I had Ray Dewey on my podcast today. I had him on a couple of years ago (episode 259) and we went through his life story, from his childhood up until he closed his gallery in Santa Fe, which was one of the best Southwest art galleries of all time.Well, he happened to be in Tucson today so I asked him if he'd do another podcast and he obliged. Ray loves Maynard Dixon just like I do so we always have plenty to talk about. In fact, he had a Maynard Dixon and Ed Mell show in 1985. Really the first Dixon/Mell show that was ever done like that. He was a great friend of Ed's and had represented Ed for years. So in this podcast we talked about the people that have come in and out of Ray's life. There's a variety of interesting people and artists from R.C. Gorman to Allan Houser to Louise Nevelson to Charles Loloma. We also spoke about his relationship with Nat Owings, who was one of these great art dealers of Santa Fe and someone that we hope to have on the podcast sometime soon.I can't not mention Ray's wife, Judy, who worked in the gallery for 20+ years running the backend of the business (just like my lovely wife Kathleen does for Medicine Man Gallery) which is so immensely important. We don't succeed without the Judys and Kathleens in our lives. So, you know, if you really want to know the backstory of the Santa Fe art scene and the players that made it happen, then you have to listen to Ray Dewey on episode 343 of the Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.

The Aldrich Family, a popular radio teenage situation comedy (1939-1953), was also presented in films, television and comic books. In the radio series' well-remembered weekly opening exchange, awkward teen Henry's mother called, "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!", and he responded with a breaking adolescent voice, "Com-ing, Mother!". Henry Aldrich was an endearingly bumbling kid growing awkwardly into adolescence, and The Aldrich Family often revolved around Henry's misadventures with the girls and with his friends.Henry Aldrich was the creation of playwright Clifford Goldsmith. Aldrich began on Broadway as a minor character in Goldsmith's play What a Life. Produced and directed by George Abbott, The actor who brought Henry to life on stage was 20-year-old Ezra Stone, who was billed near the bottom as the 20th actor in the cast. Stone was also employed as the play's production assistant. When Rudy Vallee saw the play, he asked Goldsmith to adapt it into some sketches for his radio program, and this was followed in 1938 by a 39-week run of a sketch comedy series on The Kate Smith Hour with Stone continuing in the role of Henry. Kate Smith's director, Bob Welsh, is credited with the creation of the "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!" opening, which eventually became one of the most famous signature sounds in radio. After finding an audience with Kate Smith's listeners, The Aldrich Family was launched in its own series as a summer replacement program for Jack Benny in 1939 on NBC. The Aldriches survived its replacement status and ran from 1939 to 1944. After a brief hiatus, the show moved to CBS, running on Fridays from 1944 until 1946 with sponsors Grape Nuts and Jell-O before moving back to NBC from 1946 to 1951 on Thursdays and, then, as a sustaining program in its final run of September 21, 1952 to April 19, 1953 on Sundays.
SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. Welcome to Episode 8 with Eating Psychology Coach Kathleen Donhardt. Kathleens work AND personal experience is around weight issues connected with the trauma of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and suicide. Her mission is to hold space for women to discuss the "elephant in the room" to help them break free of shame and guilt that is not theirs to carry. Her business, The Light Elephant Coach, is a platform for speaking publicly about sexual abouse, and not only that - how we can heal, love who we are and find gratitude for what these experiences can teach those who have had them. She's passionate about going to the topics society says we can't talk about. Kathleen spent years in a life of self-loathing, sabotage, yo yo dieting, continual weight gain, and abusive relationships. As a single mother feeling abandoned by the world, she had a choice. She could remain seeing herself as a victim to life or find a way to heal and create a life she actually wanted to live. That latter choice lead her to where she is today. Today we talk about: The trauma she suffered at the hands of a close family member as a child and the way her body reacted to that trauma. How she used exercise to punish herself. How she came to understand that her body was holding weight as protection. The life changing moment when she realized her body wasn't against her but was actually on her side. How she simultaneously gave herself permission to see that it WASN'T HER FAULT AND...took complete responsibility for her life. How quitting diets AND exercise saved her life. HOW she learned to actually listen to her body. And how self-love truly is a practice.
