Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series!  Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave.  And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way.  During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic.  Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!Once Upon A Time, the edgy director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later decided to make a different type of movie....a FAMILY movie. :) It's a touching story about a recently widowed father (James Nesbitt) who moves his two young sons to the suburbs....when one day, his youngest son Damian (Alex Etel) suddenly discovers in their backyard.....a bag filled with cash!  A LOT of cash no doubt so Damian and his brother (Lewis McGibbon) embark on their own adventure trying to figure out EXACTLY what to do this with this new-found fortune....and what results is a delightful whimsical story involving (among many different things) the transition to the Euro, Mormon neighbors who can transport a LOT of appliances via bicycle, and one of our heroes getting to know all of the most well-known Catholic saints.  It's a true original.   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Jared, Oriana and Ned appear live in Portland at Passages Bookshop to celebrate fifty episodes of By-the-Bywater and to talk about Oriana's choice of topic: Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit. To say that there was almost immediate speculation about whether or when Jackson would also adapt The Hobbit following the smash critical and commercial success of his Lord of the Rings films is to understate; over the following years there were further lawsuits, broken agreements, studio questions, planned directorial choices that mysteriously fell through and more besides that seemed to indicate it would be the biggest case of developmental hell ever. But eventually the films did start coming out in a similar yearly pace starting in December 2012, and certainly earned a fair amount of cash. Yet to say that the films have had anywhere near the level of widespread love and cultural staying power than The Lord of the Rings films is to deny the fundamental truth of how poorly these films have aged on several levels, and the various resultant impacts since, up to and including a literal rewriting of a country's laws to accommodate the production. What were the core differences between the two sets of adaptations on a structural level, and how did that play out in comparative terms? What technical achievements were made much of in the run up to the films' release, and what impact did they actually have? How did what should be a core relationship between the characters of Thorin and Bilbo get set up as a near love story, and how was that all ultimately undercut in the final edits? And really…Alfrid Lickspittle. REALLY?SHOW NOTES.Jared couldn't make a doodle for obvious reasons. But look here! Friend of the show and network Gabriel did sketch us!Big ups to Passages Bookshop! Armagh I Podcast

An average of over seven million viewers are hooked on ITV crime drama The Bay, which first aired in 2019. The show, set in the small seaside town of Morecambe in Lancaster, is on its third season, with a fourth in the works. And the man behind the critically acclaimed and hugely popular whodunnit was born and bred right here in Armagh. Daragh Carville brought the complex characters and stories to life as writer and co-creator of The Bay and while it's probably his best-known work, the screenwriter, playwright and university lecturer has produced plenty of fine work over the years. The recipient of numerous awards from stage to screen, Daragh has more than proven that he is a true talent. His first feature film, Middletown, was nominated in nine categories at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2007, including Best Film and Best Screenplay, with Irish actress Eva Birthistle winning Best Actress. And his second film, Cherrybomb' starring Harry Potter's  Rupert Grint, Love /Hate alumnus Robert Sheehan and our very own James Nesbitt, also picked up awards at the Berlin and Belfast Film Festival. The theatre is where it all started for Daragh, but whatever the platform, his works have translated successfully on radio, and stage as well as on the big and small screen. Daragh is a proud Armagh man, a place that he still calls home despite settling in Lancaster with his novelist wife Jo Baker and their two children. The family come back to Armagh regularly to visit and  it's in Armagh where his career began. He says writing was a vocation for him, with an innate love of film, music, books, comics and art pulling him in that direction. But it was a special and inspirational English teacher in St Pat's Armagh, who encouraged Daragh to pursue his interests. That teacher nurtured his talents, and sent him on the path that led to the career that he loves. And for this week's podcast, Daragh tells us how it all happened and allows us a glimpse into the mind of a successful writer.

We are back with another packed Geektown Radio podcast, and in this latest edition, I'm joined by Matt from Entertainment Talk to chat through our week in tv, film & gaming, along with all the weekly tv news, renewals and cancellations. We begin by reviewing the last 7 days in tv, film and gaming. Matt has joined the huge amount of other Netflix viewers to watch South Korean drama 'Squid Game', so gives us his thoughts on that. He also chats through tackling the wonderfully fun 'Psychonauts 2', and working his way through 'American Horror Stories' on Disney+. Meanwhile, I have been playing through 'Planet Zoo', which released their North America Pack and Update 1.7, so I chat through the abundance of cuteness there. I also discuss the return of our beloved ‘Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist' for the 2nd Season, 'The Problem With Jon Stewart' on Apple TV+, and give an update on 'Foundation', also on Apple TV+. We also discuss the state of the Arrowverse, and 'The Flash' in particular. In the TV news, we run through the renewals, along with some cancellations and pickups, including the arrival of IMDb TV to the UK, and the crashing of various UK channels due to a fire. In the news, we discuss David Tennant returning to ITV in a true-crime drama, a new Channel 4 James Nesbitt series with a ridiculous cast lineup, the CBS 'True Lies' pilot, and 'The Boys' landing a spin-off at Amazon.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Director Danny Boyle (Steve Jobs, Slumdog Millionaire) has said his inspiration for Millions, the only PG rated film in the filmmaker's oeuvre, was to take a complete left turn from his previous film, the violent infection thriller 28 Days Later, and challenge himself to paint with a different tonal brush.  Essentially a fantasy for children with real adult themes at the center, Millions stars the impressive kid actors Alex Etel and Lewis Owen McGibbon as brothers Damien and Anthony and James Nesbitt and Daisy Donovan as the adults in their lives. Besides the heart tugging feature, Dan and Vicky catch us up on their recent viewing.  For Vicky that included a trip to NY's finest museums, the films Ladybird, Landline, The Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, and TV shows The Alienist, Black Lightning, and Mosaic.  Dan has thoughts on Phantom Thread, The Commuter, 1942's Sullivan's Travels, 47 Meters Down, and his favorite recent find,  1971's The Night Visitor. And hear about the strange reason one of Dan's shows was canceled and how Vicky spent her birthday! Our money's on your enjoyment of Hot Date 64: Millions! Steven Moffat to be Doctor Who Lead Writer and Executive Producer Category: Wales; TV Drama; BBC One Date: 20.05.2008 Printable version BBC Wales and BBC Drama has announced that BAFTA and Hugo Award-winning writer Steven Moffat will succeed Russell T Davies as Lead Writer and Executive Producer of the fifth series of Doctor Who, which will broadcast on BBC One in 2010. Moffat has penned some of the series' most unforgettable and acclaimed episodes, including Blink, with its terrifying weeping angels, for which he was awarded the BAFTA Writer Award 2008 on Sunday 11 May. His previous work on Doctor Who includes The Girl In The Fireplace for series two, which earned him his second Hugo Award. His first was for the series one two-parter The Empty Child, which became famous for its terrifying refrain "Are you my mummy?" For the current series, Moffat has written Silence In The Library, a two-parter starring Alex Kingston which transmits on 31 May and 7 June 2008 on BBC One. Steven's career began with the landmark ITV children's drama Press Gang in 1989, for which he won his first Bafta. Coupling, the hugely popular and award-winning sitcom he created and wrote for BBC Two, began in 2000 and ran for four seasons. Jekyll, his six-part thriller starring James Nesbitt and Michelle Ryan, transmitted on BBC One last year. Steven will continue as one of the directors on the board of Hartswood Films which produced Coupling and Jekyll, where he is also working on his new comedy Adam & Eve with wife Sue Vertue. He has just delivered the screenplay for Tintin – the first instalment of the trilogy of films featuring the iconic Belgian comic-strip hero – to Steven Spielberg who will direct it for DreamWorks. Thomas Sangster and Andy Serkis will star. Steven Moffat says: "My entire career has been a Secret Plan to get this job. I applied before but I got knocked back 'cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven. "Anyway, I'm glad the BBC has finally seen the light, and it's a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television. I say toughest 'cos Russell's at my window right now, pointing and laughing." Lead Writer and Executive Producer Russell T Davies says: "It's been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!" Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Scripts and writers are at the heart of what BBC Drama is all about, and especially at the heart of Doctor Who. The past four series have been brilliantly helmed by the spectacularly talented Russell T Davies. "As Lead Writer and Executive Producer, he has overseen the creative direction and detail of the 21st century relaunch of Doctor Who and we are delighted to have his continued presence on the specials over the next 18 months. "But the challenge and excitement of the fifth series is now being handed to Steven Moffat. The Tardis couldn't be in safer hands. Steven's talents on both Doctor Who and beyond are well known. He is a writer of glittering brilliance, comedy and depth, with an extraordinary imagination and a unique voice. "Steven has a wonderful mix of being a committed Doctor Who fan and a true artist, and his plans for the next series are totally thrilling." The announcement follows the news that Piers Wenger will take over the role of Executive Producer from Julie Gardner on series five of Doctor Who. Piers Wenger says: "The challenge of taking Doctor Who to a new future is a huge and thrilling one and BBC Wales is blessed to have someone with Steven's extraordinary talent in charge. "His imagination and creativity have already given birth to some of the series' most unforgettable monsters though in this instance no-one need fear; time, space and the future of The Doctor are safe with him." Wenger and Moffat are already working closely together on the planning of the series. Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "BBC Wales is very proud of Doctor Who's phenomenal success. Steven Moffat is an extraordinary talent and we are very much looking forward to him joining the Doctor Who team." Series four has achieved some of the show's highest audience figures to date and forthcoming episodes feature a stellar line-up of guests including Lesley Sharp, Lindsey Coulson, Alex Kingston, Colin Salmon and Michael Brandon. Freema Agyeman and Billie Piper – The Doctor's two former companions – have also returned to assist The Doctor in series four. Doctor Who will return in 2009 with four specials, and the full-length fifth series is currently scheduled to be broadcast on BBC One in Spring 2010. SH
