On the latest Music Business Worldwide podcast, MBW founder Tim Ingham is joined by Emmanuel Zunz, founder of ONErpm, one of the recorded music industry's most interesting companies and something of a quiet giant. When it was founded in 2010, ONErpm quickly gained ground in Brazil, where it continues to challenge the major record companies for market share. Since finding success in Brazil, ONErpm has grown all over the planet, offering a range of partnerships to artists, from low-margin DIY distribution to higher-margin full-service deals.Understood to turn over a substantial nine-figure sum each year, ONErpm is profitable because it has to be: One of the most remarkable things about the company, over and above the fact that it runs more than 40 offices globally, is that Zunz continues to fully own the business. He's never taken a cent of private equity or venture capital money, and he's rebuffed a number of acquisition approaches from major music companies and other parties. As he explains on this podcast, Zunz's ambition is simple — to become the fifth largest record company in the world while maintaining a profitable, sustainable business controlled by its founder…Music Business Worldwide's Podcasts are supported by Voly Entertainment (previously known as Voly Music).

CRÉDITOS: Voz narradora: Elena Parra (Trafulla Teatro) Voz Emma: Lola Orti (Trafulla Teatro) MS-Ofelia-s Dream 1- Bensound Montaje y ambientación: Manuel Alcaine

In 1831, at the age of twenty-five, Alexis de Tocqueville made his fateful journey to America, where he observed the thrilling reality of a functioning democracy. From that moment onward, the French aristocrat would dedicate his life as a writer and politician to ending despotism in his country and bringing it into a new age. In this authoritative and groundbreaking biography, leading Tocqueville expert Olivier Zunz tells the story of a radical thinker who, uniquely charged by the events of his time, both in America and France, used the world as a laboratory for his political ideas. Placing Tocqueville's dedication to achieving a new kind of democracy at the center of his life and work, Zunz traces Tocqueville's evolution into a passionate student and practitioner of liberal politics across a trove of correspondence with intellectuals, politicians, constituents, family members, and friends. While taking seriously Tocqueville's attempts to apply the lessons of Democracy in America to French politics, Zunz shows that the United States, and not only France, remained central to Tocqueville's thought and actions throughout his life. In his final years, with France gripped by an authoritarian regime and America divided by slavery, Tocqueville feared that the democratic experiment might be failing. Yet his passion for democracy never weakened. Giving equal attention to the French and American sources of Tocqueville's unique blend of political philosophy and political action, The Man Who Understood Democracy: The Life of Alexis de Tocqueville (Princeton UP, 2022) offers the richest, most nuanced portrait yet of a man who, born between the worlds of aristocracy and democracy, fought tirelessly for the only system that he believed could provide both liberty and equality. Charles Coutinho, PH. D., Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, received his doctorate from New York University. His area of specialization is 19th and 20th-century European, American diplomatic and political history. Dr. Olivier Zunz, the James Madison Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Virginia, joins the podcast to discuss his work on the life of Alexis de Tocqueville. Tocqueville, the French diplomat, came to America in 1830 to study the country's prison system, but truly studied the American political system as a whole. From that experience, he wrote one of the most influential works: "Democracy in America." Zunz is one of the preeminent scholars on Tocqueville and we discuss how Tocqueville influenced France's political systems and how his works continue to impact the perception and understanding of our own country.

In 1835 a young French author on the verge of publishing his first book wrote “the best thing that can happen to me is if no one read my book, and I have not yet lost hope that this happiness will be mine.” But Alexis de Tocqueville's hopes were not fulfilled. Although the first printing was just 500 copies, Tocqueville almost immediately became an intellectual celebrity. When he heard people speaking about his book, said Tocqueville, he wondered “whether they are really talking about me.” Olivier Zunz argues in his new biography The Man Who Understood Democracy: A Life of Alexis de Tocqueville that Tocqueville was a passionate advocate for democracy, judging it the only system that could provide both liberty and equality. He did this both as a scholar and a politician, dying at a moment when it seemed that in both France and America the experiment to which he had devoted his life was on the point of failure. In the first of two conversations, Zunz and I discuss Tocqueville's family; his early life and intellectual development; his unhappy attempt at a legal career; and his famous journey to the young United States. We conclude this conversation with the moment described above, when the publication of the first volume of Democracy in America led to Tocqueville's instant intellectual celebrity. In our second conversation, we will discuss his turn to political action, and its outcomes. Olivier Zunz is the James Madison Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Virginia. He is the author, most recently, of Philanthropy in America: A History (also published by Princeton University Press ). He has edited the Library of America edition of Democracy in America, Tocqueville's Recollections: The French Revolution of 1848 and Its Aftermath, Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont in America: Their Friendship and Their Travels, all in collaboration with the translator Arthur Goldhammer. He has also co-edited The Tocqueville Reader: A Life in Letters and Politics. But a logical look at the assumptions we have, about this chapter, may cause us to rethink what we thought we already knew about  Lazarus' new lease on life.Referenced Resources:Links to Jewish thoughts on lingering souls:https://reformjudaism.org/glimpses-afterlife - Zunz dates it to the middle of the 7th century.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviticus_Rabbah  - The Encyclopaedia Judaica and Jacob Neusner date it to the 5th century. The Zohar, which is one of the texts that make up the Kabbalah, is composed of the teachings of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who was a second-century Talmudic mystic. After being passed along by oral tradition for centuries, the Zohar was finally published in the late 13th century. The belief that the soul lingers for three days after death seems to have emanated from the texts that make up the Kabbalah, notably the Zohar. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shemira)In his book "Jewish Views of the Afterlife," Simcha Paull Raphael says: "Immediately following death, there is a period known as Hibbut Ha Kever, pangs of the grave. During this period, the soul is confused, lingers around the body and tries to go back to his home to be with his loved ones. After this, there is a maximum period of 12 months in Gehenna, which is a realm described as fiery, where the soul is purified of its sins." After the twelve-month period, it is believed the soul rests permanently in the afterlife. (https://classroom.synonym.com/jewish-belief-that-the-spirit-lingers-for-three-days-12087774.html)Regarding Jesus needing to name Lazarus specifically.A quaint Puritan writer said that if Jesus had not named Lazarus when He shouted, He would have emptied the whole cemetery! (Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 337.)Jesus shouted only three words: Lazarus come out! Augustine once remarked that if Jesus had not said Lazarus' name all would have come out from the graves. (Edwin A. Blum, “John,” in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures, ed. J. F. Walvoord and R. B. Zuck, vol. 2 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1985), 315.)MAXIMINUS [The Arian; 360-65...frequently argued w/Augustine]: For all the dead, most beloved, would have arisen out of their graves [on hearing] that one voice if he had not called out that single name. Therefore he spoke in particular, “Lazarus, come forth.” … It is also in this singular name that he called, I say, that we see in a single instance what is to be understood more generally of all in the future. Mixtape 23 sees Mexican artist Lorena Quintanilla crafting a selection of tunes to warm the late November afternoons. Originally for Guadalajara, the artist made a name for herself as one-half Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, a duo responsible for some of the most sonically adventurous psych experimentalism of recent times with a reputation for exceptional live shows and a catalogue of equally impressive albums to match. Now relocated in the less hectic city of Ensenada in Baja California, Quintanilla has reinvented herself into J. Zunz, a new solo project where she explores similar atmospherics but marking a distance with what she had been doing with the obsolete. J.Zunz is also the result of a metamorphic process whereby the minimal is rendered maximal and the personal fused with the political. The initial vision for the J. Zunz project was for Lorena to strip her approach down to the basics. She remembers reading a biography of John Cage, where the author was referring to the influence of Buddhism and meditation, and modern artists like Sonia Delaunay, Lucio Fontana, Julio Le Parc, Duchamp, futurism... that detonated something inside her and sparked a myriad of ideas. Earlier in August J. Zunz published her second album, Hibiscus, one of the most popular flowers in her native Mexico. The album marks a move on sonically from earlier comfort zones in her work, into minimal electronics, hypnotic repetition and compelling trance states, arriving at a soundworld in which cyclical synth patterns, eerie ambient textures and cathartic vocal exhortations. “It is hard to describe any record as they keep unfolding to me in time,” says Lorena. “Now it is almost a year since I recorded it. What I know is that I wrote the album during a personal crisis inside and a political crisis outside. After being profoundly hurt by a person, I trusted but also by the structures outside of me. I wrote it during sleepless nights filled with overwhelming thoughts and feelings.” The collection of tracks in Hibiscus are sinuous, enticing and mysterious; one may feel a bit spooked while wishing this mischievous journey never finishes. For this mixtape, Lorena was inspired by the content of CLOT Mag: I selected some tracks by INTERSPECIFICS, which is an amazing collective that mixes science with music. I chose some tracks that use the translation of different microorganisms and their bioelectrical activity into sound. I also added a track by Alexandra Cárdenas (a master at LiveCoding) and some political electronics from the past. The artists behind the track Ola! have been experimenting with mind and body healing through sound frequencies. I know they have a mattress filled with subwoofers where you can rest while you are feeling the vibrations. Tracklist: 1. INTERSPECIFICS - Infinites 2. Iván Pequeño - ¡Ahora! (Fragmento) 3. Niños De La Tierra - Ola! (Late Edit) 4. Jocy de Oliveira - Wave Song Para Piano e Fita 5. Alexandra Cárdenas - HELLO WORLD 6. INTERSPECIFICS - Slime Mould Music

Episode SummaryJourney back to the Middle Ages for a discussion of The Sword in the Stone (1963), a film beset with sexism and classism befitting its medieval setting. The last fully animated film before Walt Disney’s death in 1966, this story of Arthurian legend leaves a lot to be desired in terms of plot and songwriting as well. Erin and Rachel try to make up for the latter with some singing of their own, and for that, they sincerely apologize. Episode BibliographyGriffin, M., Harding, N., & Learmonth, M. (2017). The book also unearths the historic legal precedents related to how nonprofit organizations are regulated today, the introduction of tax exemption, and prohibitions on lobbying. This was a movement that began in the Northeast, but then spread to the South where the construction of schools for African American children dominated the philanthropic agenda. The book also unearths the historic legal precedents related to how nonprofit organizations are regulated today, the introduction of tax exemption, and prohibitions on lobbying. In sum, Zunz places philanthropy, big and small, into the center of a conversation about the development of American democratic practices. It is a worthy ready for those interested in American politics, the role of the US in world affairs, and the nonprofit sector. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
