Today's episode is an update on Season Four, The Night of the Bonfire, in which I investigated the tragic death of 16 year old Alana Cecil in Melton, Australia in 1996.I want to thank all the local listeners in that case for their support in what was the most difficult case I've worked on to date. If you listened to this season (and I highly recommend you do), you'll be aware of the emotional toll this case took on not only myself but others directly involved. When I released the final episode of this season in September of 2024, I made it clear that this was not the end of the investigation, but just the end of the podcast, for now.Throughout the final months of my investigation I had been working increasingly closely with Victorian Police on new developments in the case, evidence that was not included in the podcast. At this point I felt the appropriate move was to pass this new evidence on to Police so that they may use their vast resources to investigate further. I firmly believed that these leads were the strongest in the case to date and that the truth of what happened to Alana was finally after 28 years, was very close. In November of 2024 I was informed by the Senior Detective I had been liaising with, that a report was being compiled based on the new evidence and was being sent to the Superintendent for review. Then in December the news that Alana's family have been waiting 28 years to hear. After reviewing the evidence Victorian Police made the decision that there will be an official further review of Alana's case in 2025. This review will be undertaken by a newly formed team of four detectives, who will thoroughly canvas the existing case and the fresh evidence in an attempt to finally get to the truth.Since that time I have provided further evidence to Police to assist in their investigation and continue to provide support where required.Naturally Alana's family are ecstatic with this development, and for myself and the Podcast this is a huge win. This is what it's all about, this is why I put in the hours and why you listen and engage, so I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support and to those who subscribe, you're a huge part of making all of this possible. The review of Alana's case is underway now, and hopefully 2025 will be the year we finally get the truth and justice for Alana and her family.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/guilt. On this episode of 3CR's Queering the Air, Madison Moffat chatted with dancer, choreographer and influencer #beatsbyblayk about being queer within the commercial entertainment industry as a trans man and overcoming the stigma and anxiety that can come with it.We also caught up with Tiger Salmon, the co-founder of the (so legendary, bordering on mythical) 1990's queer women's zine 'Wicked Women'. Assistant Commissioner Lauren Callaway hasn't had a conventional career - from aspiring ceramist to journalist, and now a seasoned 30 plus year veteran of the Victorian Police. In this discussion with host Helen McCabe, Lauren talks about having to adapt her approach to leadership in a male-dominated organisation, being judged on what you aren't versus what you are, and the paradox of being both 'likable' and 'tough' in the pressure cooker of the police force. Corruption in the police is a sad reality of the job. But for those investigating these coppers, it's especially hard. Often they're mates - but, they're mates who've committed crimes, so there's no holding back. Chris Coster is Victoria Police's last Chief Inspector. His 45-year career came to an end in 2019, and with it, the rank of Chief Inspector was phased out. During his time at Vic Pol, Chris was the Head of Recruiting - meaning he was the final filter in deciding whether a recruit would be handed a gun and a badge. Then, Chris developed and lead the incredibly successful Neighbourhood Watch Program - and finally, internal investigations; work which saw him investigating his mates, and making some incredibly tough calls. Unpack his career with host Brent Sanders, and understand how Chris overcame immense challenges to be lauded as one of the greats of Victoria Police. David McGowan is a former Victorian Police officer with 21 years experience (1979 – 2000) which included a stint in Carlton CIB as a detective cutting his teeth on house burgs, s3x offences and fraud – one of the most notable cases was the Foodplus b0mbing where a competitor literally tried to blow up the opposition. After the CIB, in 1988 David was invited into the Armed Robbery Squad, working on some really high profile cases like recapturing a prison escapee and convicted bank robber. During these years it also included the tragedy of the Walsh Street police murd3rs and the capture and then subsequent loss of one of the most prolific bank robbers of modern era (19 banks). (He got in trouble for the latter but they did recapture him). Before his police career ended, he was promoted to Richmond station as a Sergeant -and then to Malvern CIB as a Detective Sergeant until leaving the force in 2000 to work for a bank managing the Group Investigations function - responsible for investigating employee corruption across 31 countries –and established investigations teams in NZ, PNG, Fiji, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore. Stating that it had more general crime there than he dealt with in Victoria Police – murd3rs, drug trafficking, slav3ry, gun running, theft, corruption, fraud etc… In 2020 David joined the Police Veterans as CEO and has spent last 12 months developing the organisation looking after all police veterans and recognises the sacrifices and PTSD trauma many members have experienced. It is a not-for-profit and although is Victorian based there is currently an unfulfilled demand for this service nationally.
