Midlife and menopause can be the perfect time to try something new (like as we talk about this week, mountain biking!...but also surfing, skiing, you name it). It frees you from the endless self comparison that can come after years (even decades) in the same sport and infuses you with the confidence that comes with tackling new challenges. And it's never too late and you are never too old. With skills training, you can learn from the ground up at whatever pace is comfortable for you. You also don't have to be a newbie to benefit. Brushing up on the fundamentals of sports like mountain biking can help ease the anxiety that many of us experience as our hormones swing during this time of life. This week's guest, mountain bike coach Karen Brooks knows all about all of it, as she helps women of all ages and abilities (as well as her perimenopausal self) learn, grow, and conquer physical as well as mental obstacles.Karen Brooks has had a varied career in the bike world: mechanic and manager of bike shops, editor of Dirt Rag and Bicycle Times magazines, bike consultant for Carnegie Mellon University, and professional mountain bike skills coach. She has been helping people find confidence and have fun on two wheels for ten years with PMBIA Level 2 and BICP mountain bike certifications, and teaches street biking skills through the League of American Bicyclists. Karen is also on the board of Bike Pittsburgh and advocates for safer walking and biking conditions. Her bike racing history is not all that distinguished, but she did finish the Trans-Sylvania Epic mountain bike stage race on a singlespeed, didn't hate it, and went back to do it again the next year. She currently coaches locally through Full Psych Adventure Team and nationally with Ladies AllRide and other organizations. You can learn more about her and her work at Full Psych Adventure Team. Jeff primarily uses Sage rods, like the Sage R8 and some older Sage X models. 33:25 - Jeff opts for Rio Power Flex leaders when dry fly fishing, appreciating the thicker butt section for improved turnover, especially on windy days. CFTROU 0169: Hospitality: Culture, Systems, & Shepherding As we continue with the greatest hits from our recent Church for the Rest of Us Conference, we discuss how to prioritize a hospitality culture without sacrificing your systems and shepherding practices. Karen Brooks and Josiah Kish walk us through what this looks like in our context. Karen serves as the Director of Church Ministries at Family Church Gardens and Josiah serves as the Connections and Groups Minister at Family Church Downtown. They first walk us through the Biblical foundations of the teams they lead. Then, Karen defines hospitality at Family Church, while Josiah breaks down the tactics that our teams use to make sure the people in our neighborhood churches feel welcomed and at home. Karen and Josiah also talk about how to identify people that are new to our churches, in a way that feels organic and engaging. They walk through setting up the right shepherding processes and how to follow up with each person with next steps that are specific to them. All of these intentional steps strengthens the relationships we build with people that are new to our churches. This episode is filled with actionable insight you can take and use right now with the resources you currently have. Key Points From This Episode:• A look at how a sampling of our neighborhood churches operate within their demographics. • Defining hospitality in this context as removing obstacles for people to hear the gospel. • Tactics we use to help make people feel at home in our churches. • How to separate new members from regular attenders without alienating either group. • The importance of entry points and processes for building a discipleship pipeline. • How to set the right shepherding processes and why a team huddle is an excellent idea. • The inconvenience (and necessity) of making the church feel small. • Using collaboration in leadership meetings and book studies to help people take their next steps in Christ. We want to, across the board, make church feel like home; make it feel small so that you feel like you're part of the family.Click To TweetWe don't have all the magic answers, but we're learning and we have a great culture of collaboration. Jenny: [00:00:01] But now here's Karen. Hello there Karen and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Karen: [00:00:08] Oh hi Jenny. Thank you so much for having me. Dr Karen Brooks, historic fiction author and columnist Jenny: [00:00:12] And I just wanted to start by saying very reverently; Dr. Brooks. Because indeed you have Ph.D in Humanities and you are recognized in your home country of Australia as a weekly columnist and an expert on all sorts of controversial popular topics.. But you've also a wife and mother so you've got a very busy life apart from your writing. You've published twelve books beginning with fantasy and moving into historical fiction. The $64 million question is: Beginning at the beginning was there a Once Upon A Time moment when you thought I've really got to write fiction or I will have just not done when I'm meant to do somehow. Inspired by a friend Karen: [00:01:04] I wish I had a story like that to tell. I love it when authors say that they have always wanted to be a writer and they wrote since they were out of the cot, but no, I never saw myself ever as a writer. I always write. I mean I think lots of kids do and as a teenager I kept diaries. All right, terrible lovelorn poems and messages of adulation to people I admired - political figures or actors and people like that. I think it was my girlfriend becoming quite successful in her field as an author. That was Sara Douglass, the fantasy writer. It was a really aspirational moment for me and she really encouraged me. I'd written a couple of plays and one of them was performed in Sydney a few years earlier. And so again dabbling, dabbling, dabbling. But I kept saying 'I really should write a book one day' or 'I think I'll write a book' and basically I think Sara got absolutely sick of me going on about it and said "Oh for God's sakes just stop saying you're gonna do it and just do it." [00:02:05] She had a few expletives thrown in there, I'm being polite. She was a damn good friend. She really was. So I thought 'yeah you're right.' And I just sat down one day and basically did it. Jenny: [00:02:16] Yes! You make it sound so easy! Karen: [00:02:21] It was torturous! No, no, it actually wasn't. It was a real pleasure but I was in my late 30's from memory. Yeah when I wrote my first book.
