This week our hosts, Josh and Jade, dig into Netflix's new adaptation of Richard Osman's bestselling novel The Thursday Murder Club. Directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Home Alone), the film stars Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan, and David Tennant in a murder mystery set in a quiet retirement community that's anything but sleepy. The hosts debate whether the ensemble's chemistry makes the story sparkle, if the plot holds up to the hype, and—most importantly—why Pierce Brosnan was even cast in this movie. Is this Netflix's answer to Knives Out, or just more streaming slop? Tune in to hear your favorite hosts talk trash.
It's bonus time, as we bring you an extra episode of Soundtracking with Chris Columbus, director of the adaptation of Richard Osman's bestseller, The Thursday Murder Club. With a stellar cast including Hellen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley & Celia Imrie, it tells the story of Four retirees who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun, only to find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.
'I got left on the sideline with David Tennant'Dave chats to Dame Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan and Tom Ellis about their new Netflix movie, 'The Thursday Murder Club'.
This week we all watched the Chris Columbis-directed THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB (working title: Olds Detect), a comedy-drama about four friends (Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie), residents of an assisted living facility, who solve cold cases. That is, until a very real and current case lands in their laps when the facility's co-owners end up dead just as they plan to tear up the facility and force the residents out. We had mixed reactions to this one, but at least two Spoilerpiecers liked it more than the third (guess how that shakes out?). Then there's LURKER, writer-director Alex Russell's fresh take on celebrity culture and the depths to we which we mere mortals will sink to find it and stay in it. There's a powerful performance by Théodore Pellerin as an amoral creep clinging to an up and coming pop star played by Archie Madekwe. We had different reactions to this one, too, coming out, again, two to one in favor. And over on Patreon, we watched the 1958 melodrama THE LONG, HOT SUMMER, starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Welles.

This movie looks like an innocent little story about seniors who want to make the most of their golden years, but the craft behind it will knock your socks off. It's a multiple POV, multiple plot film and believe me, this is NOT an easy format to pull off. Welcome to a brand new season! This time around I'm studying the 4 Story Questions and Melanie is focused on tension. This week we're looking at CALENDAR GIRLS. We love these actresses (I mean, honestly, what's not to love?) but the storyline threw us for a loop because when it felt like it was coming to a natural conclusion, we realized there was still another hour to go. I just happened to be presenting on KINDNESS in Memphis when I hear that Celia Imrie was in the same location on her book tour of "Meet Me at Rainbow Corner". She graciously accepted my offer for a quick interview and was simply delightful. Although she politely disputed the name of my company by sensing that "Many People DO!", we had a lovely discussion about KINDNESS, ambition, and "doing". Her best-selling books seem to have a theme of empathy and being nice, which she attributes to her personal philosophy. Celia is best known for her film roles, including the Bridget Jones film series, Nanny McPhee, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and the Netflix series The Diplomat. This interview was live from the Peabody Memphis hotel as we discuss her journey as an Olivier Award winner, a celebrated actress, and an author known for her themes of kindness and empathy. Celia highlights the importance of continuous effort and optimism, sharing her experiences of receiving warmth and hospitality while traveling across America. The conversation also touches on the significance of kindness, how it influences her writing, and the impact of wartime struggles on human relationships. More information on her books here: http://bit.ly/410fB8N More information on IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0408309/ To listen to additional podcasts on people that "do": https://bartaberkey.com/podcast
