Seattle Kraken hockey is back! Jeff and Joey pound coffee and break down what went right and what went wrong with last night's game against the Colorado Avalanche. How Grubauer needs help from the team in order to stay hot, the fans singing along to Blink 182, McCann firing a laser from the boards, and what the hell is the difference between a deflection and a kicked puck are all discussed. The boys' go on to discuss Mardi Gras and explain why they've been eating so much King Cake, how they should plan a trip to Dallas to catch the Kraken face off against the Stars, and exactly what Mardi Gras Krewes are composed of and how it all ties into Mardi Gras Day. The boys also break down the comping road swing against the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues followed by the upcoming home games at Climate Pledge Arena versus the LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks. Jeff segways into trade rumors and the possibility of dealing Mark Giordano and Chris Driedger is discussed before they go into #NoDumbQuestions which covers the +/- statistic in the NHL and exactly how relevant it is in the game which gives Joey an excuse to bring up Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners after somehow thinking he saw a stat that showed Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues having a +/- of +150 on the season. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has him breaking down just how many international players we see in the NHL today, how that is drastically different from what the landscape looked like as early as two decades ago, and the story of Alexander Mogilny - a Russian hockey player who defected to the United States and risked his life to play in the NHL and why the "Miracle on Ice" in the 1980 Winter Olympics when the United States defeated the Soviet Union was such a big deal for the sport. I probably look better now than I did when I was playing rugby, I feel lighter, I'm lighter on my feet. I look completely different and I see pictures of me and I'm probably healthier now then when I was then. 41:44 What tips would he have for anyone doing Ironman Wales. Rooster Radio - Stories & Insights from Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Business, Health, Tech & More
Sydney Roosters legend Anthony Minichiello saw the end of his playing career coming, and planned accordingly. Many of his footy mates didn't, with tragic results. Anthony says the come down from the highs of a sports star life can be hard. Many athletes struggle to find a new purpose, and structure, for their new life. It was different for 'Mini' who was raised by hard working Italian parents who made him get a trade in the early years of his NRL career. He maintained a life of balance, which extended beyond his world of sport. Anthony went on to captain the Roosters and holds the record for most games and most tries at the club. He's decorated as they come - a NSW State of Origin representative, Australia and Italy representative, and winner of the Golden Boot Award for International Player of the Year in 2005. Anthony's career coincided with a big shift in the commercialisation of sport. He talks about the evolution from his first contract worth $10,000 and drinking plenty of beer after every match, to the professional game it is today. Anthony also shares lessons learned from his humble upbringing, how he built a broad network and interests outside of rugby league and the challenge of growing the game nationally. Mini was in Adelaide to promote the Roosters' clash with the Storm at Adelaide Oval on June 24, and was able to squeeze in our interview between promotional duties. After finishing up the 2010 season with Almere and Hamburg and achieving his long term goal of pitching the Dutch Head Class, Boomer was undecided what to do about his baseball career and was leaning towards focusing on finishing law school and getting a job. After back-to-back years with no offseason and pitching 7-9 innings every start, his arm definitely needed a rest. However during the 2010 summer while on break from pitching in Holland, Boomer visited a girl living in Budapest (Hungary) whom he met while in Italy. While visiting her, he looked up baseball in Budapest online and found a local club of which he contacted by email with the help of his friend as a translator. They invited him out to practice and Boomer soon found himself practicing with grown men at a level he had never seen before, which was an interesting experience in itself and an eye opener. The Hungarians were immediately amazed as they had never seen anything close to a mid to upper 80's fastball and said to Boomer that they "would be honoured to have a chance to try and hit him." Boomer obliged and proceeded to mow them down throwing at about 75% velocity. Soon after they offered him a job to coach the national team for the following year but Boomer did not take the offer too seriously at the time because he was still playing for Almere and had not thought that far ahead about his playing career.......
