In this exclusive interview, I chat with Peter Hlynsky, CEO of MEC (Mountain Equipment Company), one of Canada's most iconic outdoor retailers. Peter shares his remarkable journey from CFO to CEO over five years at MEC, detailing his passion for the outdoors that initially drew him to the company rather than retail specifically.MEC's origin story is captivating - it began in the early 1970s, when University of British Columbia students drove to REI in Washington, bought climbing gear, and sold it from their van on campus. This evolved into Canada's premier outdoor retail cooperative with 21 stores by 2020, becoming what Peter describes as "a candy store for the outdoors."The company's unique employee culture sets MEC apart in the competitive outdoor retail landscape. Staff members genuinely live the lifestyle they sell through "Rad Days" - paid outdoor adventures where employees test gear and bring back real-world experiences. This authentic product knowledge enables staff to provide honest recommendations, sometimes even steering customers away from products that don't fit their specific needs.Peter discusses MEC's significant transformation from a member-owned cooperative to a private company, maintaining the "member" terminology and benefits that resonate with Canadian consumers. The recently relaunched membership program includes purchase-based discounts, exclusive access to popular store events, and MEC's legendary "rock solid guarantee" - one of the industry's most comprehensive return policies.A significant development is MEC's return to Canadian ownership after being acquired by private equity in 2020. Peter and Chief Merchandising Officer Chris Beyer joined the new Canadian ownership group, led by Tim Gu, bringing manufacturing expertise that is particularly valuable for MEC's private label products, which comprise one-third of their business alongside branded products from Patagonia, Arc'teryx, and Yeti. The merchandising strategy balances premium branded products with MEC's highly-regarded private label offerings, providing similar quality at lower prices without wholesale markups. This combination creates a compelling value proposition that competitors struggle to match.Looking ahead, Peter sees significant growth opportunities as competitors exit the market following the COVID-19 pandemic. Atmosphere closed standalone stores, and regional players shuttered operations, creating organic growth potential. MEC plans opportunistic store expansion in underserved Canadian markets, capitalizing on available real estate from retailer closures.Peter's retail advice emphasizes focusing relentlessly on core competencies rather than chasing trending business models. For MEC, this means maintaining its specialty outdoor retailer identity through exceptional in-store service, curated product assortments, and a consistent customer experience across all channels. The episode highlights how authentic brand positioning, employee engagement, and customer-centric policies can sustain competitive advantages in challenging retail environments. MEC's successful transition from a cooperative to a company while preserving its brand values demonstrates effective change management in retail transformation. Ghost Lifestyle founder and CEO Dan Lourenço is back for his six appearance on the PricePlow Podcast, and this one's quite the catch-up, with discussion of all things big and small. This episode focuses mainly on the Ghost Legend V4 launch, which brings a massive formula (look at the size of the tub in the picture) yet at a lower price. We get into the economics and data (or lack thereof) for this decision, then catch up on other launches such as Ghost Energy (new flavor teased at the end), Clear Whey Isolate, Ghost Protein Cereal, minor changes to Legend ALL OUT, the Protein RTD, and the delayed-but-forthcoming Ghost Sleep supplement. Looking to the Future: The Ghost 100 Year Plan But a bigger-picture part of this discussion that cannot be missed is Dan's discussion of the Ghost 100 Year Plan, where he's focusing on building a legacy company the likes of Nike or Oreo that will outlast all of us. To do so, he's building a “team of lifers”, who he refers to as teammates, not employees. This was a great episode with some fun banter, supplement history and economics, rapid-fire product release discussion, and the big shop talk discussed above. Get in, and get ready for the huge Legend V4 tubs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ili8e5sdAuw Show notes at https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/dan-lourenco-ghost-lifestyle-143 Legend V4 Launch Special: Show Notes with Dan Lourenço (0:00) – Introductions (12:00) – 30 Serving Tubs to Remain! Beyonce is coming out with a new Haircare Line! And it's got people talking. It seems a lot of people, fans and non-fans are confused about this. The general consensus is she is not known for haircare. But it opens up a deeper conversation. Will consumers buy for name recognition or is your personal story behind the brand what attracts them? Well we're all not Beyonce so we don't have a built in audience that will buy whatever. We as businesswomen have to be strategic. It has to make sense to the buying public. People are more focused on authenticity and alignment these days when making purchasing decisions. So let's talk about it.
Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, we are joined by Dan Braker of Breakthrough Research. Just a note, we recorded this interview in December. Kicking off the episode, we learn a bit about Dan's background and what led him to get into market research and start his own company Breakthrough Research. This leads to a discussion around design, and its importance, especially in marketing materials and market research reports. Next, we talked with Dan about Breakthrough Research's new Brand Authenticity Approach. It was built to measure the authenticity of brands, as well as spokespeople and others who may be associated with it. Measuring the authenticity of a brand means measuring if a brand is meeting its standards and values in the eyes of consumers. It tries to show if a brand is being honest, transparent, and acting on what they say they stand for. Dan next talks about the results from the pilot program testing brand authenticity they ran earlier in 2023. Dan talks about how they found 3 of the top 4 most authentic brands were kid's brands. He also discusses how in the top 20, there were several competitors that both ranked. You can read the results by downloading the report here. In the last part of the interview, we switch gears a bit and have some fun with Dan, and learn how he became a basketball fanatic. You can learn more about Breakthrough Research by visiting their website: https://bthrough.com/ You can connect with Dan on LinkedIn here. Thanks for listening! Authenticity has been a core principle of the craft beer community since its inception. It's even in the name: “craft” beer. Machines make things. Humans craft things. The vast majority of craft breweries are modestly-sized labors of love built by real people with literal blood, sweat, and tears. Join Brian Winkeler and Jennings Hammack from Oklahoma City-based branding & packaging design shop Robot House as they discuss with CBP's Andrew Coplon all the ways in which authenticity matters in every aspect of a craft brewery's brand experience (from branding & packaging to taproom & shelf presence) and the impact of A.I. on the beer business, both positive (sales & distribution intelligence) and negative (crappy A.I.-generated beer label “art”). Brian Winkeler & Jennings Hammack represent 1/3 of Robot House, an Oklahoma City-based six-person team of creative thinkers, dreamers and doers who craft emotional brand stories with fresh, cool, award-winning design in collaboration with clients around the country.
