We're doing a "Deep Dive" into our past episodes about "getting our kids to...," from listening to what we say the first time, to talking to us about what matters most to them. Find the rest of the episodes in this deep dive series in this Spotify playlist. Getting your kid to talk to you is never easy (unless you're standing with car keys in hand, front door ajar, 15 minutes late for an appointment). Here are some parenting strategies that work to get kids talking at every age. Based upon empirical evidence, “How was school today?” is the most annoying question a mom could ever ask. So why bother trying? Because Jennifer Kolari, author of Connected Parenting: How to Raise a Great Kid, says getting our kids to open up is part of our job description: It's our job as parents to help our kids sort through and process the things that happen to them during the day. “They don't have the higher-order thinking to do it on their own yet. In this episode we lay out what gets our kids to talk– at every age and stage. Margaret says you have to “talk the talk that arrives.” But Amy comes at it armed with research; if her ninth-grader wants to talk NBA draft, she's ready to lean in. Both of us plan to work on what Marie Roker Jones calls “listening with the intent to understand.” Here's links to some research and hilarious takes on this topic that we mention in this episode: Alice Bradley for Lifehacker Offspring: Stop Asking Your Kid About Their Day Marie Roker-Jones for Good Men Project: 10 Ways to Get Your Son to Open Up and Talk to You Clare Gagne for Today's Parent: Age-By-Age Guide To Getting Your Kid To Talk Liz Evans for Huffington Post: 25 Ways to Ask Your Kids ‘So How Was School Today?' Family mealtime and the conversation that goes along with it provide longterm benefits for children and teens. These include better physical health, stronger parent-child relationships, better school performance, lower risk of substance abuse, better vocabulary, and greater resilience. But many families struggle to get everyone at the table at the same time, let alone prepare a healthy meal or have a meaningful or entertaining conversation. Busy schedules, both for parents and kids, are one major obstacle to family mealtime, but families also cite picky eaters and the distractions of devices as challenges. The Family Dinner Project, a nonprofit initiative based in Boston, has been helping families overcome those obstacles for ten years, helping families find fun and laughter at the same time. They recently released Eat, Laugh,Talk: The Family Dinner Playbook, a cookbook (and much more!) that has Marti & Erin excited to use it with their family. Dr. Anne Fishel, Executive Director of The Family Dinner Project, joins Marti & Erin to explore creative ways families can schedule family mealtime and make it interesting and fun. In addition to directing this nonprofit, Anne also is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Harvard Medical School and Director of the Family and Couple Therapy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Reflecting on that experience, Anne affirms the value of family mealtime, saying with a laugh, “If more families had family dinner, I think I'd be out of business as a family therapist.” DO YOU LONG FOR FAMILY MEALS & CONVERSATION THAT GO BEYOND FROZEN PIZZA AND "HOW WAS YOUR DAY?" Early in the project I was talking through my ideas with my kids. They don’t know a lot about content creation or marketing, but they’re pretty honest and they tell me what they really think. They asked if they could be on an episode and I thought, of course! It’s a parenting podcast, but one with a broad interest in parenting as an enormous concept. And, while we focus mostly on moms, we’re bringing other demographics – dads, grandmas, non-parents, foster/adoptive parents – into the mix as well. So why not kiddos? Then, last Thursday night, I realized I was going to have to interview my kids. Good God, you guys. I used to dread interviewing kids for the newspaper. They’re tough nuts to crack, they need really concrete questions to which they can give super concrete answers, and even then it’s a crap shoot. I was usually happy as hell to walk away from an interview with an elementary school aged child with one or two full quotes and enough basic information to sketch something out that would fit enough column inches to make it worth the time.See the full show notes here!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/twomomsdaydrinking)
