Actress Camille Sullivan has acquired a boatload of awards and nominations over the course of her career for her work in an array of dramatic projects like Intelligence, Hunter Hunter, The Birdwatcher, and The Disappearance, but it's her work in a top-rated comedy series that's currently garnering her mad love from critics, fans, industry insiders, and the fine people of TikTok. The series in question is Shoresy, a spin-off of Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney's beloved comedy series, Letterkenny. Shoresy – which recently finished airing its third season and is lacing up for a fourth – follows the foul-mouthed, chirp-serving, mother-loving, fan favourite character from Letterkenny named Shoresy as he joins the Sudbury Bulldogs in a quest to never lose again. Camille is Laura Mohr, a reporter who covers the Bulldogs as part of her beat. Shoresy lights up like a Christmas tree whenever he lays eyes on Laura. It's adorable how the normally shit-talking Shoresy is so sweet and earnest during these interactions, and it's so much fun to watch Camille as Laura react with sparkling eyes, mild frustration, bemusement, and (mostly) committed to keeping professional boundaries intact. Camille can also be seen kicking all sorts of emotional ass in thrillers like Exile with Adam Beach, which is now on VOD, and will soon be seen in the highly anticipated Shelby Oaks, which will screen at the venerable Fantasia Film Festival this summer. In this funny and fascinating interview, Camille talks Shoresy, being a loner, acting in highly dramatic movies, why she doesn't miss auditioning in “the room,” and her dream to be the Nicolas Cage of Canada. Sometimes you never know that you need a movie until it up and smacks you in the face....On this special episode we dive into some heartfelt, self-depricating Can-Con hilarity that is an early contender for one of the best Canadian films of the year.  It's time for 'Hey, Viktor!'Twenty years removed from childhood fame as Little Viktor in 1998's 'Smoke Signals', Cody Lightning has been forced to move home to his reserve in northern Alberta. He still believes himself to be famous; even though the only parts he gets these days are porn & fracking commercials. But when Cody learns his wife and kids are leaving him for a younger, more successful actor, he decides it's time to quit fucking around and make his masterpiece; writing, directing, & starring in 'Smoke Signals 2: Still Smoking'.A documentary crew follows Cody on his journey around the Indigenous world— re-uniting the original cast, borrowing money from arms dealers, & realizing his vision... just in time to realize his vision was basically shit.If there's a Canadian 'This Is Spinal Tap' this is pretty much it as Cody tackles the the multi-headed hydra of writing, directing, producing and starring in his own feature....and he makes it look effortless while being hilarious. In advance of the film's release tomorrow we had the chance to sit own and talk with Cody about the origins of the film, the comedy of it all and so very much more....

"I got sick for a few years and I was getting tired of being in bed thinking about what I wanted to do. So I sent out a focus group study to golfers that had been on a list of mine from my previous business and it was a survey asking them multiple questions about what their pain points were in the golf industry. What I heard was the frustration around not knowing what club to buy, feeling like every club was marketed as better. Marketing had started to become more important than performance. The balance was out of whack. And in a moment it matched with my moral compass. My grandmother taught disabled children her whole life. I was around these kids and I didn't like seeing them being taken advantage of just like I felt golfers are being taken advantage of. I looked at my wife when I was still in bed and I said, "I'm going to start the Consumer Reports of golf" and she instantly said, "yes you are!". So I got my ass right out of bed and got to work." "The Golf Digest Hot List was the bible to tell golfers what to buy as a print publication at the time and they had staked claim to that. But they had yet to lay claim to the digital world, so like the wild west I wanted to put down my flag down before they did. I wanted to build trust with the most hardcore golfers out there, create a place where they could come and trust anything and everything that we put out there. Something that was honest and had integrity behind it rather than run by the manufacturers. I thought it would be 3-5 years before the manufacuturers got on board with it. I knew it would be a bit of a rub but man, was I ever wrong." ______________________________________________ We want to thank our partner inrange® for presenting this episode of The ModGolf Podcast! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/tiYKqRxn.jpg (https://www.inrangegolf.com/the-experience-range?lng=en) inrange® is a radar-based ball-tracking company that enhances the driving range experience by offering the most engaging gameplay and precise ball-tracking on the market. They tried to sue us and use any angle they could to shut us up. Manufacturers keep a lot of the small media companies quiet because of one simple thing: the small media companies and blogs didn't have a legal team but we did. I had a group behind me that knew what I was after and stood up for me as a legal team. None of these manufacturers didn't have a leg to stand on with any of these potential law suits and they knew it, and they wanted to threaten us to keep us quiet. But as soon as we fired back - and our biggest weapon was "if you want to sue us, great. But we're going to make it public and every letter you send us we be public record". To this day MyGolfSpy has never been sued and we have never taken an article down." "The golf consumer saw that someone who was fighting for them, which is exactly why MyGolfSpy became successful. We put the consumer first and the companies last. I don't care about the corporations, I care about the golfer and how they spend their hard-earned money. I don't want golfers spending more if it does not help them improve compared to what they already own. This is a philosophy that companies are not accustomed to because it has been engrained in us that we need the newest club that comes out." Click on the image below to watch our extended conversation with Adam on our Youtube Channel (https://youtu.be/8Yv33AqM-qc)! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/4JW2LA86.jpg (https://youtu.be/8Yv33AqM-qc) "When I first created MyGolfSpy my vision was to make the cream of the crop rise to the top and have all the junk go away. In order to do that there were small companies like Sub70, Vice and EvenRoll who now have bigger names partly because we leveled the playing field and we gave them a place to be heard about. Golf Digest isn't writing about these small companies because they are not getting paid to do so. We said "here's what we're willing to do. If a product performs in the top X percent of our testing and we believe that that product or service is a standout we will then spotlight them to help amplify the messaging to keep these brands who deserve it on the tip of golfer's tongues through content marketing." "We had to diversify in the beginning in order to survive for the long term. I looked at MyGolfSpy as a Proof of Concept. This wasn't something that I did for the money. I did this to try and change an industry that I believed needed changing. It had gotten out of hand. So I said, "I'll give it a few years to see if it works and if it does I'll reinvest my own money to go to the second phase and build our own test facility. But if no one likes this or cares, I'll move on and do something else". We have grown every year with the reader and the consumer. It's a testiment that proves that the golf consumer has an apetite for this information. So to create something sustainable for the long term we could not rely on the advertising dollars. I see MyGolfSpy as a 100 year business that survives long after I am gone." In this heartfelt episode, I had the chance to reconnect with my dear friend and discuss the importance of Native American representation in media and the bonds of family. We reminisced about our shared experiences with my late uncle, Gary, who played a significant role in our lives. He instilled in us the importance of taking in the light and love in the darkness. Listen in as we honor our heritage and the love that's shown through our people's unique way of gifting. We also took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on the challenges we faced while trying to make a movie in grad school. Despite the tribalism, arrogance, entitlement, and lack of support we encountered, we found strength in our mentor, Adam Beach, and the power of music. We acknowledged the importance of overcoming adversity and the transformative effect of travel on our lives. Lastly, we expressed our gratitude for the support received from friends and companies like JPS Computers and SMP Ink We discussed the impact of teaching, making art, and learning to play guitar on our personal and professional growth. Through it all, we've learned the value of having a specific goal in mind when pursuing a career and the significance of perseverance in achieving our dreams. You never know what you'll find when you walk into Sunshine House. There could be people singing karaoke or making get well cards for a friend. This resource centre in Winnipeg's centennial neighbourhood provides harm reduction supplies, a cup of coffee and community. In the center of this community: Drag. Feather Wolfe and Davey Francis Kole are the heart and soul of Sunshine House – and two of the Queens behind the Like That drop-in program, primarily focused on the LGBTQ2S+ community and invites them to come as they are. Chelazon Leroux sashayed into our hearts on the third season of Canada's Drag Race. The Dene drag queen from Saskatoon is one of the few Indigenous queens to grace Ru Paul's Canadian stage. But it's more than just stilettos, big hair and crowns; Chelazon is fierce, funny and proud to represent being Indigenous. In a world of queens, it can be a challenge for kings to find a place for themselves. Drag artists like Vancouver-based King Fisher, aka Jayme Andrews have had to fight to be part of the scene. But, clad in rhinestone, armour and love, they've won that battle. A drag performer of the Ktunaxa Nation, King Fisher challenges what drag should look like. Did someone say Landback? Colonization almost completely erased the space where two-spirit people exist within our communities. Anita Landback, who is from Millbrook First Nation, uses their drag as a love letter to their Mi'kmaq culture and to reclaim this space for themselves and future generations of two-spirit people. As much as many might wish they looked like Adam Beach, that's not the reality for most. Growing up, Tygr Willy loved watching Mr. Beach on the screen but didn't see themselves reflected. Through drag they're hoping to bring softer representation of Indigenous bodies and cultural intersectionality to a wider audience.

Brenna and Joe are checking out another Eden Robinson text: her award-winning 2000 novel Monkey Beach, along with Loretta Todd's 2020 adaptation. While we love the book - with its incisive mix of generational trauma, Haisla life and coming of age narrative - the film doesn't work for us - either as a standalone film or as an adaptation. The book includes great characters, a gripping narrative, and unflinching deaths, while the film has a handful of great performances (Adam Beach!), but is marred by a terrible script and distractingly bad CGI. Can you hear that? It's the sound of Dave taking 2002's Windtalkers off his shelf. The guys discuss how John Woo seems to miss the fundamental story at the heart of the movie this could be and favours Nicolas Cage and traditional war movie tropes. Adam Beach is solid in what turns out to be less of a role than Phil would like. Dave enjoys some of the action sequences but finds the plot of the movie doesn't hold up to its running time.

This week we cover John Woo's 'Windtalkers' the big budget MGM-backed blockbuster that famously flopped at the box office being panned by critics at the time of release in 2002.  Starring Nic Cage and Christian Slater as USMC sergeants tasked with looking after Navajo Codetalkers played by Adam Beach and Roger Willie, during the battle of Saipan in 1944. Despite its huge scale and attention to detail, the film fails to successfully tell the story of the bravery and sacrifice of the Navajo Codetalkers.   Join us as we attempt to unravel the missed opportunities of this failed epic. In the recently released film Swan Song,  Oscar winner  Mahershala Ali plays Cameron, an illustrator involved in a happy marriage,   father of one with another on the way.  He's also terminally ill. This being the future, a medical procedure exists which allows Cameron to be cloned and have his memories and DNA  implanted in the clone. The clone then returns to Cameron's wife Naomie Harris and family, so that they don't have to deal with the grief of losing him. In his first leading role, Mahershala Ali takes on a demanding role. Playing both  Cameron and his clone. Taking the stereotypical double role, he shaped it with such an amazing level of sensitivity and genuine craft, that he matched his work in his Oscar-winning Moonlight and The Green Book roles. He'll very likely be in the middle of the Critics Choice and Oscar races yet again. Swan Song also stars Glenn Close, Adam Beach, Awkwafina and is written for the screen and directed by our guest this week  Academy Award winner Benjamin Cleary

This week, Nathan and Clint go it along for a decidedly humdrum double feature in Travolta and Cage's careers — the early-aughts slumps Domestic Disturbance and Windtalkers! In Domestic Disturbance, Travolta squares off against a sleazy Vince Vaughn (still knee-deep in Gus Van Sant Psycho modes, channeling his blue-collar menace) as the latter weasels his way into Travolta's family as the Fun New Stepdad. Well, as it turns out, the Fun New Stepdad has a secret, and one he's willing to kill a way-too-good-for-this Steve Buscemi to protect! It's Movie of the Week schlock all the way down. On the other side of the equation, we go from mliquetoast to low-key racist, as John Woo starts wrapping up his too-short career in American film with the cliched, paternalistic Windtalkers. Ostensibly an ode to the Navajo code talkers who helped the Allies win WWII, Woo's outsized, melodramatic war epic decides to instead focus on how our perfect, saintly Navajo characters (led by a criminally underrated Adam Beach) help our white protagonists come to a better understanding of ourselves. Plus, no doves! What's with that?

Reel Injun is one of a kind. This documentary eloquently and concisely presents the history of Native American representation in film, from the start to now.  Since the capability to record became available, Natives were on screen. There has been a fascination with Native people since colonization and this film delves into that fascination. Along the way, stereotypes were created and perpetuated in film. These stereotypes framed mindsets and opinions about who Native people were, to non-Native people. What blows my mind is it also frames the minds of Native people. Misrepresentation in film and television influence how we as Native people see even ourselves. The film documents experiences and perspectives from people like Clint Eastwood, John Trudell, Adam Beach, and Chris Eyre. While referencing movies like The Searchers, Dances with Wolves, Stagecoach, The Fast Runner, and Dance Me Outside. Listen as we discuss how awesome this documentary is and why it is so important.   Ever since I met the hosts of Twindigenous, we wanted to review a movie together. Reel Injun resonates so much with us that we wanted to take the time to discuss this one, so glad we did! Listen as chat about how much we love this documentary and how powerful it is a film.

Follow us @thecherrypicks for future updates on podcasts presented by Cherry Picks. “Society doesn't know what to do with a woman over 50. They certainly don't know what to do with a woman over 50 who is sexy, who's comfortable with her desire, who also has children and doesn't see that as a contradiction.” -Beandrea July This week is the finale of the first season of CherryPop—what a fun ride it’s been!  Beandrea curates some of her favorite films about the lives of women of a certain age. We discuss the limitations of the “Madonna-Whore” binary (F-U Freud!) and how films have kept 50+ women in boxes and how they have also set them free. Beandrea also tells a BTS story about how a story she wrote for The New York Times “The Year Women Over 50 Reclaimed Their Right to Be Seen coincidently assisted a big Hollywood producer in getting investors.   Then we talk to the legendary actor, podcast host and producer Garcelle Beauvais (The Jamie Foxx Show, Coming to America, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) about her new podcast Going to Bed with Garcelle, which takes a candid look at sex alongside her girlfriends and celeb guests. She also gets real about her 30+ year career in Hollywood and the difference between intimacy scenes then and now. And she reveals her secret to longevity in the entertainment industry. Interview starts at 49:00 Movies & Television Waiting to Exhale  This drama about four women (Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Whitney Houston, Lela Rochon) in Phoenix looking for love was a huge box office success when it hit theaters in 1995. (You’ve probably seen that gif of Bassett setting a fancy car on fire in her lingerie…Yeah that’s from this movie.) Adapted from a novel of the same name from Terry McMillan, the film was directed by Forest Whitaker. We discuss how the pic nails what bad sex looks like in excrutiating detail and get curious about who we are allowed to see in actual sex scenes and who we don’t.  How Stella Got Her Groove Back  From a screenplay co-written by Terry McMillan also adapted from another one of her novels, Stella’s (Angela Bassett) story of finding love with a man half her age during her Jamaican vacation was a big hit—on the bookshelves and at the box office. We gush over how good the shower sex scene is in this movie (Hello Taye Diggs!) and how well it depicts the mundane and the ecstatic of romantic relationships. We also cannot stop talking about how good Queen Angela is at her craft. Like how has she been this good for so damn long?! It's Complicated Nancy Meyers’ hit rom-com about an empty nester mother (Meryl Streep) and her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) is a funny and well-crafted story about the possibilities for women of a certain age. We talk about Hollywood’s fear of a real woman’s aging body and how much of a relief it is NOT to be 20 years old anymore. And of course you won’t want to miss those posh Nancy Meyers kitchens that film Twitter is always gushing over.  Book Club Directed by Bill Holderman with a script co-written by Erin Simms, Book Club is the story of what happens when four friends of a certain age (Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen, Candice Bergen) get inspired by the steamy scenes in the novel Fifty Shades of Grey. We talk about Keaton’s androgyny, spanks humor, and why mothers shouldn’t have to wait until their kids are grown to have great sex. Late Night Late Night stars Emma Thompson as Katherine Newbury, a successful late night talk show host and comedian who has hit a fork in the road in her career. Written beautifully by Mindy Kaling (who also stars) and directed by Nisha Ganatra, we are truly baffled as to why this movie didn’t get the box office attention it deserved when it debuted post-Sundance in 2019. We discuss the clever role reversal in Kaling’s script that puts Katherine’s sex life front and center. Juanita  The great Alfre Woodard goes on her version of an Eat, Pray, Love journey that takes her far away from home to Montan. There she explores her spirituality and hooks up with a younger man (Adam Beach). We love how fresh this movie and its characters are and revel in how its one sex scene stands out from the rest. Gloria Bell Written and directed by Sebastien Lelio (A Fantastic Woman) Gloria Bell stars Julianne Moore as an empty nester mom with a passion for the dancefloor. This critical favorite from 2019 is an absolute delight that we can watch again and again. We discuss how hard it is to make MILF Extraordinaire Moore look “frumpy” and swoon over the aspirational lovemaking on display. Frankie  This criminally under-rated gem of an indie premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Ira Sachs who co-writes the screenplay with Mauricio Zacharias, the film stars the fabuleuse Isabelle Huppert (Her) as Frankie. Frankie convenes her extended family on a vacation in a quaint Spanish town in the mountains. We discuss the unfair critical reception to the film and how good it feels to be skin to skin with the one you love.  Otherhood Three friends (Angela Bassett, Felicity Huffman, Patricia Arquette) take an impromptu trip to New York City to reconnect with their adult sons on Mother’s Day in this Netflix hit directed and co-written by Cindy Shupack (Sex and the City). We discuss the politics of getting this and other movies like it made in an industry that prizes youth above all else and why that makes bad financial sense.  The Interview  This week, we have a great chat with veteran Hollywood actress Garcelle Beauvais. She got her start as a model as a teenager and from there transitioned into acting. Her first role was in one of the most well-known comedies of the 1990s: Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America. Over her more than 30 year career, she has acted in film and television including The Jamie Foxx Show and the upcoming reboot of Coming to America from writer Kenya Barris. We discuss how the industry has evolved when it comes to shooting intimate sex scenes (and how it hasn’t) and the importance of not letting people pigeonhole you into one thing. And you won’t want to miss her dishing about her steamy new podcast Going to Bed with Garcelle, which was just renewed for a second season by MGM. Credits CherryPop is presented by CherryPicks. Our hosts are Beandrea July (Twitter @beandreadotcom) and Meg McCarthy (IG megjomccarthy). The show is recorded, produced and mixed by Beandrea July. Why is the guy at Ally's restaurant like a character from The Simpsons? How great is it to have Adam Beach back for one more appearance? How happy are we that Patty D is back and how perfect is she as Bosco's mother? Is Kim unfairly put in a lot of shit this episode? Why doesn't Cruz get invited Doc's party? Who is the douchenozzle detective guy? What has happened to Kylie and is she ok? How is dirty kid involved in the episode? How great is the camera work around Doc when he confronts Steeper? How great is it to hear Dorvell 'having a whinge' more so than Ben for once? How great are the subtle moments from Doc in this episode in the lead up to next week? How great does Anthony Ruivivar sell Carlos and not knowing how to deal with a family? Do we like Monroe's quick turn around or is it annoying? Have we started a new trend by using #SassySasha? Do we love sassy Mary? How annoying is Audrey and how much do Ben and Dorvell differ on that opinion? Why on earth doesn't the store owner run a background check? Would he even stay open after it is found the Santa was a child molester? Have they forgotten the age of Joey? Do we feel sorry for Doc despite how much of a dick he has been recently? Why does Doc suddenly not want kids? Is there a potential top 5 moment in this episode? How great is Adam Beach? It's pure coincidence that American Thanksgiving has just passed us by and that our hosts just so happen to be taking on the Disney-fied, romanticized version of the first Thanksgiving with SQUANTO: A WARRIOR'S TALE. Or at least as Disney-fied as a story can be that still opens with a horrifying sequence of two First Nation's men being stolen from their homeland and forced to perform in sideshows for the entertainment of Michael Gambon and the rest of the seventeenth century British elite. There's something engrossing about this movie, whether it be a young Adam Beach's undeniable magnetism and charm, Mandy Patinkin's always soothing presence, or the surprisingly decent investment into production and costume design. But then again, it's Disney doing another story about the horrors of colonialism and the terror it wrought on indigenous populations, so we're not letting it off the hook that easily.

Will it happen again? Will someone portrayed on-screen by Aboriginal actor Adam Beach be quickly dispensed with, leaving us next to no time to really know his character? According to our guest this week, it's been something of a pattern for Mr. Beach—indeed, it's a fate faced by all too many Indigenous actors in Hollywood, as they appear all too briefly in mainstream television and film productions. Cutcha Risling Baldy is an Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University. She's also the author of the 2015 blog post, "I Can't Believe You Keep Killing Off Adam Beach, NBC: Gender, Representation, Settler Colonialism and Native Cameos on Television." In the course of exploring what's at stake in how Indigenous people are represented by the major studios, we'll also discuss whether Beach's latest role as SlipKnot in the summer superhero flick, "Suicide Squad," breaks with the pattern she's described. // Our theme is 'nesting' by birocratic.

The Critical Breakdown: A Film Podcast

This week, we're talking Joe Dirt (2001), starring David Spade, Brittany Daniel, and Christopher Walken. Joe Dirt is the story of a man trying to find his family. At least, we are told this in the film, but the movie operates as more of a series of vignettes. These tie back to Joe's idea of family, but the story hook is barely there. Admittedly, we both didn't hate the film. Hell, Scott likes this film. Joe Dirt also stars Dennis Miller, Adam Beach, Kid Rock, and Jaime Pressly. We examine which jokes work and which fail, and Scott even lists off the exact moments that Max laughed at. We finish the episode with some viewer mail.
