Dopo aver pregato per i suoi discepoli, Gesù prega ora per tutte le generazioni dei credenti. I discepoli - come spesso ricorda il Papa - non devono isolarsi nella loro fede come in una torre d’avorio: sono la cellula che si svilupperà in una comunità sempre più vasta di credenti, mediante la fede attinta al Vangelo, predicato dai primi discepoli d’ora in poi, sotto la guida dello Spirito Santo. È attraverso la loro predicazione che i credenti di ogni tempo, anche quelli di oggi, vengono misteriosamente a contatto con il Verbo, che si è fatto carne per la salvezza di tutti, e formano con lui e con il Padre un’unità perfetta. Questa unità tra i discepoli non è solo una forte aggregazione basata su affinità cultuali e culturali, ma deve avere una precisa connotazione teologale: deve essere un’unità come quella che esiste fra il Padre e il Figlio, una comunione di tutti con il Padre e il Figlio. Tale unità, realizzata nei discepoli, è condizione “perché il mondo creda che il Padre ha inviato Gesù” come suo Figlio e salvatore degli uomini. “Io in loro e tu in me, affinché siano perfetti nell’unità, e il mondo conosca che tu mi hai mandato, e li hai amati come hai amato me.” Questa comunione è possibile solo nell’amore: solo con l’amore una persona può essere nell’altra. L’incarnazione di Dio in Cristo e nei credenti deve essere un motivo di credibilità per il mondo; il mondo crederà in Dio solo quando lo vedrà in coloro che lo attestano. Si tratta comunque di una comunione di vita da cercare e da realizzare progressivamente fino al compimento. Gesù ha pregato per l’unità dei discepoli ai quali ha trasmesso le parole udite dal Padre, ai quali invia lo Spirito Santo per guidarli alla verità tutta intera, e che sono conservati in questa fede dall’amore del Padre e dalla preghiera del Figlio. Non troviamo in ciò una risposta immediata ai nostri attuali problemi ecumenici, ma siamo collocati nel clima nel quale sperare e operare per l’unità intesa da Gesù.
