In this episode of Intellicast, host Brian Peterson is joined by Mary Draper and Aron Wilson for a timely and candid discussion about the state of data quality in market research. The team unpacks the recent indictment involving OP4G and Slice MR, accused of orchestrating a $10 million fraud scheme using fabricated survey data. They explore how this scandal highlights long-standing challenges around fraud detection, insider manipulation, and the limitations of current quality safeguards. The conversation also recaps key insights from the recent Insights Association Ignite Data Quality Conference, including the growing push for sample transparency, the nuanced role of ISO certifications, and the critical need for a respondent-first approach to survey design. With perspectives from both supplier and full-service backgrounds, this episode explores how the industry can work together to raise the bar for quality, combat fraud, and ultimately rebuild trust. Whether you're a panel provider, research buyer, or full-service agency, this episode is packed with insights you don't want to miss. Want a better understanding of EMI data quality processes? Welcome back to Intellicast! Joining Brian Peterson on today's episode to give a recap of Quirks Chicago are Gabby Blados and, for the first time, Abby Snyder. The three jump right in with Gabby, who had attended four different Quirks Events, and Abby, who attended her first Quirks Event, giving their overall impression of Quirks. Gabby felt this one was the best one she had attended. Next, Gabby and Abby discuss the overall trend and themes from Quirks. In addition to AI (which was a given), Gabby discusses the focus on data quality, from new tools to help ensure it to how we as researchers can do things differently to help improve quality. Abby then discussed a few of her key takeaways from the conference, including how she felt it was important to connect with colleagues she normally communicates with on a daily basis but never met face-to-face. Gabby talked about her favorite session, which featured Hills Science, which she and her family used for their pets growing up. In the wrap-up, Abby and Gabby discuss some of their non-conference-related adventures while in Chicago, like visiting a Wicked pop-up bar. Thanks for listening! If you have headed to New York for IA Ignite Data Quality, be sure to say hello to Mary Draper and Aron Wilson. Welcome back to Intellicast! Joining Brian Peterson on this jam-packed episode is Gabby Blados. They talk about conferences, data quality, as well as discuss some recent headlines from around the research world. Kicking off the episode, Brian and Gabby talk about the upcoming conferences, including SampleCon and Quirks Chicago. With Gabby attending Quirks, she gives Brian a preview of some of the topics, sessions, and activities she most looks forward to while in Chicago in early April. Next, Brian and Gabby turn their sights to the latest market research news, starting with the launch of the Global Data Quality Initiative updated Data Quality Pledge. Brian and Gabby discuss how they feel this is a step in the right direction to improve overall data quality. They are hesitant, though, since it is a pledge, and there is no one to hold people accountable to its standard other than self-regulation. They both agree that the pledge is probably a step toward some sort of regulation around data quality. In the second data quality story, they discuss the results and key takeaways from the new Data Quality Benchmarking Study released by the Insight Association. Brian and Gabby discuss some of the stats, including some that were somewhat surprising to both of them. You can get your free copy of the Insights Association Data Quality Benchmarking Report here. Next, Brian and Gabby talk about some of the recent headlines from around the market research industry, including ComScore's 2024 results, Glimpse's rebrand to Panoplai, and Disney shutting down FiveThirtyEight. In our final story, they touch on the reports about Kantar potentially looking to sell their Worldpanel/Numerator division. Thanks for listening! If you have headed to Pasadena for SampleCon, be sure to say hello to Kathleen Hock. If you will be in Chicago for Quirk, be sure to connect with Gabby or Abby Synder. This leads to a conversation about the new US panel that Bilendi & Respondi launched following its acquisition of Netquest in December. Both Brian and Matthew liked that Bilendi was investing in a new US panel and suggested that it would experience early success because of Bilendi's reputation. They next discuss Kantar's plans to combine Numerator and Worldpanel into a new company. Brian wonders if the new company plans to add features that appear from one side to the other. They then move into the news about KS&R's new AI tool. They discuss how its components are similar to other tools EMI has tested, which leads Brian to talk about how the test results will be released in the 2025 Sample Landscape report. Matthew and Brian also discuss the tool's quality monitoring portion and how it might work. In the final story of today's episode, Matthew and Brian explore the new IPA Bellwether report's news that market research budgets in the UK rose 3.1% in Q4 of 2024 and are expected to increase in 2025. Welcome back to Intellicast! We are putting the final touches on season seven. We want to thank all of you who tuned in this year; we really appreciate it. In this year's Best Of episode, we are going to revisit a few of our favorite interviews from 2024. [0:54 Seconds] First up is Roddy Knowles, who made his return to the podcast after several years. He, Brian, and Matthew touched on his journey to dtect, as well as taking a deep dive into the larger fraud issue, including a few dirty secrets around data quality. [30:15] Next up, we revisit Karin Pepin's first appearance on the podcast this season, where we had a deep conversation about data quality. Karin explains that there is no single approach to solving data quality, but a multi-layered approach is needed. [1:10:44] Finally, let's look back at our conversation with Jeremy Zogby prior to the 2024 election. Jeremy talks with Brian and Jason about potential adjustments pollsters have made coming into the 2024 election. Jeremy also breaks down what pollsters and the media have learned from the past two election cycles and how it pertains to the 2024 election. This leads to a discussion around the impact the media, along with misinformation, has on polling. This was a great conversation leading into the election. That's a wrap for season 7. Welcome back to Intellicast! In today's episode, Brian and Matthew are joined by two special guests to get all the details around a news story that was talked about several weeks back – the new strategic partnership between Brandtrust and Protobrand. Joining Brian and Matthew to discuss how this partnership came about are Alex Millet, the new CEO of Brandtrust, and Pal Afzelius, the CEO of Protobrand. Since this was Pal's first appearance on the podcast, Brian asked him how he ended up in the market research industry. Pal tells us how he attended the Swedish School, met the co-founder of Protobrand, and hit it off; the rest is history. (You can hear Alex's origin story here: https://playlist.megaphone.fm?e=CSN6936360131) After learning about Pal, the guys turned to the strategic partnership between Brandtrust and Protobrand. Alex starts it by discussing the background of the relationship between the two companies and what led to their discussions and, ultimately, partnering. He and Pal then talk about how the partnership works for each organization, including how they play to each other's strengths. Alex and Pal even get into how the two organizations have become much more client-centric in their approach since the partnership announcement. Alex and Pal then talk about what comes next for the partnership, including better integrating their delivery to clients and improving their combined solutions. Welcome back to Intellicast! Gabby Blados returns to talk Thanksgiving and the latest news from around the market research industry with Brian Peterson. Kicking off the episode, Brian and Gabby talk about their favorite Thanksgiving dishes and traditions. They touch on everything from stuffing and Jello salad to the time each usually sits down for Thanksgiving dinner (or, in Gabby's case – Thanksgiving lunch). After the Thanksgiving talk, Gabby and Brian turned their attention to the latest market research news, starting with the news of a new Board of Directors for Dynata and what it could mean for the future focus of Dynata. This episode had two big topics: data quality and artificial intelligence. On the data quality front, Brian and Gabby discuss the new funding for the Data Quality Co-Op, the new strategic partnership between Sample Ninja and Veriff, and the new standard endorsed by the Insights Association for transferring survey data between platforms. They also discuss some of the data quality comments made on the new Research-Live podcast about how quality issues could become an existential issue for the industry. On the AI side, Gabby and Brian touch on new research from TeamViewer that found three-quarters of decision-makers within the UK believe that AI will lead to a production boom. They also broke down the latest study released by Qualtrics, which found that most research will be conducted using synthetic data in the next three years. This episode will get you caught up with industry news as you head into the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome back to Intellicast! We are back with a great episode. Joining Brian Peterson and Matthew Alexander to talk data quality is the COO of dtect, and friend of the podcast, Roddy Knowles. Kicking off the episode, Brian and Matthew catch up with Roddy on what he has been up to since the last time he was on the podcast, including what led him to move over to dtect, a new data quality platform. After getting the low down on dtect and learning what they are all about, the guys turned the conversation to data quality in the industry. As an industry, we have been talking about data quality for some time now. Roddy gives his thoughts about the industry's strides in tackling data quality issues and what hasn't been done well. Next, the guys turn their attention to the discussion of bots and how it seems to be a significant focus when people talk about data quality. Roddy gives some great insight into how bots make up a small fraction of overall data quality issues and how they are just a subset of the larger fraud issue. After going down a couple of rabbit holes, Brian asks Roddy where he sees data quality in the industry going over the next few years. Roddy doesn't disappoint. He talks about how if we don't properly address data quality issues, it could lead to the end of quantitative research as we currently know it. This is a great conversation you don't want to miss! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian Peterson is joined again by EMI's Gabby Blados to discuss the latest news from around the market research industry. Kicking off the episode, Gabby and Brian discuss the recent rebrand of Directions Research, Aimpoint, and SEEK to the Directions Group. Next, they discuss the new emoji video feedback tool introduced by Jibunu and Forsta's recent announcement of server-to-server connections to tackle ghost completes. The Forsta story leads to a deeper discussion between Brian and Gabby about how this technique has been around for a while. Gabby and Brian switch gears and talk about some of the market research industry veterans who have changed roles, including Patrick Comer taking over as the CEO of Cint, and PureSpectrum adding Toluna vet Phil Ahad as their new Chief Innovation Officer. In the last segment of today's episode, Brian and Gabby tackle some of the latest AI news. First off, they discuss the newly proposed AI Consent Act. The discussion leads into how this proposed legislation will impact the generative AI models like ChatGPT and Claude and how it could potentially impact synthetic data/persona providers and the data used to train them. Second, they talk about Signoi and their new simulated (synthetic) persona solution. Signoi offers two options, and this story merged with the AI Consent Act discussion. Brian wanted to better understand where the data comes from in order to train their models. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian Peterson and Jason Inderhees are joined by the Managing Partner of John Zogby Strategies and frequent Intellicast guest, Jeremy Zogby. Jeremy joins the guys to discuss the polling, the 2024 presidential election, third-party candidacies, and much more! Kicking off the episode, Jeremy talks with Brian and Jason about potential adjustments pollsters have made coming into the 2024 election. Jeremy also breaks down what pollsters and the media have learned from the past two election cycles and how it pertains to the 2024 election. This leads to a discussion around the impact the media, along with misinformation, has on polling. In the next segment, Brian gets Jeremy's perspective on the current election's seeming drama and plot twists and how it compares to previous elections. Jeremy, in his customary manner, brings the historical perspective and details how this election has similarities to the 1968 election, from an assassination (attempt this year), a sitting president dropping out of the race, ongoing international conflicts, and more. This segways into a discussion about the main two parties' volatility and its impact on third-party and independent candidates. The guys switch gears and talk with Jeremy about the positive and negative impact the vice-presidential picks have had this election cycle and how it seems more impactful than in previous elections. In the last segment of the interview, Brian asks about the issues Jeremy sees from recent polls he has been running that will drive people to the polls. They also discuss other races outside the presidential election that Jeremy is watching. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Matthew Alexander joins Brian Peterson again to talk about the latest news-making waves in the market research industry. Kicking off the episode, Matthew and Brian analyze YouGov's acquisition of Yabble. The guys are both surprised by the low price, speculating on undisclosed deal details and reflecting on lower AI valuations until a market leader emerges. Next, they discuss the latest IPA Bellwether report that showed that marketing budgets in the UK grew by 3.2%, more than expected. The guys speculate whether this is real growth or cost inflation. SEMrush's investment into MFour is the next story Matthew and Brian discuss. They wonder what the investment will mean for both organizations. They touch on Rich Silva's promotion to President of Research For Good, PureSpectrum's expansion in the DACH region, and Google's decision not to eliminate third-party cookies from its Chrome browser. In the last story of the week, the guys discuss a recent story from Research Live about an experiment Ipsos ran to see if it could create synthetic profiles that could predict the UK election. They discuss if something similar could be done for the US election. It leads to a broader conversation about how the programming of persona and other AI tools always goes back to the data used to train them and whether it is flawed or not. Thanks for listening! Welcome back to Intellicast! In today's episode, Brian Peterson is joined by Gabby Blados to talk about the latest news from the market research industry. Kicking off the episode, Brian and Gabby discuss the news that NIQ is integrating their panel data into their Discovery platform. Gabby highlights how this powerful combination promises to deliver richer, more actionable insights. In the following story, Brian and Gabby discuss how Ipsos is launching PersonaBots. This leads to a deeper discussion around the use of AI to create these synthetic personas and the impact they will have on research going forward. It is not without a warning as both Brian and Gabby talk about how the LLMs and AIs are only as good as the data that is used to train them. Next, Brian and Gabby jump into some of the highlights from part 1 of the recently released 2024 Insights & Analytics Market Report. They talk about the industry's growth and how the growth rate has declined. Gabby gives her perspective from a salesperson and how she experienced it firsthand over the last year. They then touch on Dynata emerging from Chapter 11. They comment on the speed at which they could accomplish this, especially since their filing was only talked about a couple of episodes ago. In the final story of the episode, Gabby and Brian talk about OpenBrand's acquisition of TraQline and speculate on what could be next for them. It leads to a more philosophical discussion around whether AI is the next major industry shift, like moving to online from phone was, or if it is more of a blockchain-like trend. Welcome back to Intellicast! In today's episode, Brian Peterson is joined by EMI's Mary Draper and Karine Pepin, co-founder of The Research Heads, to give another talk about data quality. The focus of the conversation came from a recent LinkedIn post from Karine that started a lengthy debate in the comment section – specifically questioning the Quality Pledge that some organizations have signed. The questions included: Why is a corporation leading this effort rather than GDQ, CASE4Quality, or industry associations? How are "indicators" of quality defined? Are indicators measured pre or post-survey? Will suppliers be audited to ensure compliance? What does "sharing bad practices" entail, and with whom are they shared? I counted 27 signatories. With so many open questions, what exactly are they committing to? Brian starts the episode by getting Mary and Karine's perspectives on the pledge. Karine talks about her reaction when she found out about it, especially since she is part of the Global Data Quality Initiative through the Insights Association. Mary then points out that if an initiative like this is going on, it should be endorsed by some of the industry organizations working on data quality and be centrally located. The three then discuss what needs to happen to make this pledge more enforceable and meaningful. Karine mentioned agreed-upon standards and an enforcer of those standards. She mentions that some in the industry are calling on brands to enforce this, but Karine wonders what role agencies should play. Mary noted that she would like to see an "elected" official in the third-party entity to manage this. This leads Brian to ask if a Better Business Bureau-like model would work. The conversation turns to having a more central way to report issues that occur, specifically how to report bad actor respondents and have them removed across the panel landscape rather than just having them removed from a single panel. In the last part of the conversation, Brian switches gears, and he and Mary talk with Karine about the official launch of her new venture, The Research Heads, and how the response has been. Welcome back to Intellicast! In this episode, we continue our spring conference recap series. This time, Brian Peterson is joined by Tony Brown and Jason Inderhees, who were in Austin for IIeX. The guys dive right in, with Jason and Tony giving overall perceptions of the conference. They talked about the set-up (including the headphones), how it seemed people were willing to talk, and the quality of the sessions. This leads to a conversation about the key themes of the conference. In what shouldn't surprise anyone, artificial intelligence was the key theme. However, Jason and Tony both talk about how, while AI was the main theme, they liked the secondary theme of data quality and the efforts made (including employing AI) to achieve better quality. Next, Tony and Jason talk about their favorite sessions from the IIeX. Tony talks about a session that BET held about how they use data to improve their recommendations for viewers based on their viewing habits. He also mentions another presentation that talked about fandom, how brand love is tracked, and the emotional ties they have to their consumers. Jason mentions a presentation from Cint on how they are employing AI and a presentation involving the NBA and how they are utilizing data and insights to help plot out their future. Jason also mentions a session where Kraft Heinz talked about brand measurement and the methodologies they combine to understand better how people interact with their brand. To wrap up the episode, the guys have a fun discussion about the best meal they had while they were in Austin. Jason raves about the steakhouse he took some clients to for dinner, while Tony gets a recommendation from his Uber driver, which turns out to be fantastic. If you missed out on IIeX, this is the episode for you! Thanks for tuning in! We have just released the 2024 edition of our annual report on the online sample industry, The Sample Landscape. Welcome back to Intellicast! We have another great episode for you today. Brian Peterson is joined by Mary Draper, who has just returned from Atlanta and the Insights Association Annual Conference. Kicking off the episode, Mary and Brian discuss how the spring conference season is closing out. This naturally sets up the conversation for the rest of the episode – an in-depth recap of the IA Annual Conference. The conversation starts with Mary giving Brian her overall perceptions of the conference. Compared to other conferences she has been to, Mary talks about how IA Annual is much more focused on information sharing and networking than sales. This leads to Mary discussing one of the first sessions called "So You Want to Sell to Me" and how Karen Craft talked about what it was like for her to attend a conference. This included the hundreds of emails they get, many invites for coffee and/or dinners, and more. Mary said that while she couldn't remember the exact number mentioned, if Karen accepted all the invites she got, she would be booked solid for a week and miss the entire conference. It was eye-opening. Next, Brian and Mary discuss some of the core themes and topics from the conference. In addition to artificial intelligence (one of the main topics at conferences for nearly two years), data quality and inclusive research were also big topics. Mary gives more details about how AI was discussed at the conference. She noted that while there was initial skepticism and concerns about the validity of AI-generated data, AI's efficiency and time-saving aspects have led to its increased use and acceptance in the industry. She also talked about how it was talked about some of the drawbacks of self-reported data, which leads to a larger conversation around the difference between self-reported versus behaviorally verified data and what sometimes causes inconsistencies with self-reported data. Mary also talks about how the conference focused on the importance of making market research more accessible, with a focus on people with disabilities. She shares her experience participating in breakout workshops; particularly one focused on developing a participant Bill of Rights. Finally, Mary and Brian talk about Mary's favorite non-conference activity she did. While she couldn't make her normal Publix trip, she spoke about how she could watch the eclipse while in Atlanta. It was on her calendar for a while, so she was happy she didn't miss it. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome back to Intellicast! It has been a couple of weeks, but we are back with a couple of special guests. Joining Brian Peterson this week are Gabby Blados and Matthew Alexander – both of whom attended Quirks Chicago. Kicking off the episode, the trio discuss the recent eclipse and what they did to view it. Everyone agreed that it was a once-in-a-lifetime event that they were glad they were able to see. Next, Gabby and Matthew give a breakdown of Quirks Chicago. They talked about the overall tone of the event and how it was more lively than other conferences they had attended, especially ones just out of the COVID lockdown. Gabby mentioned how she felt a sense of camaraderie from everyone attending. Matthew and Gabby then get into some of the major themes and topics from the conference. In what should surprise no one, AI was the biggest topic. They noticed a shift in attendees toward embracing AI, where there was much more hesitancy in previous years. Data quality was another big topic at Quirks, and sometimes, they overlapped with AI. Gabby and Matthew talked about their favorite session, which got them both thinking about how we, as an industry, ask about household income and, with cultural changes, whether there needs to be a change. They mentioned how there could be challenges in defining household income, especially among multigenerational households, households where adult children have moved back in, or ones that have extended family living with them. This leads to a deeper conversation about how current screening questions about household income could lead to the exclusion of certain respondents because of how they interpret the definition of household income. Gabby and Matthew then talked about their experience at a session where Johnsonville and C+R Research presented how they navigated building a new campaign to bring everyone together while avoiding pitfalls that other brands have encountered recently. Matthew pointed out that he was impressed by Johnsonville's willingness to acknowledge their initial missteps and their commitment to improve through collaboration. The conversation had Brian thinking about a movie he recently watched, Flaming Hot, that had parallels about ensuring you address cultural differences appropriately. Finally, Matthew and Gabby tell Brian that it was announced that next year's conference was moving out of downtown Chicago to a venue closer to O'Hare airport. Matthew and Gabby talk about how, while they enjoyed the downtown location, they were excited about the potential of the new venue. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a special episode for you today! Brian Peterson is joined by Mary Draper and special guest Karine Pepin, co-founder of The Research Heads, for an in-depth conversation on data quality. Before diving into the discussion, Karine talks about her background, how she got into market research, and what led her to start The Research Heads. She talks about the market gap that she and her co-founder identified where they are looking to bridge the gap between do-it-yourself researchers, in-house teams, and full-service agencies by offering flexible and collaborative solutions. Next, we jump into our data quality discussion. Karine and Mary discuss why there is no single solution to ensure data integrity. Karine advocates for a multi-layered approach to address various sources of bad data, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive screening process, attention checks, and post-survey analysis, which Mary agrees with. The discussion expands into the impact of social media and the role of incentives in survey participation, acknowledging the challenges posed by fraudulent respondents and the potential benefits of a universal respondent ID system to enhance targeting and data quality. Finally, Karine gives us her view on the future of data quality in market research. While optimistic, she does believe the industry needs to be committed to transparency and the education of clients about the necessity for increased budgets to tackle data integrity issues effectively. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Gabby Blados and Brian Peterson are joined by special guest Brianna Boyer, the Senior Director of Solution Strategy from AYTM, to discuss agile research. Before jumping into the agile research discussion, Brianna talks about how she got into market research. Like many of us in the market research industry, Brianna talks about how she kind of fell into the industry. Brian and Brianna talk about what could happen to the industry if an effort was put into having people pursue careers in market research rather than just fall into it. Next, Brian, Gabby, and Brianna dig into what agile research exactly is. Brianna explained that agile research involves applying the agile mindset to research, emphasizing rapid progress and change, unlike traditional methods. She noted that agile research often involves shorter, more DIY studies but stressed that these characteristics are not its core but rather a byproduct of the larger values and principles behind agile. Next, Brianna discusses the benefits of the agile methodology in product development, emphasizing its focus on incremental steps and iterative processes. She highlights the importance of not being too invested in one question or aspect but rather focusing on the current answer that can help progress. Brian asked if shorter surveys were a part of this process, to which Brianna agreed, suggesting that while there's room to reduce the length of surveys, it's important not to eliminate all depth in favor of brevity. She proposed thinking in terms of ‘must haves,' ‘should haves,' and ‘could haves' and focusing on the first two to keep the length of surveys manageable. They then turn to the challenges of agile research. Brianna mentions that the biggest challenge is implementing agile research, highlighting the need for a mindset shift and change management. She emphasizes the importance of buy-in from stakeholders and teams, to the reality that change takes time. This leads to Brianna talking about realistic timelines for implementation. Gabby and Brianna then discuss the potential of using agile research methods within traditional market research frameworks to identify insights quickly. Brianna explains that while agile research may not be suitable for every project or need, it can be beneficial between larger research projects. Brianna also suggested that agile research can be particularly effective during innovation cycles and for new initiatives. In the last segment of the interview, Brian, Brianna, and Gabby discuss AI's impact on the future of agile research. Brianna highlights the potential of AI in data analysis, designing questionnaires, and building visualizations while also voicing some concern about the potential loss of human interaction and richness of insights. If you ever wanted to know about agile research, this is the episode for you. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian Peterson is joined by Jason Inderhees to talk about the latest market research and AI news! Kicking off the episode, Jason and Brian discuss the latest Bellwether report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), which found that market research budgets declined in Q4 2024. It also mentioned that the industry is expected to decrease by 1% over the next few years. Jason talks about how, while the overall industry may decline, pockets still experience growth, and you just need to uncover them. Next, the guys talk about the new appointment to the Toluna board. They ponder if this accelerates Toluna's move to target brands and offers them a full suite of solutions. The guys then switch gears a bit and talk about a $33 million investment in Anomalo, a California-based data quality platform. They talk about how the platform works and if there are any potential applications for the market research industry. The second half of the episode starts off with the debut of the new intro music for the AI News segment. Jason and Brian then dig into some recent AI news stories, including news that Publicis Group plans to invest 300 million Euros in AI over the next three years. The next few AI stories aren't market research-specific but could impact the industry and industries we serve. First, the guys talk about the recently issued executive order around AI that aims to ensure that the US leads the way and manages the risk of artificial intelligence. Brian and Jason postulate that this is probably just the start of AI legislation. In the last story, they guys dive deep into news that New York had proposed a new law called the New York Robot Act that would impose a tax surcharge on “using technology to displace workers,” in an amount equal to taxes and fees that would have been paid on what an employee would have earned in the eliminated position. Jason and Brian are a bit on opposite sides of the debate on this one, but come out at the end seeing each other's point of view. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, we are joined by Dan Braker of Breakthrough Research. Just a note, we recorded this interview in December. Kicking off the episode, we learn a bit about Dan's background and what led him to get into market research and start his own company Breakthrough Research. This leads to a discussion around design, and its importance, especially in marketing materials and market research reports. Next, we talked with Dan about Breakthrough Research's new Brand Authenticity Approach. It was built to measure the authenticity of brands, as well as spokespeople and others who may be associated with it. Measuring the authenticity of a brand means measuring if a brand is meeting its standards and values in the eyes of consumers. It tries to show if a brand is being honest, transparent, and acting on what they say they stand for. Dan next talks about the results from the pilot program testing brand authenticity they ran earlier in 2023. Dan talks about how they found 3 of the top 4 most authentic brands were kid's brands. He also discusses how in the top 20, there were several competitors that both ranked. You can read the results by downloading the report here. In the last part of the interview, we switch gears a bit and have some fun with Dan, and learn how he became a basketball fanatic. Welcome back to Intellicast! It's hard to believe we are in the final month of 2023. Brian Lamar and Producer Brian have lined up a quick news episode to help you ease into December. Starting the episode, the guys talk about the Q3 earnings reports from Ipsos and ComScore. The two are like two sides of a coin regarding the financial results they reported. Next, the guys discuss some of the executive changes at Toluna in the wake of its acquisition of MetrixLab earlier this year. The changes included MetrixLab's former global HR director, Hans Verhulst, being named Chief People Officer and Jolique Weelink being named the Chief Insights Officer. Brian and Brian then discussed GMO's new API connection method, Organic Sampling. Producer Brian asks if this is just River Sampling 2.0, which Brian Lamar thinks could be. Although he feels it improves connecting studies to the right respondents, it doesn't matter. In the last story of today's episode, Brian and Brian discuss the rebranding of Kantar Public to Verian. Welcome back to Intellicast! Today's episode is a bit different than normal. Brian Lamar and Producer Brian kick off the episode by jumping into some market research news, but all stories are tied to the theme of today's epsiode: AI. First up, the guys discuss the news of SurveyMonkey's new AI tool called Build with AI. They talk about how this can help non-researchers write better questionnaires, along with some speculating about what they hope to see in the tool in the near future. It leads to Brian Lamar touching on a recent WIRe event in Cincinnati where AI was discussed. Next, the guys touch on Voxpopme's new AI tool called Live Interviews. It leads to a conversation about how quickly qualitative firms have embraced technology since COVID. In the final news story, Brian and Brian discuss the recent findings from a Qualtrics study on market researchers' impressions and feelings of AI in market research. There were some surprising results, but the guys found it helpful that while people were optimistic, they did recognize the potential hazards. In the next segment, they guys dig into how AI is being used throughout the industry, along with a variety of examples. They also talk about how EMI is using it internally, for both market research and just to increase efficiency. They guys talk about how they are personally using it along with some of the experiments they have been doing. Brian talks about how while he was testing image creation, he found a glitch where AI was misspelling words in the images, even after being told not to misspell it and being given the correct spelling. Brian Lamar also gives an example of one of the other applications that his team is using AI for. Thanks for listening! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian dig into some of the recent news from around the market research industry. The episode kicks off with some commentary about how fall has really set in over the last week or so. Then Brian Lamar starts to provide some updates on upcoming conference dates. He talks about not only the ones left on the schedule for 2023 but many that have been announced for 2024 as well. Brian then gets into the upcoming Cincinnati WIRe event where EMI's own Mary Draper will be speaking on a panel with Mike Herrel and Rudy Bublitz about artificial intelligence, diversity, and more at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. After the conference discussion, the guys jump into some market research news. First up is the news of the new Delete Act in California that strengthens CCPA regulations. The guys wonder how this will impact companies and people who are based outside California but work with businesses/people who are. In the next story is a big one for those of us in the sample industry. Research Defender was acquired by Rep Data. Brian and Brian discuss the acquisition, and how it will enhance the competitive landscape around data quality. We also want to send our congratulations again to friends of the podcast Vignesh and the entire Research Defender team. In the next story, the guys discuss another data quality-related story, this time the new initiative, Colab, from Verve and Basis research. It takes a different approach to data quality that the guys hadn't seen before. Brian is encouraged and hopes it is successful. Producer Brian plays devil's advocate and asks how they could account for someone using the new voice chat function of ChatGPT to game their validation methods. The guys switched back to data privacy news with a story about the new federal legislation being proposed called You Own the Data Act. The proposed legislation would prohibit a lot of data collection, use, and storage by a number of insights companies and organizations, as well as requiring several common consumer data privacy rights. The guys talk about Howard's response to the legislation, as well as give their own perspective on it. In the last couple of news stories, the guys touch on the winners of the MRX Podcast of the Year award, as well as the winners of the Female Founders Award. In the last segment of the podcast, they guys discuss a recent Greenbook article titled, Why the Sampling Ecosystem Sets Up Honest Participants for Failure, from Karine Pepin of 2CV. The article talks about how EPC is a cause of fraud in the industry, and for honest participants to fail when taking surveys. Welcome back to Intellicast! We have another great guest joining us on today's episode. Craig Alter, who works in consumer insights at Perfetti Van Melle, joins Brian Lamar and Producer Brian to talk about how research has evolved from a brand perspective this year. Before diving into the discussion, Craig brings us up to speed on what has happened with him since his last appearance on the podcast back in 2022. He explains how he joined Perfetti Van Melle and the reasons behind his career move. Next, Craig shares his perspective on how research has adapted this year, considering the volatile economy and tightening budgets. He mentions that the impact on Perfetti Van Melle has been minimal, and we even speculate that candy might be recession-proof. Craig also highlights Perfetti Van Melle's growth mode, citing their recent acquisitions of new brands from Mondelez earlier that week. The conversation then evolves into a discussion about how Craig and his team gather and utilize global insights, applying them to regional brands. They also explore the overlap between regional brands and tastes in different areas. In the final segment of the interview, Craig discusses how he and the team at Perfetti Van Melle are incorporating artificial intelligence into their research process. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, we are joined by Jeremy Zogby, the managing partner of John Zogby Strategies to talk about the current state of America, polling, and we even get a sneak peek into some results from their own proprietary research. Hang in there too, it is a long one, but an awesome one. Kicking off the episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian get Jeremy's take on the current state of America and what historical analogies may exist for our current times. Jeremy talks about how 10 to 15 years ago we saw the simultaneous rise of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street; two movements that could be considered on the far ends of each political spectrum. One led to the rise of Bernie Sanders and the other MAGA and Trump. He discussed how we almost saw a face-off between the two populus factions of the parties. In the end, he shows how populism is here to stay. We pivot a bit in the next segment and talk to Jeremy about what he is seeing right now in polling in terms of the presidential nomination on both sides. Jeremy starts out by letting everyone know that polling is not predicting anything at this point. The predictions really come in the last week of a presidential campaign after there have been months of monitoring the landscape and data collection; that is when they will make a prediction. Right now, it is way too early to predict anything. Instead of giving any predictions, Jeremy talks about how right now it is much more establishment versus anti-establishment on both sides, with anti-establishment leading in many cases. Jeremy then gives us some insights into the types of polling work he is doing right now. It includes the standard race studies, as well as work for some candidates, and some public opinion studies on some issues he feels will be factors in the 2024 election. Jeremy then gets into the different tiers of issues. Tier one is the economy/inflation, and tier 2 issues right now are guns, crime, and the southern border. This leads to Jeremy talking about the intensity factor of issues and how it can impact voting. In the next segment, Jeremy gives the guys a preview into what the next 6 months look like at John Zogby Strategies in terms of polling and other projects. Jeremy talks about how they will be tracking the entire national election as they work for the Kennedy campaign. The last discussion leads Jeremy to talk about some proprietary research findings he has collected, that at the time of the recording, had not been released yet. We talk about everything from trust in media, AI in news, and people's view of local institutions. The key takeaway Jeremy found was that there is a high level of distrust right now with the media. In the final segment, Jeremy tries to reinstall the guy's faith with some additional findings that show people trust local government institutions, like school boards. He also leaves the guys with some inspiration about our generation fixing the problems for our kids' generation. Thanks for tuning in! Thanks for tuning in to another episode of Intellicast! We've entered the August lull, so this is a quick, news-filled episode. Brian and Brian waste no time jumping into the first news story: Bain & Company has acquired Max Kelsen's consulting and managed services divisions in Australia. The second story tried to slide under the radar, but ultimately had quite the buzz. Zoom has updated their terms of service to allow Zoom to train its AI on customer content including meetings, chats, etc.... with no opt-out option. Since it's release on Friday, both Zoom's COO and CEO have made comments on the update. From these statements it seems as though they may be working on an option for consent. The guys also discuss the endless violations an AI training without clarifying consent could have. The next news story is an exciting one! MRII and Know Research have launched a new program that will award $5k grants to women-owned businesses in the US who have been operating for 5 years or less. Additionally, The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) has launched a study to examine and understand the value of panels for TV and cross-platform measurement in the US. This leads to a discussion of the guys' experiences with diaries, consuming different media, and how to measure it. In the last story, the guys discuss Burke's appointment of Tara Marotti as President and John Thomas as Chief Client Office. To tie it back to one of our previous stories, Burke started as a women-owned business with Alberta Burke! Thanks for listening! Welcome back to another episode of Intellicast! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are talking about market research news in today's episode! First and foremost, you can no longer reach us on Twitter. You'll have to find us on “X” @Intellicast1. It's only fitting that the episode would open with a discussion of Elon Musk's latest update of the social platform. In the words of Producer Brian, “this just shows you can be a genius, but you're not a genius at everything.” Elon Musk, if you're in need of some market research, you know where to find us. In our first actual market research-oriented segment, the guys cover the upcoming conferences in the industry. At this point, it's a permanent segment. Brian Lamar shares some updates on the Insights Association North Central Chapter conference in September and announces a fun (unofficial) award as well as a Halloween happy hour. Next up, Brian and Brian discuss our Cincinnati neighbor, MarketVision, and their new hires. They also discuss SampleNinja's partnership with Virtual Incentives and plans to integrate them into their platform. In a bit of a shocking announcement, we dive into Qualtric's plans to spend $500M over the next four years on artificial intelligence. The guys also chat about how this might transform the industry. Our final two news stories include Fuel Cycle's launch of a new platform called Research Engine (Brian Lamar gives this new name “Ten Lammies” … whatever that means) and a discussion of Panelbase's acquisition by Norstat, which will strengthen Norstat's presence in western Europe. We wrap up with a quick Women's World Cup chat! Thanks for listening! EMI's annual report on the sample industry, The Sample Landscape: 2023 Edition, is now available! The episode kicks off with Deb, Holly, and Mary each giving their individual backgrounds and discussing how their careers led them to market research. Their passion for data quality can't be ignored in each of their introductions. As Brian Lamar says in the episode, if people were awarded doctorates for data quality initiatives, there'd be a lot of them in this podcast! In the next segment of the interview, Deb, Holly, and Mary give dimension to the problem of fraud in market research. They talk about how no studies are immune to fraud and how fraud goes beyond just bots. In fact, they discuss 5 categories of cheaters and how fraud is always evolving. Deb and Holly also share highlights from a paper they wrote titled, “Defeating Endemic Cheating.” This interview also includes a great discussion of best practices and industry initiatives to increase data quality including the Insights Association's DII, which Brian, Deb, Holly, and Mary are each a part of. Thanks for tuning in to Intellicast! In this episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian discuss conferences and some news stories from the past few weeks (yes, we know it's been a while since our last episode!) So, without further ado, let's jump right in. The episode kicks off with some feedback we received on our last episode! In it, we had a conversation on the conference in Hilton Head, which was a unique location, but it was expensive, hard to get to, etc. Our listener recommended that maybe we need to go to some second-tier cities (Ex: Charlotte, New Orleans, Nashville, Philadelphia, Cincinnati) for our conferences. The reasoning being that these cities are cheaper, and the airports have less travel hassle/cancellations and are easier to navigate. What do you think? The guys also give an update on the upcoming conferences in the next few months and even some in 2024! In our first news story, the guys discuss Momentive's announcement that they will be returning to its original name, SurveyMonkey. As expected, Brian Lamar is practically giddy over this news. In the next news story, Brian and Brian chat about Cint and Publisher's Clearing House's partnership to increase access to respondents with their new platform, PCH Consumer Insights. This leads Brian Lamar to a bit of a soapbox rant about how things like this change panels. The next news story follows a similar thread with Kantar selling its specialist healthcare business to M3 Global Research. After this, the discussion turns to artificial intelligence. The European Union has approved a draft version of the EU's AI Act which sets out plans to regulate the use of AI technology. The plans will enact bans on many uses of AI and require AI systems to comply with transparency requirements. In the last story, the guys discuss QuetionPro's acquisition of PathosAI, an AI platform that identifies states and non-stated emotions, which leads to another fired-up rant from Brian Lamar about name changes. Thanks for tuning in to another episode of Intellicast! This week Brian Lamar and Producer Brian have a short and sweet episode with everything you need to know to stay up to date on the market research industry. Let's dive right into it! Kicking off the episode, the guys discuss some upcoming events: The Insights Association Chapter Event, Quirks New York, Insights Marketing Day, and more! They also go on a quick tangent of best places to have conferences and events. Let us know what you think! In the first news story, Brian and Brian discuss Forsta and Cint's partnership. This is a step in the right direction to solve the data quality issues our industry is facing and reduce fraud. Next up, we touch on the Insights Association's DII Council and their new website. The site allows people to access the DII Toolkit and the Data Integrity Pledge. A lot of cool stuff is coming from this group, so you'll want to follow this page. The final news story is SamplNinja's introduction of a new mobile app that will improve respondent experience and address survey fraud. This asks the question, is the market research space behind on using apps? And that's it for the news this week! We're not sure if it's a summer lull or the calm before the storm but we thank you for tuning in to the episode! Check out the IA DII Website here. Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a special interview today with Lindsey Bartel of Brandtrust and Andrew DeCilles of EMI! This is Lindsey's third time on the podcast and we're so happy to have her on again to discuss some of the research we've partnered on surrounding mental health—a great segue into Mental Health Awareness Month! The interview kicks off with some background into Brandtrust's relationship with EMI and how these projects got started. It all began with Brandtrust's work with Narrative Inquiry and a subject we were all passionate about: mental health. As talking about mental health became less stigmatized, we recognized a need for people to talk about it. This interview gives a behind-the-scenes look at the research and methodology. In the second segment, we discuss some of the key takeaways from the research including reading a real open-end response from the study. This portion of the interview boils down what Brandtrust and EMI have spent hours discussing and analyzing over the past few months. We are going to be diving into this more in the upcoming webinar, Uncovering the Truth: The Power of Narrative Inquiry and Strategic Sample Blending in Mental Health, on May 18th at 12:00 PM EST. You can register here! For the final segment of the episode, Brian, Lindsey, and Andrew share some highlights from the process. They discuss experiences with quality and the incredible responses they saw throughout the project. They also share some of the places these findings will be available in the future if you haven't heard them yet! Thanks for listening! Welcome back to Intellicast! In today's episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are joined by Cindy Neumann of the Insights Association and EMI's own Mary Draper. This is a great episode to discuss some of the great things going on in our industry, especially the initiatives being led by the Insights Association. The interview kicks off with a quick chat about Cindy's background and what led her to market research. Like many researchers, Cindy kind of fell into the market research industry and has spent the majority of her career on the syndicated data side of things. About a year ago, Cindy had the opportunity to join the Insights Association, where she works now. In the next segment of the interview, Cindy takes some time to discuss the Insights Association DII Council (Data Integrity Initiative Council), a committee dedicated to improving data quality. She shares how and why the DII was created, who is on the council, and some of their current efforts. This segues into a conversation surrounding the Data Integrity Toolkit, a resource created by the DII for anyone who is interested in learning more about data quality. Cindy shares some of the areas that the toolkit focuses on, and Mary discusses how she uses the toolkit in her role at EMI. We also get an idea of what will be coming with the next release, what the DII is currently working on, and some of their most important initiatives including a partnership with MRS, ESOMAR, and SampleCon. If you have a passion for data quality or have been looking for a way to get more involved in the market research industry, this episode is for you! Thanks for listening!
