How do you break the cycle of burnout when everything in life feels overwhelming? In this episode, I sit down with Sydney Williams, founder of Hiking My Feelings, to explore how she went from corporate exhaustion to a purpose-driven career outdoors. After one life-changing backpacking trip, Sydney realized the power of nature in healing both mind and body. She shares how she overcame chronic stress, put her diabetes into remission, and completely redesigned her life around well-being and adventure. Her journey is a powerful reminder that true healing doesn't always happen in a therapist's office—it can start with something as simple as stepping outside. We talk about the impact of stress on chronic illness, what most people get wrong about burnout, and why reconnecting with nature might be the missing piece in your own life. If you're feeling stuck in the grind and looking for a new way forward, this episode is for you. Topics Covered in this Episode: Why a single hiking trip had a greater impact on Sydney's mental health than years of self-help books The unexpected moment that made her rethink her entire life—and take a huge leap of faith What most people get wrong about burnout (and the simple fix that changes everything) How Sydney overcame fear and left corporate life behind for a purpose-driven career outdoors The truth about stress and chronic illness—and how she reversed her diagnosis The key shift that helped her build a life around healing, movement, and freedom How you can apply Sydney's lessons to your own life Tune in now to hear Sydney's inspiring transformation and discover how you can create more freedom, healing, and joy in your own life. Clearly we are not okay - as a society, as a community, as humans. After a nice weekend with some friends, we realized we had forgotten how to hang out, but only after remembering how good it felt. This might blow your mind, I know it did for me since the time period shared is from the year I graduated high school until near-present day. This article in The Atlantic talks about this phenomenon: "From 2003 to 2022, American men reduced their average hours of face-to-face socializing by about 30 percent. For unmarried Americans, the decline was even bigger—more than 35 percent. For teenagers, it was more than 45 percent. Boys and girls ages 15 to 19 reduced their weekly social hangouts by more than three hours a week. In short, there is no statistical record of any other period in U.S. history when people have spent more time on their own." In this episode, Sydney and Barry discuss: Hiking Your Feelings' themes and the universal application of the lessons and topics within "If it all ends tomorrow, I'm grateful that we've been doing the work we've been doing, and that I've gotten to know myself this well." - Sydney Sydney and Barry have a moment where language moves to embodied understanding, and then Sydney unpacks in real time, how that transition happens - finding the language -> understanding in context -> embodied understanding The benefits of having conversations on the trail vs. our tendency to rush through it face-to-face Barry shares a skydiving metaphor for how he's been feeling lately How to not die in the wilderness (and why Mount Washington in New Hampshire is so underestimated) UPCOMING EVENTS: March 4: Intentional Hiking - join us for a chance to win a Kula Cloth and a signed copy of Hiking Your Feelings: Blazing a Trail to Self-Love! This week we are thrilled to have Gabaccia Moreno joining us for a conversation about all the things - People Over Profit (inspired by our panel at Outdoor Retailer), doing life (and business) differently, paying people what they're worth, the Outdoorist Oath, and so much more! We recorded this episode together in the van in a parking lot in Salt Lake City - one of our first in-person interviews in awhile - and the joy we're sharing is palpable. Settle in for a great chat that will leave your cheeks hurting from smiling so hard, and inspired by the possibilities of business and life done differently. IN THIS EPISODE: We catch up with Gabaccia and take a walk down memory lane, recounting how we originally connected and how life has brought us full-circle Doing Business Differently: How the Outdoorist Oath is spreading the wealth, extending opportunities to the community “You can't put a price on the work we do” (at the Outdoorist Oath and Hiking My Feelings) Doing Life Differently: honoring the call of the great outdoors and downsizing to maximize living life on our own terms, not merely exchanging our time for money to help pay a landlord's mortgage Sponsors Who Walk the Walk: Why we're stoked to work with Sawyer And more! ABOUT OUR GUEST: Gabaccia Moreno is a first-generation Mexican-American multimedia storyteller, consultant, and passionate outdoor advocate. She holds a B.A. in Theater and Anthropology from SUNY College at Buffalo and an M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University. Growing up visiting the Maya forest gave her an appreciation for the land and its wildlife at an early age. , one that prevails today. Her works, whether artistic, creative, or entrepreneurial, have always intersected with the social and environmental issues that surround her. She currently serves as the Executive Director of The Outdoorist Oath, an organization creating educational tools and models to help and encourage people to become allies for planet, inclusion, and adventure. She's the Director of Social Responsibility on the board of Hiking My Feelings and sits on the Joshua Tree National Park Association Diversity Council. Gabaccia has also served as National Monuments Fellow (via The Wyss Foundation) at Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, where she worked on initiatives to ensure historically and deliberately excluded communities have access to the process of protecting our lands and waters. Other credits include contributions to Backpacker Magazine, hosting her own Live conversation series named Exploring Responsibly and Explorando Responsablemente on Instagram, and being the 2021 resident host for the She Explores Podcast. In her free time, you'll find her writing, advising businesses and nonprofits, or adventuring outside, probably taking photos, fishing, backpacking, hiking, practicing yoga, or conspiring with friends to make the outdoors more welcoming for all. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wellnessinthewilderness/message
Season Two of Wellness in the Wilderness is here and we've got an epic mini-season in store for you! In May, we celebrated five years since we started Hiking My Feelings, and as we were outlining the different guests we wanted to have on upcoming episodes of Wellness in the Wilderness, I noticed a pattern. There are so many incredible humans who have been a big part of our journey - whether that's helping us get the word out and affirming the work we do, making life-changing introductions, inspiring new adventures and campaigns, or helping us bring our programs to life. Now, we're excited to share the first of five conversations with five women who have been a huge influence on the first five years of this movement - we hope you love these conversations as much as we do! Big thanks to the team at Sawyer for seeing the vision and supporting the show, we couldn't do this without you! In this very special kick-off episode, I have the opportunity to turn the mic and interview the legendary Gale Straub, former host of the She Explores podcast - the first podcast to give us an opportunity to share the Hiking My Feelings story, not once but twice! When we reconnected around this interview, Gale was in the middle of reading and advance copy of my new book, Hiking Your Feelings: Blazing a Trail to Self-Love and requested that we walk through one of the chapters and utilize the prompts shared within to facilitate this conversation about Being Where You Are - we hope you enjoy it! ABOUT OUR GUEST: Gale Straub (she/her) is an audio producer and nature-lover who calls the Seacoast area of New Hampshire home. For almost a decade, she hosted and produced a podcast called She Explores, all about the different ways we find ourselves outside and a whole lot of incredible women moving through their respective journeys in the outdoors. Gale's also a twice published author and her most recent book is Women and Water, a collaborative effort with Hailey Hirst and Noël Russell. Today, Gale's working in audio, stepping outside whenever she can, and dreaming up other creative projects. You can stay in touch via her website: www.galestraub.com/newsletter and by searching her name on various social media platforms. IN THIS EPISODE: We catch up with Gale, who recently wrapped up an almost 10-year run hosting the She Explores podcast and learn about what is up next for her Per Gale's request, Sydney gives an intro to Chapter 7 of Hiking Your Feelings: Blazing a Trail to Self-Love - Being Where You Are: Unpacking Distractions Sydney and Gale also go through the Mindful Miles prompts from Chapter 7, encouraging readers to use the prompts as conversation starters on and off the trail Pre-order the book here! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wellnessinthewilderness/message

In this episode we interview Sydney Williams of Hiking My Feelings. After being a recently diagnosed diabetic and quitting two jobs, Sydney hiked atop a mountain in hopes to find the answers she was looking for. Rather than stunning 360º views, the only thing to see were clouds. Still, Sydney felt a certain calm. The reason? Because instead of eating and drinking her feelings, she was hiking her feelings. A light bulb went off. Next thing she knew she sold everything to hit the road, share her story and introduce others the healing powers of nature. Over 5 years later her nonprofit is helping hundreds reconnect with themselves and reconnect with nature. “So, in the pursuit of healing, joy is kind of a natural byproduct of that for me. But it takes a tremendous amount of work and awareness to recognize joy when it's present, because it's not always sunshine and rainbows and unicorns and hippie dippy stuff. Sometimes joy is just the absence of despair, that can feel tremendous — especially coming out of these really deep, dark and long periods — where it just feels like slog of moving through things to just be on the other side of pain. Just the absence of that despair and confusion can feel like joy, and can give us clues in our body as to like what it feels like to be in that space.” - Sydney Williams This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Inner and Outer Wilderness, hosted by Duncan Cheung. The Inner and Outer Wilderness miniseries explores the wonderment of and between the wilderness out there and within each of us. In this episode, Duncan talks with Sydney Williams, founder of Hiking My Feelings, about how her inner and outer wilderness experience moved her to form a nonprofit dedicated to helping people heal through hiking. What an amazing guest! As you all know, I have great respect for people who work on helping the greater good…the community of souls that we all represent. I also love the spirit of people that tackle things head on and when you add to that the facilitation of transformational healing with Nature as the backdrop...I'm in! Sydney Williams through her amazing organization, Hiking My Feelings, has hosted over 300 events around the United States, and they have grown a community that includes folks from all over the world…people from India, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Malaysia, Nigeria, Uganda, and Czechia just to name a few. It's truly an incredible story and I highly encourage you all to check it out. We talked about being married to Greg Brady, hiding the fact she is an interdimensional being, the greatest National Park, the importance of hugging trees, the unappreciated Salmon Berry, we uncover the truth about the dangerous 4th dentist, the reality of UFOs (they're real), the staggering number of Americans living with diabetes, the genius of Banksy, the truly shocking fact that Grey's Anatomy being on for 18 years! (what?), we stand united against Pat Sajack, her 700 ski dives (Greg Brady has 8000!) including the treacherous jump #13 (need to listen!), hashed out the fat suit for skinny actors debate and undeniable power of manifestation among many other important topics. She was a true pleasure to have on the show...I highly encourage you to check out her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/HikingMyFeelings and her Instagram page @hikingmyfeelings and her book: https://hikingmyfeelings.org/book check out what she is up to as it is really cool and inspirational. I hope you all enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

My guest this week, Sydney Williams, may be familiar to some (and if you listened in on my conversation with Victoria Amico of Plus Sized Outdoors a month or so ago, this name should definitely be familiar to you!) Sydney Williams is the founder of Hiking My Feelings (the group) and the author of Hiking My Feelings (the book). And yes, you will have to listen to a little bit of fan girl blathering from me, because Sydney is a rock star and I have huge respect for what she's creating and supporting in the outdoors.Sydney and I could've talked for a week, there's that much to dive into, and this conversation wound up being a long one. So I'm doing something a little different this week. This is 'Part I' of our conversation, I'll be dropping the rest tomorrow - load them both up and listen in as you head out for your long weekend adventures. But consider yourself forewarned - this conversation has plenty of salty language and adult theme landmines, so if you're with your kids, you might want to pop in the earbuds first. Although once you've listened, you might want to share with your tweener daughters anyway, because there are so many messages here that are important for women and girls to hear.Make sure you check out Sydney's Blaze Your Own Trail to Self-Love program that will be kicking off with a FREE workshop on Sunday, February 20th! Assault and shame. Childhood emotional abuse and newfound boundaries. Recovery and hiking. The Bachelor. Sydney comes onto the podcast to share her unique journey to radical self-acceptance and radical compassion after being assaulted by a coworker one night while she was sleeping. Having just moved to Florida with her family with plans to change the world of medicine, the assault completely changed the trajectory of her life. She would face unhealthy habits, not being believed by family, and a diagnosis of a chronic illness. She would keep it hidden for over 11 years until, one day, she and her husband turned on The Bachelor and he offered support after a contestant was speaking out about her own story. And from the most tragic thing that ever happened to her, Sydney would create the most beautiful life she ever hoped to live. Listen in to learn about her unique recovery journey, and how hiking became the battlecry she needed in order to handle all of her trauma. In this episode we interview Sydney Williams, who is the founder of Hiking My Feelings, an organization all about sharing the healing power of nature with others. Sydney grew up in Kansas, but decided to move to the west coast after college. After getting a gig as the online voice for Oscar Myer Weiner, she soon found herself as a big wig marketer for fortune 500 companies. After all her hard work she finally made it - but that's not what she would tell you. The long hours and stress that came along with her career was wearing her down, on top of unexpectedly being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It wasn't until one gloomy day looking over the San Diego skyline from atop a mountain that she realized the thing that grounded her was getting outdoors and simply hiking. Thus the concept for Hiking My Feelings was born. She decided to ditch the corporate world and chase her inherent passion to help others through the healing powers of nature. Now she inspires hundreds of individuals that have faced trauma through classes and retreats. If you've ever wondered how the great outdoors can help you grow, while overcoming your lowest lows, then this one's for you! Tweet us and let us know what you think of this episode! @illuminecollect
This week we welcome Tammy Higgins to the podcast. After her son was a victim of a hit and run on a local country road, Tammy and her family found healing on Michigan's Great Lake to Lake Trail Route #1 because it is wheelchair accessible. In this episode: - Who is Tammy? - Why is she an advocate for local trails? - We discuss the differences between the meditation and healing found in backcountry hikes versus local trails that are more accessible - What would Tammy change if she had a magic wand? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support

Before we head out on some epic adventures, join me and Kris Maynard as we discuss safety considerations that people with diabetes should consider before heading out into the wilderness. Kris is the founder of Glucose Revival, and he created the company out of his experiences as a Type 1 Diabetic and a firefighter/EMT because of the following factors: 1. His position in the Air Force was taken away due to his diagnosis as a type 1 diabetic. 2. For two years, his firefighter position was taken away, as a result of a low blood sugar incident. 3. Living active is important to him; yet, as any diabetic knows, it is truly challenging to be active without a lot of preparation anticipating a drop in blood sugar. 4. Most importantly, in 2018, Kris' and his wife learned that their youngest son has two of the autoantibodies that predict that he too will likely be diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in the next few years. It has become his mission to help others live their lives to their fullest extent, despite a diabetes diagnosis. This 20-day event is a fundraiser for the Hiking My Feelings Wilderness Wellness Center, the American Diabetes Association, and RAINN - the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. You can get tickets to the Virtual Campfire at https://hikingmyfeelings.org/campfire and you can make a one-time donation at https://hikingmyfeelings.org/give Every day is a new opportunity to make a difference. With each opportunity that comes our way, Barry and I ask ourselves two questions: 1. Will this make the world a better place for EVERYONE, not just for some of us? 2. Does this feel good? If the answer to those two questions is yes, then we go forth with enthusiasm and gratitude. Tonight, as with every night around the Virtual Campfire, we hope to make the world a bit better for everyone. Swipe through the photos to meet our guests: Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis is a Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University. She is the 2015 awardee for the California Psychological Association Distinguished Scientist Award for her research addressing trauma and oppression. She is also a past president of the Society for the Psychology of Women and a former American Psychological Association representative to the United Nations. She received the Early Career Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Service award. Dr. Bryant-Davis is director of the Culture and Trauma Research Lab at Pepperdine University which focuses on the cultural context of recovery from interpersonal traumas such as child abuse, sexual assault, intimate partner abuse, racism, and human trafficking. This is going to be an AWESOME fireside chat, and if you have questions for Dr. Thema, leave them in the comments! Tonight we are having a #HikingMyFeelingsFamily meeting with the folks who have been the "first" to do something to help us inch our movement forward: Becca was the first person to use the hashtag after I started writing about #hikingmyfeelings. Ash was the first person to ask a question on my first speaking tour. Pete was the first person to ask about the process of Hiking My Feelings - how do you do it? Laura was the first person to pre-order the book last year. All of these people have been integral to our growth and evolution and we are so excited to chat with them about how hiking has helped them heal and what the movement means to them. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support

When we are kids, this is encouraged, but it can be scary to put ourselves out there as we get older. If you lack the confidence and self-trust to take risks, that doesn't have to be your story forever. If you ask Kaleo (vocals/guitar for @pepperlive), there's "nothing like a brand new day" to start putting one foot in front of the other toward your goals. Our campfire chat tonight with Kaleo and Melanie Wassman was centered around exactly that - every day is a new opportunity. How do you find balance? How do you keep moving forward when it's hard? We are stoked to share that Kaleo has recorded a Hiking My Feelings-exclusive version of "Brand New Day" and "The Invite" that we will be sending out to all of our donors after the event. Whenever you need to tap into this inspirational energy, you'll have two songs to give you a boost. At the 36-minute mark, Kaleo shares the inspiration for the song. Melanie is also the founder of Spell Botanicals, an all-natural skincare line that is on a mission to empower women from the inside out. For our VIP All Access pass holders, they're receiving some of the GLOW facial oil - check out http://spellbotanicals.com TYLER CURLEY - COMMUNITY MARKETING AT SALOMON Here's a pro-tip: wearing your hiking boots at your standing desk is not the same as breaking them in. In the chapter we shared tonight, I earned my first blister an hour into our six-day trek on the #TransCatalinaTrail. Luckily, Salomon isn't going to let you make the same mistakes I did, and Tyler Curley shared a bit about shoe selection, how to avoid blisters, and showcased some of their favorite products to help us hit the trail safely and in style. AMANDA DULONG Finally, meet #HikingMyFeelingsFamily member, Amanda DuLong. We met Amanda at our tour stop in Fort Worth last year. She kept hiking after we left and has cultivated a cool community of women who like hiking and have the same taste in music. We love seeing photos of her and the gals out for a hike - this is what this movement is all about! Amanda is also very passionate about educating women about implant-related illnesses, so if you have breast implants, we highly recommend watching this! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support
I didn't know it at the time, but 10 years ago today, I started my healing journey. It started with a choice. A choice I made for myself, by myself, without any outside influence from friends, family, or colleagues. A choice made independently of any expectations I had been trying to meet. Ten years ago today, I made my way from my office at my swanky agency job in Chicago out west to rural Illinois to a little town off of Highway 30, eventually arriving at a skydiving center. I had decided I wanted to learn how to skydive by myself, not attached to an instructor. After falling feet-knees-face into the grass after exiting my vehicle, I walked into a tiny airplane hangar and met my instructor, Barry. Over the course of the next four hours, this man taught me how to save my own life. He met me where I was. He was kind. He was also devastatingly handsome and I loved him instantly, but it felt different from anything I had experienced before. I drove home from that skydiving class and knew I was forever changed. This was the man I would eventually marry. Barry was the first person I trusted enough to share my survivor story with. He's put me back together through broken bones, broken spirit, and a broken heart. Hiking My Feelings would not exist today without him. Frankly, neither would I. He saw me then, he sees me now, and I finally feel like the woman I've always known I could be. Tonight, we celebrate healing and what it means to step into yourself and become fully embodied. Join us around the Virtual Campfire as we chat with Kristina Italic, Michelle LeRoy and Victoria Amico. These women have all been an integral part of my journey as Sydney, and our journey as an organization here at Hiking My Feelings. If you're feeling trapped in your body, completely disconnected, and you're ready to come home to yourself, we hope to see you around the fire. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support

This week Sydney Williams joins me on the show! Sydney is a former collegiate athlete and competitive skydiver (and it was news to me this is a competitive sport!) who unexpectedly found herself on the receiving end of a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis while grappling with unresolved trauma from a decades-old sexual assault. So what did she do? She set out on a mission to turn her pain into power. Two hikes across Catalina Island and 80 miles later, she founded Hiking My Feelings to help others tap into the mind-body connection and healing power of nature that helped kick her self-limiting beliefs and disease into remission. In this episode, Sydney and I had a conversation about enduring hardships, the choices we make in the wake of them, and how we cope and make peace with our pain. We also talked about how Sydney’s hiking trips led her to appreciate her body, as well as, accepting and reversing her Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis. Her story is an incredible one. Our conversation was a beautiful one. I hope you’ll listen. In this episode, you’ll hear: What led Sydney to hike the Trans-Catalina Trail, completely unprepared, armed only with delusional self-confidence (5:21) Some of the moments and lessons from her first backpacking trip (12:57) Embracing her body just the way it is and taking deliberate action to make her social media feed a place to find positivity and inspiration (13:50) Her Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, how she handled it and what she did to reverse it (18:22) What it means to unpack your trauma and how Sydney began to unpack her own following a sexual assault (29:03) One step survivors of trauma can take to start the healing process (40:44) http://yourkickasslife.com/310
Sydney Williams is a former competitive skydiver, author of the book Hiking My Feelings, and founder of a movement by the same name that she created to help others tap into the mind-body connection and healing power of nature. The journey that led Sydney to Hiking My Feelings is full of ups and downs, including competitive skydiving, working her way up at a prestigious marketing agency, becoming CMO at a successful startup, and her diabetes diagnosis.I invited Sydney on the podcast because she is the definition of resiliency in my mind. Life has thrown all sorts of twists and turns at her but she keeps getting back up and pushing forward. In this episode, we cover:How Sydney found the strength to tell somebody about her sexual assault for the first time, over a decade after it happenedHow the death of 23 of her friends in 4 years affected herWhy being diagnosed with Type II diabetes is the best thing that's ever happened to herThe tools she used to cope with it all (ice cream being one of them)How her two hikes on the Trans-Catalina Trail changed her lifeHer reasons for setting boundaries with her family that have resulted in her not speaking with them for over a yearIf you enjoy this episode, please help spread the podcast by leaving a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/woh
For Sydney Williams, “Hiking My Feelings” means identifying trauma, figuring out how it manifests in our bodies through physical and mental disease, and figuring out how to heal from that. For Sydney, it’s been hiking - and taking her story on tour to connect with other people who benefit from it. She believes that showing up as your whole self is how we’ll changed the world: one hike, kayak, bike ride, (fill in the______) at a time.Featured in this episode: Sydney WilliamsHosted by Gale StraubSponsored by Danner & SmartwoolJoin the She Explores Podcast community on FacebookVisit She-Explores.comResourcesHiking My Feelings: Website & InstagramPre-order Sydney's Book: Hiking My Feelings - Stepping into the Healing Power of NatureSydney Williams' personal Instagram: @sydneyunfilteredShe Explores Landing PageSponsors and Discount CodesSmartwool: Learn more at Smartwool.comDanner: Learn more at Danner.comEpisodes air weekly on Wednesdays-- subscribe wherever you listen so you never miss an episode.Music is by Josh Woodward, Lee Rosevere, and Kai Engel using a creative commons attributions license.

Sydney is many things: woman, diabetic, adventure athlete, happy wife, storyteller, improv student, recovering marketer, occasional yogi, and aspiring photographer. And... she’s a survivor. “Hiking My Feelings” is how Sydney adjusted her coping mechanisms after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in September 2017. After realizing her choices had contributed to the diagnosis, she realized she could change those choices. Historically, she had soothed and celebrated with food and alcohol. After a training hike for the TCT, she realized instead of eating or drinking her feelings, she had been hiking her feelings.
