Warning: this is an adults-only show. David Baker, the Australian based author of The Shortest History of Sex, takes us through two billion years of sexual evolution. And, from the first microbial exchanges of DNA to Darwin and Freud, Tinder and sexbots, it's not a pretty story. The good news, however, is that neither Baker nor I took off our clothes or confessed to any unusual fetishes. But we did talk about the sexual significance of Baker's mustache which, I suspect, represents a kind of climax to two billion years of procreation and recreation. David Baker is a history and science writer who holds the world's first PhD in Big History (the field that explores patterns in deep time and across the natural and social sciences). He is an award-winning lecturer, has written educational videos seen by millions of people, and is the author of The Shortest History of Our Universe. He lives in Tropical North Queensland, Australia.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On is a reader-supported publication. We will be doing part 2 ... "5 Things Husbands want their wives to know about sex."Support the show
In this episode, we talk about vaginas, vulvas, sex and sex toys, because we can! As young people we all tend to assume that older people don't have sex, but we midlife women know better, don't we? It may be more complicated for us, for a variety of reasons, but women in mid and later life are still sexual beings and we have every right to enjoy our intimate life just as much as we did when we were younger. But we all know that there can be obstacles to this, such as dryness, pain, recurrent infections and loss of libido, so my guest today is here to help with all that, because there's nothing she doesn't know about how to manage all these pesky issues that get in the way of a happy and fulfilling sex life. My guest in this episode is the brilliant Samantha Evans. She has a background in nursing, so she knows all the nitty gritty about our intimate areas and she's the founder of Jo Divine, an online sex toy company designed to support people to enjoy sexual intimacy and pleasure by using skin-safe products and irritant-free lubricants and moisturisers. We discuss everything from how to manage UTIs and thrush to why and how to use a sex toy to maximise your pleasure. What I love about Sam is that she completely normalises what is a sensitive subject for many of us, and she's so practical and supportive with her advice. Nothing is off the table with her and it's a wild ride of a conversation, so get your notebooks ready, buckle in and tune in to hear what she's got to say!If you've enjoyed the podcast, remember to subscribe so you don't miss the next episode and please give it 5 star rating and a short review on Apple podcasts, or whichever platform you listen on, I'd be so grateful. And do tell your friends and family about it too. It really does make a huge difference to the visibility of the podcast, so that more women can find the show. After all, every woman deserves to have a happy menopause. Check out the full Show Notes for this episode on my website www.well-well-well.co.uk/podcast, where you'll find all the relevant links and references for my guest. Fan Alessandra Rosso needed us to confirm whether this NYT bestseller was actually trash because the main character “could have been replaced by a potted plant and I am not sure it would have changed the story.” And it's a short book? Thank you to our Icelandic listener Jessic Lyn Webb who told us that this NYT bestseller was “truly the most heinous misjustice to storytelling I have every had the pain of reading,” and included lots of borderline harmful takes on mental illness. A VERY SPECIAL BONUS EPISODE: We read Murder on Sex Island by Jo Firestone, suggested to us by friend of the pod and talented comedian Jo Firestone! It's not YET a bestseller, but we jumped at the chance to cross-examine the author and dig down deep on why they made the weird choices they made. Fake teeth? A blonde wig? Is Sex Island just Love Island??? We had to know more. This book comes out TODAY (October 17) and you can buy it here: https://a.co/d/i7unYOs - Jo self-published so YES you can listen to her podcast version of the book for free but YES you should still buy the book! Here's the Season 16 reading list:Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuistonThe Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele RichardsonRomantic Comedy by Curtis SittenfeldRun Rose Run by James Patterson and Dolly PartonEverything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex by David ReubenThe House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ KluneSupermarket by LogicBrooklyn by Colm ToibinSend any future book suggestions to meanbookclub@gmail.com! THE sex manual of 1969 (yeah baby) is also one of the all time best selling books EVER in America. Yeah, if you were breathing in 1969, odds are: YOU READ THIS BOOK. But is it a radical, liberal education on "fun sex" or a truly disturbing attack on women, aging, and homosexuality that you cannot even FIND in libraries today? We have award-winning podcast host and best-selling author DAN SAVAGE (instagram.com/dansavage/?hl=en) on the cast to help us find out. Again listener Ashleigh C convinced us to read a Patterson book because Dolly Parton co-wrote it as “it's very loosely autobiographical.” So we took on 17-week NYT bestseller by Dolly Parton and James Patterson. There's a companion country album? Yes please. We also have special guest - comedian, showrunner and fellow Pennsylvanian Leo Allen, the man behind such classic shows as Nathan For You, Review with Forrest MacNeil, Jon Benjamin Has a Van and yes, even Saturday Night Live. Plus: he's a HUGE Dolly fan. We also have special guest - comedian and actress Caroline Cotter, who has appeared on late night shows from Conan to Late Night with Seth Meyers. So we knew she would love to whine about this on. That recent scene in 'The Idol,' the one where the intimacy coordinator gets locked in a bathroom, was fully unrealistic. So what does an intimacy coordinator do? They choreograph intimacy scenes and help filmmakers not get canceled. What do they work on besides sex? Well anything involving nudity, including bodily functions and medical procedures. What do they bring to a set? Mints, strapless underwear, and a lot of tape. Sam chats with Intimacy Coordinator Adelaide Waldrop about the misconceptions that directors, producers and the public still have about this Hollywood role, even after it first gained attention following #MeToo. For this episode, we will listen to Melissa's talk at the Masterclass for Urologists last June. We all know that talking about sexual health can be a bit awkward. But it's important to remember that patients are sexual beings too! GP's play a vital role in ensuring their patients' sexual health and wellbeing, and part of that is being able to talk about sexual function openly and comfortably. On June 11th 2022, Melissa was invited to be a guest speaker for a Perth Urology Clinic's Masterclass and her topic was “Why patients are embarrassed to ask their GP about sex”. We sent out a survey asking our audience various questions on the subject which received an overwhelming response, with over a quarter taking the time to fill it out (we really appreciate this)! To know the results and how Melissa nailed her presentation, have a listen! Specifically, about how his nervous system handles sex. Continuing on the theme this week—first Dr. Laurie Watson and now my own work. I've asked this question at men's weekends, in coachings, and the answer almost always surprises me. A lot of men know the very, very basics of arousal in their own bodies, but that's...it. Producers note: Mature subject matter around sex is discussed in this episode. As we've been learning in our Dating, Sex and Relationship series, there is no one right way to go about finding satisfaction in these areas of life. And the same is true for sex. You deserve to find joy and pleasure in your body and your sexuality just as you are, no matter what. There are so many things that culture has told us about our bodies and our sexuality that aren't true. We're going to walk through some of those misnomers and some healthy ways to approach sex with our very wise guest, sex educator and return visitor to our show, Emily Nagoski. Emily describes her mission as helping women live with joy and confidence inside their bodies. She wants us to know that our bodies have wisdom to share, and that our bodies can be trusted–their intuition is actually good for us and our protection. She explains what a sex drive is (actually, what it isn't, because it's not actually a thing–surprise!). Emily also shares key findings from couples who sustain strong sexual connection over the long term (and those two things aren't what people most generally think they are). In this frank conversation about sex, Emily encourages us to lean into our sexual pleasure and shake off any hesitations that are usually due to cultural shame or baggage. And if you think that exploring your sexuality isn't possible with a busy career, kids, and other responsibilities, Emily removes the myth that scheduling sex makes it less hot. When we normalize all sorts of sexual responses, we remove barriers that keep us from making space for all this pleasure that has always been ours to claim. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Trusting the message your body is sending you more than anyone else's expressed opinion about what should be happening with your body. We can believe our bodies over and above anybody else's opinion about bodies.” - Emily Nagoski “We actually heal ourselves when we allow uncomfortable feelings to melt through our bodies. On the other side of it, that process has healed our bodies and freed us from the lies that we were told when we were small.” - Emily Nagoski “What is it that I want when I want sex? And what is it that I like when I like sex? And talk about those answers with your partner. And it'll help you to remember why. If there is a ‘why' for sex in your relationship, this will help you remind you why.” - Emily Nagoski “The person you are is a person worth being. This is the whole you're enough, but the thing is–you are enough. It is only in this like culturally constructed comparison against a fictional and often deliberately unachievable ideal that we torture ourselves about the way our sexuality works.” - Emily Nagoski “I got taught to put on a show. I got taught that men really like it when women seemed to be having a good time. So I got taught to act like I was having a good time so that he would like it. And there's this big, deep irony that I was learning to put on the show of pleasure, without even asking whether or not I was actually experiencing pleasure.” - Emily Nagoski “There is no quota of pleasure. There's no such thing as too little pleasure. And there's no such thing as too much pleasure. Nobody gets to judge or decide about your experience of pleasure.” - Emily Nagoski “If you're a person who needs to like and admire your partner and you need to know that they like and admire you, that they respect you, that they are there for you, then there is no amount of lingerie or handcuffs or porn or role play is ever going to make you interested in having the sex available to you with a person whom you don't trust.” - Emily Nagoski “Let's make a world with less body shame. Let's make a world where girls are raised to believe that they have a basic right to bodily autonomy and that pleasure is their birthright. They have the right to all the pleasure that their body is capable of experiencing without being afraid of it or ashamed of it or needing to prioritize somebody else's pleasure over theirs.” - Emily Nagoski “Neurologically, pleasure is a practice. The more we practice paying attention to pleasure, the easier it is for our brains to notice pleasure.” - Emily Nagoski “Have pleasure. Desire will follow.” - Emily Nagoski Emily Nagoski's LinksEmily's website Emily's Instagram Books & Resources Mentioned in This Episode Dr. Bessel VanDerKolk For the Love Podcast Episode (Your Body Keeps the Score) Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski Amelia Nagoski Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life (Emily's new book) Magnificent Sex: Lessons from Extraordinary Lovers by Peggy Kleinplatz ACE resources toward understanding asexuality from The Trevor Project Orgasms for Two by Betty Dodson Donald Hall's Essay about marriage “The Third Thing” Ms. Marvel - TV Show on Disney+ Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube

Marriage and healthy sexuality are under assault in our current culture. Sexuality is a subject that is not normally addressed in church and when it is, it is mostly about the “don'ts”. What we are not supposed to do is clear, but what is godly sexuality like? In this episode of the Limitless Spirit Podcast, our host Helen Todd welcomes Dr. Juli Slattery to talk about Biblical marriage and sexuality. Juli is a clinical psychologist, author, speaker and the president and co-founder of Authentic Intimacy. Juli earned her college degree at Wheaton College, an MA in psychology from Biola University, and an MS and a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology. Her latest book, “God, Sex, and Your Marriage” challenges the common assumptions couples have about sexuality and presents the richer biblical narrative of sex as a metaphor for God's covenant love. In this episode, Juli helps to answer the question: what is God's perspective on marriage and sexuality?
