Resilience is “about being tough, but it's also about being flexible, and truly resilient leaders know when to be which,” Heather McKissick, I-CUDE, says in the latest episode of the CUES Podcast. McKissick is the CEO of CUES.The decision about when to be tough and when to be flexible, McKissick explains, “depends on the forces that we are up against—because some things you can predict because of wisdom or history or experience, and other things are unpredictable. And there are times when you have no choice but to work with what you've got in order to withstand and … keep moving forward.”Being able to be agile, being able to forecast situations and “respond and test and pivot and change and not hold steadfast” to legacy policies or procedures is important, she says, “because if we hold too strongly to those things, we may get left behind.”“Some organizations that don't have that same kind of spirit of experimentation or transformation when it comes to how they serve their members and experience lag, … attrition, … a lack of engagement or satisfaction by their members because the organization that they're looking to to help them through some of the most challenging times in their careers or in their lives isn't able to keep up with the challenges and changes all around them.”In addition to resilient leadership, this show also gets intoMcKissick's vision for magnifying the good that credit unions and their leaders are doing all the time—and how CUES can support thatThe value of credit union industry players having conversations that would support taking the ongoing cooperative work of credit unions to the next levelHow McKissick applies her ideas about resilience to potentially disruptive technology like generative AIThe importance of learning about new technology from credible sourcesHow CUES can help credit union leaders and their organizations build resilience going forward, which in turn will build CUES' resilienceLinks for this show:McKissick's “banana bread column”McKissick is the guest in this video: Resilient Leaders Leverage Dynamic IntegrationCUES EmergeCEO Institute: FinTech Transcript

Back in the spring of 1963, civil rights leader Floyd McKissick, Sr. invited Malcolm X to the Triangle for a debate about assimilation versus integration within the fight for equality. The debate almost didn't happen when the city of Durham pulled its support and venue -- eventually a new venue was found, and McKissick Sr.'s young son Floyd McKissick Jr. was among those in the audience. McKissick Jr. recounts a childhood framed by the movement: from the steady stream of civil rights leaders visiting his family home who were “like uncles," to supporters sitting on his porch at night with shotguns to protect him and his family. McKissick Jr. talks with WRAL anchor and reporter Ken Smith about his early experiences on picket lines and on the front lines of school integration, and how his childhood of activism led to a lifetime of public service.
Floyd McKissick Sr. worked with civil rights leaders that including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X. When race kept him from getting into UNC Law School, McKissick fought back in court and won. Eventually, his case would be used as the basis for the landmark desegregation case, Brown v. Board of Education. Reporter and anchor Ken Smith interviewed his son Floyd McKissick Jr. who shares his father's legacy as WRAL continues to celebrate Black History Month.
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.24.529744v1?rss=1 Authors: Dorst, K. E., Senne, R. A., Diep, A. H., de Boer, A. R., Suthard, R. L., Leblanch, H., Ruesch, E. A., Skelton, S., McKissick, O. P., Bladon, J. H., Ramirez, S. Abstract: Memory engrams are both necessary and sufficient to mediate behavioral outputs. Defensive behaviors such as freezing and avoidance are commonly examined during hippocampal-mediated fear engram reactivation, yet how reactivation of these cellular populations across different contexts engages the brain to produce a variety of defensive behaviors is relatively unclear. To address this, we first optogenetically reactivated a tagged fear engram in the dentate gyrus (DG) subregion of the hippocampus across three distinct contexts. We found that there were differential amounts of light-induced freezing depending on the size of the context in which reactivation occurred: mice demonstrated robust light-induced freezing in the most spatially restricted of the three contexts but not in the largest. We then utilized graph theoretical analyses to identify brain-wide alterations in cFos co-activation during engram reactivation across the smallest and largest contexts. Our manipulations conferred greater positive cFos correlations and recruited regions spanning putative fear and defense systems as hubs in the respective networks. Moreover, reactivating DG-mediated engrams generated network topologies across experimental conditions, emphasizing both shared and distinct features. By identifying and manipulating the circuits supporting memory function, as well as their corresponding brain-wide activity patterns, it is thereby possible to resolve systems-level biological mechanisms mediating memory's capacity to modulate behavioral states. Stay tuned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening. Now on to my guest for today, Will McKissick, Chief Strategy Officer for mePrism, a company striving to give consumers more control over their personal data. mePrism offers an app that allows consumers to learn how their data is learned, secure it, and control it. Will joined mePrism while he was still studying economics at Middlebury College. His first year of college, he interned at an investment firm, thinking he'd follow the path many of his fellow economics majors were on. Then, after reading an article on Medium and doing some soul-searching, he realized he wanted to take a different path. In his coursework he was exploring the issues around the use of private data and serendipitously met the CEO of mePrism, which was working on a solution to the problem. Will explains that he sees mePrism as offering a way for companies and consumers to "walk the line" between controlling personal data and sharing it with companies. Our personal data is our property, something that nobody else can own, and up until now companies have had nearly total free rein to collect and use the data for marketing. mePrism wants to give control over their data back to consumers: how it's collected, used, and shared. With a growing movement for more control over personal data, businesses will need to develop other strategies for marketing. Building trust with consumers will need to become paramount. Will doesn't think he or his company has all the answers, but he sees the entrepreneurial journey about figuring it out as you go. Now, let's get better together. Actionable Insights Will credits reading "Climbing the Wrong Hill" by Chris Dixon as being instrumental in his decision to change course from the path he thought he'd follow. When he got a clearer vision of where he wanted to go, a path opened up to him. If you (or your company) currently use ads or other methods that depend on tracking and collecting data without permission, ask if this is something that's most useful to your long-term goals. Consumers are already expressing a desire to have more control over their data. Will predicts that in the future the sharing of data will be "more collaborative" between consumers and companies. Focus instead on providing good content and building a relationship with potential customers. Hello, I'm Amanda McNutly with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. As a young child, I began using U S C's McKissick Museum - at that time it was a library. Today its mission statement includes these words “The University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum fosters awareness and appreciation for the diversity of the region's culture, history, and natural environment.” When the state of Pearl Fryar's topiary garden and Mr. Fryar's health was brought to director Jane Przybysz attention, she began work on a way to preserve this regional and national treasure. Eventually, with cooperation with the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the museum got funding for a topiary artist in residence – I'm sure that's a first, and Mike Gibson, a self-taught and self-described property artist, is working with Fryar in his Bishopville garden. McKissick is to me an overlooked treasure for our state, please visit it on the old horseshoe.
