It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is Guilty by Association by TG WolffGuilty by Association is legal mystery. While waiting for the results of an internal affairs hearing, Miami detective Seth Rizk returns to Indiana to repay a debt posthumously. The retired cop who once helped solve the Rizk family's greatest tragedy has been found dead under suspicious circumstances. He leans into the resources of his twin brother Jakob, the interim attorney general for Indiana. But Seth's sins in Miami follow him north, and Jakob is caught in the storm. His campaign team issues an ultimatum: cut ties with your brother or lose the election.Bottom line: Guilty by Association is for you if you like mysteries that are a well-blended mix of heart, brains, and tensionThe story is told from alternative points of view. Seth Rizk is a detective in Miami who faced an internal panel after rearranging the face of Detective Edward Bridges. On leave without pay, low on funds, and sick of his own company, Seth is the white night who does mind his cape getting dirty.Jakob Rizk unwillingly became the interim attorney general for Indiana and now is embroiled in a campaign to keep the job. With too many commitments, a wife pregnant with twins, and a brother in danger of losing his career, Jakob is the white knight who makes sure his cape stays the color of snow. The mystery is about the suspicious death of Captain Declan Jameson, retired. Jameson was living at a high-end rehab facility after a car accident rearranged one of his legs. After no-showing on a date, he was found days later washed up on a drainage pipe. Originally ruled an accident, Seth investigates and finds that something does stink. The trail leads straight web of fraud, theft, ambition—and a motive worth killing to protect. When this was recorded, Guilty by Association was not out. I am going to share a few excerpts from reviews of the first book, Murder on Site, that talk to the storytelling style."Perfect pacing, memorable characters, and liberal doses of danger and deception -- and humor -- will keep readers thoroughly entertained and engaged. Highly recommend." - Hall Ways Blog"I loved how the story kept making me question what justice actually means following the law or doing what is right. Overall, this book feels like one of those hidden gems which is fast-paced, thought-provoking, and hard to put down." - Sudeshna Blogs"Great characters and an intriguing murder mystery land this book on my list of top books of the year! While the subject, a tragic murder, is serious, the author works quite a bit of humor into the story through dialogue. I happily read this book in one sitting, riveted by its pages." - Guatemala Paula Loves to ReadGuilty by Association is the 2nd book in the Rizk Brothers Legal Mysteries series. BONUS AI in Organizations Track Preview With Michał Parkoła and Michael Dougherty

BONUS: AI Won't Just Change How You Work — It Will Reshape Your Organization The Global Agile Summit is around the corner, and the AI in Organizations track is one you don't want to miss. In this episode, track co-hosts Michael Dougherty and Michał Parkoła walk us through what they've built — from the thinking behind the track name to the sessions that stood out, and why this isn't just another AI conference lineup. Why "AI in Organizations" — Not Just "AI" "AI will not only be useful to existing organizations, but it will reshape organizations in a very significant way, the same way cars reshaped cities."   Michael and Michał drew a deliberate line with the track name. Michael points out that AI has been around for decades — it didn't start with ChatGPT. The real shift now is AI agents scaling to enterprise level, replacing automation that used to require specialized tools. Claude Enterprise holds about 29% of the enterprise AI market, Gemini around 15%. But Michał pushes the framing further: the first-order effect is applying AI to existing work. The second-order effect — the one he's most interested in — is how AI will reshape organizations themselves. New species of companies will emerge, smaller teams will achieve what used to require hundreds of people, and some existing organizations won't survive the transition. That's the conversation this track is designed to start. Filtering the Signal From the Slop "There was a bit of AI slop in the submissions. There was a lot of talk that, unfortunately, was meta-talk — there was no real value that I could glean."   When session submissions came in, Michael was disappointed by how many were surface-level — big promises with no practical takeaway. The ones that stood out were practitioners showing what they actually do. Dave Westgarth, for example, demonstrated how he uses AI with Lovable and Claude embedded in Miro whiteboards to enhance real team interactions. On Michał's side, the standout was Max Pirata, who challenged the "vibe coding is slop" narrative. His argument: the quality of large-scale software has never depended on the infallibility of individual engineers — it depends on disciplined engineering processes. The same applies to agentic engineering. Your first attempt at vibe coding will be rough, but there are ways to apply engineering discipline to AI-assisted development. That's what Max will be talking about at the summit. Prototyping at the Speed of Thought — And the Human Bottleneck "Now I've got 20 prototypes that I can choose from. Which ones are the best? Which ones do I need to clear out? Product managers now have a different game they play."   Two sessions capture opposite sides of the AI-in-organizations tension. Dave Westgarth's "Vibe UX: Prototyping at the Speed of Thought" shows how vibe coding lets you build full working systems instead of Figma mockups — so fast that the bottleneck shifts from creation to selection. Product managers and product owners now face a new challenge: clearing the closet of AI-generated options rather than validating a single bet. On the other side, Shawn Wallack's session — "Even With AI, Your System Will Never Be Better Than Its People" — brings the counterpoint. Michael explains the systems-thinking angle: AI does what you tell it, fast and accurately, but that speed reveals human bottlenecks everywhere else. He shares the cautionary example of AI declining twice the insurance claims humans did, with the human-in-the-loop rubber-stamping instead of actually checking — leading to a class action lawsuit. The lesson: AI doesn't remove the need for human judgment, it makes it more critical. Gojko Adzic on Spec-Driven Development and Building AI Products "True to his roots, he is exploring spec-driven development now, which is one of the popular threads in agentic engineering."   Gojko Adzic — the author of Specification by Example and Impact Mapping — brings heavyweight credibility to the track. Michał reveals that while Gojko is exploring spec-driven development in the context of agentic engineering, the interview focused more on his hands-on experience building his own AI products. For attendees, this means real practitioner insights from someone who literally wrote the book on how specifications drive software quality — now applying those principles in an AI-first world. From Beginner to Builder — Who This Track Is For "My favorite case would be people who will quit their jobs and start new companies that will be able to achieve wonderful things with much smaller teams than we would otherwise imagine possible."   The track is designed to meet people wherever they are. Pierre Beaning covers the basics of using Claude for beginners. Jason Little — who Michael describes as a "techno nerd" and "grand poobah" — shows how to build and scale multi-agent systems for business. The spectrum runs from "I've only used AI to plan a vacation" to "I'm orchestrating agent teams." But Michał's vision for the ideal attendee is bolder: someone who walks away ready to start a company. Michael backs this up with the story of an AI unicorn — $1.8 billion valuation, one guy and his brother, in the pharmaceutical industry, just a few months old. Hype? Maybe. But Michał's pragmatic take lands it: "If you make a few million, even if it dies later, that's not such a bad thing." The goal of the track is to blow away the fog — throw flares into key spots so people can sketch a map of what's possible and decide which areas deserve a follow-up. Jason Little, Lead of The Cannabis Practice Team at Farrell Fritz, returns to discuss the recent federal appeals court ruling that New York State's cannabis licensing criteria, which excluded individuals with federal or out-of-state cannabis convictions from receiving priority, were likely unconstitutional. They also discussed how tariffs impact the cannabis industry and how potential federal tax relief from an end to IRS code 280E could offset increased costs from tariffs. Additionally, they considered the less discussed benefit of declassification: the increased ability for research and development dollars to flow into the cannabis market.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Many states have laws allowing for the safe and legal surrender of infants, something that was enacted to combat the abandonment of babies. Founded in 2015 by Monica Kelsey of the small city of Woodburn, Indiana, Safe Haven Baby Boxes are constructed boxes that hold a baby similar to a bassinette. These are installed in secure locations, including fire stations, with alarming to indicate to those inside that a child has been placed inside. The babies are attended to within minutes and ultimately entrusted to the local Child Protection.https://www.shbb.org/

BONUS: How to create psychological safety at work with Mehmet Baha   In this BONUS episode, we talk about the essential elements of creating psychological safety at work with Mehmet Baha, one of Facebook's first European employees and a renowned psychological safety expert. Drawing from his extensive experience and new book, Baha shares practical tools, inspiring examples, and thought-provoking insights that can help transform workplace culture. This episode builds on Mehmet's guest blog post on the concepts we discuss. You can find Baha's guest blog post on psychological safety here.  The Power of the 16-32-64 Framework The conversation begins with Baha introducing his innovative "16-32-64" framework, a comprehensive approach that combines head (cognition), heart (emotion), and hands (practice). This framework provides 16 inspiring examples, 32 practical tools, and 64 questions designed to foster psychological safety in the workplace. Baha explains how this interactive approach encourages readers to reflect and take action, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with professionals worldwide in developing these thought-provoking questions.   "When I was writing the book, I thought about how I could make this interactive. How can I make readers take action? So, I realized that questions are a powerful tool to help readers to reflect and take these ideas into action." Debunking Psychological Safety Myths Baha addresses three major misconceptions about psychological safety that often hinder organizational progress. He emphasizes that psychological safety isn't just about being nice or avoiding difficult conversations, nor is it solely about encouraging conflict. Through real-world examples, including a compelling story about a mining company leader who transformed workplace safety through psychological safety principles, Baha demonstrates how this approach can drive tangible business results.   "According to research, when employees feel that their opinions count, we see happiness, reduction in turnover and more productivity." Practical Tools for Immediate Implementation The discussion explores two powerful tools from Baha's collection of 32 practical approaches. The first tool, "Movers, Movables, Immovables," (from Jason Little's Lean Change Management) helps leaders navigate resistance to change by identifying different employee groups and focusing on achievable wins. The second tool, the "Green Card" technique, demonstrates how one director successfully transformed a silent team into an engaged workforce by explicitly encouraging dissent.   "Don't spend so much of our time with resistance. Find the movers, and find the small-wins."   The Journey of Self-Reflection Baha emphasizes the critical role of self-reflection in developing psychological safety. He outlines a progression from awareness to action, stressing that leadership transformation begins with self-awareness and requires consistent application of knowledge.   "Everything in life starts from within. Without leading ourselves, we can't lead others." My need to create for creation's sake and grief. The idea of “Honorable” began as a 3-minute scene where Ali & Malcolm X would simply have a conversation. The plan was for me to write it and Jason Little who plays Malcolm X in the film and Zach Clark who portrays Muhammad Ali to star in it. All three of us just worked together on a play called “The Meeting,” and it was super successful so I was condent in what they could do. However, in the same year I was dreaming this up, I was also processing the death of my friend, who was also an actor, my first producing partner, and 27 when he passed. I knew nothing about Ali and Malcolm's brotherhood, but once I began researching it, I came across Ali's quote in his autobiography and it triggered deep sorrow and and a desire for Asa to have a second chance at life. I wrote to get it out. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your lm in the feedback video? I stopped breathing. I cried then I thanked God. Lean change and agile change management are becoming more popular terms these days, but do we know what they really mean? My guest today is prolific author and international speaker, Jason Little and we're talking about what lean and agile change management actually looks like in practice and how to integrate it into your change management program. Jason Little is the founder of Lean Change and the author of three books, including Change Agility, Lean Change Management and Agile Transformation: A Guide to Organizational Change.  In addition to revolutionising the world of change, he's also CTO of Spero Careers Canada, a company dedicated to solving the autism employment crisis. He is a true pioneer in the change management space. In this episode, Jason and I cover the core principles of lean change and how to start integrating lean and agile change practices into your project, particularly when your organisation is used to more traditional change management approaches. Jason shares some insightful recommendations such as using a change canvas, running lean coffee sessions and creating feedback loops. We talk about these in more detail and how you can start implementing them, starting today. Lean change management is all about being as lightweight and efficient as possible while embracing startup thinking. The goal is to initiate change without drowning in unnecessary processes, which is something that often happens in larger organisations. Jason shares how placing an emphasis on conversation and obtaining feedback puts people in the centre of the change management program, instead of using change to simply drive results.Feedback is a driving force behind effective change management. Jason explains how constructive feedback loops help to course-correct and plan in shorter time frames, understanding that we don't need to map out every single step. Implementing practices like lean coffee sessions encourages open dialogue and attendee-driven meetings, which can be a welcome shift from traditional change processes. We also talk about the common dilemma of aligning the change process with the agile technical team while still satisfying the need for extensive documentation. This is where lean and agile change practices can shine. Instead of imposing changes drastically, Jason suggests swimming with the current and introducing fresh approaches to introduce change without alarming the status quo.For change managers looking to introduce lean and agile change practices, it's best to start with baby steps. Co-creative change canvas sessions and lean coffee meetings are excellent ways to introduce new techniques without overwhelming the organisation. Remember, it's about finding the right balance between adhering to the established norms and introducing new ideas.LINKSResources Mentioned:BooksConnect with Jason Little:Websites:https://leanchange.org/ & http://agilecoach.ca/LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonlittle/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/lean_changeConnect with me: Download my Energy Management Toolkit here!Website:            https://www.everchange.com.au/LinkedIn:

Having designed and chaired over 20 change management conferences across North America I've seen and heard some of the continent's top change management experts.  Too many rely too heavily on models and loose sight of the people and the goals of change.  Not Jason.  While applying many of the principles of lean change he remains focussed on what works.  And if ever there was a time to focus on what works rather than change models it's now.In this episode Jason discusses the importance of the following:1.Putting Cause and Purpose above Urgency2. Replacing Communication with Meaning and Dialogue3. Thinking about Experimentation not Execution4. Rejecting notions of Resistance - think instead of Response5. Seeking opportunities for Co-Creation not Buy-InWe also talk about my least favourite change metaphor - "The Burning Platform"If you're not going through change right now you can safely ignore this episode.  If you are you might want to check it out.

Since 2007, he's helped countless organizations implement Agile practices and flourish into the future. Jason is the author of Lean Change Management: Innovative Practices for Managing Organizational Change, and the creator of a video series, “Agile Transformation — A Guide to Organizational Change”. You will particularly enjoy the “Lean Coffee” concept he shares as part of the “selling” process for change management. Questions Asked: How did you get into the change management field? Where do you look for inspiration in your work? What do you do in your work to offset organization dynamics that counter change management initiatives? How do you work with an executive who's used to having a traditional messaging plan, when creating agile dialogues? When we look at large-scale facilitation techniques, what are some examples that work well for the agile process? What are some best practices for doing agile transformation with virtual teams? With all of the interest in “agile” lately, what do you see happening in the industry? In terms of disruption, what do you see happening with agile work, and the way it interrelates with problems with business disruption? What is the Global Lean Change Agent Network? How is it impacting the change management community? What is the one piece of advice that you would give to a newcomer in the change management field?

And here it is, the third (and final) of the three on-location shows of interviews Derek and Andy W. conducted while at last weekend's Small Press Expo. At the event, the Two Guys spoke with a number of creators attending SPX, interviewing each for anywhere from 5 to around 20 minutes. In some cases, the guys are quite familiar with the artist's works (and may even have reviewed their comics on past episodes). At other times, Andy or Derek may not know the work of the creator, but use the interview opportunity to learn more about the artist. In this episode, you will hear conversations with Amy Godfrey & Patrick Holt, Will Dinski, R. Sikoryak, Jay Hosler, Nick Bertozzi, Jason Little, Simon Rinehardt, and Mickey Zacchilli. The exhibition hall of SPX 2015 was packed, and, as a result, the din of the crowd was at times difficult to talk over. But the Two Guys addressed the sound challenges as best they could. Sometimes they talked with the creators at their tables, and at other times -- such as the interviews with R. Sikoryak, Nick Bertozzi, and Jason Little -- they were able to find a space away from the exhibition floor where the sound was less chaotic. The first two segments of the guys' on-location interview shows from SPX went up on Thursday and on Friday. And be sure to check out Derek's much longer conversation with Bill Griffith that was released separately.

Episode 154 - SPX 2015 and the Ignatz Awards

The Comics Alternative

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2015 146:29

This week's episode of the podcast is special, and in a number of ways. First, Derek and Andy W. record the show "live" from a common location and not from a distance via Skype. Also, they discuss their experiences at this year's Small Press Expo, which took place September 19-20. Most importantly, though, this episode is notable for its focus on the 2015 Ignatz Awards, the first time that the Two Guys have discussed this industry recognition in any in-depth manner.  In fact, almost the entire episode is devoted to the Ignatz nominees, a substantial number of texts, and as a result, this show goes longer than usual. And they break up recording the show over a two-day period: the first third after day one of SPX (and before the Ignatz winners have been announced), and the final segment after the event has ended. Andy and Derek begin by sharing some of their experiences at SPX, including the people they met, the creators they talked with, the small press publishers who attended, and the general demographics of the crowd (this was a con that definitely skewed young). Then they go into a rundown of all the 2015 Ignatz Award nominees, discussing the nine different categories and briefly highlighting the five nominees under each. There are some categories, such as "Outstanding Anthology or Collection," that the guys find a little problematic. Both Andy and Derek feel that a collection by a single artist and an anthology comprising a variety are completely different beasts and, as such, shouldn't be clumped together in this manner. There are others, including "Promising New Talent" and "Outstanding Comic," that would benefit by clearer context. (For example, what exactly defines a "new talent," and how   might an "outstanding comic" be distinguished from an "outstanding graphic novel"?) In the final segments of the episode -- the last 2/3 that was recorded after that final day of SPX -- Derek and Andy go into detail about many of the titles nominated for an Ignatz. They list the winners of each category, which were made public on Saturday night of the con, and provide a few observations. The Ignatz Awards winners are chosen by popular vote, anyone who attends the event can cast a ballot, so the Two Guys with PhDs take some of the results with a sizable grain of salt. For example, they're surprised by the fact that neither Noah Van Sciver and Ethan Riley (both highly accomplished and nominated multiple times) received anything. Or that Drawn and Quarterly: 25 Years of Contemporary Cartooning, Comics, and Graphic Novels was shut out. Or how Sophia Foster-Dimino came out as she did. Still, one of the most notable takeaways from this year's ceremony is the fact that women completely swept the awards, so this is definitely a year of significance. After a brief discussion of the winners, Andy and Derek get into a detailed analysis of may of the nominated titles, especially focusing on those works they've not yet discussed on previous episodes. These include Ed Luce's Wuvable Oaf (Fantagraphics), Jillian Tamaki's SuperMutant Magic Academy (Drawn and Quarterly) and "Sex Coven" (from Frontier #7, published by Youth in Decline), M. Dean's K.M. & R.P. & MCMLXXI (1971), Walter Scott's Wendy (Koyama Press), Gina Wyndbrandt's Big Pussy (2D Cloud), Jason Little's Borb (Uncivilized Books), John Porcellino's King Cat #75, and Georgia Webber's Dumb series. There are so many great titles to cover, and as a result, the show goes longer than the guys anticipated. But that's OK. SPX and the Ignatz Awards only come once a year, so why not take advantage of this celebrated occasion?
