Our guest on this week's episode is Kathy Fulton, the executive director of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN). We have all seen the unprecedented damage caused by the wildfires near Los Angeles. It is at times like this that the supply chain industry can mobilize resources to make sure supplies get to those who need help. Kathy Fulton shares what the emergency needs are, what is being done, and what more can be done. She also gives her take on the role of FEMA in disaster response. We saw some encouraging signs this week of manufacturing projects here in the U.S. Of course, manufacturing brings the promise of new jobs, and also of material handling, warehousing, trucking, and all the logistics that's needed to make a factory work. We discuss two new projects - the construction of a $1.2 billion plant in Oklahoma for producing materials for batteries and GE Vernova plans to invest $600 million in its U.S. factories over the next two years to support its energy businesses. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, or NMFTA, published proposed changes to its National Motor Freight Classification system this week. The NMFC is a freight classification tool that businesses throughout the less-than-truckload industry use to classify and establish prices for moving freight. When they take effect later this year, shippers may see changes in the LTL prices they pay to move freight.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Our guest on this week's episode is Kathy Fulton, executive director at the American Logistics Aid Network, or better known in the logistics industry as ALAN. All of us have witnessed the devastation that Hurricane Helene brought to the Southeast and the Carolinas in particular. And then right on the heels of that we had Hurricane Milton tearing across Florida earlier this week. It is during disasters like these that we see the best that the logistics industry has to offer, and of course that is the work of ALAN. Kathy shares what her team is doing to match logistics services with those who need help in those recovering areas.Florida and the Southeast region have been hit hard by storms and disruptions this Fall. Hurricane Milton moved across central Florida just this week. So the damage reports are obviously not in yet. But we have learned a lot about the longterm effects of recent events and disruptions on supply chains, including Hurricane Helene, the East and Gulf Coast dockworkers strike, and Hurricane Milton. We discuss a new technology that may impact warehouse inventory operations.Inventory drone provider Corvus Robotics made news this week with a product update and the announcement of a new $18 million funding round. The update includes new cameras that allow the drones to work in a lights-out environment—essentially, they deliver a fully autonomous experience.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Our guest on this week's episode is Kathy Fulton, executive director of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN). This week Hurricane Debby made landfall on the East Coast, bringing with it lots of rain, flooding, and damage to Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. It is now making its way up the coast. What are the effects on supply chains and how is the industry responding to help those in need? It is always good for us to track the health of the supply chain industry. This week the latest data show that economic activity in the logistics industry expanded in July, marking the eighth straight month of moderate growth across warehousing and transportation markets; that's according to the latest monthly Logistics Managers Index (LMI) report, which was released this week. The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) is calling on the Biden administration to engage the International Longshoreman's Association (ILA) which represents dock workers, and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents port operators to come to a new labor agreement to avoid a possible strike at East Coast and Gulf Coasts ports. The two sides are far apart on a new agreement as the current pact is set to expire on September 30. A strike could have widespread impacts on the flow of goods during peak season.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Host Shari Altergott, Chief Experience Officer of The CX Edge talks with Kathy Fulton, Executive Director and Emilee Martichenko, Development Coordinator of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) about how your company can give back to help disaster survivors and economically challenged communities through material handling equipment contributions, monetary donations, and your logistics expertise. MHEDA members have been a strong partner to ALAN in past years, and we thank all of you that have helped. About American Logistics Aid Network ALAN is an industry-wide organization that saves lives and reduces suffering for disaster survivors by providing supply chain assistance to humanitarian organizations whenever disasters hit, all with the help of numerous members of the logistics community who have agreed to make essential donations of transportation, warehousing, material equipment or expertise. Studies show that up to 80 percent of their crisis spending goes to logistics. And of that, as much as 40 percent may be wasted simply because these organizations don't have the right supply chain equipment, knowledge or services at their disposal. ALAN helps disaster relief organizations and other non-profits make every logistics dollar count. Over the years, ALAN has played a role in helping more than 100 humanitarian organizations provide disaster relief for more than 60 disasters, including the 2010 Haiti earthquake; Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria; the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Our guest on this week's episode is Kathy Fulton, executive director of ALAN, the American Logistics Aid Network. Just within the past two weeks, our nation has been rocked by two weather-related catastrophes: the wildfire tragedy in Maui and also Tropical Storm Hilary, which has brought unprecedented rain and flooding to western states. We talk about these disasters and how our logistics industry is responding to provide connections between transportation providers and the agencies on the ground coordinating relief efforts. Some of the same drought conditions that contributed to the tragic fires in Maui are also causing problems for the movement of goods through the Panama Canal. This week more restrictions were imposed on the number and weight of ships that can traverse the canal. We discuss the latest news from the canal. New technologies are emerging all the time for warehouses and transportation operations. One new intriguing tech is wireless charging for autonomous mobile robot systems and automated guided vehicles. We share what is spurring on the adoption of this technology. CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. "Hope is not a strategy." In this episode, we are joined by Kathy Fulton, Executive Director of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN), who discusses her work connecting private-sector resources with disaster response needs: a "gray sky" response, after a disaster hits. For instance, if a supplier has excess food they need to offload, ALAN will connect them with a warehouse with the capacity to accept the delivery. ALAN forges partnerships between various players in the supply chain as well as between the public and private sectors, which, along with information sharing among all parties, are critical to fostering collaboration in order to respond effectively to a disaster and to strengthen future disaster preparedness.

It should come as news to no one that the pandemic broke global supply chains, and they remain in need of repair. Container ships are backed up waiting to unload. Shortages are causing massive delays. Capacity is limited, companies cannot find labor, nor can they find the drivers to transport the goods they do have. Add to that the threats of severe weather, cyber security concerns, a failing infrastructure, and lingering impacts of a worldwide pandemic. It is certainly an interesting time to be a supply chain professional. But with each of these threats comes opportunities. We'll explore it all with industry insiders and thought leaders on "The Top 10 Supply Chain Threats” a new, 11-episode, podcast series from CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly.Episode 9: Threat: Weather extremesWeather is always a risk to the resiliency of a supply chain, and shifts in climate patterns seem to be making it an even more important risk for which supply chain executives need to be prepared. WISC Series Sponsored by HULFT Welcome back Lets Talk listeners! Providing Disaster Relief Assistance Through Logistics In this episode we talk to Kathy, executive director of the American Logistics Aid Network, an organization that provides supply chain assistance to disaster relief organizations and other non-profits. Kathy has worked in the supply chain and IT industry for 20 years and joined ALAN in 2010 when she took an interest in supply chain and emergency management, and started working on efficient coordination of logistics activities during disasters. The logistics industry is instrumental to disaster relief - over 60% of spending goes into logistics. Making sure people have shelter, food and water is much more complicated than it seems. Logistics experts can provide their expertise and knowledge in order to do good, and this in turn can save a huge amount of money; Kathy uses an example where an NGO saved over a quarter of a million dollars just from 15 hours of work from a logistics expert. The most inspiring part of Kathy’s journey has been the opportunity to see the good that companies do during disaster. Disasters are happening all the time, and although this is painful to experience, peoples’ desire to do good and be a part of something positive stands out. Anyone who works in the supply chain and logistics industry has a huge opportunity to save lives and make an impact, just by offering expertise. Kathy hopes to keep serving ALAN and provide better tools for businesses and NGOs to collaborate during disasters. In this episode we discuss: Kathy’s journey to success The American Logistics Aid Network Why the logistics industry is so instrumental to disaster relief Advice as a woman working in the supply chain industry How to get involved with disaster relief The most important piece of advice for the next generation What is next for Kathy and ALAN Aid Resources and links mentioned: American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN Aid)

Born in the wake of one devastating hurricane, the American Logistics Aid Network found itself in the eye of another. ALAN was formed in response to a series of unusually intense storms in 2005, most notably Hurricane Katrina. Today, the organization draws on an extensive roster of private companies, trade associations, government agencies and relief organizations to respond to any manner of disaster, enabling the rapid delivery of food, clothing, shelter and other critical supplies to those in need. Kathy Fulton, interim president and director of operations with ALAN, and Richard Sharpe, chief executive officer of Competitive Insights LLC, join us to discuss how ALAN and its partners responded to Hurricane Sandy, which slammed the Caribbean and Atlantic seaboard in 2012. They talk about the lessons they learned, and how they plan on dealing with the next big disaster.
