You might be surprised by how much you can get for it: https://flippa.com/exit -- In this episode of The Exit, host Steve McGarry sits down with sales growth expert Mike Huey, President of Scalable Sales Solutions, to unpack one of the biggest hidden risks that can derail a business sale: founder-led sales. After spending 30 years in sales, scaling companies, and helping owners prepare for successful exits, Mike explains why buyers hesitate when revenue depends entirely on the owner and what founders can do to build a sales organization that actually transfers. Mike shares tactical advice on when business owners should finally take off the “sales hat,” how to build a repeatable sales system, and the common mistakes entrepreneurs make when scaling their teams. From compensation plans and accountability metrics to CRM systems, AI automation, and relationship handoffs, this episode is packed with practical strategies for founders looking to increase enterprise value and make their business more attractive to buyers. Whether you are preparing for an exit or trying to scale smarter, this conversation offers a roadmap to building a company that can thrive without you. -- Mike Huey is the President of Scalable Sales Solutions and a sales growth strategist with more than 30 years of experience in sales, sales leadership, and business scaling. Send us a textIn the early years of running a business, most financial mistakes aren't dramatic; they're subtle, common, and quietly destructive. And by the time many entrepreneurs realise something is wrong, the damage is already done.In this episode, Stuart and Mena break down the most common financial mistakes entrepreneurs make in their first three years and, more importantly, how a CFO would approach them differently. We cover why mixing personal and business money creates blind spots, why profit does not equal cash, and how underpricing can quietly turn a business into an exhausting hobby. We also unpack the risks of unplanned debt, ignoring tax obligations, and trying to do everything yourself instead of building systems early. You'll learn how CFO-style business owners think about cash flow forecasting, pricing, debt, delegation, and financial targets, and why understanding your numbers is not optional if you want sustainable growth. We also explore when and why business structure matters, and how early decisions can either limit or accelerate long-term wealth creation. If you're in your first few years of business or planning to start, this episode will help you avoid the mistakes that derail otherwise great ideas, and replace guesswork with clarity, discipline, and control. If this episode resonated with you, please leave a rating on your favourite podcast platform. Building a Strong Business Foundation with Lyndsay StaffordIn this episode, host Josh Elledge interviews Lyndsay Stafford—founder and CEO of Stafford Solutions—to explore the essential building blocks entrepreneurs often overlook. Lyndsay shares insights from her corporate retail background and her work helping small business owners create clarity, strengthen their branding, and build systems that support long-term growth. Her perspective offers grounded guidance for business owners who feel overwhelmed and want a clearer path to scaling sustainably and confidently. How Strong Foundations Drive Sustainable Business GrowthLyndsay explains that many entrepreneurs struggle because they attempt to grow without establishing core foundational elements such as documented processes, consistent brand messaging, and organized operations. Without these essentials, even the best marketing efforts fall flat because the business lacks the structure needed to support visibility, lead flow, and client experience. She encourages business owners to start by performing internal audits of their branding and systems, ensuring every touchpoint—from online presence to client onboarding—reflects a cohesive, professional identity before investing more heavily in marketing. She also discusses the importance of maintaining a strong and intentional online presence, emphasizing that outdated websites, inactive profiles, and misaligned advertising can erode trust. Lyndsay stresses the value of strategic content creation, setting healthy boundaries with social media use, and delegating platform management to experts when possible. By prioritizing creation over consumption and developing a sustainable posting strategy, business owners can strengthen authority and become the obvious choice in their market. Finally, Lyndsay highlights the growing role of fractional services in supporting small business growth, especially for companies not yet ready to hire full-time specialists. Fractional support provides access to branding experts, operations strategists, and marketing professionals without the financial burden of full-time salaries. This approach allows entrepreneurs to accelerate growth, streamline execution, and focus on the activities that generate the highest return—making it one of the most powerful resources for businesses under $1M in revenue.About Lyndsay StaffordLyndsay Stafford is the founder and CEO of Stafford Solutions, where she helps entrepreneurs develop branding, marketing strategies, and operational systems that fuel sustainable business growth. With a background in corporate retail and a passion for empowering small business owners, Lyndsay provides strategic consulting, fractional support, and hands-on implementation to help companies scale with confidence. They talk about crucial issues such as maintaining up-to-date business data, the indispensable role of Google My Business for solopreneurs, and the shifting balance between human-led content creation and AI tools. Paige shares valuable insights on effective platform strategies, the importance of thought leadership, and the tangible benefits of SEO, ensuring that every small business owner feels empowered to invest wisely in their digital footprint.  This is a conversation you cannot afford to miss if you aim to turn every digital marketing effort into substantial business growth.   [00:05 - 9:03] The Power and Pitfalls of Digital Asset Management Challenges in tracking key business data and the significant financial and decision-making impact of outdated information. Maintaining an up-to-date Google My Business page for solopreneurs, boosting both visibility and credibility. Being visible on multiple platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook to build trust and engagement. Predictions are leaning towards increased reliance on AI for business tasks but be aware of losing the value of expert digital marketing assistance.     [9:04 - 16:52] Maximizing ROI in Digital Marketing and Thought Leadership Digital marketing is a significant investment and the concept of "return on effort" for small businesses is discussed. Focus your marketing efforts on platforms where your ideal clients are, rather than spreading yourself too thin, citing a lesser-known audio platform's lack of traction. The prudent use of AI is advised to simplify tasks and enhance decision-making, with an emphasis on intentionality and impactful activities. Avoid getting overwhelmed with multiple tasks and instead concentrate efforts in a few critical areas and excelling in them.     [16:53 - 25:02] SEO and Digital Marketing in the AI Era Essential SEO steps include setting up a robots.txt file, submitting a sitemap to Google, and claiming Google My Business to improve visibility. The need for alignment between SEO efforts and content marketing is underscored, indicating that blogging without SEO optimization is ineffective. Adapt strategies to align with trends showing that users are not relying solely on Google for information. The impact of AI on search results and the importance of maintaining SEO best practices for visibility within AI-curated content results.   [25:03 - 34:36] The Human Touch in AI-Driven Marketing The necessity of emotional connections and thought leadership is where AI falls short. In today's episode, I'm breaking down 3 big mistakes entrepreneurs make when scaling their online business. My goal is to provide actionable insights for entrepreneurs aiming to elevate their online ventures.3 Big Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make When Scaling Their Online Business - Key Takeaways:Mistake #1: Guessing Instead of StrategizingEntrepreneurs often overlook the necessity of a clear business strategy and revenue plan, inadvertently hindering their scaling efforts. Prioritizing sales development over audience building is paramount for sustained growth.Mistake #2: Relying on Hope and Prayer Instead of SystemsThe reliance on singular lead sources exposes entrepreneurs to unnecessary risks. Establishing your audience and implementing strategic systems, such as the VEMS model for content creation, are pivotal steps toward success.Mistake #3: Attempting to Fix Sales Problems with MarketingDistinguishing between sales and marketing is essential. Sales serve as the bedrock of any business, necessitating an understanding of customer needs through dedicated sales calls.Client Story:We explore a real-life example illustrating the pitfalls of external referral dependence and the transformative journey toward building an independent audience, culminating in a lucrative six-figure launch.Prospect Story:We delve into a prospect's reluctance to prioritize sales over marketing, uncovering the repercussions of this oversight and the caution against banking on virality as a sustainable business strategy.Key Quotes:It's time to get serious about systems—they are the only path to freedom in your online business. The role of marketing is to amplify what you know about what is effectively working in your sales process. Plan your social media content out in advance. It's a requirement. Your social media does not benefit from lackadaisical planning. You'll get exactly what you're putting into it.Marketing and sales are two completely different skill sets. Don't try to fix a sales problem with a marketing strategy.Unlike marketing, sales is hand-to-hand combat. Engage in one-on-one conversations, understand what resonates with your prospects and customers, and incorporate those insights into your marketing strategy. Stop guessing; the competition is too fierce to build a million-dollar business without a solid strategy. Need to make more money? Focus on sales, not marketing.Resources Mentioned:The Unlaunch Method Workshop: https://www.theunlaunchmethod.com Conclusion:In conclusion, we've dissected the 3 significant mistakes hindering entrepreneurs in scaling their business online. One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is picking the wrong business. It's crucial to find something you truly love and enjoy the process of doing. Don't just chase opportunities, find a need and solve it with passion. In this episode of the Perfectly Mentored Podcast, Jason discusses the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make and how to fix them. He starts by emphasizing the importance of choosing the right business and not just chasing opportunities. Entrepreneurs should find a need and genuinely enjoy solving it. Jason warns against starting a business simply because it's on a "top businesses to start" list, using the example of podcasting. While it may be a popular strategy, it won't work unless the entrepreneur truly enjoys having conversations and engaging with people. He emphasizes that successful entrepreneurs love the process and the work itself, not just the results. Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of only focusing on the opportunity and the money, rather than the work itself. Jason concludes by highlighting the importance of making money in business, even for charities, as it allows them to make a greater impact.Topics Covered:Picking the wrong business. Entrepreneurs and designers are caught in an analysis-paralysis trap when starting or growing their businesses. Unsurprisingly, founders want the perfect product or service and brand, but it's important to remember that perfection is optional for startup success. Rather than striving for perfection, entrepreneurs should focus on creating a Minimum Viable Brand (MVB) and building on it as they progress. MVBs require far less effort than a fully realized version, so entrepreneurs can confidently launch without the extra pressure to be perfect right out of the gate. It also ensures that evolution is part of the plan, giving plenty of room to incorporate intricate changes. As daunting as launching a new product or service can seem, developing an MVB can ease some of that stress while ensuring your idea is headed in the right direction! I discuss: Examples of successful entrepreneurs and designers who have evolved their offerings over time, such as Amy Landino, Chris Ducker, and Lee Jackson. Twitter and Pinterest are two examples of companies that initially had different focuses but shifted their offering over time to great success.  Thanks for listening!
