On this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with Nickolai Miotto, a member of Operating Engineers 324 working on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Following his appearance, Andy Doctoroff, the point person on the project for the Michigan governor's office, visits again to offer an update on the project's progress. Ahead of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's 2022 State of the State address next week, Miotto was featured in a video series produced to highlight components of the speech. Miotto talks about how he made his way into the training program to become an equipment operator and what it means to be working on such an iconic project. In the video, he touts the importance of infrastructure investment to job creation and economic development and why he thinks it spells good things for the future of Michigan. In the second segment, Doctoroff offers highlights on the project's status, including significant work on the Michigan interchanges that will serve bridge users. He also marvels at the towers going up, which will eventually soar more than 700 feet into the sky, nearing the height of the Renaissance Center.Doctoroff also talks about the robust engagement process to keep members of communities on both sides of the border engaged and up to date on developments. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority produced this virtual tour to illustrate progress.Podcast photo: New Gordie Howe International Bridge tower being constructed.

“I'm drawing a line in the sand and showing my face for what I believe is right. I'm Standing with the intention to show enough is enough.”—Brady Gunn, Founder of ASITP As many of you know, each Sunday morning I take part in "A Stand in the Park" in a nearby town here in Lancashire. Over the months I have been attending, I have found the experience very encouraging, not least because it has been great to talk to people who have similar (not identical) concerns about the way the world seems to be going, particularly since the so-called "pandemic". So, I thought it would be good to share something of that experience with TMR listeners—in the form of an "audio diary" (which I've done before)—just to give a sense of the atmosphere of the Stands and to give an idea of the kinds of conversation that can take place. So, please do join me—and my gracious friends at the Stand, who kindly agreed to speak for this recording—and consider it an encouragement to check out your local Stand (if there is one) and perhaps make it part of your own Sunday routine. Friend, comrade, fellow podcaster, and University of Pennsylvania Ph.D. candidate Devin Daniels joins us to discuss Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955)! Devin is the co-host of You're Tall but I'm Standing in Front of You, and he's with us for a fun romp about an ordinary guy who likes maps and trips to Italy and is in no way weird or sinister. He is not a confidence man in any way and definitely doesn't kill people with ashtrays. We discuss gender construction, surveillance mechanisms, self-making, and queerness. We also consider the ethics of telling people about your European vacations and if you should ever do that. We read the Vintage edition. We mention it on the episode and recommend Erin Carlston's book Double Agents, which is about queer fiction and spying in 20th century literature. And we really really insist that you go check out the cluster of essays that Devin and Kimberly Andrews edited for Post45's Contemporaries series on Nic f*cking Cage. In a poem considering trees, Jason Allen-Paisant opens up many associations with trees: in a woodland, there's a dead tree, from which new forms of life are finding sustenance. He, a Black man in the woods, is aware of people looking suspiciously at him. The poem reflects on how trees were used for building the ships of enslavers, who considered countries and people their property. In light of this, he shares a nature poem about all the things that nature holds.Jason Allen-Paisant is a Jamaican poet whose first poetry collection, Thinking with Trees, was published by Carcanet Press in 2021. His work has also appeared in PN Review, the Poetry Review and Callaloo. He teaches in the School of English at the University of Leeds.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

“I'm drawing a line in the sand and showing my face for what I believe is right. I'm Standing with the intention to show enough is enough.”—Brady Gunn, Founder We are joined by Sophia Rose ("FiFi"), the founder of A Stand In The Park (UK), for a conversation on the history and aims of this difficult-to-define, but hugely important, global movement of concerned citizens. "A Stand in the Park unites people in parks all over the world every Sunday morning, 10 - 11 am local time. We Stand in the Park to celebrate freedom, diversity and fairness for all. Brady Gunn started A Stand in the Park in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia. Brady made a Stand, alone at first, for his personal truth. In Brady's early Facebook videos he talked about making a Stand for freedom—for our elderly, our children, our jobs and small businesses—against lockdowns, harmful new laws, the ‘pandemic' and the people behind ‘The Great Reset'. Brady invited others to join him and Stand in THEIR personal truth. It took almost three months, but eventually they came. At the beginning of 2021 he reconnected with his UK-based friend FiFi Rose, and she was profoundly inspired by the message. FiFi worked tirelessly to spread the Stands to every corner of the British Isles. Since then, the concept has well and truly caught fire, and there are now about 1000 parks participating every Sunday morning across Australia, New Zealand, England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, Denmark, Hungary, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Malta, Germany, France, Mexico, Canada and the USA." In the fourth episode of The Vinyl Supper, guest Chrissy Metz opens with a bang, asking Foy: “Is that your real name?” (It is.) And from that, the two are chatting like old friends. The star of This is Us and Breakthrough gets deep with Foy over the danger of ‘shoulda coulda woulda's' and finding God within music. She talks working with Mandy Moore and how the show helped her get started in music: “If my character does it, why can't I?” Chrissy calls music her first love, and Foy gets at the heartwarming story of how she made that love into a dream come true. Before quarantine, Chrissy was real busy: performing “I'm Standing with You” at the Oscars, and she recently co-wrote her newest song “Actress” with Nicolette Hayford, Matt McGinn, and Nathan Spicer. From quarantine in Nashville, Chrissy is now writing and recording her debut country music album. In the meantime, follow up with Chrissy by reading her memoir This Is Me, which debuted on the NYT bestseller list at #1, or watch out every month for her Chrissy's Most Loved Picks in conjunction with Walmart. This episode was recorded in July 2020. Visit TheVinylSupper.com for more information on this podcast and video series.
