In Part 1 of Season 12, Episode 7, I'm joined by John Hughes and John Mahaffey. John Hughes, is one of only 448 among approximately 30,000 PGA members to reach Master Professional Status. He has been recognized by Golf Digest as a top instructor in Florida, and The Golf Range Association as a Top 100 Growth of the GAme Instructors. During our conversation, John offers his perspective on whether investing in the latest and greatest golf equipment can enhance your game or if those funds are better spent on lessons. He also provides strategies for setting effective golf goals, discussing whether to aim for reducing stroke counts or going after milestone scores such as breaking 100, 90, or 80. Following John, I welcome back 1970 NCAA National Champion and 1978 PGA Champion John Mahaffey. John was a great player, but he's an even better person which I hope you get a sense of as you listen to his insights. John shares the ironic story of winning the 1978 American Optical Classic by two strokes over Dr. Gil Morgan—the only optometrist on Tour. He also weighs in on the upcoming structural changes to the PGA Tour, including reduced field sizes and fewer available Tour cards. Additionally, John names one of the most formidable competitors from the 70s and 80s—a choice that may surprise listeners. Finally, he offers a unique perspective on why former President Donald Trump might be the key to bringing together the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger. Tune in for these great conversations, expert insights, and much more on this week's episode!

On this edition of Next on the Tee my guests are 1986 Players Champion John Mahaffey, Titleist Manager of Preferred Player Promotions Michael Gibson, Soleta Golf Club Developer David Turner, and Popticals CEO Gary DiSalvo. John Mahaffey shares his memories of Arnold Palmer and how the King helped him get his life straightened out after 10+ years of drinking. We look back to the early days of The Player Championship when it first moved over to the Pete Dye Stadium course and what it's like trying to deal with the swirling winds around the 17th hole. John compares it to trying to figure out how the winds swirl on the 12th hole at Augusta National. We also get an update on his Nemesis mystery novel series. If you love golf wrapped inside a mystery check out his books, Shafted, Unfinished Business, and Dead Quiet on Amazon or www.johnmahaffeyauthor.com. Michael Gibson is one of the all-time great club and golf ball fitters. He has a true passion for it. At the end of each day he asks himself if he did everything he could to help the people he worked with that day. Michael and I talk through how to test which is the right golf ball for our game. We also get into how to figure out the correct bounce and grind for your wedges based on your local turf conditions. David Turner is a Developer currently working with Nick Price and David Ledbetter on a new private golf club outside of Sarasota called Soleta Golf Club. We hear why it's important to all of them not to disturb the local wetlands and preserve the natural surroundings. No homes will be built on the course so players will be consumed by the game and nature. It is set to be one of the premier private clubs in the country. They are aiming to have it ready for play in late 2024 or early 2025. Check out the course online at www.soletagolf.com. I round out this week's show with a visit from Popticals CEO Gary DiSalvo. Popticals are the best sunglasses I've ever worn. They are geared for people who enjoy being outdoors. They are second to none for blocking glare and helping us see with more clarity on the course, while fishing, hunting, skiing, whatever takes you outdoors. Gary tells us about their NYDEF polycarbonate lenses which are super lightweight but have the same clarity as glass. Their patented rail system allows us to fold them up and pack them away in a small hard case that protects them from breaking or getting scratched up if you prefer to keep them in your golf bag. The case also fits easily into your pocket, so if you're at a concert, it starts to get dark, or you go indoors, you don't have to ask someone to hold them for you, keep them sitting on top of your head, or hang them on your shirt. See these wonderful sunglasses online at www.popticals.com.

This week I am joined by 2 legends of the game, John Cook and John Mahaffey, plus one of the great players in Western Pennsylvania history Bob Friend Jr., and Top 100 Instructor and Pittsburgh native Eric Johnson. John Cook and I go back to his epic victory at the 1983 Canadian Open when he defeated Johnny Miller on the 6th playoff hole. We hear how, in his 2nd season on Tour, he held up to the pressure of trying to win arguably the 5th biggest event on Tour at the time, over a legend like Miller. We also get into the great things his father Jim did to advance PGA Tour purses plus John's course design work. John Mahaffey won the 1978 PGA Championship at Oakmont. We go back to that tournament and hear what it was like for him to get that win after having lost 2 previous US Opens. John would double down on that PGA victory by winning the very next week at the American Optical Classic over the only Optometrist on Tour, Dr. Gil Morgan. John also shares his memories of being a part of the victorious 1979 Ryder Cup team and why it's the most scared he's ever been. Bob Friend Jr. was a grinder on Tour for over 20 years. He's also one of the best players in Western Pennsylvania golf history. He won the 1984 & '85 Western Pennsylvania Amateur Championships. He backed that up by winning the '85 Pennsylvania State Amateur Championship. We hear about all 3 of those victories plus insights into some of the other great area courses he enjoys including his own club, Oakmont Country Club. Eric Johnson has been named a Top 100 Instructor for over a decade now. He spent 17 years at Oakmont CC, several of which were as the Director of Instruction. He's now at Yellowstone Golf Club in Big Sky, Montana. We hear about Yellowstone and some other great Montana courses that should be on our list to play. Eric recently took a trip to Southern California where he played Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, and Spanish Bay. If that wasn't great enough, he followed that up with a visit to Pine Valley. We hear about all of that plus we get a tip for how to play better as the temperatures go down and the turf gets harder.

We also discuss: Ron Sirak shares his thoughts on the Women's US Open, the escalating purses on the PGA & LPGA Tours, his thoughts on who is the greatest of all-time on the men's side, his long-time friendship with Arnold Palmer, plus he reminds us of the greatness of Ben Hogan. Jay Delsing and I go back to his days as a top junior golfer and what it was like making it to the quarterfinals of the US Junior Golf Tournament. We hear about his college days at UCLA playing alongside Corey Pavin, Steve Pate, and Duffy Waldorf, his greatest thrill being paired with Arnold Palmer, and his final round 61 at the 1993 FedEx St. Jude Classic. John Mahaffey and I go back to 1975 and his T10 finish in The Open Championship and what it was like competing against Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Trevino, Floyd, and the superstars of the 70s and 80s. David Ogrin shares stories from his T13 finish at the 1983 US Open at Oakmont and what it's like putting on those greens. Fourteen years later, at the 1997 US Open, he finished T10 but says his brother-in-law cost him and Tom Lehman a shot at winning. Unlike many Open Champions, Tom Watson did not have to wait long to get his hands on the Claret Jug. Also unlike other Champion Golfers, Watson was prolific in golf's original Major to an historic degree, with a large portion of his victories in The Open coming while he still disliked the challenge of links golf. One of the most successful golfers in history, and a steely competitor with a tenacious game, Watson accomplished an immense amount on the British Isles in his lifetime. And as the Kansas City native learned to embrace links golf, all while earning a reputation as one of the most gracious and respectful Champions in the game, fans of The Open embraced him in return.   In this brand new three-part documentary, hear from the legendary Tom Watson, his manager Barry Hyde, his friend and Major Champion John Mahaffey and one of Tom's greatest rivals and inspirations, Jack Nicklaus, in an exploration of what made Watson one of the greatest Open Champions of all time.   Listen to the third and final edition of this series, only on The Open Podcasts.

Back from rock bottom... Trey McCall, an up-and-coming superstar on the golf circuit, staggered past a mirror and gasped at his reflection; horrified, he froze and stared at his pathetic image—sweating profusely through a torn and faded Bob Seger tee shirt, eyes blood red and glazed, hands shaking, mouth dry and scratchy as sandpaper. The disciplined essence of an athlete, a thing of the past—each intoxicated day mirrors the last and the next—lured from his principled sheltered life on The Circle M Ranch by unscrupulous forces in the real world. Suddenly fully aware—he must escape this highway to nowhere—to regain purpose in and for his life. The obstacles were infinite—four truths, his only vehicle: He would need significant help to get there. He must own his past to have a future. Karma is real. Trust is earned. Lucky Richards, his nefarious business manager—a catalyst for disaster—vanishes, leaving in his wake an international trail of egregious felonies implicating McCall and his family. Survival becomes Trey's primary concern, as golf takes a backseat.

The winner of the 1978 PGA Championship at Oakmont, John Mahaffey, begins his story by recalling life as a young man growing up in Texas and learning the game the way most Texans did, in the dirt and the wind. He recounts his collegiate career playing for Coach Dave Williams at the University of Houston, winning team and individual NCAA titles before heading off to Champions Golf Club to work for Jackie Burke and Jimmy Demaret and hone his game. Later introduced to Ben Hogan, John was the first professional signed on to represent Mr. Hogan's company. Mr. Hogan sent him to Canada to learn how to play for money before sending him off to Tour Qualifying School in 1971. John Mahaffey tells us his early story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
