Billionaires. They're everywhere. But how did this obsession begin? In many ways, Bill Gates is patient zero in our collective fixation on billionaires, particularly those bred in the tech world. Before there was Bezos, Musk, Zuckerberg, or Thiel, there was Bill Gates. If Warren Buffett is the modern father figure of billionaires, Gates is undoubtedly the first son. Anupreeta Das, S. They also discuss the quest we have been invited into that requires bravery, chivalry, romance, loyalty, commitment, villains, and honor! Every great quest is seeking something of great value! Your heart, your relationship with God, and your marriage are all worthy of your greatest efforts and quest. Join us and get even better equipped for the great adventure you are in! “Mawwiage is what bwings us togeder today!” The Princess Bride, 1987 _______ Show notes; Merriam Webster dictionary 1 : a journey made in search of something  as in…They went on a quest for gold. 2 : a long and difficult effort to find or do something Examples: a quest for answers, The team's quest to win a championship., a quest to discover the truth. 3.: a chivalrous enterprise in medieval romance usually involving an adventurous journey God's Quest for Humanity – God-Quest.com (excerpts) “In the beginning, God created human children for himself and gave them a perfect, well-ordered home where they could grow and thrive in peace and safety. He loved them and delighted in communing with them and giving them wonderful gifts. But one day, those children decided that all of God's gifts were not enough. He must be holding out on them. They did not trust his love, so they did the one thing that he had forbidden them from doing. On that day, God lost his beloved. But even as he watched his children grow further and further away from him, he vowed to one day win them back. So began the story of God's quest to reclaim his lost love, a quest that would cost him all he had to give. The story of the Bible is God's quest to restore his broken family. God is the main character throughout, and God's quest for the heart of humanity is the main message. Every story points to who he is and why he is worthy of our love and devotion. The Bible is not a history of humanity. It is not a scientific thesis. It is not a list of rules and regulations for proper living. It is certainly not a guide on how to be happy and prosperous. Parts of the Bible address these and many other topics, but none of them is the point. The point is God's love for humanity and why we should love him back. It is an intimate love letter designed to draw us back to him.” So, listen, God is on a quest to capture your heart – He wants to address the condition of your heart and restore your heart…He wants to win you back. He wants you to be on a quest for Him and for your marriage that wins…. Isaiah 30:21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, (this is the way; walk in it.) God will reveal to you His wisdom knowledge and understanding in His quest to restore your hearts and as you make decisions about your marriage, about each other, for each other, on behalf of each other, and restore your oneness with Him as a unified team through the wilderness with Him. God is also giving you protection through the wisdom and knowledge He reveals as treasure. Lamentations 3(ESV) 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;     his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are NEW every morning;     great is your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,     “therefore I will hope in him.” 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him,     to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly     for the salvation of the Lord.  And that is truly His QUEST for each of you! You are fully known and deeply loved!

This week, State of Wonder's all about the journey: we travel the world with starchitect Brad Cloepfil, meditate on environmental disaster with installation artist Vanessa Renwick, tromp through the war memories of Vietnam vet Mark Waszkiewicz, go on a pilgrimage with writer Ellen Waterston, and more. Brad Cloepfil Normally Designs Museums; Now He's Featured in One - 1:01Portland's preeminent living architect, Brad Cloepfil, the founding principal of Allied Works, is not just an architect, but also an artist. A new exhibit at the Portland Art Museum, "Case Work," demonstrates this with over 60 sculptural works that are far from the sterile blueprints or uptight models you might expect. Cloepfil walks us through the exhibit and his globe-trotting buildings, from the Clifford Still Museum in Denver to the Museum of Art and Design in New York to the National Music Center in Calgary to Wieden+Kennedy here in Portland, the building that started it all (thanks to a gig he did designing Saucebox for $2,000 plus a $2,000 bar tab).Art Glass Moratorium Extended by the State as Glassmakers Struggle to Install Pollution Controls - 11:01Earlier this year, a study revealed dangerous amounts of heavy metals around Bullseye Glass, whose factory is located near residential areas in SE Portland. Now Governor Kate Brown has extended a moratorium on the processes that require these metals into June, despite impassioned pleas from Bullseye.International Youth Silent Film Festival Winners Declared - 16:43Started in Portland, the International Youth Silent Film Festival is a global competition that brings a unique challenge to aspiring filmmakers under 20: create a silent film using bare-bones production resources and one of ten original organ scores. The films are screened in theaters with live musical accompaniment, and regional champions travel to Portland to compete for the global prize on June 8 at the Hollywood Theater (it's open to the public). We speak with festival founder Jon Palanuk and the reigning NW regional winners, brothers Austin and Connor Fitzpatrick, about their incredible CGI noir short.Vietnam Vet Pulls Together Film, Photos, Memoir and Music in His Quest to Document the War - 25:41Marc Waszkiewicz is a former US Marine who did three tours in Vietnam, beginning when he was 19. But even though he is now retired, the experience is far from over. While deployed, Waszkiewicz gathered more than 4,000 photographs and hours of 8 millimeter film footage, and has been creating art from this raw material ever since. With a book of photographs, a memoir, and an album of original songs under his belt, he is now in the process of producing a documentary film on the experience. Vanessa Renwick's Next-Level F---ed Up at the Portland Art Museum - 36:33Installation and film artist Vanessa Renwick has created a sound and video piece that rapid-fires both a sense of impending disaster and a zen-like acceptance of change. "Next-Level F*cked Up” plays on our fears of environmental, social and cultural change, orphan seal pups and abandoned dog poop bags commingling with Portland gentrification and Hurricane Katrina footage in hodgepodge of horribleness loops — although fret not: it's not all lost. On view at the Portland Art Museum through July 19.Following A Spiritual Path, Literally - 44:02Following a medieval tradition, Bend-based writer Ellen Waterston undertook to walk one of the most famous Christian pilgrimage routes in Europe, the Camino de Santiago. Her journey inspired a verse novel, “Via Lactea: A Woman of a Certain Age Walks the Camino,” which has now been adapted into the opera "Via Lactea." Opera Bend will premiere it June 10–12 at the Tower Theater.

Lara Netting’s new book explores the life, career, and work of one man as a window into the history and associated practices of “Chinese art” during a period of massive transformation in the China of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While reading A Perpetual Fire: John C. Ferguson and His Quest for Chinese Art and Culture (Hong Kong University Press, 2013), we journey along with John C. Ferguson as he navigates through a complex and fascinating world of government officials, art dealers, scholars, and museums in China and the US. Ferguson gradually became embedded in a social web whose connections made it possible for him to transform from a minister’s son in rural Ontario to a world-class collector, dealer, and scholar of Chinese art while the very notion of “Chinese art” was still emerging and being debated. Netting’s book charts the early development of Ferguson’s relationships with key figures in the political and social landscape of Qing and Republican China, tracing the ways that these relationships gave him an access to and a perspective on antiquities that would shape his later scholarship and career. For that reason, it offers a wonderful perspective on the history of modern China, and specifically on the role of foreign residents of China in that history. A Perpetual Fire also pays special attention to the making of some important museum collections in Chinese art and antiquities – including the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and of Ferguson himself – and so it is of special import to readers interested in museum studies, in material culture, and in knowing the complex and fascinating history of how the objects hanging on museum walls and illuminated in display cases got there in the first place.
