Step into the world of groundbreaking women entrepreneurs who are shaping the landscape of the fast-growing cannabis industry. To kick off our new series, we're sitting down with Kristi Palmer, president and co-founder of one of our favorite cannabis edible brands, Kiva Confections. Kristi sheds light on the personal and professional challenges she faces in the ever-changing weed industry and offers valuable insights into how she and her husband Scott built the brand from the ground up. Discover how her commitment to quality and consumer trust has propelled Kiva into a leading name in cannabis edibles. "I'm a lightweight consumer, and if I consume too much, I'm mad. I can't sleep. I'm like, who do I need to write a strongly worded letter to because it's not cool, right? Being a sensitive consumer, that's where I get mad. I don't get mad very often, but if I over consume because of somebody else's doing... it's not good." If you enjoyed this episode, we'd recommend episode 183, Women, Money, Power and Cannabis. Just a decade into legalization, the science behind cannabis-infused edibles has already come a long way. We've now got fast-acting edibles, cutting effect times from hours to minutes, made possible by nano-emulsification technology. We've got heightened experiences and flavors, thanks to Live resin and rosin-infused foods, which contain extracts from flash-frozen freshly-cut cannabis flower. And we now have targeted effects edibles, which specifically help us chill, focus, find energy, or sleep. So how do edibles work, and how are they getting faster? How do food scientists maintain taste and texture while adding milligrams of THC? And how are companies using new technologies to give us a range of edible experiences like deeper highs and desirable cannabis flavors? In this episode, host Brit Smith talks to Kristi Palmer, co-founder of Kiva Confections, about how companies like hers innovate the edibles in our market. Kristi discusses the kinds of new experiences edible consumers are looking for, the hurdles edible companies typically face in the kitchen when innovating their product lines, and how Kiva's team works across state lines to meet those consumer desires.Brit also talks to Breanna Neff, Chief Food Scientist and founder of Brelixi, about how food scientists like her get cannabis edibles to give us those different kinds of highs and faster onsets, all while maintaining the taste and texture. Breanna explains how edibles work in our bodies, the science behind nano-emulsification for fast-onset edibles like her Brelixi drink powder mix, and how targeted effects edibles work to give us certain experiences.Read more on the science of infused food in the fall 2023 Edibles issue of Different Leaf magazine, available at DifferentLeaf.com, or find your local retailer at DifferentLeaf.com/on-the-newsstandFollow us on social media @DifferentLeaf and find host Brit Smith @BritTheBritishGet your Different Leaf merch now at xDifferentLeaf.com

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thank you for tuning in to my solo episode this week.  This week, I'm digging through the archives all the way back to the early days of Female Startup Club to unearth the lessons shared by female pioneers in the controversial, exciting and ever-evolving CBD industry. Since cannabis is progessively legalising across countries and it's demand has increased multifold, we've seen an influx of innovative women-led companies in the space.  Although, we must note, not a particularly representative one. In 2022, the percentage of women holding these top position has dropped to 22%, down from 37% women in executive-level roles in 2017. Despite this decline of women-power in the space, I've had to chance to speak to a number of real hustlers in the space making a profound undeniable impact on the future of CBD, and I'm excited to share their biggest learnings with you here today. Let's get straight into it.  The first interview takes us back to the chat that I had last year with Valtina Milanova, the founder of Daye. Valentina is the creator of the first ever cannabis infused tampon, created to help with period cramps. Secondly we chat to Yugenials founder Nia Davies, as we dive into why it's about time for consumer education and regulation to evolve more seriously in this space. We look back on the time the founders of Equilibria, Coco Meers and Marcy Capron-Vermillon showed us how to look at influencers as a relationship development partnership.  Ok, that's all for today! What I love about the female-founded cannabis space, is that the founders work together like a team. It's a tight-knit community of strong women working together opposed to against eachother in their plight to educate the world on the positive effects of CBD and join forces in battling through those regulations. When you're starting up a business in CBD as a woman not fighting against competition, you're joining a team. We can all take a leaf out of that book. We also jump back to the basics on finding that gap in the market and how Sagely Naturals founder Kerrigan Behrens started where I'm a big believer every brand should, looking at consumer insights. Next we reflect on our chat with Kiva Confections founder Kristi Palmer about the importance of packaging in gained consumer trust, before diving into the specifics of how the money piece comes together in building a brand in a high risk category such as this one from our conversation with Prima co-founder Lauren Angelica Myers. Before rounding off the episode with the story of the industries very own Kush Queen, Olivia Alexander, who has shown us like no other how a bad situation can turn out to be a stepping stone for greatness.  Let's get straight to it! In the middle of the night on December 9, 1976, a pair of Vietnam vets turned international weed smugglers stood on a makeshift runway in Baja, Mexico, watching as a work crew loaded up their twin-engine airplane with 6,000 pounds of primo sinsemilla bud.  The unregistered flight’s illicit cargo was a locally-grown high-grade red-hair strain known as Mota Magic. Unfortunately, the ill-fated smuggling run ended in disaster when the planeload of weed crashed into a remote frozen lake tucked away in Yosemite's rugged backcountry.  But from that tragedy arose the greatest "gold rush" in weed history, as some of the world's top rock climbers, the DEA, the forest rangers, and itinerant hippies all raced to pull as many bales of Mota Magic from the frozen lake as possible. This episode was recorded live in Humboldt County, California as part of the Savage Henry Comedy Festival. In 1970, the author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ran for Sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado as the anointed candidate of the newly formed Freak Power political party.  He promised an immediate end to marijuana arrests and abusive policing. He also promised to rip up the streets of Aspen and sod them. And that his first act as sheriff would be to “install on the courthouse lawn a platform and a set of stocks in order to punish dishonest dope dealers in a proper public fashion.” Thompson even shaved his head bald, so he could refer to incumbent Sheriff Carroll D. Reefer, muggles, gage — whatever jazz-age slang you prefer, marijuana most definitely played an outsized role in the development of this most unique and influential American art form. From the formation of the first ever jam sessions to the racial integration of the leading jazz bands, cannabis culture and consciousness of the era pushed musicians and audiences alike towards a higher appreciation of authentic, improvised, expansive self expression. As jazz evolved into the world’s most popular musical genre, weed-friendly musicians began to tour, leaving a trail of newly initiated reefer smokers (and freshly planted reefer seeds) in their wakes. A wide range of jazz greats also made approving references to “Mary Warner” in songs like Reefer Man (Cab Calloway), If You’re a Viper (Fats Waller), Texas Tea Party (Benny Goodman), Muggles (Louis Armstrong), Gimme a Reefer (Bessie Smith), When I Get Low, I Get High (Ella Fitzgerald), and I'm Feeling High and Happy (Gene Krupa). We explore this incredible underground history via the unique friendship of two of the scene’s most legendary Vipers (or weed enthusiasts) — Louis Armstrong, the most famous jazz musician of all time, who inhaled two cigar-sized joints on the daily, and clarinetist Milton “Mezz” Mezzrow, a middle class Jew from Chicago who became very, very well loved in jazz circles for having a steady supply of the finest herb available. Even in states that have legalized marijuana, opening a business that sells it can be hard. Some of it, according to Kristi Knoblich Palmer, the co-founder of Kiva Confections, which makes edible THC products, is just down to people not wanting cannabis retail in their backyards. For a time, even Instagram was skeptical of letting Kiva's products -- mints, gummies, and chocolates -- show up on their platform. "Our account kept getting shut down," said Knoblich Palmer, even though they were "keeping it informative, all about education -- and then you'd look at other pages that weren't getting shut down and weren't getting flagged, and they were racy and inappropriate." Still, her company's answer was to keep graduating marijuana's image. "We really have to act professionally and go above and beyond to make ourselves look professional, to act professionally, and to help overturn that stigma," said Knoblich Palmer, who launched Kiva in 2010. That starts with the packaging, where 95% of Kiva's brand image happens. "Having a beautiful package was the front door for the consumer," said Knoblich Palmer. "It had to step up the edibles category as a whole and really let edibles finally sit in a different part of the mind for consumers." Beyond that, down-to-the-milligram precision in THC dosage ("everybody had those college experiences" of having a bit too much) goes a long way in building trust with consumers. On this week’s episode of Making Marketing, Knoblich Palmer talked about the responsibility she feels when marketing a product that some people still oppose, how the company started in her kitchen, and what her vision for the company in five years is.

Alice B. Toklas was born in 1877 in San Francisco, but she relocated to Paris after the earthquake of 1906 destroyed 80% of her hometown. And on the very day she arrived in the City of Lights, Alice met and fell in love with Gertrude Stein—also an American expatriate, and a collector of important work by not yet renown masters like Cezanne, Gaugiun, Renoir, Matisse and Picasso. These very painters would bring friends and rivals to the apartment shared by Gertrude and Alice at all hours to show off their latest masterpieces, and so, one of the art world’s most celebrated salons was born, which would draw in the leading lights of Paris in the 1920s, including Ernest Hemingway, F.
