Sports are a business. This is an adage we hear over and over during the course of a season and the Kelechi Osemele debacle with the NY Jets is a great example of this. Osemele tore his labrum and sought out advice on whether he should play through it or get surgery. The team doctors told him one this and his private council told him another. He got surgery and the team cut him. Did they have the right to? Can he collect on the remainder of his TEN MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT? Youre listening to the Scholars of the Game podcast.Ā

The new league year is set to begin this week. The period of "legal tampering" begins today when teams and players are allowed to start discussing contracts. With the cap space the Jets will have, you can expect plenty of activity. But in many ways the new year began for the Jets over the weekend when news broke that the Jets acquired former Pro Bowl guard Kelechi Osemele. The Jets sent a fifth round pick to the Raiders and received a sixth round pick back to facilitate the deal. The team has a clear need to upgrade its offensive line, and this was the first step. Breaking down the trade is the main topic on today's podcast episode. In other news of less importance, the Jets re-signed backup center Jonnothan Harrison over the weekend and had a free agent visit with cornerback Kevin Johnson. We will also discuss these topics. The first wave of free agency has come and gone. The Minnesota Vikings didn't land the White Whales the fanbase wanted (Kelechi Osemele or George Iloka), but I think we're fine settling for the White Rhino in Alex Boone. We dive into him as well as the other depth free agent signing the Purple made. I also take a look at other potential Vikings still on the market and what the plan should be with our own unrestricted free agents.
