conversation (Bob obviously needs to eat better before the show). Bob goes on to explain "Crossover" to Bobby, then finishes his thought by comparing punk and metal music to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Bob invites Bobby to visit Florida for his birthday, then tries to convince him to move back to the Sunshine State, insisting that all New Yorkers are "mean and nasty" - recalling his time frequenting the state as a youth and being punched in the face for an off-color remark. Bobby refuses to give up the other reasons why his girlfriend dumped him. The Bobs both agree that they have "Type A" personalities, then the two “A-holes” connect with Green Jellÿ founder and frontman, Bill Manspeaker, in an online video chat. In true form, Bill shares the link with his fans who proceed to flood the chat room like circus freaks aiming to impress their ringleader - the almighty Cowgod himself. The Bobs attempt to reign in some of Bill’s adoring fans but bedlam ensues (the FULL INTERVIEW can be found HERE on the DSR YouTube page).
