Mecklin Ragan is currently a General Surgery Resident in Fairfax , Virginia who hopes to become a Pediatric Oncology surgeon . She was also the older sister by 18 months of her brother James who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2006 at the age of 13. Mecklin tells the story of James who went through a 7 1/2 year protocol which unfortunately ended with his passing from Rice University during his sophomore year. Mecklin is the co-founder of the Triumph Over Kids Cancer Foundation, which is doing a great deal of work to help Pediatric Cancer patients and their families.

A listen back to a show from 2017 on the theme of Quiet. My guests in that two-part conversation were Orenda Fink, a musician, writer, and Jungian Depth Coach, and the Benedictine monk, Brother James Dowd. In the second part of the show we'll hear from Orenda Fink on her music and career, dream analysis, and how a health condition requiring the quiet of complete voice rest impacted her sense of self. First, we'll hear from Brother James Dowd on his path from New York theater to Nebraska monastery, contemplative life, and embracing silence.Brother James Dowd of the Order of the Holy Cross is the founding Prior of the Incarnation Monastery and the Community of The Benedictine Way, which was founded in 2018 in north Omaha. It is the first Benedictine monastery in the history of the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska. At the time of our 2017 conversation, Brother James had recently joined the staff of the Diocese for a two-year position as “Monk in Residence.” His ministry focused on enriching the community's prayer and spiritual life, and discovering and building better ways to befriend the poor in our communities. Prior to entering the monastery, Brother James lived in his home town of New York City, where for 20 years he worked as a director of more than 100 theater productions and numerous live events for television.Orenda Fink is a well known musician, performer, and songwriter. She has been writing, recording, and touring for critically acclaimed records since 1997. Fink got her start in Birmingham, Alabama, with the pop rock group Little Red Rocket. In 2000, she formed the ethereal folk duo Azure Ray with longtime friend Maria Taylor. Their music has regularly featured in film and television programs and Fink has collaborated widely on numerous other music projects. Currently residing in California's Mojave desert, Fink is a certified Jungian Depth Coach with a specialization in shadow work and dream interpretation. Later this year I'll be in conversation with Fink about her new memoir, “The Witch's Daughter: My Mother, Her Magic, and the Madness that Bound Us” which will be available in August. At the time of our 2017 show on the theme of Quiet, Fink reflected back on her musical origins, self-reflection brought about by emergency surgery to correct a misdiagnosed heart defect, and the implications for her sense of self in the world when she was required to take an extensive period of complete voice rest.

How would it feel to jump late on to a band wagon many others had already jumped on? How do you anticipate James was welcomed by the disciples? How do you think this slowness to see impacted James in his ministry? Acts 15:12-21 12 The whole assembly kept silence and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the gentiles. 13 After they finished speaking, James replied, “My brothers, listen to me. 14 Simeon has related how God first looked favorably on the gentiles, to take from among them a people for his name. 15 This agrees with the words of the prophets, as it is written, 16 ‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the dwelling of David, which has fallen; from its ruins I will rebuild it, and I will set it up, 17 so that all other peoples may seek the Lord— even all the gentiles over whom my name has been called. Thus says the Lord, who has been making these things 18 known from long ago.' 19 “Therefore I have reached the decision that we should not trouble those gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but we should write to them to abstain only from things polluted by idols and from sexual immorality and from whatever has been strangled and from blood. 21 For in every city, for generations past, Moses has had those who proclaim him, for he has been read aloud every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

You simply need to choose and practice it. And you are promised peace beyond all understanding. Sound too good to be true? I get it. I'm a natural skeptic. Yet this natural skeptic is an example. I can tell you that it truly works. Yet it isn't one and done. It is a lifestyle choice.First of all, think of your favorite people. Are they grateful? Or selfish? Do they tell you thanks? Or do they complain? Do they appreciate you or take you for granted? Do they do/say kind things for you? You are getting the point.Now you. Let's focus on you. If we polled those closest to you, what would they say about you? Which side do you reflect?Truth, I can be both. I was once voted the worst boyfriend in the world, not once but twice by two different women (one my eventual wife). So I rallied some, how?Phil 4: 6-8, if you want to be great. I believe this is one of the greatest verses for Giving Thanks!Whether you believe in God or not, check out this verse and promise...Philippians 4:6-8New International Version6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.Peace beyond all understanding?! Could we use some more of that? Of course. Even an atheist would want that. Who wants to be around some one bitter and edgy? Yet here is the key. Instead of going to __________ your coping mechanism. I'm going to challenge you to pray. You may be lifting this verse 100X. There have been days that I have. Memorize it. Then you lift to God what plagues you. Tell Him what you don't like. And then, here is the key, look for the good. Give thanks for what IS worthy. Keep doing it. Surround yourselves with like minds/hearts committed to doing the same. You will experience peace beyond all understanding. I'm living proof and I know many others that will tell you the same. When in doubt, try it. Faith does not exist without doubt. So challenge for your and your loved ones when you gather in November or July. Any time. Practice above. Share where you are grateful. Share what you appreciate about who sits in front of you. Brother James followed the Lord's leading to serve in the Middle East. He arrived for what he expected to be one year of service knowing almost nothing about Islam or the culture in which he would be serving. He remembers being startled awake the very first morning by the Muslim call to prayer, wondering who was screaming at 4:30 in the morning! Soon he would understand that he was serving in a culture where choosing to follow Christ could cost one's life. He would also come to understand that God's call would last much longer than one year. He acknowledges that there are times when fear rises up in him but says as Christians, we must not let fear drown out the call God has placed on us. His prayer in times of fear is a simple one: “Lord, don't let them see me shake.” During years living among Muslims, the Lord clearly confirmed James' calling to serve in the Middle East through several Bible verses – Isaiah 40:28-31, Isaiah 41: 10-13, and John 14:13-14. And he has experienced God's protection and covering, sometimes in miraculous ways. Listen for the story of James asking Jesus to be “the Great Mechanic”—and how God answered his prayer. Christian persecution for our brothers and sisters in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan or Lebanon often comes first from members of their own family. Many Muslims there have an incorrect view of Christianity and are often surprised when they meet a follower of Jesus and understand what the Bible really teaches. James says Muslims are often open to conversation about religion, and shares stories from his time in the region. James encourages listeners to pray for persecuted Christians in the Middles East as they face attacks from family members and governments.
