The Bureau of Land Management oversees 245 million acres of public land across the U.S. More than 60% of that rangeland is being managed through leased livestock grazing allotments in Oregon and nine other Western states. But according to the nonpartisan Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, livestock grazing is the main reason why nearly 60 million acres of BLM rangeland fail the agency’s own standards for land health, which are used to assess soil and water quality, among other factors. High Country News recently reported on PEER’s findings, which also found that BLM state offices are increasingly relying on a federal loophole to renew grazing permits and leases without environmental review, especially in Oregon, Nevada and Idaho. Peter Lattin is a landscape ecologist, geospatial analyst in Oregon who was working for a contractor that was hired by BLM in 2010 to conduct regional ecological assessments. He resigned from his position when he was told by BLM officials not to include the impact of livestock grazing on land health assessments. He then shared his concerns with PEER and worked with the organization to obtain BLM records through the Freedom of Information Act. Lattin and PEER used that data to create an interactive map that shows the impact of livestock grazing on public land. Chandra Rosenthal is the director of PEER’s Rocky Mountain office in Denver. They join us to talk about their findings.

Sometimes you just have to be willing to follow your passions and lean into what you don't know. When Stacy Ward-Lattin and her husband, Torrey, started the Hopping Gnome taproom 6 years ago, they had no idea the adventure they were in for. Stacy joins hosts Don and Ebony to share the Hopping Gnome story, from home brewing to deciding to create something brand new in Wichita. On this episode we discuss: The upcoming 6th anniversary celebration of Hopping Gnome Home brewing competitions Touring the taproom scene in Colorado Wanting to build something in Wichita and help the community Being a cheerleader for activities and events around town Starting a business with zero business background Overcoming the fear of talking about their business idea to get support from others Coming up with the right name and location Relationships with other local brewers in Wichita The reason they used Kickstarter to help launch New partnership with WSU Tech Surviving the COVID-19 pandemic by getting creative and working with the Kansas legislature Ceiling Breakers Podcast All the great things women are doing in the Wichita community Growing new relationships Supporting local artists Learn more about Hopping Gnome:www.hoppinggnome.comFacebook ProfileInstagram ProfileTwitter ProfileCeiling Breakers Podcast Torrey Lattin started home brewing over 6 years ago, and after a couple of years decided to work on a business plan in order to help grow the number of breweries in Wichita. At the time, there were only two brewery/restaurants in the area, and after traveling to Colorado and visiting the small and unique taprooms there, Torrey and his wife Stacy decided this concept would be something fresh and new in Wichita, KS.They decided on a small taproom with a 5 BBL brewing system and distribution plan rather than a restaurant in order to create a beer-focused atmosphere, where friends can get together and play games, order in a pizza, and hang out like it's your friend's house (except you have to pay for the beer...we're trying to run a business here). The couple had several names in mind, but most were already taken or too similar to other established breweries across the US. One night, Torrey was having a beer at home, and noticed a give-away from the 2012 Kansas City Royals All Star game that was a little gnome. He ran upstairs and said “how about Hopping Gnome? You know like hops, and gnomes are known for drinking.” The name stuck and after finding a local graphic designer to create the awesome logo, Hopping Gnome Brewing Company was born. Located in the up-and-coming Douglas Design District, Hopping Gnome Brewing Company joined the growing craft beer community as the first taproom in Wichita, KS.Thanks for listening, be sure to subscribe and leave us a review! The book Changing Our Minds is an experiential tour through a social, spiritual, and scientific revolution that is redefining our culture's often-confusing relationship with psychoactive substances. Its author (and my guest), Don Lattin, is well-researched and well spoken on the subject of psychedelic medicine. Speaking both from professional and personal experiences, he values these drugs for their healing potential, but cautions us – are psychedelics too popular now? Are we giving these powerful substances the respect they need?“I think there's a danger in us forgetting that these drugs are not something to take lightly”Veteran San Francisco based journalist, Don Lattin, is an award-winning journalist and author of six books, including The Harvard Psychedelic Club, published by HarperCollins in 2010, and Changing Our Minds – Psychedelic Sacraments and the New Psychotherapy, released in 2017 by Synergetic Press. Jungian analyst, clinical psychologist and student of AA history Dr. Ian McCabe and Father Bill W. take a deep dive into the insights a Jungian approach to Steps 2 and 3 might convey. Show Notes: Carl Jung and Alcoholics Anonymous by Ian McCabe For information on Bill Wilson's experimentation with LDS see: Distilled Spirits -- Getting High, Then Sober, With a Famous Writer, a Forgotten Philosopher, and a Hopeless Drunk by Don Lattin. Here's a brief outline: Distilled Spirits blends a religion reporter's memoir with the compelling stories of three men--Aldous Huxley, Gerald Heard, and Bill Wilson--who transformed the landscape of Western religion and spirituality in the twentieth century. Huxley, celebrated author of Brave New World, ignited a generation that chased utopian dreams and sought enlightenment through psychedelic drugs. Heard, an Anglo-Irish mystic, journeyed to California with Huxley in the 1930s to lay the foundations for the New Age and human potential movements. Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, joined forces with Huxley and Heard in the 1940s and 1950s, when Wilson began a series of little-known experiments to see if LSD could be used to help diehard drunks. Their life stories are gracefully brought together by veteran journalist Don Lattin. Lattin recounts his own rocky personal journey from 1960s and 1970s counter-culture, through the fast-living, cocaine-fueled 1980s and 1990s, to his long struggle to get sober. By weaving an intimate account of his own recovery with the lives of the book's three central characters, Lattin shows us the redemptive power of storytelling, the strength of fellowship, and the power of living more compassionately, one day at a time. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fatherbillw/support

Teagasc Green Acres programme manager Alan Dillon joins Catherine Egan on this week's episode of the Beef Edge podcast with an update on the dairy calf to beef programme as well as practical beef management tips for the coming weeks. Alan explains that the main points of focus for farmers in the next 6-8 weeks is building grass as well as having a closing plan and it's important to start preparing now for the last grazing rotation. Herd health management is also essential to reduce impact on performance over the winter period and Alan outlines the important steps farmers will need to be taking in preparation for housing. He says that this is the ideal time to take silage samples to analyse the quality of the silage being fed this winter. Based on the results you will know how much and what type of concentrates to feed. The Green Acres programme is also hosting two on-farm events in the coming weeks which farmers can attend and Alan explains that each stage of the system from rearing to finishing will be discussed on the day The on-farm events are: Wednesday, 29 September at 3:30pm on the farm of JP Hammersley, Lattin, Co. Tipperary Eircode E34A389. Pre-booking is essential at (052) 6121300, Teagasc Clonmel. Tuesday, 5 October at 2pm on the farm of Irvine Allen, Mount Temple, Moate, Co. Westmeath. Strength to Strength welcomed Joel Nisly and Dru Lattin to discuss the so-called New Apostolic Reformation. The New Apostolic Reformation, also known as Independent Network Charismatic Christianity is a rapidly-growing and influential global movement led by so-called apostles and prophets who claim an authority like that of the Twelve. While many groups have traditionally used the term apostle to mean one gifted or commissioned as a church planter, this movement views these offices as speaking directly for God.The teachers and theology from this movement are exerting an influence upon the Anabaptist faith tradition. Our goal is to expose these errors, and call us to contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints. An interactive question-and-answer period follows.Recommended article: Dangerous Doctrine: The New Apostolic Reformation in Plain Clothes by Joel Nisly

Located in the up-and-coming Douglas Design District, Hopping Gnome Brewing Company joined the growing craft beer community as the first taproom in Wichita, KS. In this second of a regular monthly 'Beef Edge Masterclass' series from expert farmers on the Beef Edge podcast, Catherine Egan is joined by JP Hammersley a farmer in Lattin, Co. Tipperary. JP explains his system whereby British Friesian bull calves are brought to beef as steers at 24 & 28 months. Calves are purchased from one local dairy farmer at 4 weeks of age and arrive in batches of 12. This has worked well for JP over the years, as he knows he's buying a healthy calf from a known source. A paddock system, consisting of 45 paddocks, has also been installed for the three grazing groups. A considerable amount of re-seeding has also been completed. Cattle are weighed three times during the year – turnout, mid-season, and housing. The aim is to get animals heavy enough to produce a 320kg carcass at 24 months and a 350kg carcass at 28 months. National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed on August 15, 2006, by Dan Lattin, a freelance writer for various publications who had formerly been the Religion Writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and its Sunday Magazine. Published by Harper Collins, the writer is also an author of books about religion, faith, and spirituality. (See DonLattin.com.) This interview occurred 5 months after HBO's premiere of its fictional TV show, "Big Love," about a Mormon Polygamous family. Even so, the writer had done his homework and was aware of the difference between Mormon Polygamy and Christian Polygamy - even knowing about the latter's official standard of "Love-Not-Force." For this interview, the writer was deliberately gathering in-depth information about Christian Polygamy for an essay/article that he would be independently pitching to such various other publications, including Vanity Fair. This hour-long interview provides a comprehensive education about the movement, about its arguments and history, as well as about Mark Henkel himself (even about his church experience and background). Regarding the scriptural and political arguments Mark Henkel makes for Christian Polygamy, the writer himself even positively proclaimed, "I actually think you DO have a very good argument. I mean it's kind of hard to refute your argument." http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

David Lattin, winemaker at Emeritus Vineyards, joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn is also in. Emeritus Vineyards specializes in Russian River Valley estate-grown Pinot Noir. Dan Berger says that this wine is exemplary of Russian River Valley. With all the fog, the land is a little cooler than the rest of the county. Emeritus has made careful selections of which clones are planed in exactly which vineyards. David Lattin says he got into the wine business by being exposed to wine as a child, including when his family lived in Germany for a while. He had a science degree and applied to the UC Davis program for a master's in enology. Emeritus Vineyards only produces Pinot Noir. It's all 100% estate grown. They only harvest at night. Vin Gris literally "gray wine" is a term that means you can get white juice from fresh red grapes, but it will not have color if the skins are not broken into the crush. It's called Halberg Blanc. Halberg is a 110 acre vineyard of theirs. The aroma is minerally and has flavor of faint dried apples. It is sort of a white wine without anything distinctive. It is nice, clean and fresh but not flowery. The finish too is more minerally. It is not austere but it is dry, so it would go well with shellfish. Dan has brought a 2012 Gewürtztraminer from Cathy Corison. The wine label is called Córazon. She gets fruit from Anderson Valley and makes the wine in St. Helena. It is not sweet like some of this varietal. Bryce Jones and Kirk Lokka, his vineyard manager, saw the property in the center of the Russian River AVA "like a flying carpet of Pinot Noir." They decided to apply dry farming which means it is not irrigated. If you water, the roots stay shallow and when you don't, the vines will send roots down to follow the water. He says he has found roots as deep as 18 feet down, in test pits. It takes time to establish and reduces yield, but it is good for the wine. Next they taste a wine called "Don's Block" named after their late winemaker Don Blackburn It is a 2015, called La Combette. Dan Berger says it has strong aromatics and subtle in mid-palette fruit, a great wine. They pick their grapes 3 weeks earlier than anyone else, to get better acid. Dan says this will give the wine great structure. This is $110 here but if this were coming from France it would sell for at least $300. Dan says it will reach an early peak after 10 years. Dan Berger explains that Russian River Valley Pinot Noir wines tend to have a fairly narrow flavor profile. These wines however have a little more substance in the mid-palette. This next tasting is denser but without strong tannins. It has the structure to go well with strong flavored foods like roasts or lamb. Next is the 2013 Pinot Noir from the Halberg Ranch. This is a little more aged than the others. When Pinot Noir gets about 4 to 6 years after the vintage, you begin to see what Pinot Noir will show. It's the best of all the aging wines because you don't have to wait forever. With Cabernet, it can take 10 years before you see it. Pinot Noir has more aromatic diversity. The previous wines tasted were only two years older, but this one has much more than they to. Dan says the limit is about 10 to 12 years. After that, the wine may not get any better. Dan describes it as rich and flavorful. David also notes that this is only from two years' worth of full dry farming. Each subsequent vintage gets more concentrated. The Halberg Ranch is one of Dan's top five vineyards for Pinot Noir in the country. Bryce Jones knew he was making a gamble when he planted Pinot Noir in these vineyards. Many wines by other top winemakers have Halberg Vineyard on the label. BOTTLE BARN is running a flash sale every other Friday and today Barry Herbst has brought a Kuleto Cabernet. This wine sells at $75 per bottle on wine dot com, but they bought it on a close-out and are going to sell it at $27.99.
As we celebrate this Easter Sunday, we remember that Jesus chose to be on the cross, to be betrayed by His friends, and to be beaten and mocked. We have a choice to make today - will we leave the same as we came? His resurrection was the greatest gift we will ever receive, but if we don't really open the gift and just keep playing with the wrapping, we will never get to the depth of the love God gives us in order to be able to share it. Is Jesus just our savior, or is He also our Lord? Have we gotten comfortable to the point where we live like we don't owe God everything? We may be in bondage and not even realize it. Jesus' sacrifice gives us the opportunity to live resurrected lives! We need to identify ourselves by our identity in Christ and walk assured of the power we have in Him to walk out His plan for us. We don't need to try to convince people that we have changed, but we do have to present ourselves in truth. This will require re-introducing ourselves to people who knew us before we came to Christ and we shouldn't tire of this! People need to see Jesus in us as we continue to walk in Him. Jesus told Thomas those who believed without seeing would be blessed - that's us! We must establish ourselves and walk in the giftings that God has given us. Although Jesus was a carpenter by trade, He was also a gifted teacher (they called him Rabbi). He knew His gift and used it to lead the disciples into greater blessings that would increase after He left. Let's renew our minds and continue to remind ourselves who Jesus is! Amen! As the 1950s came to a close, a new era of social, spiritual, sexual, political and psychological revolution was beginning. Here, in this provocative dialogue, you will meet some of the wild characters, who made the 1960s the most memorable decade of the 20th century. Lattin says, "[The] big question at the time was: are these experiences people are having the same as a mystical experience or religious experience? People would report the same kind of things, like a sense of wonder, awe, transcendence, and empathy. . . The important question is what do you do with the experience, and how does it affect the way you live your life? Are you living your life with more awareness and compassion after the experience?" This engrossing program tells the story of how it all began. You will be entertained and perhaps even shocked. Don Lattin is a journalist covering alternative and mainstream religious movements. When we receive a word from someone, even if they are a believer, we still should test it against God's Word. 2 Corinthians 2:4 reminds us that we should speak out of love when we have a healthy burden on our hearts for a fellow Christian. In last week's message, Brent compared us a bit to the Pharisees. That can be hard to hear, but said in love, it should open our eyes to look at where we may be falling short and test that against God's Word. It is easy to react in our flesh when something happens that we don't like, but as a Christian, we are called to respond in a way informed by our faith. It's not really an option for us to do otherwise because a Christian is who we are, not just something we do. When we become a Christian, it's no longer our right to react in our flesh! So often, we say it's hard, but the reality is it isn't hard, it's just unfamiliar territory. When we are born, we don't know how to do everything, we have to learn skills and knowledge, so similarly, we just need to learn how to walk in our faith.
In order to be free to love God and be ourselves, we have to receive the love of God first. God created us in three parts with an order to all of it: a spirit that must be redeemed; a soul that must be restored; and a body that must be re-purposed. 1 Corinthians 2:14 reminds us if we aren't in the Spirit, we won't be able to understand and our bodies and souls can reject the Word. While we are saved at the point of salvation, we aren't mature Christians. It takes time to learn and grow and we must be nurtured in order to reach maturity. God can do an amazing, immediate transformation like He did with Paul, but it may also come in degrees. The enemy can also move us off the right path by degrees, so we must be watchful. As we grow in our spirit, we become one with God - 1 Corinthians 6:17. Christ will often give us a song of our heart. Do you have one? Do you remember it or have you let it leave your heart? The soul is restored when it comes in line with the Holy Spirit. Our soul is also three parts: our mind (thinking and reasoning); our will (making choices); and our emotions (believing, feeling). For our minds - do we know God or do we know of God? Sometimes we don't recognize miracles for what they are or we take credit for them or treat them as normal, such as finding a job that allows us to provide for our family. The miraculous surrounds us everyday if we will look differently at the world around us. It requires us knowing who is driving our thoughts. The good thing is we can change our destination! The body is the last part and involves works, our flesh and all the things we do in our own power. Have you ever noticed the harder you try to get out of sin in your own power, the tighter its grasp seems to be on you? We must be ourselves, especially around the people closest to us. Otherwise, we can't experience the fullness of Christ. Knowing our identity is key to being in the fullness of Christ. Our identity is not what we do for a living. Do you know your identity? If you don't, ask God to show you through His Word. Ephesians 1:4 tells us that He chose us before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. He did so in love. Let's remember that God does not condemn. Galatians 5:19-23 tells us about the fruits of the flesh and the fruits of the Spirit. This is not to condemn, but to warn us, to help us recognize the dangers and to know the benefit of the Spirit. It is then that living in the tree of Life becomes tangible and exciting!

As we celebrate Jesus's birthday, we might ask ourselves whose party is it anyway? Lots of times, you see parties for really young children and they seem to be more for the parents to have the experience since the child is too young to appreciate it. Do we make Jesus's birthday more about us than him? It's really easy to make our prayers a monologue and tell God all that we want, but He doesn't want a monologue - He wants a dialogue with us - a conversation. Joseph heard from God and that led him to stay with Mary when he could have divorced her. Because he was listening to God, he was able to decide to lead his house for the Lord. Who would Jesus want at his party? It would be the people he speaks to and who call on Him frequently, with whom He has a true relationship. Jesus becomes the gift giver to us. James 1:17 tells us every good and perfect gift comes from above. God knows who to give which specific gifts to, making them perfect for each person. Acts 1:8 tells us that power comes after we receive the Holy Spirit. Do we focus sometimes more on the gifts than on the giver? Do we try to cherry-pick the gifts and decide which ones we want? God gives us the gifts He knows will best help us grow in our relationship with Him. We can get stagnant in our gifts. 2 Timothy 1:6-7 is a reminder that gifts need to be stirred up and refreshed to keep the flame going. Ask yourself as we start 2018: Is the Lord happy with my current level of faithfulness? How is my consistency? What can I pray into that I've given up on or feel a sense of powerlessness?
In the Old Testament, people sacrificed animals to move God. Jesus sacrificed his live to save humanity. What will you sacrifice for God to bring fire in your life and be a light to His kingdom.

The last time I had journalist and author Don Lattin on the show, we discussed his book "The Harvard Psychedelic Club," about Timothy Leary and Co. This time, we talked about a previous generation of consciousness raisers. Don's new book, "Distilled Spirits: Getting Drunk, Then Sober with a Famous Writer, A Forgotten Philosopher and a Hopeless Drunk," tells the intersecting stories of Aldous Huxley, spiritual voyager and author of "The Doors of Perception"; his compatriate Gerald Heard, philosophical mystic and early acid head; and Bill Wilson, friend of Heard and founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. The book is also a memoir of Don's own psychedelic experiences, his drug and alcohol addiction and AA-assisted recovery.
