Asylum and 'home' - the impact of asylum dispersal and Syrian refugees' quest for home. Laurie Taylor talks to Jonathan Darling, Associate Professor in Human Geography at Durham University, about the system of housing and support for asylum seekers and refugees in Britain, from the first outsourced asylum accommodation contracts in 2012 to the renewed wave of outsourcing pursued by the Home Office today. Drawing on six years of research into Britain's dispersal system, and foregrounding the voices and experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, he argues that dispersal has caused suffering and played a central role in the erasure of asylum from public concern. Also, Vicki Squire, Professor of International Politics at the University of Warwick, discusses the narrative recollections of people who have survived the current Syrian War, only to confront the challenges of forced displacement and relocation, from the West Midlands to London, Canada. What is the meaning of home to those who are subjected to complex migratory journeys and carry memories of extended family, community and homeland in a conflict which has displaced half the population? How do refugees create home ‘away’ from home? Producer: Jayne Egerton

In these times it is really important to surround yourself with good people. That's what I did and got on a call with previous interview session guests Jonathan Darling (Ep 22) founder of Impact Leadership and Leyla Bakali-Laughton (Ep 55) founder of WE ARE UNDRESSED. During the conversation I thought it would be valuable to share our discussion. What you will hear is how three leaders who lead with love are all facing different challenges in the present times and are responding in different ways. Leyla has sped up which has brought opportunities and challenges while Jonathan has slowed down, bringing equally unique challenges and opportunities. I hope this proves insightful and gives you some inspiration for how you might show up during these times and look back and reflect on your leadership. Much love Ryan

Leadership and motivational speaker, Jonathan Darling, joined me on a synergistic podcast today to talk about self-sabotage, the first of a few videos with international speakers. Jonathan, who is from Knoxville, Tennessee, has a southern accent that most people aren't used to hearing. So this will be very interesting. In addition to that, academic self-sabotage, and self-sabotage, in general, is a growing problem that could be fixed -- but first needs to be addressed. Ep 22 of the Always Better than Yesterday Interview Sessions was with Jonathan Darling from Engage The Heart ‘an ordinary guy trying to make an extra-ordinary impact’. Jonathan spoke with such passion and I loved hearing him speak. He is an ultra marathon runner, leadership speaker and self branded ‘Heart-repreneur’ I love Jonathan’s view on leadership which is all about making a positive difference in the lives of others and to him, being a heart-repreneur means he connects with the hearts of others, leading with love to build self belief and purpose. We also took a dive into the mindset of ultra marathon running and becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. We also touched on community support and I love what he said about his own journey. By putting fear to one side and showing up, putting out what he believes, the right people have come into his life. This is something I can wholeheartedly relate to. This interview was a lot of fun and I have a lot of love for JD. Check out the full interview on Facebook | YouTube | Podcast Much love

Sometimes you meet people in life and you have a good feeling about them before you have even spoken. It is safe to say that is the case with Jonathan Darling. Through the serendipity of Instagram hashtags I was looking for posts under #makepositivitylouder and the second post I saw was Jon's. . His picture caption read "Took a root wring and jacked my ankle half way through. Really slowed me down but that's part of it". It really spoke to me because of the mental fortitude it takes to carry on sometimes when we hit a bump in the road. We connected on Instagram and I got him on the podcast for what I believe is an all time episode! . We chopped it up about positivity, Empathy, Jon's 24 hike challenge that changed his life, meeting his wife, writing leadership articles, raising children, and many more things. The conversation got me really fired up because of Jon's energy and passion that really spoke to me, we got really deep and spoke about a lot of areas of mental health and persona

Jonathan Darling, University of Manchester, gives a talk for the COMPAS seminar series. In this seminar I draw on my current research looking at how dispersal has worked across four UK cities historically, and how changes with the privatisation of provision has affected relations between asylum seekers and cities, between private providers and local authorities, and between local authorities and the Home Office. I will link to some of my past work around sanctuary, responsibility and generosity in terms of discussing spaces within cities that challenge the tensions of current governance structures and that enable different relations between asylum seekers and cities. Part of the story here is of the significance of local relations and contexts that are too readily ignored in top down dispersal processes and plans, so being able to speak across four different cities should enable some of these more hopeful stories to come to light.
Talk from Dr Jonathan Darling, Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Manchester. Jonathan is running an ESRC funded project, exploring the experiences of the asylum dispersal and accomodation programme in the UK. http://www.producingurbanasylum.com/
