In this episode, host Dr. I. David Daniels speaks with Kimberly Williams, a former diplomat in the U. S. Foreign Service turned Human Resources Executive, whose experience of abusive behavior while serving in HR fuels her advocacy for the passage of laws that will make the workplace more psychologically healthy and safe. A surprisingly high percentage of HR professionals are exposed to psychosocial hazards in the workplace. A common example is “undermining professional integrity,” which means HR professionals are made to feel inept in their jobs or have employees or colleagues go over their heads to get a decision made higher up. This can cause a severe confidence crisis for the professional. HR professionals are also sometimes bullied by an employee with whom they were involved in an HR issue, which suggests that there needs to be a change in culture or attitude towards the role HR professionals play in organizations. Others were being bullied or harassed by their immediate line manager, which limited how they dealt with the issue as they had to bypass their manager. Some of those bullied by their manager dealt with it by doing nothing and ignoring the issue, as they felt they couldn't do anything due to the nature of the working relationship and the seniority of the bully. Kim's work in this space has not only helped others seeking solace from their workplace-related abuse, but it has also inspired her daughter as a teenager to pick up the mantle in both her school and the broader community to advocate for psychologically healthy places and spaces.

In this episode, Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Sandra Jean, a Human Resource Executive and a Licensed Attorney. She is also the author of the best-selling book “Human Resources: A Practical Guide on Effective Workplace Management” and founder of the Jean Consulting Group. Too often, when HR professionals are consulted about workers' mental and emotional health, it is because there is a problem that has occurred or a worker is having some mental or emotional issue that people leaders are unable to address. Attorneys are consulted when an employee is threatening or has filed a legal action or an employer has taken an employment action that the worker sees as not in their interest. Based on her Labor and Employment Attorney practice and experience as a Human Resources Executive, Sandra Jean has been involved at both ends of these conversations, including representing labor unions and companies in human resource-related legal matters and negotiations. Ms. Jean will share several tips regarding how an organization can be psychologically safer for workers while at the same time being productive and profitable for employers by focusing on the relationship between the organotin and the human being that is a part of the organization. Both goals are achievable before she is asked to defend or initiate legal action to achieve the same ends.

Teresa Vozza is a certified Executive Coach and Leadership Expert, as well as a passionate advocate for eradicating burnout in the executive ranks. Her goal is to help people (especially women) achieve greatness without the grind.According to statistics, 60% of women are burnt out. And, they are burning out at a much faster pace than men.In this conversation, we talk about:- Social conditioning and how that plays into how women show up at work- Recognizing patterns that are harming us- Warning signs to catch early on/before it's too late- Replacing behaviors (or what to do instead)- How to understand and protect yourself“I confused my high sense of urgency, hustle, and responsiveness as almost my superpowers. I thought that those things were going to get me ahead and I had proof they did – because I continued to receive promotions. That was the way I was going to lead and continue to enjoy success… But, it led to me experiencing major anxiety and ending up on a stretcher, headed to the ER, with a diagnosis of severe burnout. At the time, I had no idea what I was going through. I didn't know what to look for. I just knew how to push and to work.”Whether you identify as a woman or work with women, this conversation is an important one. I hope you'll join us!-----Teresa Vozza is a leadership expert, certified executive coach, and former Human Resources Executive with over 20 years of corporate experience, most recently at Allianz Partners as CHRO. I'm a longtime listener of C-CRETS, a career advice podcast for people of color with C-suite ambitions from hosts who've been there. I also walk through six steps you can take to begin a career in technology. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:55] Alan's career journey and fighting for opportunities for BIPOC employees [16:60] The breaking point and why Alan started Kadima Careers [25:10] Why care about providing opportunities for BIPOC [28:01] Receipts on representation in the tech industry [32:58] What can BIPOC and female employees do to be ready for Big Tech jobs [36:09] How to survive and thrive in Big Tech companies KEY TAKEAWAYS: Companies are looking to hire BIPOC employees. Make them aware that you are BIPOC or female in a subtle way with a link to your LinkedIn photo or make specific references on your resume about involvement with any diversity organizations or HBCUs. Sometimes you just need to be around black women. The story that black women don't support each other is a myth. The story that we are infinitely strong and resilient is also a lie. Sometimes, you need to lay aside the strength and let go of the resilience and just take a pause. Take off the mask. Take off the armor. And just have a little banana pudding and peach cobbler. And a few adult beverages. And talk about the stuff that just makes you crazy without having to explain the backstory. You will want to write this down – boss sister! I'll wait while you get a pen and paper, or you could just pause this episode for a second - GIGGLE I am so excited to share a new leadership maxim with you. It has a success rate better than Elle Wood's Bend and Snap. This maxim actually has a 100% success rate. It has worked every time I have employed it in a meeting. As you know, I've spent my professional career as a Human Resources Executive in the manufacturing sector, so I've spent a lot of time in meetings with dominating male voices. Many of you are in the same situation whether in ministry or the marketplace. I was blessed to be on staff at my church as the Director of Women's Ministry where our staff meetings were comprised of four male ministers and four female staff members, two of which were Directors. We had great conversations. Our male counterparts were always interested in what we had to say. Female Leaders listen up - Our voices, opinions and experiences matter, but it can be difficult sometimes to break into male dominated conversations. Today, in this influence episode, I am going to show you how to interject this leadership maxim in meetings and conversations that will help you regain control of the subject and/or completely redirect the discussion to where you want it to go whether in ministry or the marketplace. Welcome to episode #28.
