Is it true that “you can't believe” anything you read? Can we consume news with a mindset other than cynicism, outrage, or fear? Host Curtis Chang welcomes journalist and author Jon Ward to discuss why Christians need to care about a well-functioning news culture. With an AP poll on mainstream media showing trust at an all-time low, they explore the reasons behind this crisis—political isolation, social media's influence, and potential media bias. Together, they offer a framework for healthy news consumption, focusing on the postures of spectator, student, and servant, while Jon shares his personal strategies for staying informed in a fractured media landscape. In this episode, we are joined by Sarah McCammon, National Political Correspondent at NPR, to discuss her book Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church. In it, Sarah tells a compelling, personal story about family, marriage, politics, and church—and she concisely boils down insights from scholars like David Gushee, Kristin Kobes Du Mez, Christian Smith, and others you'll hear her reference. If the great de-churching currently happening in American society is most acutely felt by Gen Z and Millennials, Sarah's story is right in the heart of that. And since no one really knows where the future is headed, one question to ask is: If evangelicals or other religious Americans leave the fold, what replaces that unique sense of purpose, transcendent faith, and community? Joining Sarah to discuss that and other urgent questions is Ruth Graham, the brilliant New York Times' religion, faith, and values reporter. Guests: Sarah McCammon Ruth Graham Additional Resources: The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church, by Sarah McCammon "Evangelical Writer Who Influenced Purity Culture Separates from Wife," by Sarah McCammon and Ruth Graham "Two Evangelical Leaders on 'Radical Faith'," by Ruth Graham Testimony: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Failed a Generation, by Jon Ward

Did evangelicalism fail a generation? How do disillusioned Christians process their experiences in churches and hold on to their faith? How do families divided over Trump find common ground? In this revealing episode, I sit down with Jon Ward, journalist, author, and chief national correspondent at Yahoo! News, to discuss his latest book, Testimony: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Failed a Generation. Jon Ward describes his life as being divided in half: two decades inside the evangelical Christian bubble and two decades outside of it. In Testimony, Ward tells the story of his upbringing in, and eventual break from, an influential evangelical church in the 1980s and 1990s (more about that particular church below). Ward sheds light on the evangelical movement's troubling political and cultural dimensions, tracing the ways in which he believes the Jesus People movement was seduced by materialism and other factors to become politically captive rather than prophetic. Full disclosure: the church Jon grew up in and which he strongly critiques in his book is the same that I joined at age 22 and went on to pastor for ten years. For me, this is a very personal conversation. Our discussion offers listeners a front-row seat to the intersection of faith, politics, and the challenges of reckoning with one's past. Interview Highlights: Jon's perspective on influential figures like CJ Mahaney and Al Mohler and their roles within the evangelical movement. The ramifications of political trends and the Trump presidency, on personal relationships and faith. Whether it's possible to be open to being wrong and still hold to absolute truth Comparing the roles of church leaders and the media in accountability and the parallels Jon sees between them. Jon's vision for the future of modern American Christianity and the steps he believes are crucial for its transformation. Whether you're entrenched in the evangelical community, just curious, or somewhere in between, this episode promises a candid exploration of faith, growth, and the complexities of human experience. Secular media is enthralled with exvangelicals... those former evangelicals who post some variation of "I've just been asking a lot of questions lately, and I've realized that organized religion doesn't have all the answers." Of course, turns out that "unanswered question" is usually the Problem of Evil... and every last Christian has had to answer the P.O.E. since the time of Adam. But investigating apostasy is helpful for other reasons as well, and Brian asks Nate about the storylines for such characters -- Jon Ward, Joshua Harris, Derek Webb, Glennon Doyle, and others being recent tragic examples. Turns out evil does not present a logical problem for Christians -- but it does present an emotional one. And the truth is, when you're clinging to sin, no matter how large, you've only got two choices: drop it and come to Jesus, or clutch it tight and try to remove your tender conscience from the Holy Spirit. And that's the exvangelical problem in a nutshell. #StoriesAreSoulFood #SASF #NDWilson #Exvangelicals #Evangelicals #Christians #ProblemOfEvil #POE #apostasy #repentandbelieve #JesusChrist #JoshuaHarris #DerekWebb #EnlightenMe #RachelMartin #JonWard #GlennonDoyle

It's no secret that politics has fractured the nation and the church, but perhaps the most painful casualty has been the family. If you have a family relationship (or two!) strained by politics, you're not alone! Today's guest, Jon Ward, a political reporter and the author of Testimony: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Failed a Generation, can relate. Today, he joins Keith to discuss why evangelicalism falls short in helping Christians learn how to think about politics. He shares the story of his upbringing, detailing his eventual break from an influential evangelical church. He details how the 2016 election and the controversy surrounding Donald Trump threatened to tear his family apart. Given his experiences, does he believe that our families should separate from politics? Should Christians even engage in the culture war to begin with? And how can we avoid prideful views of being better than “those” Christians on the other side? Listen now! Ok, truth time... Did you like this episode? Tell us by leaving a rating or review!

Evangelical voters are likely to play a significant role in deciding whether former President Trump will capture the GOP nomination in 2024. Jon Ward, chief national correspondent for Yahoo! News, knows that voting bloc well. Ward's new book, Testimony: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Failed a Generation, is about his upbringing in an influential evangelical church. Jon Ward, senior political correspondent for Yahoo News, joins Curtis to talk about his process of deconstructing - and reconstructing - his life as a follower of Jesus. Jon draws on his recently released book, Testimony: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Failed a Generation, to dissect the spiritual, social, political, and emotional dimensions of his years growing up as an insider in the evangelical world. Jon also provides a fascinating account of why his life as a journalist has been so crucial to his faith. Curtis offers the Biblical basis for why deconstruction - properly understood - is necessary for every generation of believers. From the Jesus Movement in the 1970s, through the Religious Right in the 1980s, the rise of New Calvinism in the 1990s, and the MAGA movement today, as a Christian kid in the suburbs and then a political journalist in Washington, Jon Ward has had a front seat to the most significant characters and events in American evangelicalism. He talks with Skye about his new autobiography, “Testimony,” and why he is still committed to Christian faith despite the failure of the movement that raised him. Also this week, early data shows a reduction in the number of abortions since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, but it's less than many predicted. The so-called “independent prophets'' are predicting God will kill Donald Trump's opponents next month. Why are they still supporting him when there are alternatives? And a report finds advocates of Christian Nationalism are more rooted in cultural heritage than Christian theology. Is anyone surprised? “What can people do about the fact that things are so tense with their families, especially when it comes to politics?” This is one of the pressing questions that Russell Moore poses to Jon Ward, Chief National Correspondent for Yahoo News. A long-time political reporter, Ward acutely perceives the relationship between religion and politics in America. His new book, Testimony: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Failed a Generation chronicles Ward's upbringing in, and eventual separation from, a well-known church that emerged at the intersection of Pentecostalism, the church growth movement, the Jesus Movement, and the New Calvinism. On this episode, Ward and Moore talk about what it's like to look back on the church experiences of their earlier years and notice the political manifestations they hadn't seen as young people. They talk about the ways various evangelical movements engaged society, the role of social media, and whether or not institutionalism is the answer to cultural problems. And they talk about what it looks like to maintain meaningful connections with family members when political differences threaten to break relationships. Tune in for a conversation that is full of heartfelt honesty and thoughtful insight not only into the state of American faith and politics today, but how we got here. It may have been the biggest investigative scoop of this year's election. This week, The Daily Beast reported that Herschel Walker, the Republican candidate for the US Senate in Georgia and a staunch opponent of abortion rights, paid for a girlfriend's abortion in 2009 - sighting documents that included a receipt from the abortion clinic, an image of a seven hundred dollar check from Walker, and a "Get Well" card signed by the former football star. Walker immediately denied the story. And insisted that he had no idea who the accuser was. But then The Daily Beast followed up with an equally astonishing story, that the woman was actually the mother of one of his children. What prompted the woman, still anonymous, to come forward now? And what impact will this have on one of the most important Senate races in the country? We talk to The Daily Beast reporter who broke the story, Roger Sollenberger, and Yahoo News' own Jon Ward. And then we chat with Slate's Dahlia Lithwick about the new Supreme Court term and her new book, Lady Justice.
